Rate this book
Things haven't been the same for Jacob since his mother quit talking, eating, and getting out of bed. He is confused one morning when she wakes him with the words, "We're leaving." Jacob finds himself on a journey to a small town from his mother's childhood where she hopes he will find safety before she dies. In a new town, a new school, and with a mother losing her battle with depression, Jacob's life is turned upside-down. Lace Pearlshom, the social outcast from Jacob's homeroom, adds to the confusion with her uncanny way of appearing out of shadows and disappearing up blind alleys. She pushes her way, unwelcome, into Jacob's life. Lace may hold the key to saving Jacob's mother, but can he accept the cost? In the unlikely friendship that develops Jacob learns the secrets behind Lace's mysteries and comes to understand the tragic circumstances of her life. His efforts to help her unexpectedly brings in the Child Protective Services which is determined to take Lace away. Can a friendship this deep ever be broken? Can two broken lives make the world whole?

The main character, Jacob, has is life completely uprooted when his mom wakes him up one morning and runs out the door. He chases her to the bus stop and they leave everything that he has ever known behind. She takes him to a place where he meets wonderful, strange, and caring people. He also witnesses the uglier side of life and sees the consequences that come from ignoring people for the cause of "minding your own business". There is a brightness though that comes in the form of a girl named Lace. She teaches Jacob adventure, hope, and forgiveness. This story will keep you sucked in from the first page to the last.

This is one of those books that you simply cannot put down. Each page is filled with rich story and interesting and relatable characters. I actually snuck this book under the covers after my husband had fallen asleep. There aren't very many books that I will risk waking my husband up for. I just could not wait until morning to find out what happened next. The scenery is vibrant and the characters are full of detail and life. This is definitely an unforgettable story that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

Leaving me with a bitter-sweet contentment, I put this book down with a sigh.
This book follows, Jacob, a young boy, who is constantly struggling between two feelings; love and regret towards his mother. As The reader you are also thrown into this cascade of emotion. Then enters Lace, a skinny ray of sunshine who magically appears in Jacobs’s life. You soon learn that Lace’s life is anything but full of sunny days, and she still has far to go. Joining forces Jacob and Lace embark on a mission that will leave both changed. Forever.
This book balances, beauty, humor, friendship, and a pure sense of love, into a wonderful tale of two friends, a sick mother, a grumpy old man, and a small town.
This story proves that friendship, and love, can heal any broken person.

This...is...BEAUTIFUL!
I love all the characters(but to summarize without giving too much away), I love Lace the most. She's so fearless, so determined, not really caring what everybody else thinks about her, yet she's sensitive and sweet. She's a beautifully-made character, complete with all the ingredients of a masterpiece, but with a secret something that made her even better than any character I have EVER read about.
Something that really touched me was the relationship status with Jacob and Marie. As I read those scenes, I could feel that the author really put his heart into it. The emotions expressed are so real, it was breath-taking. And I absolutely adored it.

I really liked it! The ending was really sad! It was sort of one of those kinds of stories where you know whats going to happen, but you keep reading, hoping it won't really happen. It was fun to read, knowing the author, because I saw little things that he stuck in it from his life. There were four religious exlcamations.

It was really good. Stories like this, about someone life, are amazing and fun to read about. There is something in this was slow, like life, but was fun in the adventure and the unexpected things that can happen in life.

Loved this book! Great story. Made me cry. I would LOVE to read a sequel about when they are a few years older. (hint, hint)

I really, really wanted to give this book a solid 4-star rating, but I just couldn't.

This book was donated to my school's library by the author, and a lot of students had it on hold, so I read it to see what the fuss was about.

_Jacob and Lace_ started out fantastically, and I quickly got into the book. The characters were quirky and timeless at the same time, and about halfway into the book I felt like I was reading a modern _Bridge to Terabithia_.

HOWEVER, it killed me when I got to the end of the book and there was NO ending. Yes, the book ended (duh), but it left a ton of loose ends. I'll admit I was angry as I finished; I'd grown to care about the characters, and I felt like they were just left hanging in space, and didn't deserve to be.

If you're looking at this book for younger readers, there was a smattering of profanity (never the F-word) and several instances of extreme parental neglect, which could be triggers for people who've been in similar situations.

Jacob and Lace by Tory Anderson is my first read by this MG author.

The story of two unlikely friends is touching. Jacob's life is turned upside down when his depressed mother suddenly uproots them from their life in California to a tiny town. Lace is an outcast living on the fringes of rural life. The friendship is tenderly formed and as the relationship grows both their lives change for the better. But change, no matter the outcome, is often painful and it is no different for these two characters.

The story is well crafted and told with heart. Middle grade readers might find it a little slow, but it moves at a steady pace and there is much to be learned and gained from the story.

I'd read more by this author.
