One Enchanted Christmas

Rate this book
Last December, mystery author Maren Grant had the most perfect night of her life. On a glimmering winter evening, she got to watch the photo shoot for her very first book and ended up on a magical date with the cover model himself—Colin Renwycke.

Fast forward one year. This December, with a looming deadline, restless spirit and her creative spark long since gone, Maren is desperate to get unstuck. And she can’t get Colin out of her head…or his year-old open invitation to spend a couple weeks writing at his family’s farm.

Drew Renwycke never planned to come home and take over the Renwycke family farm. But he’s spent too many years watching his siblings unravel, including his brother, Colin, after one terrible family mistake. If moving to Maple Valley, Iowa, renovating an old farmhouse and switching careers is what it takes to put the Renwycke family back together, he’ll do it.

But his simple plan upends when a scrappy author lands on his doorstep. And she just might be the key to coaxing his brother home. But what if he wants her all to himself? Drew will have to choose between his Christmas wish and the enchantment of a holiday romance that just might be the happy ending they all long for.

3.5 stars. Kindle freebie romance time again (except now it will set you back 99c) with a Christmas theme that caught my attention.

description

Our heroine, Maren, is an author starting a series about a smart (and hot) detective, and she's just sold the first book. When she sees Colin Renwycke, the cover model the publisher has chosen, she's in insta-love -- and it's compounded when Colin takes her on a fabulous date after the photo shoot. He casually invites her to spend some time writing her next book at his family farm in Iowa, even if he's not around.

Fast forward to one year later: it's early December, and Maren is suffering from a writer's block on the sequel to her very successful novel. Her best friend convinces her that now is the time to take Colin up on his open invitation. So she does -- only Colin isn't there when she shows up unannounced. But his brother Drew is, along with his troubled sister Leigh and her daughter Winnie, who's a big fan of Maren's. Winnie convinces Drew to let their uninvited guest Maren stay a night. Somehow a night turns into a couple of weeks...

This charming novella is given a bit of depth through the troubles in Drew and Colin's family, especially the relationship between the two of them, but Leigh is also recovering from long-term addictions. It keeps things fairly light, however, and there's a quirkily humorous narrator that pops up with comments every so often. Drew's a good guy, trying his best to save the old family farm and put his fractured family back together.

Reread December 2019:

1) Maren is me down to her career choice, Starburst preference, and propensity towards daydreaming.
2) This is literal Christmas Aesthetic Goals.
3) The writing is just top notch
4) Somehow there is a ton of character depth and emotion packed in 129 pages??
5) The narrator comments are my absolute FAVORITE.
6) I. love. this. story.
7) The end

Re-Read December 2018:

I LOVE THIS STORY SO MUCH MY GOSH.

Can I just say that Maren and Drew are my ultimate OTP?? And the setting and writing and narrator comments and and and *flails*

(This story is so magical. It makes me smile. <3)

I lowered my rating a tad this time. Not because I didn't enjoy it as much but because the typos were more distracting than last time. Still, I can tell reading it is going to become an annual tradition. ;)

4.5 stars!

Where has this been all my life??

This was free on Kindle (and is until Saturday - HURRY UP AND GET IT) so I quite honestly didn't expect it to be that great. I've grown a bit more critical of romance lately, and I just thought it would be a cheesy chick-flick type thing.

BUT HAHAHAHA NOPE.

It blew my expectations out of the water.

Lovely Things:

- The characters were real and didn't act like idiots (this is important, people) and were actually SUPER RELATABLE. EXCUSE ME WHILE I SCREAM FOR A THOUSAND YEARS. Maren was flighty but in a good way, and of course, she's a writer. So that's enough reason to love her. Drew is like me basically. I can see a lot of myself in him. He's quiet and wants to help everyone and is just an all-around fantastic guy. He's not perfect - how boring would that be?? - but he's a genuinely awesome person.

- AND JUST MAREN AND DREW TOGETHER. They are adorable.

- The small-town vibe. Excuse me, but I just really want to take a trip to Maple Valley, Iowa, RIGHT THIS SECOND. It's an adorable town with a winter carnival, snow-capped roofs, and a "wishing bell." Plus, the Renwykes' farmhouse sounds like the perfect place to write. Just sayin.'

- The fun writing style. The narrator's insertions were highly amusing, and the wry wit was seamlessly woven into the story. It was just my kind of book.

- Alllll the depth. In case you're worried this is just a bunch of fluff, allow me to reassure you. There's a LOT of depth to the characters, and the book is partially centered on Drew trying to repair broken relationships in his family. (Totally didn't almost make me cry, nope.)

Not So Lovely Things:

- There were some typos. And that's about it, folks. I'm shaving off half a star for a few typos that jolted me from the story, but besides that, it was PERFECTION.

4.5 stars!

Wow. What a pleasant surprise!
I mean, I did expect an enjoyable read -- this is one of Melissa Tagg's books, after all! ;) -- but I was still taken by surprise by how much I really enjoyed this book! If you know me well, you know that I'm not real big on Christmas books. I like them, sure, but I don't often truly love them. Well, I think I may have to officially name this as my favorite Christmas book.
And can I just go ahead and call it quirky? Because it was. And I really like that!

I loved the writing style! I think the narrator was just what this book needed to make it better than simply "a really good read".
I loved the characters! They were fun and likable. And quite believable, too, I think.
I loved the storyline! Like the characters, it was quite fun and even rather believable-- more than I expected it to be.

I enjoyed this story and the way Melissa told it. I hope she writes more novellas like this one-- I'm excited to read more! And I'm also excited to read more about the Renwycke family! (Also, did I mention I love that surname? Just a little bonus, I guess. ;) )

UPDATE: Re-read this in 2016 and it's just as good the second time around!

Nobody does contemporary romance quite like Melissa Tagg. I have yet to read one of her stories that I didn't like, and although One Enchanted Christmas is a novella, and novellas don't usually get five stars from me, I loved this story. From the setting to the Christmas-y feel, this was as close to perfect as a novella can be for me. The romance was a sweet, quirky one, and Maren and Drew are lovable, believable characters.

It was nice touch that the story had a narrator. It was a nice way to move from scene to scene and definitely enhanced the Christmas feel to the story for me. It wasn't so much as to break up the flow of the story, but just enough.

Overall, a lovely little read that I'm glad made it's way into my Christmas reading this year.

Warning: major overuse of "love", "!!", and "oh my gosh!".

Notes made during Chapter 1: Oh my gosh! Love this book!! Love narrator - she's hysterical! Heroine is an adorable nut (in a good way); I can totally imagine her as one of my friends.

Notes made during Chapter 2: Oh my gosh! If all Melissa Tagg's stories and characters are this delightful and captivating, I need to start downloading and start reading!

More notes as reading: Love the writing style. Love the narration; it felt like I was watching a fun movie. Love the use of * (asterisks) for adding humorous notes during the story. Love the Hero - I want one just like him!

Oh my gosh!! Loved it!! I want to go hang out with this author. She has got to be a quirky, hilarious hoot!! Maybe she needs a new bff??

I'm very, very disappointed that I didn't enjoy this more as I was perfectly ready to fall in love with Melissa Tagg's world and characters (and I really thought I would!), but this was just "meh" for me.

I wasn't swept up into it :(
I didn't love the characters :(
I don't have a burning desire to continue the series :(

I really thought it'd be one of those books, you know? One of those authors, whose plot, characters, and setting are just so irresistible and wonderful that you can't help but wanting more? It didn't happen to me with this book! I'm disappointed! I wanted it to happen!

My expectations were probably too high, but even so, I didn't really enjoy reading this book. It was "just okay". Hopefully better luck next time when I try a Tagg book again - for I shan't give up on her yet!

What a fun novella for the holidays! I loved the cute, quippy narration interjected by the author (reminded me of Lorelai Gilmore); it was a creative way to move forward in scenes. I think I would only enjoy it in a novella though, and she did taper it off partway through which was good to not break up the pacing of the story during the best parts. The dynamics of Drew's family were interesting as they shifted and were impacted by transition. I enjoyed the contrast between brooding Drew and lighthearted Maren- they balanced each other out and brought out the best in each other. Highly recommend!

(I purchased a copy of this book; this is my honest review)

If there wasn't one instance of profanity and half of an expletive phrase in this book, it would have received three stars instead of one from me.

That being said, this book was a cute romance that made me smile and chuckle. I liked how deep each chapter dug into the lives of Maren and Drew. The supporting cast was great and the setting superb. This story made me feel like pulling out all my Christmas CDs and having an extended sing-along session.

A few things bothered me and pulled me from the story.
1. One profanity and half of an expletive phrase (as mentioned above).
2. The leads sleeping in the same house throughout, and together on one occasion -- all prior to marriage.
3. There was too much focus on Maren's hair throughout the first seventy percent of the book.
4. The narrator pulled me away from caring about the story every time. It was almost like having the author sitting there watching me read and whispering tidbits of info into my ear -- right when the scene was getting really good on its own. It was just really awkward for me.
5. There were many typos, including the lead's last name being misspelled at least once.

I was surprised that faith didn't come into this story until near the end (I noted the first instance at 92%). Threads of faith are usually staples in Melissa Tagg's books, so I was disappointed that this one barely had one.

Also, I was disappointed that characters seemed just fine lying to each other, only feeling guilty about it around Christmastime. Shouldn't they have felt convicted about it throughout the year rather than only for a week out of it?

This is the first of Melissa Tagg's books that was a miss for me. I've adored all of her others. Plenty of my friends have loved this one, though, so I'm sure it will be a huge hit with many, many readers out there.

I was not compensated for my honest review.

December 2017:

I am SO glad I added this onto my Christmas Swoon Fest list! It's still super cute and I still love it! I have a feeling this series is going to be a must read every year!

January 2016:

Maren is in a rut. With a deadline for her second book looming in the not so distant future, she is desperate to find her inspiration anywhere she can. With thoughts of: "Is she a one book wonder?" "Was the first book just a fluke?", she decides to take Colin up on his year old open invitation and heads to his family farm in Maple Valley, IA to see if she can find her creative spark again.

Drew has given up everything to head back to Maple Valley, IA to see if he can finally fix what had been broken. One past mistake has left his family in shambles and he is determined to be the glue that puts them back together. He will do anything and everything he can to make this happen, including sacrificing his own happiness, to give his family back theirs. Little did he know that fate had something else in store for him.

Both Maren and Drew embark on a journey of self discovery, friendship and love. They both had different ideas for where their futures would lead but were far from disappointed when things ended up better than what they had imagined. I really enjoyed seeing these two together. Whether they were making wishes in the bell tower or talking in the workshop or enjoying a sleigh ride into town... *dreamy sigh* I definitely wanted more of Maren and Drew!

I have to tell you that I absolutely adored this book! I think one of my favorite parts was the narration of the author in different sections of the book. It's like she knew the questions I was going to have a that particular time and was telling me... I know what you're thinking.. I'm right there with you... trust me... I know what I'm doing... ;) Super cute!

I also loved the setting of this book! I think small towns are one of my favorite settings of books. So much happens in a small town and you just gotta love it! I can't wait to visit Maple Valley, IA again! I am hoping more than one person there will get a HEA! ;)

I am so glad one of my good friends suggested I read this book. It was the perfect way to spend my Sunday! This is my very first book by Melissa Tagg and I am definitely looking forward to more books by her! Any author that can grab me from the very beginning of the book is definitely a keeper in my opinion! :)

And of course I just can't forget my casting choice! This was another fun one for me to cast... ;)

Getting a crush on the model chosen for the cover of your own book is quite baffling, but leaving to Iowa, one year after you met him in person and talked to him just once, hoping to meet him again is completely crazy! Maren Grant is willing to do anything to live her big, romantic moment and, in just two weeks, she will find out that the best ending for her personal story is the unexpected one!

Every time I finish reading a story by Melissa Tagg I find myself smiling like a fool. Whatever she writes, a novel, a short story or a novella, this author has an extraordinary talent and creates characters that go directly to the reader’s heart. It does not matter what you are doing, if you read Tagg’s work you will keep thinking about her characters continually; on the street, at the grocery, at work.. it is useless, they will take up residence in your mind and you simply will not be able to send them away.

In “One Enchanted Christmas” we meet Maren Grant, a little crazy but adorable writer/teacher and Drew Renwycke, a little aloof in the beginning but deep down a tenderhearted guy and definitely a man you can rely on.

Maren and Drew meet each other in really peculiar circumstances (she tries to sneak into his house -from the roof!!-) because one year before Colin Renwycke -Drew’s brother and the guy whom Maren has a huge crush on- had invited the girl to spend some time at his farm in Iowa. Once in that farm, though, Maren will realize that things are a little different from how Colin had described them, but destiny has some surprises in store for her maybe even more wonderful than she thinks!

The story is set in a little town, Maple Valley, that I had already “visited” when I read Three Little Words and, while waiting for my turn to move there with Tagg’s series "The Walker Family", I will keep dreaming with Maren and Drew and the lovely moments they shared. I cannot wait to meet the Walkers!

Funny, romantic and totally Christmassy, “One Enchanted Christmas” is a delightful book! Do not miss it out!

P. S.: The “narrator” is awesome!

A winsome slice of Christmas cheer wrapped around a unique spin. What would happen if a romance author fell in love with her cover model? What would happen if that tingly hook took the action to snow-swooshed Maple Valley-- a kind of Stars Hollow with a classic hollywood twist as is Tagg's established brand?

Herein, we meet Maren, a buoyant and spunky voice who will remind you of your favourite Irene Dunne moment. Fiercely intelligent and still relatable and likeable Maren isn't sure how to balance her personal life with the worlds she creates on the page.

When she meets Colin, the dashing cover model for her mystery series, life stops in a sudden, starry jolt. A magical evening later and Maren wonders if her world will turn forever.

Meanwhile, hardworking and crafty Drew ( think Luke from GG) doesn't possess his brother's metropolitan flair. When Maren and Drew come together, in a rural country Christmas setting complete with a rustic tang of cider and pine, Christmas unravels in the best and most delectable way possible.

For a tangible reading experience, look no further than this cup of Christmas Cheer. At once funny and achingly sweet, One Enchanted Christmas transcends the usual fare of its ilk as a story held under the pen of a competent author with an unexpected turn of phrase.

One Enchanted Christmas is the first book in the Enchanted Christmas series. I have never read a book by Melissa Tagg before, but i'm certainly glad I picked this one up, it was just so good! One Enchanted Christmas was such a sweet, romantic, quick novella. It had me hooked from the very first minute I started reading, and I couldn't put it down.

Mystery author Maren Grant had the most perfect night of her life on a glimmering winter evening one December. Maren got to watch the photo shoot for her very first book. That night Maren got to spend a magical date with the cover model, Colin Renwycke. Fast forward a year later, this December Maren is stuck, with a looming deadline, and her creative spark is now long gone. Maren can't seem to get Colin out of her head.

Drew Renwycke wants nothing but the best for his brother, Colin. After watching Colin and the rest of his siblings unravel from a past terrible family mistake Drew must make the most of it. Drew never planned on coming home to watch the family farm, but if that's what he has to do, then he'll definitely do it. Drew just wants to put his family back together, so if that means moving to Maple Valley, Iowa and switching his career to put their family back together Drew will do it.

It can be a challenge for an author to create a novella that truly captures the personalities of the characters, contains deep and memorable scenes, and leaves the reader feeling as if they have read a full story when they reach the end. I’m thrilled to say that One Enchanted Christmas not only meets, but exceeds those criteria.

This wonderful novella had me laughing and really enjoying myself. The author uses endearing people, situations which range from fun to heartfelt, and a great narrator’s voice to allow the reader to be a part of Maren and Drew’s story.

One Enchanted Christmas is set in Maple Valley, where some of the author’s other books take place, however, it stands alone for those who haven’t read the other stories yet. It has definitely put me in the Christmas spirit and left me with a warm, fuzzy feeling. I just loved it!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A good Christmas read. Love the feel of the book and the sweetness of the story. I could have used more of a Christian theme and as most novella's go it could have been extended a bit more. Also, at one point a guy and a girl fall alseep on a bench and didn't wake up until morning. No insuation of a intimate interaction, but I still didn't like that. It wasn't a surprising read-a little like some Hallmark movies-but of course it ends happy :)

I just loved this little story! I say little since it's a novella but it really had a "full fledged novel" feel to it that I really enjoyed. Plus, it's set at Christmas which is my favorite time of year so...

Having started in on Melissa's new series with From the Start I was able to relate to some of the familiar scenery. I loved her incorporation of some of the characters from From the Start but yet her ability to make One Enchanted Christmas its own story.

I easily fell in love with Maren - hello, fellow writer here! And Drew was just an awesome character. As tends to happen with novellas, I ended it wanting more, but yet feeling 100% satisfied with their story too. Oxymoron...maybe.

One thing I did notice was Melissa's use of a "narrator" to comment on a few things. Though I loved the story, I did find myself slightly taken out of the story when the narrator came to chime in. Personally, I would have liked to just let Maren and Drew show me what happened. Then again, I did like the style the narrator took - conspiratorial and conversational in the best way. It was a clever way to gain more information in a short amount of time so I "see what she did there" :)

All in all - a MUST read novella by the talented Melissa Tagg. You'll love it as well as her other books!

This was . . . okay? It's a short romance and not terribly complicated. And it did the job and fit my mood. But I couldn't help feeling the characters and setting were, I don't know, flat?

Take Maren. She's an author whose first book got a surprise publishing contract with a real, live photo shoot for the cover. In the publishing Mecca of Minneapolis. Not to bag on Minneapolis, but that seems kind of unlikely to me. As does her first book being such a knock-out success that a random thirteen year-old girl would be a huge fan (and recognize her on sight and convince her uncle to let said author stay when she sets up the situation in the cover copy). It was a mystery book. I have four only-very-recently-young teen girls living in my house, some of them huge readers, and not one of them could name a mystery author if asked; let alone recognize one on sight. And Drew doesn't make much more sense. His "dream" of being a farmer is just silly. Nearly as much of a fantasy as his plans for his siblings.

So yeah, there's a lot of things that just don't survive scrutiny in the story. Still, as a light romance with a fun tone and the occasional cute narrator interruption, it entertained me for a bit. And that's no small thing. I can't recommend it highly, but as a short Christmas read that at least hits the romance highlights, you could do worse.

This book is most definitely unconventional. I doubt many authors could have pulled off this style and made me love every minute of the ride, but Melissa Tagg is definitely brilliant. I enjoy her stories more every time--and, considering that I rated her debut novel (Made to Last) 4 stars, that says a lot.

I loved all the characters in this story. It was fun to go back to Maple Valley and get a taste of the small-town life at Christmas. But it was the relationship between Maren and Drew that had me turning page after page to find out what happened next. Definitely everything a little Christmas tale should be!

This book lived up to its name enchanting. I loved the voice in this book it was great. I found myself at moments laughing out loud. But also there were moments that weren't so funny as the characters worked through their "stuff". I loved this book and would recommend it to any romance lover, Melissa Tagg lover or someone that wants to discover a new author or have a fun quick read to read in between the big ones!

I’m not huge on Novellas, but I saw the word “Christmas “and had to read. I haven’t felt like Christmas lately so needed a bit of inspiration.

This is a cute, adorable, and fun read. I love the idea of the narrator!

Highly enjoyable read that has a greatChristmas feel to it! 💗 Great characters, fun scenes, romance, and Christmas. How can one go wrong with that?

Charming, cozy Christmas novella. Maren Grant is a budding author who dreams about the handsome man who is featured on the cover of her first book. During the photo shoot, she meets Colin, and they go out on a date. It's a memorable night that leaves her enchanted with Colin. But she never hears from him again other than one post card. He told her if she ever needed a break to head for his farm in Iowa. A year later with a deadline looming for book 2 in her series, she heads for the farm and discovers Colin's brother, Drew, is running the farm. Now she's in a dilemma as she is torn between her dream man and his real life, warmhearted brother.

This book had a different writing style with interjections by a narrator. I didn't like it at first, but as the story went along if didn't seem to distract as much. Enjoyable book for a quick read during the Christmas season.

A sweet story, enjoyable. The characters were quirky and funny and I enjoyed getting to know them.
The only reason it has a slightly lower rating is because the story development was kind of iffy and the characters ended up falling asleep together on a bench. Otherwise, the romance was sweet, but this story didn't do a ton for me.

For a person who says she doesn't read romance, I have a ginormous soft spot for Melissa Tagg's books and all things Maple Valley. Loved this and it was completely adorable. It's short enough to read in one sitting. And I might have identified with Maren a lot on the subject of having strong attachments to several of my characters. :P Fun read and I hope we get more of the Renwykes!

(4.5 Stars) I love the premise--an author falls for her main character, hence, falls for the cover model. Brilliant! Who hasn't had a little crush on a fictional character before?

Maren was lucky enough to go to the photo shoot for her book and ends up going on an enchanted date with Colin, the cover model. Almost a whole year has passed and she can't quit thinking about that open-ended invitation sent via postcard--a chance to go to his family's abandoned farmhouse to write. She could definitely use some inspiration for her next book, right about now. A spur-of-the-moment decision lands her trying to get into the farmhouse--but it's not really abandoned. Colin's older brother, Drew, is now making a go of the farm.

I love the way Maren interjects runaway thoughts to the readers, as if this is a play or a movie. She's such a creative, yet serious, yet humorous character--one who is very endearing. She often surprised me by her words, actions, and reactions.

Drew is a sturdy, stable, responsible character and takes his role in the family and community seriously. Colin is flighty, fun, and fickle--the opposite of Drew--but has an important role in the story. I loved their sister, Leigh, who has been down on her luck until now, as well as her daughter, Winnie. Such great characters, a quirky small town, and a magical setting during an enchanting time of year. I can't wait to read more about this family and this town!

Content: mild romantic elements (kissing, very vague implication of something from the past). Clean!

Melissa just makes me smile with her clever prose, the normalness (is that even a word? We’re going with it here.) of her characters, and the laugh-out-loud situations her characters find themselves in. I literally laughed while reading this one!

Case in point: check out this line concerning the fashionable-yet-not-warm-for-snow attire of our main character, Maren. “But a girl didn’t meet a man who might be the love of her life dressed like an Eskimo”- chapter 1. That ought to make you smile!

Besides the heartwarming characters and storyline, one other unique element to this novella was the use of a “narrator”. The narrator set up the story and added a few little side commentary moments which were so clever! And, something new-to-me in fiction. This device allows the story to move faster and still flow, filling in necessary details without cheating on story, and revealing the true feelings of Drew and Maren like an all-knowing outside perspective.

If you’re looking for a quick, sweet, and touching read that’s perfect for the Christmas season, look no further than this novella! And did I mention it’s an independently-published endeavor by Melissa herself? Go support her spunk today.
