In this third companion book, we learn a little more of the story through the eyes and perspective of Charlotte, one of Auggie’s classmates in Beecher Prep.
Last companion book, one hundred pages of pure tenderness. Not remotely as emotional as "The Julian Chapter" or "Pluto". No suffering this time, just something terribly sweet and innocent. Palacio, you surprised me yet again. I was expecting more pain and I was farewelled with the warmest hug. Goodbye, I'll miss you Wonder.

De las historias cortas debo decir que está fue la que menos me gustó.
No es que Charlotte no me caiga bien, es solo que la historia fue muy simple y superficial, no me reveló nada más allá de la lección de August y se centraba en cosas muy irrelevantes.
Esperaba más de este personaje por el peso que tuvo en el primer libro, aunque la forma de escribir de J.R. Palacio es preciosa, y por eso fue entretenido.
No es que Charlotte no me caiga bien, es solo que la historia fue muy simple y superficial, no me reveló nada más allá de la lección de August y se centraba en cosas muy irrelevantes.

Con Charlotte tiene la palabra culminan las historias derivadas de La Lección de August, aunque curiosamente esta es la historia donde menos tiene que ver con August. Aunque la historia es básicamente sobre la vida social de Charlotte en 5to grado, he soltado varias lagrimas en algunas paginas. Los relatos de Christopher y Charlotte nos hablan de la verdadera amistad.
Me hubiera encantado saber si en el futuro la amistad de Charlotte, Ximena y Summer continua. Se puede leer como libro independiente, aunque si quieren leer La lección de August no recomiendo que se empiece por este libro, contiene spoilers de Wonder.
Una lectura rápida, buena y amena. Me gusto que con esta historia terminaran los libros derivados en la Lección de August.

"I mean, I've been nice to Auggie," I (Charlotte) said, "but Summer was kind. That's like nice to the tenth power or something. Do you know what I mean?"
Charlotte is part of the group asked to welcome August into Beecher Prep. A standout student in fifth grade, Charlotte wants to be nice but also to remain neutral, not to attract any type of attention to herself. Its not an easy task as anything from choosing where to sit at lunch to whom she speaks to can alter the delicate social balance.
The final installment in the Wonder series, 'Shingaling' takes the reader back to Beecher Prep, to the difficult-to-navigate hallways and lunchroom of middle school. The focus of this novella is Charlotte, one of the kids asked to show Auggie around the school before class begins. While she is nice, she is nice enough. Charlotte strongly disapproves of the way Julian and the rest of the boys and girls of fifth grade treat Auggie and Jack but she does not dare to step up or say anything. See, she still wants the popular kids to like her, so she remains neutral. It would be easy to judge her but it would also be unfair because at some point or another we all have behaved that way. Charlotte does learn at the end though, that being kind is important. She learns from Summer, another girl in her grade who chose to sit with Auggie at lunch and be his friend. I truly hope that there are a lot of Summers out there right now, we need them. That is the common thread with all the 'Wonder' books, to be kind. I will say that out of all the books in the series, this was my least favorite but I am glad I read it. I believe the Wonder movie is coming out soon and I will be there watching (and probably crying too).

Completely irrelevant to the Wonder story. I'm disappointed.
Charlotte is one of the three kids who is asked to show Auggie around the school when he goes to visit the campus before the school year begins. She is polite and helpful but then just sort of fades away as the book goes on. She's not a friend, not an enemy ... just a nice kid who helped out when the principal asked her to.
Nothing that happens to Charlotte is relevant to the action of the novel in more than a superficial way. She knows about the Plague and the boy war and everything, but she is more focused on a dance she is learning with two other students. This is the story of their friendship, and -- there just is no power here.
Yeah, I love Wonder too. But if this - Shingaling - if this were a short story on its own, would it stand up? No.
I respect Palacio's worldbuilding and multiple perspectives, but she can't go on and tell everybody's story for that year.
The only remaining story I want to hear is Mr. Browne's -- that would be a great tale, to see how this inspirational teacher dealt with this situation through the year, how he modified his lessons to incorporate more Auggie and to teach the kids tolerance, how he selected his precepts.
I doubt I'll buy any more of these peripheries unless she writes one for that teacher - and I sincerely hope she does.

This is the third Wonder "short" Story. The book was about Auggie's first year of school and what follows in the beginning of the next year through the perspective of reader-favorite Charlotte. This book barely circled and talked about Auggie (the book Wonder's main character). This book was truly about Charlotte and what was going on in her life.

Charlotte is my favourite !!

This was my absolute favorite section in Auggie and Me! In Wonder, Auggie is fighting battles against bullying and never had time to show other big battles people were fighting in their lives. But in “Shingaling” you see that Charlotte is fighting her own battle for a social group and for friends at school. You would have never thought Wonder and Shingaling happened at the same time; it’s almost like a separate book by itself (other than the characters and “boy war”). I thought this book was very touching and mainly something that a lot of people could relate to.

Finally, once the giggles had passed and it got quiet again, Ximena, started singing really softly in the dark. At first, I didn't even realize what she was singing, she was singing so quietly.
No-no, no, no-no, no-no no-no
Then Summer took up the song.

Finally, I realized what we were singing and sang:
No-no, no, no-no, no-no no-no!
Then we all started whisper-singing together.
Nobody can do the shingaling
Like I do...

Nobody can do boogaloo

We were lying on our backs side by side as we sang, and made our arms and hands dance in sync above our heads. And we sang the whole song, from beginning to end, as quietly as if we were praying in church.
Stop it! Why am I crying? Why did that last section bring tears to my eyes? Why??
I think it was just an accumulation of all of the wonderful parts of this story. The depth of the characters. The shifts in friendships as we grow older, for better and for worse.
Charlotte is also a very interesting character. She says it herself near the end: she's "nice," but not always "kind." She stays neutral in many situations, doesn't get involved even when she knows bad things will happen, and she tends to act a bit differently around teachers than her peers. She makes for a fascinating character.
Honestly, I can almost entirely forget that this is part of the Wonder series. Auggie is in this story, but he's sort of sidelined to make room for Charlotte. And the story is still beautiful. Every one of these little side stories focuses so well on other characters. I adore them.
And my goodness, this one was my favorite. 5/5 stars.

"It's not enough to be friendly. You have to be a friend."
Charlotte is barely mentioned a few times in Wonder's story, but I knew there was more to say about her. In "Shingaling", we learn how Charlotte experienced Auggie's arrival, how the first year of middle school went for her and we realise she is also friends with the lovely Summer, so she also appears a lot in this nice short book.
Four stars!

I liked this one the most out of all the short stories/novellas. It's just so cute to see Charlotte's evolution throughout the year, how she started from being the nice-girl wannabe to being an actual nice, kind, considerate friend to everyone.
However, I'm so sad I'm done. Looking forward to future novellas like this one.

In "Wonder", "The Julian Chapter" and "Pluto", we learn about the boys in the fifth grade, their relationships, and how they change and grow in these relationships as the school-year progresses. This book, "Shingaling" is not a story about Auggie; it is about the girls in Auggie's class. We see the clicks these girls form, their preconceived ideas about some of the other girls in the class, and how many of them learn to look beyond those preconceived ideas to form new friendships or rekindle old friendships. I was expecting this novella to be Charlotte's point of view on Auggie so I was pleasantly surprised to learn that we see the forming of friendships, being nice, and being kind from the girls' POV. This was an enjoyable (and fast) read!

There are some actions or ideas that are needed to be contemplated first before doing, but being kind isn't one of those. Just a fine amount of goodness to make one's day fancy! On the side note, I am hoping that R.J. Palacio will soon come up with a fresh concept apart from narrating the stories of the characters from Wonder.

This was okay, I quite liked it, but it had way too much teenage drama for my taste. I'm glad I'm finally done with all the Wonder novellas. I planned to read them right after finishing the main book (I loved that book), but I always found myself starting some other book...

"God bless America"
It's a sweet story, too, beside The Julian Chapter and Pluto.
When i was reading Wonder and watch the Movie, the image of Charlotte (Elle Mckinnon) appeared in my head. Her look was different from this book decribed, but her genitive was still like what i captured - She's nice but not kind enough!
But while this journey, glad to know more about the girls drama, she's becoming truely kind, more to Auggie but also her other "friend friends"
I almost love the three of girls - Charlotte, Summer, Ximena when they're together.

I really enjoyed this story! Summer, my favorite character from Wonder, plays a prominent part in this story. I am an adult man, but this story allowed me to see what middle school would be like through the eyes of a young girl with all the associated drama. It's a story about friendships and how they are not always what we expect. I thought it rang true. I can't wait for my two daughters to read this story. I know they will enjoy it as well.

I definitely recommend this book because although the book is in the perspective of Charlotte the setting was the same but the whole story was on the girls side of thing in Breacher Prep. One thing I like is seeing everybody's mind and reading about what they do and how they think at certain situations. Overall I recommend this book because it is a little different to the wonder story with the only similarity being the setting.

RJ Palacio has done it again! After reading this I had both my daughters 9age 9 & 10) sit down and read it as well. Wonderful story for tween girls, how to be a good friend, expectations and misperceptions of classmates. Many lessons in this quick read.

This was disappointing.
I didn't enjoy the story at all. I didn't care about these characters' life-styles.
The 2 stars are for Summer and Charlotte whom I loved in the original Wonder story.

Durante a leitura do conto, fui ao cinema ver a adaptação do livro e foi engraçado ter uma cara para a Charlotte! Este conto já é um pouco maior, já é mesmo uma ''novella'' mas lê-se muito bem também, adorei o mistério em volta do Gordy Johnsson.

Even though I think that Ms Palacio should consider writing an entirely new story instead of spinning off more and more stories riding on the coat tails of Wonder, I can't deny that I love returning to the familiar setting at Beecher Prep School with the various characters in Auggie's life. This is Charlotte's story; she was part of Auggie's "Welcome Committee" organised by Mr Tushman at the beginning of grade 5. Charlotte is seen by most (including this reader) as a goody two-shoes; basically a plain Jane with great grades, and it's interesting to read that this is what she is most anxious about (other people's opinions about her being a bit dull and swatty).
Shingaling gets you into the hearts and minds of tween girls, and at times it's a stark reminder of how conniving and cliquey girls - of any age - can be, but of course good triumphs over evil, and the overall message of Wonder " wherever you are, whenever you can, you should try to act a little kinder than is necessary" is emphasised once again.
Whilst Auggie gets a few honorary mentions in Shingaling, I'd say that this short story has actually very little to do with him and his personal struggles and is all about the drama that goes on between teen/tween girls.

Ser amable es el primer paso para ser bueno.
Bueno, bueno, pues la verdad es que el libro es bastante entretenido y se lee en nada, como todos los de R.J. pero como dije en el de Julian, igual y ese era un poco necesario en la historia y conocer más del chico que molestaba a August y todo, pero en este libro de Charlotte creo que no aporta nada, de verdad, nada a la historia, podría ser un libro completamente diferente hablando de Charlotte y listo, no tiene casi nada que ver con La lección de August, se le menciona unas cuantas veces y ya, es más un libro sobre Charlotte lejos de August, me gustó, si, pero creo que es un libro innecesario, en fin, se los recomiendo si son fans de La lección de August, tendrán un momento agradable leyéndolo.

You would think I'd be tired of all these Wonder novellas floating around but I'm not. Shingaling is a strong addition to the series focusing on one of Auggie's classmates, Charlotte. We get a female's perspective on things that have transpired that faithful fifth year in Beecher Prep.
In hindsight, it would probably have been better to categorize these stories under Beecher Prep since everyone (including the teachers) seemed to have a fascinating backstory.
A lesson that stood out to me in this one was that it's one thing to be nice, it's another to be kind.

This was a very realistic story. I enjoyed the insight about friendship and being judgmental (even on a subconscious level).
There's were my favorite quotes:
-And all that wondering got me wondering even more!
-If you want to be a star, you have to be willing to work harder than everyone else to achieve your goals and dreams! The way I see it, a dream is like a drawing in your head that comes to life. You have to imagine it first. Then you have to work extremely hard to make it come true.
-One of the things I miss the most about being a little kid is that when you’re little, all the movies you watch have happy endings. Dorothy goes back to Kansas. Charlie gets the chocolate factory. Edmund redeems himself. I like that. I like happy endings. But, as you get older, you start seeing that sometimes stories don’t have happy endings. Sometimes they even have sad endings. Of course, that makes for more interesting storytelling , because you don’t know what’s going to happen. But it’s also kind of scary.
