Little Perran #1

A Christmas Romance

Rate this book
Romance is the last thing on Frankie Bell’s mind as she gets ready for Christmas in the English village of Little Perran. It’s going to be a quiet affair once the annual Great Little Perran Christmas Bake Off cake competition is over, with Frankie, and her little dog Buster, tucked up warmly in Primrose Cottage. Fate, however, has other plans and Little Perran is thrown into turmoil when the film star, Roux Lockhart, comes to stay.

The spirit of the season weaves its magic and a freak snow storm that blows in a surprise visitor. Frankie discovers love from an unexpected quarter, but can she trust it? And is someone cheating with their Christmas cake?

A delightful Christmas love story to be enjoyed with a mug of hot chocolate and a roaring log fire.

I have fairly high expectations for the books I read which causes me no end of trouble at times. The first chapter of this had me somewhat perplexed to the extent I re-read it a couple of times and still couldn't work out what was going on.

We start with Frankie opening an oven door to prod a fruit cake. Fair enough. Then she begins cracking eggs into a bowl and there is mention of fairy cakes to make and mince pies to go into the oven and the filling into the sponge. A warm Victoria sponge cake is on the worktop. Then her friend Birdie arrives and sees 'the Christmas cake on the kitchen counter' - is this the fruit cake that was in the oven? She has the sponge cake which has only just come out of the oven as well... and she is cracking eggs for some reason or other. But then she takes the hot fruit cake out of the oven and drops it onto a place mat!

At this point I got totally confused and decided to go and lie down in a darkened room ;)

Festive romance complete with snow, open fires and village quaintness - this is one to curl up with.

Frankie Bell is busy prepping for the Little Perran Christmas Cake Bake-Off and forgetting her wayward ex. Roux Lockhart, film star extraordinaire, is busy filming and trying to keep off the media's radar. When the weather conspires to bring these two together, the residents of Little Perran get a festive build-up they're unlikely to forget...

The plot is festively romantic, the writing cosy, and the pace wonderfully fast. A great feel-good novella.

Little Perran is a small scenic village in the middle of the English countryside; quaint, peaceful and uneventful. That is until famous film star Roux Lockhart arrives to stay, whilst shooting his latest film nearby.

Frankie Bell, the village’s librarian, has the task of looking after her Aunty Rose’s house whilst she is away. The same house that Roux will be staying in. It’s up to her to give him a warm welcome and leave some of her scrumptious mince pies as a welcome.

The villagers are sworn to secrecy about Roux’s whereabouts, but it’s not long before the press come snooping around.

When a snowstorm blows in causing havoc on the roads, Frankie loses her way whilst returning from visiting her mum Joyce, and with little visibility, ends up causing another car to career of the road. The driver is none other than Roux. With both cars unusable and miles away from the village, the two set off on foot to find somewhere to stay.

The first house they come across is empty, but having looked after this house for the owner in the past, Frankie know’s where the spare key is and the two let themselves in.

When the storm doesn’t pass for a few days, and the two of them are stuck in the house with no access to the outside world, panic ensues, largely for Roux as the press get wind of his disappearance and descend on the village causing carnage, especially when his uptight, spoilt brat of an ex-fiancée arrives, declaring her love for him, and putting out an appeal for his safe return.

This is the first book that Lynda has written under her alias, Amy Perfect.

The way Lynda describes the village of little Perran puts you in the perfect mood for Christmas, with the cold wind and snow on the floor.

Roux Lockhart, although a film star is after a quiet life and wants to step away from the limelight. He has decided that this will be his last movie. He’s a very private person who’s still reeling from his break up with his fiancée Sasha.

Frankie is an exceptionally caring and emotional young woman, although a little stubborn a times. She also is nursing a broken heart after her boyfriend Paul took off to Australia with another woman.

Frankie helps to look after her mum Joyce, who lives in the closest nursing home to the village. Joyce suffers with dementia and doesn’t recognise Frankie any more.

It’s heart-wrenching to feel the pain that Frankie feels about the situation with her mother. It must be devastating for a child, no matter what age, to lose a parent, mentally to this cruel disease. Lynda has written the emotional scenes with Joyce incredibly accurately, using her own experience to make these scenes as realistic as possible.

The village is filled with loveable characters, all with completely different personalities, mainly engaging harmoniously with one another, with the exception of a couple of people.

This is a perfect Christmas read, filled with drama, romance and humour. I was glued to the pages and found myself wandering through the village of Little Perran and into Roux and Frankie’s lives, hoping that the two of them would realise that they were in love, especially Frankie, who needs to put herself on a pedestal and stop thinking so little of herself.

Take a trip to Little Perran join in with the Christmas festivities without leaving the comfort of your own home.

A Christmas Romance Author Lynda Renham.. Also Writing Under The Name Amy Perfect.

I spent my evening curled up with Holly my cat reading: A Christmas Romance after the Author kindly sent me a review copy. I very much enjoyed this book, it is the perfect romantic Christmas story to read on a cold and breezy night. Not only does this book have great characters to follow, but the English village of Little Perran setting seemed very beautiful and Christmas like. This book also has some scenes that really pulls at the heart string and reminds oneself just how important family and community is around the festive season.

The story itself was about Frankie Bell as she prepares Aunty Rose’s house for the famous Roux Lockhart to stay over Christmas. While she is getting the place ready he show up and they have a moment and from then the wheels are in motion. Could his stay spell Christmas love for them both or leave them feeling the frost of the snow instead? Read this amazing Christmas book to find out.

The one thing I loved about this story because it brought tears to my eyes and made me smile too was Joyce Frankie’s mum. She was a very well written character with a heart of gold. I could really feel the sadness of her barely remembering Frankie and the joy in those moments when things changed a little. I think those scenes for me made this book all the more special for Christmas, because love for family is really special. I also like Birdie her best friend another great example of a kind and caring person.

I liked to dislike Paul, he was one of those character that had me yelling at my kindle, because he got my blood boiling and not in the cosy sense.

The end of this book is very heart-warming in many ways. Lynda does a great job at bringing out the warmth in her character and the meaning of the festive season. Once you’ve read this book you’ll wish the time wouldn’t have gone so fast, while immersed in this magical and heart-warming story.

I would recommend this book to anyone who love great character and a Christmas read over the season to warm the heart before it really is Christmas day.

I always love discovering a new author, and although I have a growing collection of Lynda Renhams books on my kindle, I hadn't quite got around to reading them, until A Christmas Romance came along. As I have been mainly reading Christmas books lately, I couldn't resist finally breaking my duck on Lynda's writing, and it couldn't have come a moment too soon.

I am thrilled to say that I loved every second of this book, and was so hooked on the drama that was unfurling that I had absolutely no idea where I was for most of my commute home! Which is to me, always the sign of a great book.

The village of Little Perran had been expecting a quiet Christmas, outside of their Christmas fete and ball, there wasn't much excitement expected. Until that is, Roux Lockhart international film star comes to stay in the village, in a rented cottage while filming nearby.

From the moment Roux makes his first appearance, there seems to be drama, fun and romance sweeping the village. It becomes very eventful, and Frankie Bell is drawn into the centre of it all too.

Everything soon starts to heat up when Frankie and Roux both go missing from the village in a blizzard. The drama surrounding this was brilliant, you were getting chapters both from Frankie's focus, but also of the village and I loved seeing the two sides to this incident.

Little Perran was a picturesque place, and all the villagers had great personalities. There is Frankie's best friend Birdie who is just trying to help Frankie, Stella who appears to be the village flirt, the pub owners, and Cheryl's domination of the Christmas cake competition.

A Christmas Romance brings together all the elements you want from a Christmas story (apart from magic) with a warmth and humour that was a delight to read. If you are wanting an eventful, energetic Christmas story, with a lovely romance too, then A Christmas Romance is the book for you this Christmas.

Thank you so much to Lynda Renham for this review copy. This is my honest opinion.

A Christmas Romance is a quaint little love story between Frankie a baker and a librarian and Roux, an actor in Little Perran. Frankie has been damaged in love and is nursing her wounds. The last things she expects from a world famous heartthrob is a spark of attraction. Rather unexpected isn't it ? Roux is used to exotic and sophisticated actresses, the first time he sees Frankie she has a hole in her sock and flour on her face, but still he falls for her and can't help waiting to catch glimpses of her. The love between these two seems impossible but the way Lynda Renham has written this book it's utterly believable and one can see the impossible happening- two folks who seem to be from different corners of the Earth might actually fall in love. But's it's not all a bed of roses is it - there is a beleaguered ex fiancee and greedy ex boyfriend and fiance on the scene making things difficult for the budding romance. But don't they say love conquers all. What's even better is the community that supports Frankie. That is even stronger than say the attraction for a filmstar in their midst. All in all it makes for a great reading.

Couldn’t put it down

Great chicklit! I couldn’t put it down. I love reading Christmas stories, even in the middle of the summer if I have too.

This one is well written and reads very easily and can’t wait to read the next one in the instalment, although it will probably not be set around Christmas time...

I read the series out of order and have just finished this book last! I loved the story and found the characters totally believable. This one is a lovely Christmas romance and the others look more closely into the love lives of other residents in the village. Well worth a second read at some point.

A Very Heart-warming Christmas Romance

This was my first experience of Lynda Renham 's work, but not my last, I hope. This is one of the funniest, but also one of the dearest stories I have read in a long time. This is for just about everyone, as it is a clean story.

A great story!!

This book shows how strong and wrong love can be when someone needs a true love but can be lead astray by someone with ulterior motives. Hopefully someone with truth in their hearts will be there to save them. You did a great job!! Thank you!!

I have absolutely LOVED this story! I just wish I could have devoured it in one sitting.
I did finish it quite late last night, despite needing to be at work for 8.30 this morning, as I just had to find out if the ending was as happy as I'd hoped. Let's just say I wasn't disappointed. :-)
Having said that this is far from a straight forward boy meets girl and they live happily ever after love story. Never have I ever wanted to bang two heads together as much as I did through part of this story. Why people have to faff about instead of being honest about their feelings, I don't know! I know it's fiction, but people are often like this in real life and don't always see what's staring them in the face and I really felt like I connected with these characters. I so wanted them to find happiness. Their drama made for an entertaining read!
I instantly warmed to Frankie, and almost all of the other characters to be honest. I found Frankie's Mum's story sad, and quite frightening, especially as she's only a few years older than my Mum. Heart-warming though also. I don't know who Roux is based on, but he is just gorgeous!
Little Perran sounds like a lovely place to live. I could totally imagine myself part of that kind of community where everyone knows everyone and all look out for each other. I quite fancied nipping to the Hand and Shears for a glass of wine.
This is so beautifully written and is full of characters I loved. Set in a beautiful village at the most magical time of year. A story of friendship, family, love, heart-break, Christmas traditions, misunderstandings, new romance and cake competitions! What more do you need from a Christmas romance? I highly recommend! Book 2 has already been downloaded to my kindle.

I needed a book to read while undergoing some horrible hospital treatment & this was absolutely perfect .. it was engaging enough to keep my mind occupied but light & breezy enough to make me smile.

The story is set in Little Perran (even the name conjures up bliss) .. it centres around Frankie who works in the local library, she has some wonderful friends in the village which is a tight knit community. Frankie lives with her adorable dog Buster he is the only male company she needs after having her heart broken.

In the run up to the festive season it soon becomes known that a ‘film star’ is coming to the village & will be staying in the cottage which belongs to Frankie’s aunt. Roux is charming, caring & is drawn to Frankie .. will fate throw them together?

I really liked the majority of the characters they all had endearing features apart from Paul (the ex) the relationship Frankie has with her mum is particularly poignant & pulls on the heartstrings.

We have a cake competition, a fancy dress ball, plenty of snow, power cuts, wine, mince pies & drama all nicely wound up in a fabulous Christmas themed story. If you are looking for some romance & entertainment then give this a go you will be glad you did.

Thanks very much to Lynda for gifting me a copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

A Christmas Romance is exactly what you get in the authors latest novella.

This is the type of book where you just want to curl up on a big comfy sofa in front of a roaring fire and turn off from the world outside.

The festive time of the year can really get lost to the storyline I find in books set at this time of year, but not in this book. The author very much keeps the Christmas spirit going throughout. I could easily visualise the snow that the author was describing to me as well as having me drooling over the mention of mince pies and Christmas cake!

Frankie is such a kind hearted soul, she's been hurt in a past relationship and is throwing herself into village life to take her mind off it. She isn't looking for another relationship but when the hunky and famous Roux turns up in the village, she can't help but fall for him.

Roux is just such a fabulous character. He literally has it all, looks, fame, money, charm but over all he really is such a NICE guy. Even though he hasn't been in the village long you can really tell how much he cares about it and the people also.

A Christmas Romance really is a lovely festive read and one I certainly recommend reading.

Many thanks to the author for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this fun, romantic, winter warmer of a read. At just less than 200 pages I soon devoured this story and was a great read to brighten up a grey day.

Set in a sleepy village in the Cotswolds on the run up to Christmas. The latest blockbuster is being filmed on location close to the village and one of the main actors, Roux Lockhart, decides to rent a cottage in the village. He's hoping for peace and quiet especially after breaking up from his media loving American girlfriend.

When Frankie, the local librarian bumps into Roux a friendship of sorts soon develops between them. Frankie is still upset over her broken relationship from Paul last Christmas so is hoping for a happier time this year.

The weather has turned pretty nasty and the roads and villages are soon blocked with snow. Frankie and Roux both find themselves stranded in the snow and leave their abandoned cars and set out to find shelter.

This story follows Frankie and Roux and the rest of the villagers coping with the weather and events to the run up to Christmas.

It was a charming read set in an idyllic location with characters you soon fall in love with.

Hope to hear more from the villagers of Little Perran.

A quaint sleepy English village Little Perran, is roused by the arrival of American movie star Roux Lockhart. The villagers are asked not to reveal his whereabouts and respect his privacy but it’s a secret that is impossible for some residents to keep. Frankie Bell, who is still recovering from the break up with her cheating boyfriend Paul, can’t fully trust that she is ready to love again but when she discovers Roux is staying at her Aunt Roses house there is more than a spark between them.

Little Perran is filled with great characters who usually enjoy a more sedate drama free life. I found myself drawn in to the book easily and although this was released before Christmas last year I have only just got round to reading it as it was on my TBR pile but as the next book in the series is being written I decided to put this as my next read and so glad that I did. If you are looking for romance and humour then this is the book for you. Well done Lynda on another fun filled read.

Really enjoyed this Christmas romance .. A standard Christmas 'Boy meets Girl' romance, but being set in a small village, where the neighbourhood intimacy can suddenly turn from welcome to infuriating, there was a good level of humour as well .. I am really pleased that I have Book 2 on kindle already, waiting to enjoy the next installment ..
