I loved the first book in the series well enough to try this one... well, I shouldn't have bothered, in all honesty.
This book seems pointless. The group left the bunker at the end of last book... only to circle back around to the bunker again by the end of this one. And what did we accomplish in the 300+ pages? Noting much.
Yes, we learned that the flu vaccine was responsible for spreading the Flence, and that those who didn't get the vaccine are immune. We also learned that the survivors left in this world are absolutely horrible people. I'm actually getting tired of this cliché that men would become savages only wanting to rape, murder and dominate others as soon as societal norms break down. Call me an optimist, but I think there are a lot more good men in the world than bad men, so not all survivors will be bad people.
But to come back to this book, that's about the sum of the accomplishments. None of the objectives the group set for themselves at the end of book 1 were accomplished in this book. Not even close. They never reached the evacuation point. They never learned about the whereabouts of Bunker 12. And Finn never found his brother.
I also didn't like Finn in this book. He is riddled with self-doubt, but also extremely judgmental of everyone else who is prepared to do what needs to be done to keep people safe. Especially Bix and Jonah. I mean really dude? You are going to judge your best friend for being willing to kill the bad guys to save your other friends? Didn't we just dwell for an entire book into how horrible the world is post Flence and how it's full of horrible people? A bit rich of you, Finn, don't you think?
Finn is also not a very proactive protagonist in this book. In fact, the plot armor is strong with this one. And almost all of the tough spots he found himself in, he got out because other people made the though choices. He had to just sit back and reap the rewards. It got extremely irritating after a while.
All in all, I'm disappointed with how this story (didn't) progress in this book, so I'm not sure I will pick up the next one. Maybe once enough time passes and my irritation fades away.
Solid sequel indeed! The first book takes a while to get you invested, as in over halfway, at least. However, I experienced the same when reading author's other series, The Flense. (3 of 4 read as of date of review), and I was pleased I chose to continue. So this time, I wasn't concerned or tempted to stop reading. This sequel in Bunker series was pretty great, lots of suspense and overall energetic. Things are slightly discombobulated within the plot. Get a sense that author might've had some long breaks in between writings of large chunks of this book. But it's not much of an issue. Mostly missed chances that could have made this a 4.5 star. Side note: Saul Tanpepper has not let me down, over 3 different, and very long series. Always an intriguing, engaging read. I now can rely on him to provide, on average, a 4/3.7 star read. I'm still in my book funk, but I went to this author, knowing it wouldn't solve it, but also knowing I wouldn't fall further into my book hole and would get a sense of satisfaction from reading. Something I've been desperate for over the past few months.
got the sequel tru kindle unlimited bc i read the first book and really enjoyed it. i like how this one not only had finns point of view but it also had eddies and jonah. i was hoping the 2 farmers were good people but nope , that cage scene i was really hopin bix was faking and good thing he was and didnt die! but the other 2 died bc they took too long to kill the wraith :C the scene when johan and danny had to leave the group to go to the store to check the gruesome scene was not a good idea i was hopin nobody would die. it was intense too when the wraiths appeared and the group was fighting them on top of the bus. and the revelation that jonathan was imune bc he didnt take the flu shot. like bix is. at least 2 times bix scared me bc i thought he would die im glad he didnt bc hes proven to be a valuable member of the group just like jonah and finn and eddie. eddie too scared me a couple of times thinking he was gonna get himself into trouble by askin so many questions. i was hoping nothin bad would happen to bren and hannah and the other women too. so now at the end the group is all back toghter but finn has to go back to the bunker bc the reverend has his brother harper. the book kept me entertained and curious to what was gonna happen next. finn is always comparing himself to harper which is not a good thing bc he was doin the best he could. bren honestly was kinda useless idk. at the end of this book we get a lil novella of where finns sister leah and mom mara are and what happened to them. they are in a lil cabin up north and theyve been there for 7 months so far im glad we got this lil novella about them..i havent finished it yet but i hope they are alive
Finn and a group of his friends and neighbors depart Bunker 12, leaving grief, betrayal, and a murderer behind them. It’s unfortunate that they find more of the same out in a desolate world, one where the worst monsters are the ones that call themselves human. It might be worth the risk eventually, if the rumors they’re pursuing lead to a chance for a better world.
The pace is fast, and the plot becomes increasingly complex. There are new characters introduced, and existing characters from book one developing further within this story. I like Finn and Bix better in this installment, and I think Eddie’s now my favorite. There’s also a few twists and surprises along the way. I enjoyed it, and I’m waiting for the next one!
The next chapter in Saul's excellent Bunker 12 series picks up straight from where the last left us. As usual it has a great pace and excitement. There was a feel of a western about it despite being set in a post-apocalyptic world which I liked. I recommend everyone to read this along with the sister series The Flense. As usual, it isn't your average PA story. I am looking forward to the next chapter.
A much better book than Contain. I initially thought it was going to fall into the same pitfalls as The Walkibg Dead series did, where they spend the entire season in one place - but this jumps around quite a lot, sometimes to the point of being improbable. But it proves to be a much more enjoyable read this time around, and the wraiths don’t seem so goofy in this book now that they’re an actual threat.
There’s more of Eddie in this book, which I appreciate. There’s also way more of Bix, which I do not. Jonah undergoes some much needed character development. Finn fills his boots of being a leader a bit more, but remains a little boring. Bren is hardly in this book at all, aside from being the damsel in distress. There’s way more villains in this book, though some of them aren’t around for very long. Some places feel sinister but don’t have real payoff, too, which is a shame.
Overall, the series is coming into its own a bit. Looking forward to the next instalment, and maybe I will care a bit more about Finn by then.
This is the second Book in the Bunker 12 Flense Book Series .
Another action packed book in this series I'm really enjoying this series so far . Know my favorite character's so far are Bix and Eddie Bix because although he may be the joker he also has the ball's to get the job done . And Eddie because despite what he has become he's still a strong father figure to them all and that include the main protagonist . The third would be Johna because at least he's trying to do something good despite what people think of him . As for Finn he needs to grow the hell up he needs to understand that he's not Harper and he never will be this back and forth is starting to grate . And I'm iffy on Bren why would she take the soldiers back to their old bunker I hope that's answered in the next book .
I was really surprised by how much I am loving this series! I read the first book in the series yesterday and the second book today. I plan to just keep reading until I run out of books in the series. Great beach read, I was planning on doing things on the beach other than reading but the series really has me hooked. Can't recommend enough!!
I enjoyed how this book dug deeper into the supporting characters. I did however feel that there were just too many lucky breaks. So many dangerous situations and all main characters always escape unscathed. I also struggle with the fact there are no important female characters other than the love interest and she may not have even had any dialogue.
While I know this is the second in a series, I still don't like the cliffhanger ending. The story progression is done well, with characters growing and developing.
Bix screamed at them as they passed. With each lightning flash, he seemed to become more and more like a crazed phantom, his undies hanging half-way to his ankles. "I thought you were going to zap me for sure," he shouted at Finn as they rode.
The Flense is still creating Wraiths but after Finn, Bix and a few other survivors leave the so called safety of Bunker 8 in search of Bunker 12, they realize other survivors may be monsters in different ways.
Good reading, lots of thoughts went into writing this book. You never know what’s next. I also thought the little novel at the end was good, always wondered what happened to them.
This definitely is a cliff hanger, which I normally am not a fan of, but I already have book 3 ready to read. Book flowed well, storyline is easy to follow.
Picks up a little after the last one so there’s a little jet lag between the two books which makes for an interesting beginning. Has some predictable Big Bad Guys™️ but still very enjoyable
I must confess; I wasn't expecting as much from the sequel. Part of what worked for me in the first book was the close confines of the first bunker. That was a great setup for the interactions, the fear and tension.
Thankfully, Saul does it again with the sequel. If anything, some of the tension has been ratcheted up! Once again I felt myself drawn to characters and wanting to know what would happen to them.
I have a pretty good imagination, but even I could not have seen where Saul was going to take this. Which is why he's the writer, and I devour whatever he puts out :D
They leave the bunker and run into some people. Good. Bad. It's the way the world is now. You don't know who you can trust. The twists and turns in this, were for me, nail biting. And the way he ended it? Making us wait until some time after the New Year, for the next part? Not OK. But well worth it, for such writing.
Bunker 12 was my first book of Saul's and I have been in love with his storytelling ever since.
An exciting sequel to 'Contain' - following the events after the group leaves the Bunker. There are several plot-threads, as the group is split up - and not everyone survives. Once again the narrative stops at a convenient point with no complete resolution, so we are left waiting (im)patiently for the next volume... One or two tantalising snippets of information about the Flense and the worldwide events are dropped into the mix.
Not a good point to start the sequence but a more than decent second installment!
Much better than the first book but still had some odd storytelling devices. Several times the story would jump several hours into the future or the past and then come back to the present without clear indicators to the reader that this was happening.
So I purchased this after reading and enjoying the 1st book in the series (The Flense, which was in a post apocalyptic collection) but this one just didn't capture my need to know what happened next, so I won't be continuing with the series.
I hate the new world. I hate that Saul's writing brings the horrible people to life so well. I am thankful to know that there will be 2 more novels :D I am so looking forward to see what happens!
