Once, there was a librarian, a warrior woman, and a love story that was out of this world...and now they're back in an all-new adventure!
Holly would never have believed that the gorgeous woman who appeared in her backyard one magical night (wielding a sword) would turn out to be the love of her life--but the lady knight Virago is exactly that. Virago and Holly are madly in love, and Virago is still learning the ways of our world (and becoming slightly addicted to coffee). But as much as Virago loves Holly, she can't forget the world she came from.
One night, another massive storm descends on Boston, and this time, four new women appear in Holly's backyard, each one of them wielding a sword. They are close friends and fellow knights of Virago, but they're not here to visit. They have come through the portal to ask Virago back one last time. The queen of Virago's beloved city is in danger and needs Virago's help.
Holly is a librarian who always wished magic was real. And now, her new girlfriend is going to take her to another world. With an assassin on the loose and an evil king out to get the queen, what could possibly go wrong?
DATE KNIGHT is a light-hearted, fantastical romance that will take you on a journey you’ll never forget. It is a sequel to A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER
My name is Bridget Essex, and I write about werewolves, vampires and lady knights; about two strong, courageous women who fall deeply in love with one another, living love stories that transcend time. I'm married to the love of my life, author Natalie Vivien.
I'm best known for my Knight Legends series, stories about women knights, real world hi-jinks and love stories that are out of this world. My Sullivan Vampire novellas are a popular series lauded as "TWILIGHT for women who love women," and I have several other series and stand-alone novellas, and I'm always putting out something new. This book, along with it’s predecessor “A Knight to Remember”, surprised me. Lesbian knights, magic and other worlds should have kept me awake with excitement and multiple relistenings. But no…it just didn’t work for me. Bored me pretty thoroughly, for the most part.
This sequel is written a bit better, and 30ish yo MC Holly sounds much less like the young teen character she seemed in book one. But much of the narrative still sounds like reading the diary of a very young girl who dreams of unicorns and flying horses. Oh, by the way, Holly is very proud of the fact that she has several unicorn lamps and flying horse decorations in her bedroom!
The author, Bridget Essex, is very open about having had a truly horrific adolescence after coming out. Today, she writes of women Knights, vampires, werewolves and other powerful fantastical creatures. I suspect that her “Knight” series may be based upon some of her early escapist imaginings, and even as an adult she writes of Holly and the knights from the viewpoint of a lonely adolescent. The “true love” between Holly and Virago is established after about a week of their original meeting, and is never made any more believable than any childhood fairy tale of “true love”.
In this second book, we explore Virago’s homeworld through Holly’s eyes, but for all the potential of court intrigue, loyalty, love and betrayal…it’s a fairly superficial view, and never really excites me.
I do think this is overall superior to book one, but it’s still only a 3* - meh rating from me. I was kind of glad I finally finished it!
The third installment. We get to catch up with Holly and Virago from book 1, but this time we travel to the knights world of Agrotera. Where the queen is in danger.
I enjoyed catching up with our lovers from book 1, and meeting the fellow lady knights and their queen while discovering more about this magical world.
There's a lot of open questions and plot points that I am hoping get addressed in further books. Although I'm starting to worry that may not be the case 😬.
It's a tiny bit frustrating that it appears the timeline and chronological order of the books is messed up. Technically this book should have come right after book 1, and book 2 actually takes place after this third installment.
*Helpful hint: If you are reading this review before reading anything in this series, read A Knight to Remember then this book here (which is a direct sequel, both in time and in characters), then read Forever and a Knight (which, chronologically, actually takes place after Date Knight. I think; also involves different characters.)*
It’s unfortunate but I didn’t really have ‘fun’ with this book. Cutting off everything from roughly 0% to 68%, and everything from 96% to 100% and the book was interesting and fun-ish.
The beginning part of the book, at least up to 50 percent had ‘stuff’ happening, but it was really annoyingly wordy. Calling it purple prose might be a bit too strong, but at the very least it was leaning heavily in that direction. Could probably have been recorded with fewer words, less extravagant words. Well, melodramatic? Something.
The book opens on the one week anniversary of Virago returning from her world to be with Holly. They plan to celebrate with a date night. While heading back from a day of watching Virago joust, and get ready for the night, it gets all stormy and stuff. They get caught in rain. Lightning. Holly looks out into her backyard and . . . what do you know, there’s a bunch of women in armor back there. Virago’s quite happy. For they are ‘her’ knights (and, in addition there is also, as eventually realized, her Queen). They’ve come because they need Virago because the Queen’s life is in danger (if it matters at any point, the Queen is named Calla).
First, though, they go paint the town red, so to speak. Holly leads the merry band of knights and Queen to a lesbian bar in Boston. They get drunk, they flirt, do stuff. Then everything gets all weird when the crowd suddenly goes all quiet. And stare. At the front door, through which struts an angry woman dressed in all black armor. Vibrating with power. Accusing Virago of doing evil (as in kidnapping the queen). Eventually it comes out that, no, the queen hadn’t been kidnapped. And stuff. And they have to go back NOW! Or something. So they go back to Holly’s place so that she can get her dog. And lots of clothing. Which she doesn’t actually need, but whatever (the clothing that is; or, for that matter, the dog). All that I’ve conveyed took 50% of the book to convey. Much better than I am here, of course, but still. It was, quite frankly, not that interesting to me.
The vast majority of the rest of the book takes place back on Virago’s planet. Whose name isn’t in the book description and I don’t really know how to spell it. Aorgatoara or something like that. Things are tense. Everyone’s nervous that ‘something’ is going to happen. And the queen has to continuously put herself into danger because her city is hosting the Hero’s Tournament. And therefore if she isn’t out in the open, she’d be admitting weakness, and that’d be exactly like being defeated in war. So she has to be out there. Eventually the big bad guy finally attacks, stuff occurs, the end of the book. This occurs in the second half of the book. And, for the most part, was interesting enough, to be somewhat riveting. At least some scenes here and there.
Note - there some plot holes, and inconsistencies. Or, at least, things brought up that are not later of importance. Like, in the beginning of the book the queen is super sad and wants to resign. Which would immediately destabilize the country, and put it into prime 'taking over' mode for evil king of next door country to swoop in and take over. That was badly worded. That early 'I just want to resign' is countered later with a queen in the second half of the book who just wants to do the right thing, and stand up against King Evil; which includes putting herself out there for assassins to try to assassinate. A vague thought I had that I'm not conveying well.
So, as I indicated at the beginning, I didn’t really have the fun with the book that I expected. Part of the ‘decrease’ in tension is the simple fact that I realized instantly that the book I was reading actually took place in time, chronologically, before the second book in the series occurred. And since I’d seen how the world looked in that second book . . . I kind have had a lot of the tension that could have been there just . . . not be there. So, all in all, this barely made it to a 2.8 rating. This gets conveyed as a 3 star rating as there is no other real way of conveying something near 2.8 stars.
This sequel is just as good as the first book. I love these characters, and at times I wish I was one or the other. I'm a sucker for a woman with a sword (I'm a diehard Xena fan!), and I find women that read sexy. So having both in the same book is like ambrosia. There is true love, there is the "unknown" factor, there is a trip to another world, there is a bit of fighting, and there is a little loving in the bedroom (and elsewhere)...what more could you ask for? Thank you to the author for sharing her gift.
I read the first book in which Holly and Virago met, but it’s been awhile. Fortunately, I didn’t really need to recall it at all. In this book, they go to Agrotera, Virago’s home world. There were sections that seemed kind of slow, but they built the background for the excitement to come. There were plenty of exciting moments, too. For all her worries, Holly is pretty perceptive and realizes right away how the much disliked Charaxis feels about Calla. Essex does a good job of building up the relationships and depicting the world through Holly’s eyes. There is an ominous build up to the finale, and I did not like what happened with Charaxis, but she definitely proved to be heroic. I’m looking forward to the next book about the knights.
Whew! I enjoyed this book so much more than I would have expected! This series is not "my type of thing," I said before I started reading it. Knights have never really done a whole lot for me. They just don't feel like they have anything to do with our world, and so often seem to be founds in worlds with so little depth that they don't feel real to me.
A few months ago, a book club I am a part of read A Knight to Remember (which Date Knight is a sequel to), and Bridget Essex did such a great job with making the characters come alive to me that I had to know what would happen to them next. I also think that book's setting on our present-day Earth had a lot to do with keeping me invested.
Unlike that book, Date Knight is mostly not in present-day Earth. But because the characters are so wonderful, I was happy to enjoy the adventure. It even has me wondering whether I should enjoy the standalone books in this series.
I read the first book because of my book club; I read this one because of Holly and Virago. If I read the next one, it is because Bridget Essex wrote a series that I am enjoying, in spite of myself.
Another storm after a beautiful day means trouble. This storm opens a portal and brings another adventure in the form of three knights and Virago's queen. I did not like Holly's mental meanderings. I prefer to see her world through dialogue. But hey, I'm not a published author so who am I to question how a writer should tell her story? I enjoy reading about women knights who are chivalrous, cocky, lecherous, valiant, and questionably evil. I'm a veteran and understand the camaraderie between soldiers. It was good to read Virago's interaction with her friends. Their interaction was well written. It was the weekend so I could lounge and finish the book in the wee hours. I want to read the next one to find out what happened to Charaxas.
Good follow up to the first one picking up almost right where the first one left off. My only complaint is that everything takes place in a rather short amount of time. A bit more time between the first book and the second to give a bit more realistic feel to the relationship between Holly and Virago. Even a month between hen Virago came back until everyone shows up even make the passage of time between worlds a bit different. The story just seem a bit rushed and takes place in barley the span of 72 hours. I will most likely visit the other in the stories in the series as it is a fun series.
Not as captivating as the first story, a lot of unnecessary repetitive descriptions repeating the plot we already read two paragraphs ago, and a lot of whimsical scenes that kept forgetting items or reasons for concern in the main story, but I did enjoy this. A high-octane ending with a consequence that did make me sad! I will be buying the next book to follow the story of a prominent knight from this book...
This is a very well written tale with well developed characters and an engrossing storyline. Transported from Earth to another world is enough to shake up anyone. The new world is one of magic and magical creatures. Can a woman of Earth find happiness and true love, and make a life in this new world? Action packed and fast paced, I highly recommend this book be placed on your must-read list.
The foundation of the story seemed kind of weak to me. The knights and the queen came to get Virago because there someone is trying to assassinate the queen. However, not only does she bring along Holly and her dog, they do not make decisions or take action that conveys the danger and desperation that that would imply. That being said I enjoyed getting to see Agrotera from Holly's point of view and I love Kell. She is hilarious.
I am getting used to this writing style and I enjoy it more. Holly is living my fantasy. To go to another world and have adventures. I love the mix of romance and just enough heartache to make things bittersweet. The ending is only another beginning but I like that there isn't a cliffhanger.
A story of how a meek librarian saves a knight and the knights queen. Going thru a portal to someplace you only dreamed about and finding yourself on another planet is what fantasy stories are written about but this time it's for real! Enjoy!
GRIPPING !😍. TANTALIZING !😍. STIMULATING STIMULATING !😍. Definitely worth investing the time. Amazing how descriptive the telling of one world too the other. Be sure you read. A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER!😍. Before reading this book. They string together.
I loved the prequel to this book and loved this one just as much! Ass kicking ladies return again to save a ruler. the way the plot unfolds leaves you wanting more
Great storyline that held my interest right till the end. I will miss Holly and Virago. I loved learning about her city full of woman. Who wouldn't want to go there.
While I didn't fall as in love with it as I did the first book, I still really enjoyed Date Knight. It has the same charm and tone, with that positivity and happy romance everywhere that's refreshing compared to so many overly dramatic love stories.
Holly is still a relatable character whose sweetness and love for magical things is endearing. She says and thinks a lot of the same thing I would. Virago is as sexy as always. This time around, we get to spend more time with Virago's knights, and they're quite a lovable bunch. Kell stands out to me (because I have a soft spot for playful flirts with lighter personalities and a knack for getting into trouble) but I'd love to read more about the other knights in the future. I'm hoping Essex will focus in on Kell, personally.
The story for this book has higher stakes and more tension. There's been an assassination attempt on the queen and the knights are trying to get to the bottom of it while protecting her. It's set mostly in Agrotera, which is a treat to imagine (because it is the manifestation of lesbian wish-fulfilment). So yeah, dashing knights, magic, unicorns, a city full of women who love women... Look, it's a fantasy lesbian romance novel. I'm willing to suspend a lot to scratch this itch.
There are some things I could have had less of, however. The word "growl" and its variants, for example. It's used far too often (to the point of being annoying), and if you've read Essex's other books, you've probably just about had it with growling women from her. As a whole, the text would have benefited from a more thorough editing as I still ran into several typos, spelling, and grammatical errors.
From a story perspective, I would have enjoyed the book more if it had less public displays of affection, and just kissing in general. I know, I know, it's a romance novel, but there comes a point where it's too much (for me, at least). I mean, I get it, they're in love and they want to show it, but I don't want to see professions of love multiple times in every chapter, or kissing every few pages. It's far overused, stealing emotional weight for the moments that should be heavier, and I feel like I'm being bombarded with unnecessary fluff.
All that said, this is a light, fun book, and a good adventure - especially if you're interested in reading about lots of lesbians strong female characters! (Okay, seriously, though. Hot lesbian knights in a magical world in a city of lesbians!!!)
Holly would never in a million years have believed that the love of her life would hail from a far off world that she had only ever read and dreamed about. Being a librarian that is easy to do. What she doesn't realise is that she is at risk of losing Virago all over again.
After another freak storm the queen and her royal knights arrive on earth to inform Virago of an attempted assassination against the beloved queen of Agrotera. They want Virago to go back with them to help work out who is plotting to kill the queen and catch them before it's too late. So Virago, Holly and her much loved dog all travel back through the portal to see if they can thwart evil.
Bridget Essex is showing her absolutely fantastic writing style again here. Her attention to the intrinsic details makes the reader feel as if not only do you know these characters but that you are truly there with them. I love her dashes of humour spotted here and there throughout the novels that she writes and her love scenes are very well written. I found it so easy to get lost in the pages of this book and I believe that Bridget certainly has a grasp on this genre of writing. Her characters were so lively and well thought out and the landscape of Agrotera and Arktos City was crystal clear to anyone reading it. Bravo again Bridget.
I won't give spoilers but I will say this novel is outstanding and is woven with many fantasy elements, magic, adventures and love. The setting is beautiful, written with vivid details that brings you in the story. My favorite knight is Virago, an exotic strong confident woman. She needs to protect her lover, her queen and her country of Arktos. Her Arktos, a captivating magical world dominated by women, and the queen are under threat of being conquered by evil. But she doesn't have to do it alone. Along with her friends, a bunch of truly stunning knights, she goes into battle. There were so many moments that I had my heart in my throat, that I could feel the fear of Holly and of all the others. It's so well written you can easily picture everything in your mind. You'll find yourself immersed in the characters and you will fall in love with Holly. She is a warm, compassionate loving woman. The romance between Virago and Holly tugged at my heartstrings. This is what is called, true love. Date Knight is a fantastic novel that never disappointed. I highly recommend Date Knight and the first one, A Knight to remember.
I think I enjoyed this one slightly more than the first book of the Knight Legend series.. Except for the start, the start annoyed me.
Virago's Knight friends come through the portal with urgency because they need Virago as the Queen's life is in danger. But hell, they can relax enough to go and enjoy a night out on the town, really? So they go out to a lesbian bar, the knights get drunk and trouble ensues. What bothers me is that this storyline didn't really need to take place and at no point is it explained how these knights, from another world, get the money to pay for their drinks! Small I know, but it's plot holes like this that can get to me.
Still a nice quick read but the characters are still way too flat, the author really needs to work on character building, world building, and the overall plot. Like the first book, the plot had such potential but it fell short. However, I did enjoy the look into Virago's world.
Date Knight was a delightful follow-up to A Knight to Remember. Getting to see Holly confident and in love was wonderful. It seems like the next book breaks away from Holly to follow the fate of one of the side characters, and I'm starting to fall in love with the world in this book enough to eagerly look forward to reading the next one after diving into one or two other books. I'm also curious to check out some more of Essex's works too see if they're all first person present tense.
I loved it. The fantasy and romance. There’s things left to the imagination but I feel it’s the right things (ie- there’s not a ton of description of Holly- but you can still make the mental picture) and the action is wonderful. I recommend the book 100000%!!!
Awesome sequel. Has everything. Magic, heroes, baddies. Romance and blood verses evil. Of course the good guys win and the heroine gets the girl. But it's a great fun read. Maybe a third would be awesome would love to see calla happy with charades.
I really wish the author would write a full length novel with these characters and this setting. There's something incredibly unsatisfying about these stories, because they open up in the middle of something, and close without a proper conclusion.
Still, it was cool to go back to magical lesbian world, and to have a bit more plot.
