There are few greater jewels to be found in Christian literature than the words of Spurgeon on the subject of Joy. Delighting in the Sunlit Uplands of Grace brings together C. H. Spurgeon’s teachings on joy. Spurgeon speaks of the true, life–changing joy found in Christ, fellowship with His people and the joy that is to come for all whose trust in Him.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.
I left this book with more hope, joy, and peace in Jesus. Spurgeon’s wisdom and truth on joy has been relevant in much of my conversations and many of his one line zingers have been passed on to friends and family. “Joy in the Lord is the cure for all discord and anxiety.”
The old timey language was a bit hard/slow to read, but I also liked how a few things were phrased. Some parts were unintentionally so funny. 4.5 stars.
This packs a punch as only Spurgeon can. Pithy, upbeat and pastoral, this will put the wind in your sails. One of my favourite quotes from it is "Joy in the Lord is the cure for all discord." p 12. Plaudits must go to Rev. Dr. Malcolm Maclean of Christian Focus for compiling these six sermons into one volume.
