Nightshade MC #4

Head Above Water

Rate this book
Drea Vargas came to Detroit to settle a score. She stayed because it was as good a place as any for her to start over, make a life and home for herself on her own. Things were going well, until a face from her past came back around. Frankie, her cousin, had always been a pain in her ass; nothing had changed. In over his head, he's desperate enough to come to her, knowing that she'd rather watch him drown, but it's not just him in danger. Drea lets herself get drawn into a world she wants no part of because the stakes are too high not to. When her new life choices put her back on the radar of the Nightshade MC, she finds her life even more complicated.

James Monroe knows better than most that you don't always get what you want in life. The picture he'd had of his life never included wearing a Nightshade cut, living on the wrong side of the law he'd taken an oath to protect, but when he was at his lowest they'd been there for him. They'd kept him from spiraling out of control, accepted him, and before he knew it, the club was his family. Still, he wanted more. Now, maybe he's looking in all the wrong places—especially when he starts looking in Drea's direction.

Drea's always found Monroe to be handsome, kind, and the sort of man any woman would be lucky to have. She just never thought of herself as that woman, but quickly it becomes clear that there's something between them, something more than just lust.

Loyalties will be tested, lies will be told and things will not be what they seem as their worlds collide and unexpected becomes the norm.

Not a standalone book. If you haven't recently read the previous books and remember them well, you might get frustrated with this book.

I liked this one. I liked the characters and there was a sufficient amount of action to hold my interest. There are some editing issues and I felt that a couple of things weren't cleared up (like, where's the money and what fell through the floor in the warehouse), but it's a series and there are still some patches left to write about.

The ending was good. The beginning was a little bit slow, but I like that these were mature people (not YA), so not an insta-love book, even if it might have seemed quick... it occurs over a few months. Part of the problem is that I didn't remember these characters from previous books, so their issues were a puzzle, too. The book got really good for me at 45-50%.

To be honest, I only remembered snippets of the previous books, but that's on me (because I read so many different biker books and my memory suffers because of that). So, saying that, I didn't remember who Drea was or what she did that led to Danny being killed, even though I remembered Danny. I didn't remember Monroe, and I still don't understand exactly what the story was with Fiona and Taylor, because it wasn't reiterated here.

The other thing that still bothers me is that this author doesn't give much in the way of detailed physical descriptions. It was better in this book, but still not as much as most other authors give. Her writing is improving, though, and I will stick with this series.

3.5 stars - Overall, not as good as the previous book (which I remember more about), but I think a person just picking up this book abd reading it would likely give up.

3.5 stars for me. While this was an interesting read, it didn't quite hook me as much as some of the other books. Monroe and Drea's romance was very sweet but didn't produce the real connection I have felt with other couples in this series. I do recommend the book for other FCP followers and feel like it's worth the read to catch up on all of the characters in the Nightshades M.C.

Four Stars

I'm giving this book four stars mainly because the author does a good job of portraying the loneliness and desperation which lead the characters down their chosen paths. Even the city they live in seems to be a living, breathing character in this book as it too is trying to find it's way back to more profitable times. As far as Monroe and Drea as a couple goes, I thought they were alright but I didn't feel like their story was particularly romantic. It was more like two lonely people spending time together so they wouldn't be as lonley. Still, I rooted for them to be together at the end. As I've said with the previous books in this series, I feel like the members of Nightshade should have been able to figure out some of the things going on long before they did. Seems they all have gut feelings about things but none of them ever follow up on those feelings! I do like that not everything gets wrapped up by the end of each book. There are still some questions left unanswered so that you know there has to be another book in the series. I know most people hate that but I like having that anticipation for the next book to find the answers..

3.5 stars for this one. I just couldn't get into Drea and Monroe as easily as the other couples. Their was no "romance" they just were. Buster actually got on my nerves in this one telling Monroe how he was feeling or not feeling - whatever! Meg also was a tad harsh - there is quite a difference between being drugged and filmed having sex and voluntarily doing it as a career - again - whatever! It had enough of an interesting storyline to keep me reading but sorry to say its not been one of my favorites. I am interested in finding out what happens with Ace and Jillian. Poor Ace got the real shit end of the stick in this one.

4 stars for the plot and the characters
Not a vanilla MC, they're not choir boys but draw the line between immoral and can-live-with.

A lot of editing issues : misplaced comma, quotations marks and first names all wrong , it's very annoying.

I thought this one went alone fine with the previous books in the series. I thought the couple was a good fit for each other but I thought it ended with a few things unanswered and there really wasn't any big moment that gave me the "feels" so that left me a little disappointed.
