Shady Falls #1

When Trouble Comes: Shady Falls Book 1

Rate this book
Yolanda Rivers’ life in Shady Falls, North Carolina is anything but exciting. She’s worked at a pickle plant for twenty years and hasn’t had a man since her last beau decided that his favorite activities were going upside Yolanda’s head and sleeping with other women. If this isn’t bad enough, Yolanda’s grown children refuse to leave the nest, except for the baby girl, Dakota, who’s hoping to get a good government job at the post office in Raleigh.

Yes, Yolanda’s life is the epitome of country and dull. Until her car breaks down on the very day that Danny Bailey moves to Shady Falls, and his chivalrous act saves her from being stranded. From their very first cup of coffee and slice of pie, Yolanda is hopeful that Danny will be the one to make her take her precious cookie back out of the jar.

But even though Danny seems like the perfect guy, he has a dark side. A secret so heinous, that he’s run away from his big city life in Baltimore, Maryland. To Shady Falls – a place everyone else, with good sense, is trying to escape.

Trouble

Loved this. It was real, especially with that house filled with lazy adults (which made me cringe). Yolanda is such a loving, caring and hard working mother. She is long overdue for a good man; I'm rooting for her and Danny. I'd love more on Dakota - the youngest sibling has more brain and drive than her two older siblings.
I appreciate the bonus read but i wish the rest of the series were free also.

Underline colorism?

I'm giving this book 2 stars due to several factors. While the theme of the book was good, I particularly hate cliff-hangers. As a Christian novel I didn't feel blessed or uplifted by the ending.
The main issue was the overwhelming reference to "good hair" and light skin tones. As we know there is an issue with black people not being accepted for who they are and what they naturally represent because its different from what society calls socially acceptable. The hair you have on your head, no matter what the texture is good hair. The skin tone you are blessed with, is beautiful. The fact that Coco was not bothered at the postal office because of darker skin and hair doesn't sit well with me coming from a Christian novel. The same with the darker sister stuck at home with two fatherless children while her lighter sister, whom she's jealous of, is making her way out of Shady Falls.
I hope by reading this novel it doesn't put an additional stigma on anyone who already feels some type way about their appearance. There are also several other references of self hate, but I will not divulge them all. As I type this I wish I gave it one star.

Excellent! I cannot wait for the next installment to this new series by Tiffany L warren. I have fallen in love with the people of Shady Falls especially Yolanda's family. The story packs suspense and romance. The book is a little different than Ms Warren's usual Christian novels. It's still a Christian novel but she writes it from a realistic point. Being that some of the characters curse, they small town country, a bit uncouth, not as educated and wealthy as I'm used to get characters being. However, it is a breath of fresh air. Like all of her characters they are relatable with a comedic flair. They are Christians with morals but have made some poor choices. I am waiting anxiously to see what happens with Yolanda and Danny, Dakota and Ethan. Curios to see how Tennessee handles real life.
