This was a collection of short stories. Two are quite good and the rest are ok. An assorted collection of Ultramarines stories. You also run the gamut of foes from chaos to the Orks. If this were a full story I'd take more time to speak of the various ins and outs. This being short stories, I'm not going to waste my time since this wasn't a really great collection nor terribly exciting. The story with the Kreig Death Korps operating with the Ultramarines was rather nice (and my favorite story) since I had heard so much of the Kreig troopers. Nothing bad here, just a collection of Ultramarines stories. It will make a nice addition to my Ultramarines Omnibus.

Collecting together stories about the boys in blue from five different authors, Legends of the Dark Millennium: Ultramarines features two novellas, prose versions of two audio dramas, and five further short stories. The emphasis is on named characters, with such Ultramarines luminaries as Marneus Calgar, Chaplain Cassius, Cato Sicarius, Torias Telion and Varro Tigurius shared out across four stories by Graham McNeill, two by Nick Kyme, and one each from Steve Lyons, Josh Reynolds and Gav Thorpe.

There’s a good variety of writing styles here, each story representative of its author’s style. They’re not going to change anyone’s opinions on these authors, but there should be something here for everyone.

Had to stop midway through.

Was trying to use this as a springboard into the W40k universe as I was always interested in it but it wasn't quite...gelling.

I went in with the understanding that these would be short stories but honestly? I didn't find them to read that way. They actually read more like...excerpts of short stories, if that makes sense.

A lot of them just sort of started in the middle of nowhere, then stopped at weird and random points where it felt like any sort of climax was left undone or after the climax, it'd peter on for a bit...then sort of stop randomly once I got the feeling there would be more story to be told.

Very odd.

There are some standout stories included, especially the last one. I'd recommend it if you already like the Blue Guys, but most of the stories can be summed up by:

- Ultramarines are fighting the bad guys
- Really big bad guy shows up
- Big thing blown up by Ultramarines because they believe in themselves/Emperor/discipline.
