In her 37th bestselling novel, Danielle Steel tells the compelling story of a woman who must struggle to overcome a shattering betrayal, and the cruelest kind of malice.
At seventeen, the night of her mother's funeral, Grace Adams is attacked. It is not the first time, and a brutal crime ensues.
And to everyone's horror, Grace will not tell the truth. She is a young woman with secrets too horrible to tell, with hurts so deep they may never heal. She is also beautiful enough for men to want her no matter how much she does not want them. Whatever the outcome, Grace Adams will have to live with whatever happened during those terrible years. After a lifetime of being a victim, now she must pay the price for other people's sins.
From the depths of an Illinois women's prison to a Chicago modeling agency to a challenging career in New York, Grace must carry the past with her wherever she goes. And in healing her own pain, she reaches out to battered women and children who live a nightmare she knows all too well.
When Grace meets Charles Mackenzie, a New York lawyer, she has found a man who wants nothing from her--except to heal her, to hear her secrets, and to give her the family she so desperately wants. But, with happiness finally within her grasp, and precious loved ones to protect, Grace is at her most vulnerable--in danger of losing everything to a vicious tabloid press and an enemy from her past, an enemy bent on malice at all costs.
With rare insight and power, Danielle Steel writes this extraordinary woman's story, portraying her struggle to triumph over malice and betrayal, and to transform a lifetime of pain into a blessing for others. Revealing both the stark reality of domestic abuse and the healing power of love, Malice, is more than superb fiction. It is a piece of life.
Danielle Steel has been hailed as one of the world's bestselling authors, with almost a billion copies of her novels sold. Her many international bestsellers include All That Glitters, Royal, Daddy's Girls, The Wedding Dress, The Numbers Game, Moral Compass, Spy, and other highly acclaimed novels. She is also the author of His Bright Light, the story of her son Nick Traina's life and death; A Gift of Hope, a memoir of her work with the homeless; Expect a Miracle, a book of her favorite quotations for inspiration and comfort; Pure Joy, about the dogs she and her family have loved; and the children's books Pretty Minnie in Paris and Pretty Minnie in Hollywood.
My first book by Daniel Steel. I found it incredibly insightful and beautifully heartbreaking. Big words, but I mean them completely. The summary here pretty much tells you how the story progresses. It follows the journey of Grace, a girl who is victimized and has endured far more than should be fair. Her strength and character are an important part of the story, and leave you inspired. This book deals with abuse, both physical and mental. It captured my complete attention and didn't give me any time to get bored. There were constant punches and speculations throughout the story. But for me the best part was in the beginning i.e. the court case. Legal disputes are always far more interesting to me, which I guess is a result of reading too much Perry Mason. One thing I wasn't impressed by was the ending. But probably because I didn't want it to end. Malice is the correct term to describe what leads to the events of this story and it is disturbing to think how realistic it all is. This is the kind of book which makes you think about a lot of issues and empathize, and reconsider your views on people. It's also one of the books I refuse to find faults with. I would summarize it as intense, feminine and powerful.
First of all, I would like to clarify that I’m not really a huge fan of Steel, I’m just reading some of her books because guess what! My grandma decided it was a perfect idea for her to lend me half of her books and… well, you can perfectly see that she was a huge fan of Steel, so, I’m trying my best to finish them so I can give them back.
-Adult -Fiction -Contemporary -Small LGBTQ+ rep -Grace has terrible experiences with all men she knows until one day, one actually gains her trust, basically -I’d say the book revolves around a victim of a lot of sexual abuse and disgusting harassment experiences -The feeling of impotence and rage generated by the book is shocking -The plot is somewhat entertaining, very tough but as I said, it's supposed to make people angry -The romance is a bit too fast-paced for my taste, however this is just one of a few couples that I actually like from Steel’s books. -Quote I enjoyed: “Don’t make decisions out of fear. They never get you anywhere you want to go.” -Plot twists/😨Moments: 3/5 -Characters: 3/5 -Plot: 4/5
Since this is the first Danielle Steel novel I've ever read, I figured a brief review was necessary. Let me make one thing perfectly clear, right out of the gate. Ms Steel is a terrible writer. Yes, terrible. Fragments, run on sentences, and grammatically incorrect narratives abound. With that being said, Ms. Steel is a great storyteller (much in the same way that Sidney Sheldon is a horrific writer, but can spin a tale of deception, murder, and double crosses with a dab of back-stabbing like nobody's business). I've noticed that reviews for other Danielle Steel novels see-saw from positive to negative, as with any other author. For me, Malice was riveting for most of its 406 pages, although the end was anti-climatic and wrapped up a bit too tidy. Nonetheless, I can see that Ms Steel will become one of those guilty pleasures to indulge in from time to time. Oh, who am I kidding? I've got six more stacked on the shelf right now!!
My Mother in Law wanted me to read this book. She just finished it and was so excited about it. I could tell she wanted me to love it like she did, but she is a Daniel Steel fan and a love story fan. I am not. I took the book and thought I will try to get through it for her. Omg boy was I wrong. I couldn’t put it down.
As I finished each chapter I would think things are going to get better for Grace. Yet they didn’t. One bad thing after another happened and no matter what happens she never faltered. If you have not read this book down load it or run to your local book store and grab it. It was a great read.
I’m really surprised at all the good reviews for this book. Were people not disgusted by the content? As I was reading the first 50 pages, I actually considered trashing it (not donating it to the library or book box, but trashing or burning it) because I was so disgusted. It had so many good reviews though, so I decided to see if it got better. There were parts I enjoyed, but it is just so unlikely that one person would have that many horrific experiences. I also struggle with Danielle Steel’s poor writing.
Many of her story ideas are good, but her writing is consistently bad. I was also annoyed that most of the book went along in a normal frame of time and then, all of a sudden (in the middle of a chapter), 10 years passed within just a few pages so the author could begin torturing the main character again. Even with her records sealed, she had to know someone would get to the story about her murdering her father and his abuse of her. It made no sense to put her family in the public eye. That was just too easy.
One thing that really bothered me is why Grace and her father weren’t DNA tested. DNA was first used for rape cases in 1987. This was almost 10 years later. Had they been tested, her story would have been verified. I found it unlikely that no one believed her anyway, but testing would have proven that he had sex with his daughter. Just a little something that bothered me as I was reading it. Danielle Steel shouldn’t be writing legal novels. She’s no John Grisham (on any level).
Aside from a few good sections, I thought the book was trash. How can anyone enjoy reading about a mother forcing her 14-year old daughter to have sex with her husband because she has cancer and can’t do it herself? It’s just disgusting. This one is getting trashed. I’m not donating it for anyone else to read.
It was just a traumatic yet engaging read. I have nothing much to ssay about it except that it's a typical Danielle Steel book.Sweet and beautiful heroine going through sad times all the time, very bad experiences, swoon worthy boy friend who respects women, marriage to a man older than her by at leasgt 20 years, more than two children,etc..
I’m beginning to like Danielle Steele’s book. They are of medium pace, a lot of things happens within 450 pages, and it’s entertaining and teaching.
Absolutely one of Danielle Steel's best -- far more intense and brutal than her usual story. I loved the way Grace kept meeting with tragedy and disaster but she never gave in and kept caring about others. Though I do wish the perfect husband at the end could have been more than just "a nice guy."
This was such a heart wrenching story if a 17 year old Grace Adams, she suffered so much from the age of 14 and from there on her life changed completely, she was charged with murder and sent to jail in jail she took her degree and made friends who help her in all possible way then came to Chigaco there again she goes through a horrible time leaves from there and comes to another place where she finds love of her life Charlie Mackenzie, the age difference is of 20 years but the love that they share is so deep, they are living a perfect life Grace has left her past behind and is happy with her 3 children and Charlie is standing up in politics that is when again her past catches up with her and again she life is turned upside down, she suffers a miscarriage and even loses Charlie's trust so she leaves but then again Charlie-Grace stand together and they start collecting their life pieces and once again they have their life back
Grace is such a strong women, she has a spine of a steel god so much she suffered and still managed to make a good life with her but then when again her past catches up with her i was like ohh please not again she deserves to be happy but yet again Grace manages to put her life back together and this time she has Charlie also with her
Grace-Charlie's love is so sweet and heart warming, both complete each other and in between the storm Charlie's trust was a little shaken but nor completely broken but he realises that he should'nt have left Grace alone and then again their love manages to come through the storm unaffected
it was such a emotional read, though many readers have reviewed as terrible read but i liked it very much do keep loads of tissue boxes in handy while reading Recommend it
Haven't read this author for years and I have to say I cried, and my heart broke all the way through this one woman's journey in a man's world. She went through the ringer and I went with her. Danielle steel wrote it in such a way as I felt every emotion, the anger I felt at times was unbelievable. It is about abuse which can be a taboo subject for some readers but it's not graphic or over used part of the story.
Trash, trash, trash. Wow, this is garbage. I took it off my late mother's bookshelves, knowing that her taste in books was questionable (while respecting that she read a lot), but thinking I shouldn't criticise without reading. Well, it fulfilled every negative expectation I had. The prose is pedestrian; the characters two-dimensional; the plot twists unrealistic.
There are two types of character: Good and Bad. There are brief moments when a Bad character might appear Good, but it's never convincing and you know they're going to turn out Bad. There is nothing subtle. Need to get rid of a character? Cancer or a plane crash. Need a scandal? Rely on the press to be unremittingly Bad. The truth is a better story, as anyone could see, but not here because journalists are always Bad.
The prose is stultifyingly dull. "And she did this and he did that and he said this and she thought that"; on and on over 450 pages; the only flicker of imagination comes when a character who is under the weather is described as having "a face like St Patrick's day". That's right: just one artistic flourish in the whole book.
How can a writer be satisfied writing such unartistic prose? I don't know. It must be a job, like sweeping streets or emptying bins, except Steel doesn't need to. She's rich. She can take a risk. At what point does someone like Steel say, "Actually, I'm rich enough and don't need to produce rubbish; maybe I'll stretch myself"? But after 30-odd books, Steel just cranks the handle and another formulaic piece of garbage plops onto the bestseller lists.
It's like watching the Rolling Stones: still cranking out the old hits, but in their case at least the old hits had something exciting about them way back when. This is just drab, industrial, production-line writing. Turn the handle; cash the cheque. The poverty of ambition is depressing.
Danielle Steel is a HUGE guilty pleasure for me. Her writing can be awful at times, but the smooth flow and quick pace of her plots can be thorougly enjoyable. So usually when I read Danny Steel, it's not for the literary merit or the substance of the story.
Malice was different. I was interested to see how Steel would write on such a dark subject matter, but Malice impressed me.
Not only did she obviously do her research, but it actually felt like she had something to say. It wasn't an empty or half assed attempt on a book about sexual abuse, and I applaud Danielle Steel for raising awareness on such an important issue. Especially considering this book was published over 15 years ago, when there wasn't nearly as much awareness or social consciousness about abuse as there is now.
A solid four stars for Malice, I was pleasantly surprised :)
Grace Adams is a woman with a past full of deep, dark, hurtful secrets. A stunning beauty, daughter of an influential lawyer, she has spent the last years nursing her dying mother through her final battle with cancer. On the night of her mother's funeral, she is brutally raped by her father and, after years of such repeated abuse, she snaps and kills him.
Only 17 years old, she faces the death penalty in a town that is only too willing to believe in and continually perpetrate the supposedly perfect reputation of her father, even if it means prison for Grace. After her release two years later, she tries to pick up the pieces of her life. Eventually, she falls in love with and marries Charles Mackenzie, an up-and-coming politician and they start a family together.
During an important campaign, a tabloid releases the sordid story of Grace's past as well as several explicit photos of Grace taken while she was drugged. This leaves their family reeling; with Charles's campaign in shambles and Grace's life crumbling around her. I really enjoyed this book. It was a departure from Danielle Steel's other work and I give it an A+!
UGH!! i wish she was a better writer! i am probably the only person in america that doesn't like her writing, but there it is. the plots of her books are pretty good, predictable, but good. but i hate how her sentences describing things go on and on and on. i don't know why i read this book. honestly, i just needed something to occupy my mind as i sat out in the sun the yesterday.
Debut y despedida. Igual, nunca digas nunca, el consumo irónico me gusta...
Leave it Steel to start off great, then spectacularly crash the plane into a ground.
Why, Steel. Why? This started so great. I was in love. The beginning was powerful, phenomenal, even. I loved the shift to evil, the big reveal of Grace's father. I felt for Grace so much.
Then Steel had to make so maple-syrup sweet to the point of illness.
Grace goes to prison, and, while I'm glad that part wasn't lingered on too much-That would've been boring-the whole thing was just done too cleanly. Grace gets almost gang-raped, but, of course, because she is so sweet and likable, someone sticks up and protects her.
When she gets out, it all becomes so dismal. She gets a job at a modeling agency and shares a lovely house with a bunch of other models who think she should be a model. She gets abused by her parole officer, which is a nice storyline, but not played up enough. Then she gets almost raped again, but survived it fine.
That was what irked so much. Grace has been raped by her father for three years, and comes up almost emotionally unscathed. She shows no sign of emotional damage. No anxiety or depression. Instead, she devoted herself to charitable works, like a nun, even though nothing was her fault.
The romance was ripped out of another novel. It was fused with a glamourous Hollywood story that made the rest of the book lifeless.
Every now and again, I am given a pile of books of a genre I do not buy. I think it is healthy to read some of these. Although hey are supposedly set in reality, they are often less believable than fantasy stories I prefer !!
I was so surprised with this one, honestly you would think that an author who has written so many books wouldn't forget a small but important detail...DNA testing, blood splatter analysis, scene of crime photos...etc Yep I've watched and read a few good crime series ad am now an expert !!!
It was so glaringly obvious !!!!
But I did persevere and read the rest of the book. Her poor heroines always have such bad luck with their lives...and this one, phew what a life. Well as usual with DS it is a happy ending.
After reading some really good fantasy books, this seemed so shallow - sorry fans of DS.
Es un libro que me ha encantado, igual que el resto que he leído de esta escritora. Aunque tiene momentos en los que la historia es un poco dura porque no es agradable lo que cuenta.
I don't understand why other people thought this book was terrible! I thought this was a great book, although there were some sentences that seemed like "run ons" to me. I make a lot of run ons though so I shouldn't say anything. Back on topic"." I know I am still very young, and I haven't developed a vast knowledge of what kind of books seem right for me, and what doesn't.. I literally thought this book was great! I wasn't really too keen on the idea of how Danielle went to a lot of detail of the "rape" scenes. I thought it was a little too much.
I tried to get into other books of Danielle's but it didn't really work out. I walked into borders and asked one of the employees to appoint me to Danielle's book collections, and there weren't any that seemed as good as Malice. But I must say.. Danielle's writing style is easy to read, and enjoyable. Hopefully I could get some recommendations of books like this or are similar to this book.
One more thing. I don't know why I type this in almost every review but, this book should be turned into a movie. Well not really a movie but maybe pictures of how the characters would look like. Especially for Grace and Charles. I would love to see how beautiful Grace is, and how handsome Charles is. Ha-ha. It makes me realize now that all the characters in this book were beautiful. Come on Danielle.. don't make this book like the Pretties! Just kidding. The characters are like the Pretties but they're smart.
IN CONCLUSION, this was the most I have ever written for a review so far. I wouldn't really recommend this book to anybody because not many people do like this book, and I don't think the people I was thinking of recommending this to isn't going to like this either. But you never know.. there are a lot of people in this world that might love this book as much as me.
This is my favorite book among all Daniel Steel's books up to date. Mostly her books represent the extreme of every issue pertaining our community giving them an unrealistic touch. Malice. though, on one hand representing the extreme of media's interference to ruin one's life also corresponds to the hardcore realities of incest cases in our society. Grace Adams a teenager of 17 is forced to kill her father while he attempted to rape her. As the story continues we learn that she was forced to for 'it' with her father since 13 when her mother got vaginal cancer. Grace refuses to tell the truth. After much prodding from a psychiatrist and her lawyer she admits the truth but her father being a popular figure among the society prejudiced the jury and they charged her for voluntary manslaughter. She is sent to jail where she survives particularly hard times. After that she gets employed my a modeling agency where she faces new challenges and learn crucial realities about surviving alone in this world. After her two years of probation, she moves to New York and starts working for a law firm. She also did charity work to serve battered women and children and bring them out of the trauma she knew so well. She gets married to her boss Charles Mackenzie, who is horrified to discover such a young and beautiful girl who had suffered more than anyone can handle. He just wants to heal her by loving her and giving her a family she yearned for but was too scared to pursue. When it seemed nothing could go wrong, something goes terribly wrong. Her family, her respect, her status is practically ruined when someone from her past strikes back. An enemy bent on pure Malice aiming to make her miserable for the rest of her life. Malice is a must read story. It teaches us many things apart from the unjust realities of life.
What an amazing story of Grace. A victim since the age of 13 and victimized her entire life from her Father, to employer, etc. How she overcame her past, paid it forward to others. From a small town in Illinoies, to Women's Prison, to a career in NYC to Washington. A story of strength and overcoming what life hands you. Love, loved this story. I'd like to meet someone as caring as Charles McKenzie. Friends and the people in your life with help you through your worst nightmare , once you let them in.
This has been my first experience of Danielle Steel’s writing and I have to say it was exactly what I was expecting. It was the domestic novel I thought it would be, just a lot more intense and emotionally harrowing than I think I was prepared for. Definitely a great discussion on coping with abuse and grief; I would recommend you stay away if themes such as rape/sexual abuse/miscarriages trigger you.
This was, like so, bad because, she does not, understand the use of the comma. Or the sentence fragment. Or plot. I read it on a plane and left it in a laundromat.
This was my 3rd book I read by this author. It was a great story, heartbreaking at times. Strong Characters and a great ending. I will definitely be rereading this. Highly Recommended!
