REAL WORLD JOURNALISM

Anthony Haywards "filmography" is a fantastic companion piece to John Pilgers film-making and writing.

Pilgers output is arranged thematically by either Country or Issue. His output is put into context, there is an account of the process of making the film, the not infrequent to and fro-ing between Pilger and his commissioning editors, an account of the reception of the film from the public and press and the accompanying controversy. The difference in reception between Press and Public is often one of stark contrast especially when it is the right wing press thats involved. For example The Daily Telegraph seems to run and endless vendeta against Pilger.

I had no idea of the volume of John Pilgers output being young enough (and not all that young either) to remember his output from the early 90s onwards so it was a fascinating book that gave me the desire to get hold of the DVD's of his film journalism - money permitting.

After reading the book my admiration for Pilger was at an all time high - his tenacity and his consistent habit of returning to some of his subjects years later make his work a real education in the affairs of the world today. It is not all doom and gloom either - some of Pilgers campaigning journalism achieved real changes for the people involved.

Well reccomended - an excellent companion to his prolific film output - long may it continue.
