Building on the foundation established with the first book in the series, Framed Perspective 2 guides artists through the challenging tasks of projecting shadows in proper perspective on a variety of environments and working with characters in perspective set in particular situation or setting. Author and artist Marcos Mateu-Mestre reveals the many techniques and mechanics he has used to become proficient in such endeavors, including using anatomy, shadows, and clothing folds to define the shape and volume of characters within an environment. He also shares how to effectively observe a model or object to extract the right amount of information to then translate it into an impactful graphic and visual image, the goal of every visual storyteller.
Great book! Technical, but more consumable than its predecessor, Framed Perspective.
It builds off of concepts discussed in prior books by the author, so having a knowledge of those make the read more fulfilling, but overall still great!
I cannot love the Framed series of art books by Marcos Mateau-Mestre enough! The artist is a true master of understanding the fundamentals of visual art and has created a clear and concise volume to help those learning understand various aspects of drawing. For those that struggle with linear perspective and the figure this volume will become a treasured asset in the studio library.
Just as good as vol. 1, with an emphasis on pragmatics. I think beginners would struggle with this one (many of his tips assume TONS of background experience, such as life drawing and knowledge of anatomy), but for intermediate skill it’s a great resource. And I like the bonus analysis of his own process of working from reference photos at the end, which is something the original Framed lacked. Speaking of, I would have loved more examples of how to draw shadow from funky angles and perspectives, BUT there is enough here to level up your work so shadows are less guesswork.
If you want to bring realism using shadows, organic forms, and dynamic poses in perspective, this is the book for you (after Framed Perspective, vol. 1, of course).
