An elderly woman is burnt to death in the remote hamlet of Silver Bay. A young woman dies of an overdose on a notorious Holyhead estate. A drugs war is about to explode. Somebody knows but no one is talking. Kelly Morgan has a social conscience and a pile of regrets. She wants to help but knows she’ll never manage it alone. Her boss, Amanda Gold, cannot allow anything - not her divorce nor her daughter nor her affair with the boss - to cloud her thinking. Another fire, another death, and the flames lick closer to home. A threat shadows all their lives. A killer is out there, but one step ahead.
FALSE LIGHTS is the second novel in The Gold Detectives series based along the North Wales coast.
4.5* The second book in the Gold Detectives series finds DI Amanda Gold and her team; DS Dara Brennan, DS Kelly Morgan and DS Gethin Jones, dealing with a ruthless killer whose weapon of choice is fire.
Bridie Byrne, a novelist living on the southern tip of Holyhead Island, is researching the local tales of smugglers for her latest book. When a flash of light catches her eye one evening as she’s working at her computer, and thinking perhaps it’s poachers, she goes out to investigate. Regretting that decision fairly quickly, she’s on her way back home when she stumbles. Unfortunately for Bridie the person she trusts to help her has other ideas.
While Amanda and Dara investigate the devastating results of a fire in Silver Bay, Kelly is making enquiries, without much success, into the shooting of a teenager at the drug infested Maes Gwyn council estate. She finds more than she bargained for.
After a chilling opening chapter, the pace and suspense never slacken. Although Amanda is juggling her job and single motherhood, struggling with the ethics of her love interest, especially in the light of Dara and Kelly’s aborted relationship, is taking it’s toll, she doesn’t let her personal problems interfere with the job. Characters are well defined and developed, with their personal issues giving them authenticity. I like that a different character is having their turn at the forefront of the story.
Set on the beautiful island of Anglesey with vivid descriptions and the underlying sense of history, the gritty and well devised storyline has plenty twists that kept this reader guessing – all the way to the totally unexpected and excellent ending.
The second in Gillian Hamer's Gold Detectives series, False Lights is a riveting "read." I didn't actually read it, but I listened to it as an Audible Book and loved it. Great suspense, good characters. Gillian is described by some reviewers as "bringing Scandinavian style drama to the north coast of Wales" and you can easily see why. It is set in Anglesey and reminiscent of Camilla Lackberg's provincial crime series - another writer I also enjoy. Provincial town politics and problems, gritty rather than gracious, the suspense if well planned and amusing banter between the detectives lightens the sometimes dark story. Looking forward to book three!!!
Wrong place wrong time. Connecting the dots between people and places. While it strikes too close to home. Police work and detecting on the order if keystone Kops. And ends with a cliff hanger. I'm done.
A second great read from Gillian Hamer. Although it didn't captivate straight away, it built up and by the end, I was clinging on to every page trying to devour as much as a could. Can't wait to start the next book now.
