I received a copy of Awaken from the author to review. This is the first time an author has sent me their book to review.

I thought Sophia was pretty cool and loved the sound of her rainbow hair. She’s been thrust into a situation she really hasn’t been prepared for at all and instead of crumbling under the weight on her shoulders she decides to try to do her best. She definitely has moments of doubt but doesn’t let them stop her from trying to do good. I was also glad to see that she wasn’t going to let these angels push her around and fought for the things that were important to her.

Like her best friend Jasmine. Wow is she a handful but so funny at the same time. I think Jasmine and Sophia were competing for favourite character for me. I’m not really sure who like more. I like them both. Then there was Jasmine’s brother Ben. I had this weird feeling about him at the start of the book when he was running an errand but I thought I was jumping to random conclusions but I couldn’t believe that I was right. I don’t know how I figured it out but I did and then I thought I was crazy so when it was revealed at the end I was like “whaaaaat?!”

The ending of Awaken was really good. Like I said I didn’t see it coming but at the same time I did. I think I talked myself out of it earlier in the book because I thought I was crazy. It will make the sequel, Surrender (I think), very interesting. I’m not sure when the sequel will be out.

There were a couple of things that annoyed me but I think that may have been because I left the book at a friends house and didn’t get it back for a little over a week. Obviously I had to stop reading it and I’m not sure if that’s why the explanations that the angels gave Sophia felt drawn out, they didn’t tell her everything straight away and if that was me I think the not knowing and being expected to just go along with everything would drive me crazy. I don’t know how she did it. Again, I’m not sure if it was because I couldn’t read the book for a while or it was drawn out through the story anyway.

I think this is Thomas’s debut novel (please don’t quote me on that) and if it is it was really good. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Sophia in the sequel. The ending of Awaken was sooo good that I wanted the next book straight away.

If you haven’t heard of Awaken I definitely recommend looking it up.

Awaken is the debut novel from Australian author, G R Thomas. It's a heady mix of history, mythology and biblical references along with the creation of an entirely new fantasy realm for us to dwell in. That's a tough call for any author to pull off but Thomas does this beautifully. The main character, Sophia Woodville, is a likeable protagonist, who is thrown into a new life that she never dreamt existed. We see her struggle with her new found status, never losing her sense of morality or love for her family.

The supporting characters were all very well developed, with their owns needs and back story. I really liked Nik'ael and Koi, and I loved the scenes set in England as I know each place very well. One of my favourite parts was the underground sanctuary, which was extremely visual and compelling.

The plot twist at the end was a real 'why did I not see this coming!' moment.

I had to put this down for a while due to my own editing deadline, but I devoured the last 150 pages very quickly. A captivating debut novel, Ms Thomas, well done.

This is not a genre I usually read - in fact, I'd have to say this is my first urban fantasy/dystopian book I've read. And I wasn't disappointed. The author wrote an engaging, descriptive world that I felt drawn into. I was left totally amazed at how she was able to create an entirely new world complete with language and people and be able to blend it so seamlessly with the modern day. Well done GR Thomas!

I first discovered this book on Sarina Langer’s blog. Her praise assured me that I had to read it! And I am extremely glad that I have!

Sophia Woodhouse is a young nurse with a unique mark on her face and a special talent for healing. But she is an ordinary girl by all other means, working during the day and spending time with friends at night. The normalcy of her life is swiftly ended when a coworker is attacked and Sophia learns that someone is after her and has been watching her for some time.

A classic yarn about a girl who discovers abilities she never knew she had, there is nothing contrived about this story. What sets it most apart is the impeccable world building. Thomas excels at envisioning a new mythos for the world, reinterpreting the stories of the Bible, the concepts of angels and Watchers and making it completely her own. She does it so convincingly and with such beautiful language and draws the reader into her world without confusing or overwhelming with her descriptions. History bends at her will and the deftness of it is astounding!

The characters too are well drawn and elicit sympathy and laughter. Sophia is a strong protagonist who is reluctant to accept her true origins and the role she is to play. Her mentors are at once compassionate creatures, but also firm hands that know the importance of their mission. Then there are her friends from her old life, her ties to who she was, to keep her grounded. And then there’s Nik’ael, who’s past and present create a conflicted character with ambiguous plans.

And then there’s that ending! A cliffhanger that leaves you wishing for the next book. Fortunately, it’s already out, so the wait won’t be a long one!

G.R. Thomas has crafted a stunning debut with an unforgettable cast of characters and a unique plot. A well woven narrative, full of heart, written with rich, flowing language that pulls you in.

Awaken is the debut novel of Australian author GR Thomas. I give it 5 stars. I highly recommend this book.

GR Thomas’s writing is concise and filled with energy.

Sophia Woodville is a young a nurse who thinks she has an ordinary life until she is catapulted into an amazing existence she could have never imagined. She is an engaging protagonist and I was immediately drawn in to her story.

I love how GR Thomas entwines biblical and historical links throughout the story, while creating a new mythology for Sophia to dwell in.

All the characters are well-developed and believable, and with good back stories of their own.

The twist at the end is fantastic and I didn't see it coming.

I'm looking forward to reading Surrender , the second book in the series that has not long been released.

Well done, GR Thomas.

This book definitely has a lot of religious and mythical subtext, but Thomas has taken these elements and worked them into a unique, fantasy story of angels, satans, and higher beings. Don't worry if you shy away from books with religious tones, as this is definitely a fantasy. However, Sophia's story really does make you question what is out there.

There is a wealth of interesting characters and beings, and the world building is well researched and woven into the narrative. Sophia is a relatable character, thrust into a strange world where she is of most importance. A few times, I did question Sophia's naivety and the way she didn't want to hear the truth at first. I guess that's because I'm the opposite character and wouldn't be satisfied until I knew everything and anything of relevance as soon as the need arose.

The book felt very lengthy and this is partly down to the slow pace at the beginning laced with lots of info dumps, but once you are into the story, the narrative flows faster and the action picks up.

Well, there you have it. This book is AMAZING! Okay, there were a few slow spots here and there, along with a little too much description, but overall this is an excellent piece of work.

I loved Sophia and her rainbow hair. The author did a great job of creating a well-rounded protagonist, who is easy to fall in love with. My absolute favorite character was Jaz, Sophia's best friend. I have a few friends who have mixes of Jaz's personality and they are the best! No fear to tell the world what is on her mind! Love it!

I was not expecting the ending. I had my ideas and I was nearly convinced I had it figured out, until the author threw me for a loop. Brilliant ending and I can't wait to dive into her next book, Surrender! I highly recommend reading this engrossing fantasy book.

4 out of 5 stars for Awaken by G.R. Thomas
Awaken is the debut novel for writer G.R. Thomas as well as the first in what promises to be an incredibly engaging urban fantasy series.
Sophia Woodville has always known she was different. A nursing student with rainbow hair and the extraordinary ability to heal others, Sophia just wants to live a semi quiet life. The polar opposite from her best friend Jasmine who is a ball of energy! Jasmine and her brother Ben have been there for Sophia for a long time. They consider each other family along with Sophia’s grandmother Nan. One day, in the blink of an eye, Sophia’s so called quiet existence ends. Everyone she loves is in jeopardy. Those she thought she trusted have been lying to her and she’s no longer sure who to rely and the only one who can fix it is her.
Thomas’ beautifully expressive writing makes it easy to feel you’re a part of this world she created and lose yourself inside without bogging us as readers down with paragraph after paragraph of descriptive information. Thomas wastes no time getting right to the good stuff, almost immediately we are plunged into the action. Once I began this book it was hard to put it down, too excited to see what was coming next and the surprises continually being thrown my way. The plot twists in this book were exhilarating and constantly had me saying “WHAT?! No Way.” While this is not a religious book by any means it does make references to some well known biblical and mythological figures. The seamless melding of the two was interesting and something that I personally haven’t read before. There were some minor spelling and grammatical errors but in no way was enough to detract from the story. Awaken ends on a cliffhanger and I am chomping at the bit to see how the rest of this story plays out and where Sophia’s quest will take her.

Awaken by G.R. Thomas is a four-star read. It starts with a great quote from an even greater writer “Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night. This quote explains the premise of this book.
Awaken is the first book in this series Surrender is the next book.
The main character Sophia Woodvile is a 20-year-old nursing grad, she thinks she leads a pretty ordinary life, apart from her hair, she has rainbow hair which comes in handy when working paediatric patients, or patients who have been raving and are coming down, who can be scared of a shot coming from an angel with rainbow hair? Sophia lives with her Nan, and they share and appreciation of tea, her best friend is also a nursing grad student, who is also an adrenalin junkie, Jasmin Armitage they have been best friends for years despite their differences, the two of them and Jasmin’s brother Ben.
Sophia’s lie changes one night after being pushed by Jasmin into going out for a night out after their first day in the emergency department, Sophia invites Cael along a friend from work who keeps a close eye on her all night, coming to her aid after she sees a face in the crowd of a man who attacked her on her previous night out. He takes her home and rescues her and without her realising he starts a chain reaction in her that will change her life and the lives of those around her forever. Revealing some secrets that some people were not ready to reveal.
G.R. Thomas writes in a very descriptive manner, writing about one time and then another with great fluidity. The passion and depth that she writes with are great.

Awaken is an engaging YA urban fantasy. It’s set in the world we know, but alongside our familiar existence, and hidden from most humans, is a whole parallel civilization of angels and demons. I enjoyed this juxtaposition of recognizable places (in both Australia and England) with a hidden world of fantastical beings. Thomas impressively combines the various elements of her story - modern life, medieval/Tudor history, biblical and mythological references - seamlessly.
The protagonist, Sophia Woodville, is a 20 year old student nurse who lives an ordinary existence in the Dandenongs near Melbourne. Apart from an unusual ability to heal others, she believes there’s nothing special about her. So when she’s suddenly plunged into an unknown and terrifying world and discovers she’s anything but ordinary, she rebels at first at the idea that she’s some kind of savior with superpowers born to fulfill an ancient prophecy. I found her a feisty, appealing character and particularly liked her strong ethics, her determination to do the right thing and to protect those she loves.
Another of the book’s aspects I enjoyed was its glimpse into English history. The Wars of the Roses is my favourite period in history, so it was fun to discover the identity of Sophia’s father and grandmother. And I liked the plot twist at the end - that was rather a wow moment!
The book would benefit by having a few grammatical errors and odd Americanisms weeded out, but overall it’s an exciting and imaginative story that kept me turning the pages.

This book told such a magical and tragic story, blending the past with the present in such a way that actually makes you think..., is this real?

The way that Thomas intertwined history with fantasy was a real treat to get caught up in. I was really impressed with the way the biblical elements were executed in this story. From the names to the descriptions, everything was well put together and beautifully written.

Too many times throughout this book, my heart ached for Sophia. Geez, that poor girl could not catch a break! Every time she was somewhat standing back on her feet, something came along and shot the girl down. She was a character that I really enjoyed, her thought process truly took you with her and made you feel like you were right there, living in her moments of glory and pain.

The only issue I had was finding it a little hard to grasp who was leading in certain chapters. The other POVs introduced were a little confusing, but not enough to take away from the story.

Apart from that I'd definitely recommend this book! The pacing was great and the story and writing kept me furiously turning the pages to see what the hell was going to happen next.

ANNNNND THAT ENDING! Gugghhh! Too many feels!

Awaken by GR Thomas is the first book in the series and is also her debut novel as well. It's the first book I've read from this author and it was so good! The fantasy aspect is so captivating that I couldn't put the book down!

Sophia has been sheltered from the world she lives in by her Nan. Living with only her for the past 20 years, it was easy for Nan to keep it that way. Starting her job as a nurse gives her a great sense of satisfaction with being a healer. One day, it all changes for her. While at the hospital, her truth is revealed, and everything as she once knew is now different. A world full of Demons, Angels, and mythical creatures are revealed. Sophia doesn't know who to trust and who is just after her power. With the help of her Nan, Sophia tries to navigate her new path all while protecting the people she loves. Will she be able to is the question and you'll just have to read it to find out!

All I can say is WOW!!! The ending is so twisted that you can't help but want more! Ms. Thomas’ writing captures your attention and holds it to the very end. The character development is evident throughout and the storyline is amazing. I cannot wait to see what the author makes of the second book in the series!

'Awaken' combines the essential elements of the new adult genre and intertwines it with world history events, making it an enjoyable and compelling read. I thought I'd had my fill of YA "girl-finds-out-she-has-super-powers" books. I thought wrong. Awaken is a well written and cleverly constructed read, introducing us to Sophia Woodville on the cusp of her 21st birthday when her nicely ordered and normal life is turned upside down. Sophia discovers she is in fact an angel, and not just any old angel, but the chosen one, the angel whose destiny is to lead the colony of angels abandoned on Earth back to their homeland.

Being such a ordinary girl, this comes as something of a shock to Sophia, but she has barely anytime to come to grips with her new status, before she (and us, the reader) are thrown headfirst into conflict with demons who will stop at nothing to prevent her achieving her destiny. A global pursuit ensues, with tragedy dogging her footsteps as people Sophia cares for become victims and Sophia has to learn, and learn fast, how to use her powers to protect herself and her friends and family.

During Sophia's lessons, we too learn the history of the angel colony on earth, and this I particularly liked, as the author has cleverly created an entire culture with customs, traditions and hierarchy, a culture that has co-existed with humanity for centuries, with us humans being blissfully unaware of their existence.

I don't want to give any spoilers, but there is an historical twist in the tale which helps to explain Sophia Woodville's birthright and why she is so important. As a historical buff myself, I had wondered about Sophia's significance to a particular point in England's history, but the reveal was still a surprise.

The character of Sophia, despite her angelic background, is still very human, grounded in everyday 21st century life. Even after her transformation she remains true to her human upbringing, and I liked the fact the author didn't make her too precocious simply because she is the chosen one.

Then there's the character of Nik'ael. Originally a good guy, he is seduced over to the dark side after the massacre of his village, yet his is a very conflicted personality, his growing awareness and empathy for Sophia and her friends, leading me to believe (hope) that Nik'ael will see the error of his ways and change sides. In Awaken, the first book in the series, he lurks in the shadows, more an observer than a participant, but I feel the author has plans for him and that in the second book he will take a more active role in the plot, and I look forward to his meeting with Sophia when I think sparks will fly.

The characters of the individual angels are well thought out and it is easy to differentiate between them. All too often, it is hard to pick out singular individuals, yet in Awaken the author has deftly managed to make each character three dimensional. You really care about what happens to each and every one of them, a trick many authors never manage to pull off let alone achieve in a debut novel.

Overall, Awaken is an interesting and gripping read, one which I enjoyed and would thoroughly recommend.

Awaken is a fast-paced journey that never pulls its punches. It is a really cool take on mythology, as well as biblical themes such as angels and demons. The main character, Sophia, is by no means a weakling and takes some pretty heavy stuff in her stride. I love books with such strong female characters like this! This book will take you on a wild ride and you will not be able to put this book down.

i really enjoyed this book. i found it was a little slow to get into initially as it starts out a few thousand years ago. i understand that the scene we go through was important to the story, but i was really put off by it. once i got to the first chapter, and was introduced to sophia and her life, i felt a lot better about the sort of book it was.

honestly, the biblical aspects really threw me off. i'm not a fan of christian related stuff (idk why, i just find it boring. probably because it's forced on kids in school etc). this book is in no way religious. i mean, it might be, but i don't think so. if you're like me, don't worry. just keep reading.

towards the end of the book, things started to get a little confusing and i wasn't sure what was happening or why. this could be because i had audio on and wasn't reading along with it at the same time (which is entirely my own fault for not understanding).

i felt that the world building was really good, but some of the mythology should've been explained sooner. it really bothered me how sophia always had new information coming, rather than everyone telling her to begin with. the world building was lacking when it came to descriptions of the surroundings and the atmosphere of the places. they were in an underground city type thing at one point, but it didn't feel like it. there wasn't much interaction with the people in this place, or things that should make the reader feel what the character does. it honestly just felt like they were in an empty cave and occasionally bumped into a young girl.

along with the world building, there wasn't much physical descriptions of the characters. i like to imagine the characters in my head, but they all have blue eyes and white hair, and it's really difficult to separate them from another. also, why do they have these physical traits? it's not really explained (and if it is, then i clearly missed something). do people of colour also have white hair and blue eyes? or are these people only white? what's the significance of the hair? maybe it's just me, but it's something i'd like to know more about. **EDIT, the author has explained what i wanted to know, and that it is in the book (which i missed), and yes there are some poc**

sophia was an interesting character. (i love the idea of her rainbow hair) sophia is very much a mary sue - which is annoying but i understand why. i feel bad for her as so much of her world has changed, even the people closest to her have lied to her, but she just takes everything and doesn't really question it. someone give sophia a week holiday in fiji or something. that girl has earned it.

jasmine was most definitely my favourite character in this book. she reminds me so much of a friend i have. i thought her friendship with sophia was really well written. (i love platonic relationships). i loved both nan and bren (but i didn't like enl'iel that much :/ ). honestly, i hated ben from the beginning till the end.

this book was a good read, but a little long. i will definitely be reading the sequel, surrender, and i recommend you do too. (i've been trying to convince my sister to read it as i think she'd love this book).

Since I've joined Twitter and Instagram, I've found some books I would never have come across otherwise - and Awaken is one of my favourite finds! The characters were brilliantly developed, the world was beautifully built, and the story itself was intriguing - but more on that in a moment.

I was a little worried when I started because there are recurring biblical subtones, and I'm as far away from religious as you can get, but as it turned out there's nothing like the rise of a new Satan to catch my interest! Who knew? :D

Don't mistake this for a religious read, though - it's really not. This is by every means an urban fantasy novel, and chances are I'd have put it down again very quickly if it was as religious as I feared. The religious subtones are just that - subtones, there to give the story more depth. Instead I found it hard to stop reading, and was engrossed in Sophia's story very quickly.

There are so many things I enjoyed about this novel, but the characters in Awaken are easily my highlight. They are believable and likeable, even the baddies. One of the bad guys, Nik'ael, is one of my favourite characters in the story, along with Koi, who reminds me of my sensei, and Brennan, who I adore for his everything.

The character development was excellent, too. Sophia had a lot to get used to - whether she liked the changes to her life or not, and they were huge changes! - and I think she deserves a gold star for being so patient. If I were in her shoes I'd have snapped much sooner.

The writing style is oddly comforting in a strange, familiar way, and the speech feels very natural. All of those put together made this a smooth read for me. I felt in very good hands the whole way through, and the plot twist at the end came as a big surprise to me. I felt for the characters - even for one of the antagonists, Nik'ael - and wanted them to be save.

The whole story has a lot of depth to it. The world is well planned, the characters developed extremely well, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how Sophia is going to get out of her current situation in the sequel, Surrender.

Some of the paragraphs were too long for my liking, and personally I think the cover lets it down, but neither of those spoiled my enjoyment in any way. Awaken is a really exciting debut full of promise, and I can't recommend it enough! If you're looking for an exciting new urban fantasy read, then Awaken is your book!

“I always knew I was different. Not weird or quirky, just different.”

Sophia Woodville is a normal young woman on the surface. Her career in nursing allows her to use her gift of healing and the worst thing she has to worry about is trying to get out of nightclubbing with her best friend, Jasmine. But dark forces are after Sophia and events are about to change her life forever. Is she strong enough to survive and fight for everything she loves?

This book is an interesting blend of fantasy and action, weaving biblical themes throughout. The author has a unique take on demons and I was pulled in with the description of the flood and Noah. The writing style is very descriptive and allows the reader to paint a vibrant picture of the world that Sophia inhabits. At times I was so pulled in it took me a moment to realize I was not right in Sophia’s world.

Awaken by GR Thomas is a book I would recommend for anyone who likes adventure and fantasy books. It’s about a girl by the name of Sophia who comes from a family of gifted people who are mostly healers, mystics, seers, etc. She is starting work as a nurse in the ER when something happens and life as she knows it gets turned upside down. As it turns out, pretty much everything that she has been told and grew up believing… were lies and she found out that she was more important than what she originally believed and is thrown into a world of Angels, Demons, and Magic. Sophia has to fight to save everyone and has to figure out who is telling her the truth and who she can actually trust. There are twists, turns, and there is a twist ending that will leave you surprised and a bit angry about the fact that it does end in a cliffhanger… but the fact that the story isn’t finished will make up for it and make you excited for the next one. I love the world that GR Thomas creates in this book and it is interesting to me how she includes history, the bible, and fantasy all in one book. The characters and their interactions are funny and there are for sure times where you will be on the edge of your seat, reading non-stop because you will be so into the book that you will probably also lose all track of time.

Powerfully enchanting! I was completely blown away by this enthralling book! From the very first page, I was completely captivated until the very end and found it extremely hard to put down. The writing was just superbly excellent with intricate attention to details. The characters were well thought out with palpable emotions that made me actually feel in touch with them. With a completely unique storyline, Awaken brings an all new take on the classic Angels vs Demons theme. This book has a little bit of everything mixed in. Angels, Demons, magic, sci-fi, a splash of romance and even a few zombies! With tons of intrigue and plenty of plot twists that stunned me, there's not a single dull moment in this book, I was gripping my tablet with sweaty hands- eagerly devouring the pages to find out what would happen next! The attention to details and the complex world-building and thought that the author put into this book was just amazing! There is quite a cliffhanger at the end that both had me clawing up the wall in anticipation and then clapping for joy that there will be a sequel to this amazing book! This is a seriously really amazingly good book that will soon be a chart-topper!

Awaken by GR Thomas gets a huge 5 Stars. An age-old war has been waging in the shadows for aeons...good & evil, angels & demons. Poor Sophia Woodville is dragged into a world and destiny she's been protected against, all the while, little did she know she is a chosen one, a child of the light, the Earthborn Angel, she holds the destiny of mankind and angelkind in the palm of her hand - only she holds the key to salvation. A story of biblical proportions, that travels the globe, cleverly interwoven with English royal genealogy - genius! A variety of believable characters, human and angelic, plot twists and turns by the chapter - the best saved to last! I paid full attention and despite numerous little clues laid throughout I honestly didn't see the final blow coming...incredible character twist! I loved this book, thankfully the first book in a trilogy so more to come. GR Thomas has a wonderful creative prose with a believable modern punch. A must read for the lover of full on fantasy.

This book is now one of my new favourite books! I loved all the characters and it grabbed me the whole time! I loved how Sophia (the main character) was basically discovering who she really was. I also liked how we got some chapters on Nik’ael and how he is more or less getting good.

I still love this book so much and I still have the same thoughts as the first time I read this book. But I will say the book was a bit confusing as there were lots of characters. But after a while when you get used to the characters and know who is who everything starts to get a lot better. This book is really really good and I still 100% recommend it and now that I finally own the second book I can’t wait to read it!!

Grace Thomas is an excellent writer and her story builds on great vocabulary, imagery, intense scenes, in-depth background information, and an excellent ending that had me wanting her next one. Hopefully her release will come sooner rather than later, because the cliffhanger had me wanting...no needing...more. I love the characters she designed, and it shows in her story, her true care and understanding of her character's personalities and actions. You will definitely see more of this author, so get started on her book right away!

What a great first novel from Australian author GR Thomas. "Awaken" spans time itself - intertwining biblical tales and medieval history with a modern day world in a thrilling adventure filled with love, lust and humour.
The reader is taken on a whirlwind, worldwide journey - left at a cliff-hanger at the end, cannot wait to read the second book of the series!
Highly recommended for both young adults and adults who are young at heart.

Oh, for the love of all things wonderful--this book was an absolute delight. G.R. Thomas does an amazing job creating a multidimensional world. Cleverly crafted, this book is a mix of history, mythology and biblical stories. From Noah's Ark to England's monarchy, there are surprises at every turn. Truly, a one of a kind read. Take a chance on this well thought-out book.

I received Awaken by the author to read and review. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were some slower parts and a lot of information to take in. But it’s all there to lead up to the war between angels and demons.
Sofia is earth-born and I absolutely love her character. From the rainbow coloured hair nurse who loves to heal people to the earth born angel she’s turning into, she’s sassy, bumbling with self doubt, but willing to take on her destiny and give it all a go.
I love all the unique characters who help Sofia train and become her destiny. And her two best friends Jaz and Ben.
Very much looking forward to book 2. The cliffhanger at the end of Awaken I did not see coming.
