Ragamuffin Prayers is a new collection of honest and searching personal thoughts on prayer by some of Christian musics most reflective artists and authors. Readers will be encouraged in their own prayer journeys by the Ragamuffin Band, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Brennan Manning, Kevin Smith of DC Talk, and other popular musicians and writers as they share insights on prayer and how God uses our weaknesses and imperfections to accomplish His will.
This beautifully designed book, a complement to the album of the same name, is enriched by the stunning photograph of Ragamuffin Band member Jimmy. Whether given as a gift or kept as a personal treasure, Ragamuffin Prayers is sure to lead readers further along the pathway to the heart of God.
The Ragamuffin Band, the backup band of late singer/songwriter Rich Mullins, recorded a collection of Rich's songs under the title of The Jesus Record with guest vocalists Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Phil Keaggy, and others. This record has sold 240,000 copies in less than a year. Since then, the Ragamuffins, with special guests, have toured widely.
This book was published 14 years ago and I cherished it in my post-collegiate, early 20s. I decided to re-read this collection of essays on prayer for inspiration as I wrap up my unit on grappling with prayer in my Sunday school class. I don’t know if I’ll use any of the book this Sunday, but I was blessed by perusing the pages once again after many years. My favorite contributions were from Steve Stockman and Billy Sprague, and the reprint of the lyrics to Rich Mullins’ song “Hard to Get” in his own handwriting is poignant and compelling. Nobody wrote songs like Rich.
Weak, disorganized compilation. Riding coattails of my favorite spiritual book, The Ragamuffin Gospel, so the falling short irritated me. Different author.
Ragamuffin prayers is an excellent book, especially for those who have always struggled with either being constant in prayer or fearing their prayers fall on deaf ears. It's a glimpse into the true nature of Christ's grace for broken people. This really spoke to my heart and was a comfort to know that a prayer doesn't need to be perfect, just honest. :)
