There's something strange going on in Briar Creek. Everyone's been quiet lately...too quiet. Lexi's fate was determined before she even arrived in Briar Creek at the beginning of the summer, and it was far more deadly than she ever could have imagined.
I had a lovely read after 50% of this book. That's where someone explains to Lexi the danger that awaits her, and the event afterwards is much more exciting. The plot twist right at the end of the story made me want to pick up the next book immediately to find out more.
However, I still dislike the heroine in the story. I wish she was a little bit more mature and crafty in her solution thinking. I also hope Gabe will finally open up to her about everything, no more doubt, etc!
I also wonder if we ever meet Anna Schwartz again, whom Lexi met briefly during her runaway attempt. I'm sure she's important in the story, somehow. Maybe it's also time to meet Lexi's father! 🤞
Read as box set 1 - 4 I liked these books the sucked you in I enjoyed the twist and turns. they weren't what I expected out of a vampire series, but they are worth a read if you want something different.
What I liked: -The beginning. Lexi waking up in the hospital was enough to draw me into the second book in this series. The opening chapter created a sense of mistrust and secrecy that was present throughout the rest of the book. Lexi learned early on that she couldn’t trust anyone other than herself, and I felt like she might have matured a little because of Gabe’s betrayal. -The ending. To me, the final chapter was the best part of the book. It was the only part where something actually seemed to happen. I could feel the danger Lexi was in and I could feel her growing mistrust of those around her. And that final page was interesting and unexpected enough to lead me into the next book. Honestly, I never saw that coming, but it was a great twist. -Lexi. She kind of grew on me in this book. Probably because she wasn’t lusting after four boys at once and she was no longer slut-shaming Mary-Kate. That greatly improved my liking of her. She was a little smarter than in the first book, and she was more open-minded about her situation and she was able to consider things she wouldn’t have before.
What I disliked: -Plot. Once again, I felt like the plot didn’t really progress anywhere. It all seemed to revolve around Lexi whining about her aunt’s unfair rules, thinking about Gabe, lusting after other guys she knew, and not really doing anything. Her life was supposedly in constant danger, but her attitude didn’t really reflect that. She should have constantly been worrying about being killed, but the only times she really seemed to think about it was when someone tried to hurt her, but she quickly forgot about it. -Writing style. It seemed a little stiff and robotic to me. There was hardly any emotion in the words I was reading. Instead of showing that Lexi was scared, or excited, or happy, or sad, we were told she was feeling those things. This book had a bad case of “telling” and needed more “showing”. And there seemed to be a few instances were words were repeated improperly, but as far as self-publishing goes, the editing in this was probably better than a lot I’ve read.
Overall, this was a pretty average book. It wasn’t anything special, but I think it was worth the dollar I paid for it. It’s a standard vampire romance novel that features a non-special heroine, a dark and broody hero, and a case of insta-love. But it was intriguing enough for me to purchase the next book in the series, so I guess I would recommend this to hardcore vampire fans. 3.0
I was so glad to be able to read Thicker than Water right after finishing Kiss of Death. I actually liked this book better than the first. This one was 602 pages and felt less hurried than the first one. If you haven't read the first book, stop reading right now and go read it as I am going to try not to spoil but because the story picks up after quite a cliffhanger in the first book, it will have to be given away a little bit.
At the beginning, Lexi is having a dreamlike experience where she sees her Mom and Austin. Both have been issuing clues and warnings. Lexi wakes in the hospital and pretends she has amnesia about the events leading up to the accident. She hides her true feelings about Dan but also tries to avoid dating him anymore. Her Aunt and Uncle seem to treat Lexi better immediately after the accident. However, her aunt insists that Lexi goes right back to work which seems strange but then Violet is a total wack-job. Gabe is missing from the accident scene and although Lexi is glad he's alive she can't help but feel he tried to kill her. She begins getting helpful hints from an anonymous friend. Lexi knows about Gabe being a vampire and suspects others but this book begins to unravel the secrets of Briar Creek.
Dan is still around and Lexi tries to avoid him. Aunt Violet insists that Dan drive Lexi to and from school. Everyone at school wants to be her friend and talk about the accident. All the guys she meets seem fascinated with her and ask her out. Lexi is wary of everyone and her instinct tells her that they are lying. She is alone and has no one she can trust. The story continues to build until Halloween Night.
Gabe reappears and is shocked to find Lexi lived through the crash. Lexi immediately confronts him. Gabe is in hiding from the rest of Briar Creek and he has to be careful about anyone seeing him. He manages to meet with Lexi and most of the story unravels thanks to Gabe.
Thicker than Water has me sold. I enjoyed Kiss of Death but loved this one. I can't wait for the next one. The Morse Sisters do have a wicked sense of a good cliffhanger which leaves you immediately wanting the next installment. This is an awesome series and I can't wait to read more.
(2.5 Stars) What on earth happened with "Thicker Than Water?" The story picks up right after the cliffhanger ending of the first book. Lexi wakes up in the hospital recovering from a car accident in which Gabe willfully caused the crash. To make matters worse, Lexi's dead friend's mother thinks she was in the accident that killed her son. She asks Lexi to go with her to view his body.
Lexi is very confused and not sure who to trust. But, once again she is surronded by boys who just cannot seem to keep away from her. She discovers that one of the boys she is attracted to is really not a boy but her gym teacher at her high school. Does this stop her from kissing him? No. This is one of the main problems that I am having with this series. While this may be written for YA audiences that does not mean they are stupid. Yet, Lexi time and time again continues to make rediculous decisions and acts gullible beyond belief.
I also had difficulty with the story line. For example when Lexi tries to runaway, she goes to a cafe where she meets a strange girl, Anna and immediately tells her, "Oh, I am running away from my Aunt and Uncle." Really? This was just one example of how convoluted the story line becomes at times. I also became so tired of "I love Gabe not I can't trust Gabe" dialogue. I found myself hissing at my kindle.
This story has potential but, the inconsistances and silliness of the characters just got in the way of my reading enjoyment; thus, the reason behind my 2.5 stars. I will go on to read the third book only because I bought all three books at the same time. However, if the storyline does not improve in the third book, I will not be going on any further in the series.
After the cliffhanger ending from the first book, this is a great start to the second book in the series! The book starts off with Lexi having a dream-like experience where she sees her mom and Austin. Both of them give her clues and warnings as to what is to come. Lexi then wakes up in the hospital with amnesia. Lexi's aunt and uncle treat her better right after the accident but her aunt insists she goes back to work immediately which seems quite strange.
Gabe is missing from the accident seen which makes Lexi feel like he tried to kill her. She also knows that Gabe is a vampire and suspects there are others but this book begins to unravel the secrets around Briar Creek. Gage eventually reappears and is shocked to see Lexi still alive. Gage tells Lexi he is in hiding from the rest of Briar Creek and that he has to be careful.
One thing I'm not crazy over is the fact it takes Lexi a while to figure things out or put them together when the reader had done that way before hand.
This series seems to always leave you with a cliffhanger only wanting to start the next book immediately.
Thicker Than Water picks up right where Kiss of Death left off. All the stuff I said in the review for Kiss of Death still apply to this book.
I read this book rather quickly, I liked the story line, I liked that it’s an easy read, and again the ending leaves an impossible cliff hanger. I got to the last page and wanted the third book. I contacted one of the authors because my daughter wanted to know when the third book was coming out and she said they are shooting for the end of this month (January).
If you like vampires, especially the old school kind that turn into bats, then you will like this. It’s nice to go back to the original vampire legends sometimes.
At the beginning, Lexi is having a dreamlike experience where she sees her Mom and Austin, and just like in Kiss of Death, Lexi's mom is warning her once again...but can't really tell her anything because it goes against the "rules"...Everyone at school wants to be her friend and chat about the accident that Lexi is so tired of discussing. All the guys ask her out. Lexi is wary of everyone because of her mom's warnings. She is alone and has no one she can trust.
Mary-Kate offers to bring Lexi to Austin's grave one day and of course, Lexi cuts school to go see it - since MK told her where it was. Trippy to see her own tombstone with A DATE FILLED IN OF HALLOWEEN NIGHT...The story continues to build until Halloween Night.
Now I really can't wait for #3 Destined to Die......
Book two basically picks up where book one ends. Lexi may be making a friend or two and Gabe is…….? hmmmm. She has started school and even has a part time job as a life guard. Her investigation into Austin’s death continues (which raises more questions) and she is spending a little more time with Dan?????? Her aunt and uncle are still insisting that he would be better for her. It appears that she may have someone that is trying to help her and may have someone following her. The ending to this one may just have beat the first book! LOL Enjoy!
The mysteries continue with the second book and it is just as intriguing as the first book. You will not be disappointed!
This bet the first book by 10,909 miles! And I also rediscovered my hating of cliffhangers. :( anyway this book was amazing! Totally worth reading. But I am right now in the poconos moutains so I have no wifi so I can't download the next book on my nook :( and I am not allowed to anyway. School reading sucks shit. PEACE ON THE STREET SAN!
I enjoyed this book more than the first and mostly because the main character, Lexi, has some idea what is going on in the town around her. Her only issue? How does she get out of there??? But it seems like someone is wanting to help her, leaving secret notes in her locker and telling her things to beware of. Such a twist when you realize who her ally is.
Still the same old strange series. I think Lexi is an idiot half the time. I would of bailed out a long time ago and a locked door wouldn't have stopped me in the least. I'd have a constant stake attached to me as well.
OMG!!!!!!!! HE'SSS BACKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry I'm like really happy. Also I like that it waz longer becuz that was the problem I had with the last book
Book one and two were so slow and hard to get through. I have learned from series that the first two usually are to build the story line. So far book three is really good. Stick with them!
Lexi's character improved. She matured a little and started focusing on what was important and spent less time worrying about the boys in her life. I was glad to see things finally start to happen.
