He let her make the rules…

NYC's most eligible bachelor, Brit Bencher, is also known as The Slayer for his reputation in the boardroom…and the bedroom. After juggling the demands of her career and the stress of caring for her ailing mother, Tori Anderson doesn't have time for relationships—but that doesn't mean she doesn't want to feel like a woman. I wrote my first book when I was in high school--a romance called "A Wild and Stormy Passion," which featured swordplay, kidnapping, a pirate heroine, and lots of naughty bits (that came entirely from my adolescent imagination!). Since then, I've written young adult novels and adult romances of the category, contemporary, and fantasy varieties. My books are romantic and sensual. I like strong women and strong men and the sparks that fly when they get together.

I am a dabbler and an emotional sponge. I can't read scary books or anything with an unhappy ending. I reserve the right to enjoy country music, puppies, true love, and happily ever after.

If you're perusing my Goodreads shelves, you should know I only review books I want to share the word about. If you ask me, life's too short to read something you don't enjoy.

I thought this book have some aspect of negotiation. Even though it is laced with romance. The more I listen to the audio book, I only get romance. But the romance is dry. I can not connect with the characters. The plot and the story is staying flat.

One-click and another stroke of luck. This contemporary romance by new-to-me author, Inara Scott, was a well-written story with two strong-willed and very likable characters. You can expect plenty of heat and sizzle, along with some really good sarcastic banter between these two.

Tori is an attractive, headstrong, tell-it-like-it-is heroine who believes in strong work ethics. She’s responsible for the expenses involved in caring for her ailing mother. It’s important that she succeeds in becoming a partner in the law firm where she works. She has built walls around her heart to save herself from the same kind of heartache her mother suffered when Tori’s dad left them. But she’s losing her mother and has no other family. Her friends all have their own families and Tori is lonely.

Brit is a very sexy, successful CEO of his own company, who is feeling the burnout in his career and the stresses of caring for his siblings. He’s had too many women and no lasting relationships. Brit may be ready for some rest and relaxation. It may be time to settle down and have a family of his own.

During a contract negotiation meeting involving Brit’s company, these two face-off against each other and the sparks fly! Can they come to an agreement and negotiate a happily-ever-after with each other?

Brit and Tori’s story made for a fun and enjoyable morning on the patio. Highly recommend to romance readers one and all.

When you’re offered the deal of a lifetime, smile. And never let it go.

I adored this book. The writing is powerful with a beautiful style that just kept the pages turning. I completely identified with the strength of the heroine, fell in love with the sexiness of the hero, and rooted for them the whole way through. Literally a perfect afternoon read - highly recommended!

It might be a tad spoiler-ish

I had quite some mixed feelings over this book. I felt a bit disappointed. I expected more. Way more. And though it wasn’t a bad read, it left me wanting for something else, some sort of deeper connection with the characters.

Tori Anderson is a twenty-something lawyer. She’s driven, determined and strong. She’s better known as a workaholic. Work is her life. And she’s also very untrusting when it comes to good looking, charming men. Having learned from her mother than any men with too much charisma was not to be trusted, Tori takes her advice to the heart. Brit Bencher is exactly the type that falls into that rule. Into Tori’s Rules of Negotiation.
Rule of Negotiation #1: Beware of sexy CEOs bearing favorable contracts.

Brit Bencher is… an asshole. Known as The Slayer, he takes down anything and everything in his path, especially women. His charming enough, but a little bit too arrogant for my taste. Okay, wait. He’s freaking egotistical. Annoyingly so. He’s set his mind on taking care of his family, and though there’s a noble reason, going over someone else in his haste to do so, is not fine in my book.

And here lays the reason I couldn’t really appreciate this book as much as I wanted. I was too annoyed with Brit. And that kind of blew the whole thing away. I’m not used to not liking the main male character, I usually fall head-over-heels with them instantly, but this didn’t happen with Brit. He’s too bigheaded and never really sees things as they are, more like he sees what he wants to see. I couldn’t get passed his ulterior motives to being with Tori, so I never got to like him much, if at all.

Then again, you never know…
Rule of Negotiation #2: Assume nothing.

As I read away, and started over thinking the whole thing, I worried I wouldn’t get into the story. I admit that through the first half of the book I couldn’t really connect with the characters. I had a hard time getting past Brit’s lies (reason for which I couldn’t give this book 4 stars), but at the same time I was proud of Tori for not falling immediately to his feet. She sure had a strong mind, it’s not easy to pass up an opportunity like the one she had… spend the night with NYC’s most eligible bachelor. Annoyingly arrogant or not, the man knew his game.

Yet she stood her ground. But when faced with the opportunity again…
Rule of Negotiation #3: When in doubt, attack.

I will leave that to your own interpretation. It’s not like I want to spoil the whole thing, after all.
I was past half of the book, maybe rounding the sixty percent, when things started hitting off, with me and the book I mean. With Tori and Brit, well, they had already hit it off, so to speak. But I feared what was to come, because if I admitted it to myself I already knew what it was, and I was scared, for Tori’s sake.
Rule of Negotiation #4: A good attorney is always prepared.

This was the moment when I actually felt a connection with the characters, I could feel their emotions. Tori’s anger and hurt. I really felt for her. I was on her side since the very start, so when she got the news I couldn’t really blame her for lashing out, now could I? She had every right in the world. And for Brit to act so innocently, god! You would think he didn’t have any sense of guilt, or he was damn good at suppressing it.
Rule of Negotiation #5: Never let them see you sweat.

Once again, Tori shows us how strong she really is. I admire her. She’s the kind of strong character I like. Even though I don’t exactly approve of her methods. To avoid thinking about Brit she buries herself in work, more work.

I must admit though, that even though I was really annoyed with Brit, and I realize this now, I loved the ending. They both had some serious issues to overcome before they could be together. Brit’s need to take over the family when it wasn’t really his place; he tried to solve everyone else’s problems, but he couldn’t even see his own. And Tori’s trusting issues, she was hiding away in a pile of papers, refusing to see what was right in front of her in fear she would get hurt, like her mother had.

But Brit wasn’t like her father –not in the end –and she was nothing like her mother. She was strong, and he (even though still a bit of an arrogant asshole) was sweet and caring and sexy as hell.

As an overall conclusion, and I just changed my mind here after giving it a though, Rules of Negotiation was a pretty good book. A nice, easy read. Oh! And I was totally forgetting… it was rather hot at times. Really hot at times.
Rule of Negotiation #6: When you’re offered the deal of a lifetime, smile. And never let it go.

First of all, I have to say I've always been a fan of romance novels if they're well written. I consider well written to mean they have a plot and characters who are more than skin deep and maybe some dialogue to go along with the all the naughty scenes. I am so happy to report that Inara Scott's Rules of Negotiation fits all these criteria. The story is sweet and funny while still being sexy, the characters are well developed and likable and the plot moves steadily, pulling you along for the ride.

This book draws you in from the very beginning and you are rooting for the characters and their happy ever after before long. I laughed, cried and sighed as the story went on. My husband laughed at me but I don't care, I'm used to it. :) The story is told from the third person perspective and it's really fun to see both sides as the couple struggles with their unexpected feelings for one another.

Inara Scott is such a talented voice in the romance genre. Her ability to tell a compelling story really translates into any genre she tries her hand at. I cannot wait to read her next endeavor.

If I had to use a few words to sum up Inara Scott's debut category romance, they would be 'category romance with substance.'

Inara pens a gorgeous, sexy hero in Brit, a hero with flaws who isn't afraid to admit them when it counts.

And the heroine Tori is a feisty, upfront heroine who I loved for her forthrightness, her confidence in her work and her vulnerability in her personal life.

Together, these two strong willed characters equal fireworks!

I laughed out loud at several one liners in this book, one of my favourites an example of Tori's forthrightness: she's mad at Brit, he asks if she's upset for a particular reason, her response:
"No, I'm upset because you're an asshole."

I love an honest heroine and Tori is all that and more.

A highly enjoyable read.

I feel so accomplish lately, I have been able to get to read some great books lately. So, todays selection is Rules of Negotiation by Inara Scott. Let me tell you this book was fun. Here is what the story is about:

We have a workaholic lawyer by the name of Tori Anderson, who has six rules she follows when she negotiates which are:

1. Beware of sexy CEOs bearing favorable contracts (I have to agree with that one)
2. Assume nothing (good advice)
3. When in doubt attack
4. A good attorney is always prepare (kinda like the Boy Scouts motto)
5. Never let them see you sweat
6. When you're offered the deal of a lifetime, smile

All those are very good rules to follow, somehow they get thrown out the window when she comes across Brit Bencher. Now he's a guy who is oozing of charm and sex appeal, who wouldn't swoon over that. Plus, they don't call him The Slayer for nothing.

Brit did some research on Tori and found out that she represents a very important person, Garth Solen. Which would be fabulous if he could get his sister Melissa a job working at Solen Labs. All he needs is Tori's help. However, he goes about it the wrong way.

Now the question are: will Brit be able to fix the blunder or will he not get a chance? Can his charm save the day or is he just out of luck there?

My thoughts: Loved it! I mean first off you gotta love when the hero has a nickname, especially when it's "The Slayer." That's just fabulous! Second of you have to appreciate a strong will women who isn't so easily charm by a handsome devil of a man and is willing to stand her ground. However, that could be a disadvantage at the same time. However, you come to understand why Tori has built up these walls. Life can be pretty jacked up, but its how you handle them that will make or break you. So, I hope you get a chance to check out this book, because it's a lot of fun. You know you want to read about a guy with the nickname of "The Slayer."

So, see ya next time and happy reading.

I'm mixed between two-three stars {the book was okay-to good}. Most of the book was okay, but the end was good - it was cute. I wish the book was longer because everything happened so fast. I didn't think the "big drama" of the book was all that big so I kept thinking there was more but there wasn't. I thought the characters were really one dimensional. I didn't know them at all.

Brit tries to use Tori to get a phone number to help his sister get a job. Only during the time of trying to "use" her {if you can even call it that} he falls in love with her. Tori is smart and puts two and two together and gets SUPER mad {seriously, it's not THAT big of a deal}. She "breaks" up with him until they obviously get back together in the end.

Tori is a workaholic and has zero personality aside from work, work, work. I LOVED the airport scene at the end, that made the book for me. I think I would feel completely differently if maybe I got to know BOTH of the main characters more aside from her being a crazy workaholic and him, well, I don't even really know him aside from him thinking he needed to raise his family even though both of his parents are still alive.

I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. It's a really short book. I found it because it was being compared to 50 Shades but it was really nothing like that.

I enjoyed the dynamics of the characters in this story. Brit and Tori are both portrayed as human with successes and imperfections. Neither was super defensive but they were cautious. They viewed most things realistically. I liked how the attraction was not an instant love at first sight, flash of lightening kind of feeling but was more a slower drawing together as they learned things about each other through conversation and spending time together. Brit learns many things about his relationship with his family, his attitude about business and also what success and happiness really mean. Tori realizes that you need to live your life for yourself and that letting other people determine what makes you happy is a huge mistake. They begin to look at where they are in life and also revisit old dreams and desires. What do you do when the life you are living isn’t the life that makes you happy? Reading this made me think about what dreams I may want to resurrect and also who I am trying to make happy. Is it me or am I doing what I think is expected of me?

This is an author I will definitely be reading again.

Favorite Quote: “These breasts?” He looked at them, incredulous. “These breasts could never be in the way. Shame on you for suggesting such a thing. Now this thong, on the other hand…” He motioned toward it with a mocking grin. “This thong is absolutely unnecessary.”

3.5 stars...this contemporary romance has a tightly-wound attorney, Tori, and an overly controlling businessman, Brit Bencher (AKA The Slayer), bumping heads (and other parts of their bodies).

As the lead negotiator on a business deal, Tori meets Brit, the man who is buying a friend's business. Not only does he get the business, he discovers he wants Tori, too. Sparks fly between them, but can Tori let him in? Or do the lessons of the past, taught by her dying mother, prevent her from giving in to her emotions? Will she choose her career over the possibility of a relationship? Is making partner more important than love? Ultimately, will her rules of negotiation rule her life?

As for Brit, will he change his controlling ways, especially for his family? Can he give up the models, the actresses for Tori?

“Is there any chance we can forget that night ever happened?” – Tori
“If only I could, but you said, and I quote, ‘Maybe another time’. Those words haunt me, Tori, They haunt me.” - Brit

Lord, save me from the CEO trying to play lawyer” – Tori

Hot shot playboy meets the over-achiever lawyer, when the two collides for a company deal and discovers a link to help his sister in revenge for her ex-boyfriend, Tori is too smart to think that the “slayer” Brit would want him because she is not an actress or a model, but it an unexpected twist love unfolds between the two of them and they realize it when its too late.

After reading a lot of romance novels, all I can say is one thing – Passionate sex eventually leads into emotional attachment (this is sooo true after reading so much romance novels, it all ends up the same but its still worth the read and effort) But the story is nice and dramatic .

Tori Anderson had big plans to race up the corporate ladder on her way to a partnership with her prestigious law firm. She was determined to not let anyone get too close to her so she wouldn't suffer the same heartbreak that plagued her ailing mother. When she meets Brit Bencher, CEO of Excorp, during a contract negotiation for one of her clients, all that begins to change. Brit is handsome, charming and confident, with the reputation of being able to have any woman with just a wink or a smile. He suddenly shows more than a professional interest in Tori that leaves her wondering if there is more to him than just being a playboy. Can she let down her emotional walls for the possibility of love or is Brit just playing her as part of the contract negotiations?

I loved this story. Tori was such a great character, that was so strong and seemed to have everything under control. She had a successful career as an attorney and was able to take care of her ailing mother. The only thing that she was missing was love. When Brit presented the opportunity for a romantic fling, I'm so glad that she took a chance because even though she didn't want to admit it, she was lonely. She realized that all her friends had loved ones and families while she just had a cat. Brit, on the other hand, was so used to micromanaging everyone in his life including his siblings. Tori made him want more out of his own life instead of trying to run everyone else's. This was a delightful romantic story that makes you believe in taking chances on love and that everyone can find their happy ending.

Rules of Negotiation by Inara Scott was such a great read! I read almost straight through it - I didn't want to put it down! The story was so easy to get caught up in and the characters were awesome.

I really loved the characters of Rules of Negotiation. Tori was such an easy character to relate to. I also just loved Betsy - she was too funny! Brit was character that you really couldn't help but to fall for. Both Brit and Tori had their flaws, and they just fit together perfectly to work through them.

The chemistry between Tori and Brit just leaped off the page. There were some hot scenes between them, but there were also quite a few scenes that were just absolutely adorable. Any scene with Betsy were easily some of my favorites of the book.

I am really eager to read more romance from Inara Scott! Rules of Negotiation was just an absolute gem, and I loved it!

I'm on page 23 of this book and it is currently interesting. I'm definitely into it. Stay tuned for a better review later today. Until then lovely book readers. Enjoy!

Wow I loved it. I think it could have been better but that's besides the point. I really loved how Brit pursued Tori even though his motives were off but he did it for his sister.

There is another book after this one but it has to do with his sister, Melissa, and Solen. It's called The Boss's Fake Fiance. I think it should be good. Anywho over all I did enjoy reading this book. Until then lovely book readers. Enjoy

I loved this book. I was surprised. I'm glad to find a new author. I loved that it was angsty and there was enough romance. And I really loved Brit and Tori. They were really good together. I was a bit disappointed with the ending, but then I saw that there was a sequel, so I hope we get to see Brit and Tori in the sequel and learn what happened after their book. I'm a sucker for epilogues or learning more about them after their happy ever after. Going to read the the next book now.

“You just figured this out about me? Brit, I do what I have to do to make partner. That’s all. That’s what I’m living for.”
“But that makes no sense!” He pushed off the counter and stalked toward her. “You are a beautiful, intelligent, vibrant woman. Why do you punish yourself this way?”
“You may not know this,” Tori retorted, “but some of us need our jobs. Some of us need to know that when the bill comes from the nursing home, they’ll have the money to pay it.”
“I get that, I do.” Brit ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. “I don’t get the way you do it. You treat everything that’s not work like it’s an annoyance. A distraction from what really matters.”

“No. It won’t. But I sure as hell can make sure I don’t repeat her mistakes.”
“Ah. I see.” Brit dropped his hand. “You’re determined to cast yourself as your mother, and me as your father. You refuse to accept the possibility that maybe there’s a man out there who’s worth taking a chance on. And yes, I know I didn’t exactly start out the right way, but things have changed. At least, they have for me.”
Tori’s throat caught. “What changed?”
“I don’t want you for a month, Tori. I thought that would be enough but it isn’t. I want more. I want to rub your shoulders as you fall asleep. I want to cook you breakfast in the morning. I want you to come away with me because you can see that work isn’t the most important thing in the world.”
Her mother’s voice echoed in Tori’s head. Before you trust a man, Tori, ask yourself, Where will you be if he leaves you? How will you keep going after he’s gone?
“I’m sorry,” she said. “Work is the most important thing to me. I can’t afford to take this weekend off. Not for anyone.”
He threw up his hands in frustration. “So that’s it? You’re ready to give it all up for a weekend in the office?”
“Give what up? Give up a short-term affair with a man who is running away from his own life and trying to reclaim his lost youth? Sorry if that doesn’t sound more promising than a lifelong career.” Tori knew she was lashing out at him, perhaps unfairly, but it seemed vitally important that he stop looking at her with those solemn, sad eyes. He needed to feel a little of the heartbreak that was enveloping her.
“I screwed up a lot of things in my life, Tori. I worked too hard for too long. I tried to order around my family like they were a bunch of unruly kids. I’m lucky they didn’t disown me. But I’m ready to start over. You’re determined to stay here in this empty, hollow house, running in your hamster wheel, terrified to let anyone into your life. Who’s running away? Me, or you?”
“You knew what I had to offer,” Tori said, closing her mind to any further attacks. “We said one month, no commitments. I kept my end of the bargain.”
“Well, I didn’t.” Brit looked around the room, and Tori could feel him cataloging the dust on the appliances, and the stack of dishes in the sink. “I wasn’t ready to walk away from you. That’s why I asked you to come to Scotland. But now I wonder if maybe I was wrong. Maybe you don’t want to start over. Maybe I should walk away.”
“Please, go right ahead,” Tori said, her heart breaking in tiny, tingling pieces. “It isn’t as though I wasn’t expecting it.”
“If I leave, I’m not coming back,” Brit warned, his dark brows pulled together, his eyes boring into her as if they could see into her very soul. “You say I’m trying to reclaim my lost youth, and maybe that’s true. I wasn’t happy with the life I was living, and I’m starting something new. I want you to come with me, but I understand if that’s not possible.”
Tori’s entire body felt as if it had become a single, open wound. She stifled a cry of pain. “You’re not playing fair. You’ve got a perfect family, and a job, and money, and it’s all waiting for you when you come back.” She slammed down her cup on the counter, her entire body trembling with restrained emotion. “You’ve got everything to come back to and I’ve got nothing, Brit. Nothing but Goddamn Karl Bulcher!”
Brit paused. “You’re right. You’re absolutely right.”
Tori blinked. “What? You mean…”
“I mean, I can’t ask you to give that up.” He strode forward and pulled her into a quick embrace. “You need to get some sleep. I’ll stay at a hotel tonight. You won’t hear from me again. I hope things work out for you, Tori. I really do.”
Then, as quickly as he had come, Brit turned around and left.

Tori’s scars went far deeper than he’d imagined. It would take a bulldozer to get her away from her job.
He forced himself to keep driving, even though every muscle in his body screamed at him to turn around. He was done trying to fix people. He had reached out to her and she’d pushed him away. He had to move on. It wasn’t as if they were married. They weren’t even dating, according to Tori. He’d tried to change the boundaries of their relationship—if one could even call it that—and she’d said no.
End of story.

Without missing a beat he dropped onto one knee. “Tori Anderson, love of my life, I have no ring to slip on your finger. I have no job and a lousy apartment that feels like a movie set. The only thing I have to offer is my heart and my love. Will you accept?”
A fresh wave of tears welled up in her eyes. “Oh yes. Yes!”
He jumped to his feet and kissed her with all the passion and love she never thought she’d have. The tears slid down her cheeks, healing her, making her whole.
“We will create something new together,” he said. “Just the two of us.”
She nodded and held him close. Tori’s Rules of Negotiation Number Six: When you’re offered the deal of a lifetime, smile. And never let it go.

So am guessing there is no middle grown?! She quits her job? No support from him? He has a full life, family, job and money… she has mmmm her work so yeah instead of getting help or finding a middle grown in her work she just let go of it all just like that.
He took advantage of her at first and she just takes him back? Seriously.
Am sorry I listen to the audiobook till the end but I hate it I really did, I had read the reviews beforehand thinking it was worth it but for me it was a total waste of my time. I love romance but the guy was worthless and she was in serious need of self-esteem little self love and a understanding of how to balance work and life.
Am really sorry I don’t normally have so bad opinions but the book just cross me the wrong way.

Really sweet, but a lot of heartache to go through to get to the HEA

Loved the complexity of the characters but sometimes personally it's hard for me to read so much angst without enough payoff... and I wish the relationship had been more fleshed out... this could definitely been a much longer book but it was a good short read.

The story revolves around Tory who is fobic for her own fears and has made rules on her mothers saying. The story lacks punch that makes you feel for Brit or Tori. Its not a romantic story but a story of a fool lady who is in her own world
