For a human race on the cusp of extinction, breeders are the most prized men in the world. One in three thousand are born to the wealth, privilege and status of the position. A life in the lap of luxury, the chance to be anything and do whatever one wants, and all that’s required is to do one’s civic duty and aid in repopulating humanity. Of course, if you’re Rohan Mathews, that’s not going to be easy.

As a student of the tower where breeder males are taught, kept and tended to, his greatest concerns are passing his classes, avoiding trouble with security, and of course keeping his secret relationship with best friend Kaden completely secret. After all, what use is a breeder who won’t breed?

That ceases to matter when Rohan finds his mother wounded and on the run from security. When he’s handed a small flash drive and told to escape, keeping secrets and passing classes are the least of his troubles. A really enjoyable read from start to finish.

The author has been able to paint an incredibly detailed world without ever even showing us much of it. This dystopian future feels real and plausible, with incredible effort put in to making it so. At no point was I left second-guessing anything or finding myself confused from some unexplained detail.

The two main characters were fun, their personalities clear and distinct.

All in all, I have to say this is the start of something special with Shane Jason Taylor.

Only issue I had with this book is that there doesn't seem to be a sequel planned to continue this story, as it certainly has potential to go on.

Decent writing, despite some editing errors, but this was just exhausting. More dystopia than science fiction, electrolaser stun rifles notwithstanding. Not a romance -- it's not marketed as such but I was hoping. I will NOT be reading more.

Ed: thinking on it a bit more, I'm changing my rating to 2 stars. It really was exhausting, and if I hadn't needed it as the month ran out, it definitely would've ended up on my tiny DNF shelf.
