I love Jessica's books, this is the second book I read that she's written. I always find myself getting so caught up between the pages and forgetting about real life when I read her books. Her writing style and the type of story just captivates me.
"If I haven't said it before, then I will say it now. I am DONE with men. Human OR Feline. Done!" Imagine yourself ever saying this, ever!! What catches my attention the most is "feline". Who in their right mind will end up cuddling a feline man?? Even though they might be soft and furry, but that's not the point. Emma found herself in a very strange predicament. Staying in a town where supernatural knocks on your door, and leaving life as you know it in turmoil. Roxsin (Sin) is the main reason that Emma's life is in turmoil. He has one mission , and that's to find the last item on the scroll that his brother, Zander, has before Zander himself gets it and creates an evil army. And of course to release the soul of his love, Gabriella, the love of his life that Zander took without thinking twice. Emma and Sin embarks on this mission to find the last item, Sin is waving Emma as bait for Zander, in order for him to get the scroll. But Sin got more than he bargained for, and Emma found out that she also has a skeleton in the family closet.
If you're a fan of shape shifters, wizards and anything paranormal then you would love this book. It's a novella, but even though it's short, you still find yourself lost in time.
I don't usually find myself reading Paranormal books all that often, I do enjoy reading them though. They're just not hugely popular right now so finding a good one sometimes can be hard. I like to consider myself a big J.D. Hollyfield fan, I've only known of her work for like a few months but I love all of her books. So I had to give this book a try and of course it's just as great as her other books, the writing is superb, the story flows smoothly, and the new supernatural world she creates is easy to get lost in. Roxsin (Sin) and Emma are great together, he's a strong, sexy alpha male shifter, and she's a cutesy sexy sassy female. I loved their banter with each other, the humor in the story was an added bonus its not common in other PNR books. There's humor, suspense, action, and love all weaved together into this story and you wont be sad that you tried it out. It's a lighthearted feel good paranormal romance and a perfect weekend read as it's a short story novella but packed with lots and lots of story.
She learned how it felt to be abandoned. He lives with the suffering of death. Together will they learn what new beginnings mean?

There has always been two sides to every child’s life and some are difficult to bear, incredibly difficult to listen, while others have had the chance to know what family and love mean and the influence it has on them. Emma was the unlucky child, one that grew to know coldness, darkness and abandonment, but more so that love only brings you pain and heartache. Roxsin has known love, the tender touch of a hand on the cheek and eyes that sparkle when the other walks into a room, but it was cruelly ripped out of his hands by jealousy and envy. There is no question in my mind why J.D. Hollyfield has managed to fully captivate my attention from beginning to end. Not only do we return to Woodland Creek, the same mysterious town we found ourselves in Tia Louise’s One Insatiable, but when shifters and attraction collide, I simply can’t stop myself from reading cover to cover. As a standalone in a boxed set of 30 novels with 30 novels from the Woodland Creek series, J.D. Hollyfield’s Sinful Instincts is absolutely worth the read. . **Received a copy in exchange for an honest review. Read and reviewed by Kathleen for Alpha Book Club**
"She is my destiny. She is the one my body demands.”
Sinful Instincts is Author J. D. Hollyfield's contribution to the Woodland Creek series. It is an interesting take on a shifter story and couples mystery and danger with snark and sexy times.
"Every end he speaks is a weapon to my heart. Every word he conveys, I feel deep in my soul.”
Poor Emma. Her life pretty much sucks. She moved to Woodland Creek under a guise, and now finds herself alone and without anyone to support her emotionally. Roxsin is a hot as sin, out of this world man who is on quest for revenge to right the wrongs that have been done to himself and others. A forced meeting brings these two together, and we watch as they fight their own primal and basic instincts, while trying not to lose their objectives in the process.
"I've never felt like this. The pull, the urge to take someone and make them completely mine."
Written in dual points of view, Sinful Instincts was sassy and sexy ride through shifterville. I never knew what would come from Emma’s next. It wasn’t that she didn’t have a filter, but Author J. D. Hollyfield offered up her unfiltered thoughts that made me squirm with delight and anticipation. Reading as Roxsin battled with his protective nature and desire for redemption made me so nervous. I kept saying to myself, “Pick the girl. PICK THE GIRL”. The choices they both made throughout the story kept me on my toes and led to a great ending.
"Your scent is like a drug for me. Every emotion, every release, it's like an aphrodisiac I want to shoot into my veins. So addictive, that if I took you all in, it would bring me to my knees."
I was given this book for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.

Oh! What a story! If you like shape shifters and lots of drama and excitement, you will love this book!

This book has a lot of action to keep you enthralled. I am looking forward to reading more from this author!
Just finished Sinful Instincts ..This book was sinful because well sin was hot and a badass..Never really read any paranormal books its not my cup of tea , but this book took the cake it was really great..I enjoyed it very much.. Emma was very sassy and spoke her mind. I loved that it has humor , action and romance .
This is the first book by J.D. Hollyfiend I have read and I really liked it. I picked it up because it was part of the Woodland Creek collection. Sin is part leopard shifter. He never much cared for his beast half. That only gets worse when the woman he loves is killed by his half-brother. For the last five years he has been on a mission of revenge. His mission leads him to Woodland creek to a girl named Emma. He is tracking his half-brother and saves Emma from being attacked by his half-brother. However, when his instincts are to protect this girl rather than take his chance to kill his half-brother Sin releases how much Emma looks like the woman he is trying to avenge. Emma hasn’t had to the best life. She was a foster child, then moved to Woodland creek by her ex who took off with all her money after a week. Now she has a crazy “shifter” after her and another half “shifter” who wants to use her as bait to draw out this other shifter. She has no idea that shifter, fae, or wizards even existed. Now she is in the middle of all this. Not to mention how Sin makes her feel. Sin is no better. He feels the pull towards Emma however he is on a mission and doesn’t want to be distracted. However, he is hot and cold with Emma which makes it harder on her. In the end Sin with have a choice to make and it won’t be an easy one. I loved this book so much. I felt for Emma she doesn’t have a clue about the supernatural beings. She is pulled into this world that she has no clue about. Then she is forced to deal with Sin and his mood swings. I have loved all the books in the woodland creek collection. I look forward to reading more books by J.D. Hollyfiend in the future.
DNF. The hero is seeking revenge for his dead girlfriend and he is going to use the heroine to do it. And she is going to let him, because his story is sooo plausible and of course she is in lust with him so anything goes. He acts like a total A-hole towards her, she takes it (with occasional protest) and still goes with his plan to be a bait for a monster. Of course, as story developes that could change but I'm done. Weak-willed heroine and self-involved hero = not to my taste.
The premise of the story is unique. Yes there are the usual tropes of the heroine being out of foster homes and the hero being tortured by guilt. But the combination of Emma and Roxsin has some unusual twists. It was extremely enhanced by the fact that the grammar was excellent. I’m old school and find poor grammar detracts from even very interesting stories. I give this one five stars.
An interesting paranormal tale! I enjoyed it. I liked the a$$hole side Sin he was HOT!! Emma that poor thing I felt sorry for her she was clueless to the world she was thrust into. The end and the epilogue made me smile and warmed my heart. So sweet!
Sinful Instincts by J.D. Hollyfield is, unfortunately, a standalone novel that left me wanting so much more! The book was full of action from the start and I couldn't put it down!
Roxsin, “Sin”, has vowed to take revenge on his half-brother, Zander, who has just murdered Sin's love Gabriella. Sin, who is half shapeshifter, spends the next five years tracking Zander, who is a full-blood shifter, trying to keep him from carrying out his sinister plan to gain power. Sin finally gets the chance to kill Zander in a dark alleyway in the small town of Woodland Creek, but he would never have anticipated saving the life of a woman who looks strikingly similar to his lost love instead. “Becoming angrier at the unfamiliar sensations, I force myself to glance down just as she looks up and the vision almost stops my heart. “It can't be,” I utter gravelly. My intake of breath is loud, my gaze boring into hers. Eyes wide, I stare into a face the spitting image of Gabriella. It can't be. How is this possible?”
Emma Waters has just moved to Woodland Creek, Indiana from Arizona with her now ex-boyfriend. She had a rough childhood growing up in the foster system, and caved when her boyfriend who “loved her” asked her to move, even though she had a great job, great apartment, and even a great roommate. Now after three weeks in Woodland Creek, Emma has a night out drinking and speed dating that ends in an almost deadly way. She was attacked by a terrifying creature, but her life was saved by a hot, buff, and extremely naked man. “I fight to break free from my attacker's hold, but his body has me pinned so tightly it's useless. I open my eyes to beg once more for my life, but I am stunned into silence by the face so close to mine. I can feel his breath – his human breath. He's human? “What the...” I pause. “Who are you?” The silky dark voice rolls past the plump lips of this beastly man. He doesn't move away or give me room to breathe. His eyes stay connected to mine, burning a hole of beauty and anger into my vision. “I'm... I'm Emma... My name is Emma,” I stutter. He looks at me, still angry but semi-confused. “Emma what? What are you Emma?” “Umm... just Emma,” I reply.”
After Sin saves Emma and takes her home, he is unable to deny the strange bond and attraction he has to her. He decides he will use Emma as bait to lure Zander and finally rid everyone of him and his evil plan. However, Sin's feelings for Emma become stronger even though he continues to fight something he can't help but feel, and Emma can't help but want Sin even though his emotions are all over the place. “I fought myself from going to her. I need to stay away. I need to deny what I felt at the first touch of her. Because of it all came to a head with the realization of what was happening, then it would mean I have been chasing a ghost the past five years. Gabriella was my soul mate. She was the one no matter how hard I fought would have been my love for a lifetime. But if that were the case, then why is my body tingling with the need to bond?” “Without time to acknowledge, Sin advances from his sitting position across from me and is suddenly lifting me from my chair, pinning me to the counter. “It's real Emma. You saw it with your own eyes last night. The sooner you accept it, the sooner we can move forward with my plan.” His body is brushing against mine as he speaks to me. My skin prickles from the touch of his fingers that are resting on each side of my hips. God, why can't I act like a normal person and flip out? I mean, he just told me that not only did a paranormal creature attack me last night but he's also one, and he I am standing with my insides knotting and my legs clenching together. Get it together, sister.”
The unending roller coaster of excitement in this book makes it such an amazing read! You will fall in love with Sin, and completely relate with Emma. There is a ton of humor to keep you laughing, and enough emotion to make this an incredible love story. I would recommend this book 10 times out of 10! I love it, and can only hope that there will one day be more installments featuring these great characters! Definitely read this book! You won't regret it!
"If I haven't said it before, then I will say it now. I am DONE with men. Human OR Feline. Done!"
Woodland Creek. Emma hates everything about this town. The whole reason for her being there and she just wants to get out of there as soon as she possibly can. There's plenty going on in this town than Emma knows but she's about to find out. Roxsin is in this town for one reason and one reason only; Revenge. He is willing to sacrifice ANYTHING to get the revenge he's chased for long. When he comes to Woodland Creek he gets more than revenge.
Emma was tired with the way her life was and even a little broken from what had got her to this point. But I loved her! She's sassy and freaking hilarious. When she's thrust into the paranormal world she's not in full denial and she's not totally accepting it either which brings her sass and humor out in full force and is a great addition to the story.
"Right, a shifter. And I'm princess fucking Leia. I need more specifics here pal."
Oh, Sin. Protective and loyal But it was a bit of an ass move when he's determined to hold onto his old feelings and trying to deny the feelings he had in the present when his actions were clearly different but I loved him so much so this didn't turn me against him, I just was pissed at him for a bit. He may have been moody but damn was he alpha and sexy as fuck! And he stays loyal to the end and when he comes to his senses it's all forgiven!
"...I've returned to claim what's mine," he growls "And since I know there is no way you will be denying me, that means I'm here to stay, ... And let me warn you, Emma, if you try to deny me, I will only remind you how you are already mine and that decision has already been made. You're mine, Emma."
When we start the story, it's building up to a moment from the get go so there's not angst. It's not over the top or silly which is always a plus for me. There's great banter and sexy between them. It was a great story and melded altogether brilliantly. Right now Paranormal is what I read the most but Emma's twist isn't something I've read before and I loved it! It literally made my eyes bulge out of my head! so freaking good! I loved it and I hope J.D. writes more paranormal in the future! :-)
Oh and I've got to mention the wizard, he was hilarious and made me giggle! Especially at the end!
Having found his soul mate, half-shifter Sin wanted to protect her - even from himself, so refused to mate with her - even though it was the only thing he could think of......
The night he couldn't hold back any more.......his brother -well, half brother - decided to pay him a visit.....they fought. He was distracted, and his brother killed his soul mate...ingesting her soul and her light. Sin was broken.
He vowed to spend the rest of his life tracking him until he could finally kill him and put his soul mates soul at rest.
But....things aren't that clear.
His brother Xander has stumbled upon an ancient spell that if completed would render him immortal. And hes nearly finished. Hes missing one last piece. Finally catching up with him, Sin rescues a woman, Emma that he was about to feast on, and in a split moment decision chose to save her, rather than give chase to Xander.
Emma is immediately struck by his extreme...there's no other way to put this...hotness. And even Sin cannot deny that there is something about her that is strangely calling to him.
We are given both Emma and Sin's views in this book - i liked that, but at the same time, you're sitting very frustrated that you cant scream at them what they both need to hear!
Emma is used to being alone, and Sin is incredibly hot and very rude and demanding when he declares she is - no argument - going to help him kill Xander because he saved her. He clearly states that he has no interest in her. At all. None. Even if his body is telling him different. Emma feels it, but plays him at his own game..... But will she push too hard? Will she realise what she actually is? Why she has these terrifying nightmares? What her role in Sins life actually is......
Sin is so fixated on saving his loves soul, and destroying his full blooded brother, does he miss whats right in front of him? Whats alive and right there? What hes been searching for, and had been destined for all this time?
There are two ways this could end.....each way someone close to Sin is going to die......each way someone close to sin will have their soul set free....
But whose....?
Another great read from Woodland Creek. This one is sizzingly hot, great characters and a storyline with a slight twist! Good read!
This book was a perfect example of just sit back and enjoy the ride. Following the were-leopard Roxsin, or "Sin", it takes you on a fast-paced journey through his quest to prevent his evil half brother from world domination. Maybe not quite that dramatic, but that's the gist. Along the way, grouchy half brother is killing innocents and collecting whatever it is that makes them special in a sort of macabre scavenger hunt for power. This steps on nice guy Sin's toes because, one, he's a good guy, and two, this has so far included two women he has cared about.
Poor Emma has been jilted after moving to a new town with her sleaze bag boyfriend. She's a pretty badass character, I had no problem following a few days in her life. She fights back, she loves hard, and she has spunk. The sparks between her and Sin were HOT, and even if it was a little instalove, it legitimizes very well in the end.
It didn't seem to be as snarky on the surface, deep on the inside, as I have come to expect from J.D. Hollyfield's works, but it was also a different genre, so having a slightly different tone kept me on my toes. Not that it was lacking. It was definitely good, just not quite shout from the rooftops amazing. Fast-paced, with some twists and turns for good measure, it's an all around a good ride. I do have a soft spot for a good shifter book, and this hit it perfectly. ~ George, 3.5 stars
J.D. Hollyfield sums up how I feel about Sinful Instincts right in the book itself...
"God, this is awesome. Like a kid's first trip to the toy store awesome."
Now, I know you're probably wondering why I only gave 4 stars is it's that awesome. I am really picky about my PNR, so understand, 4 stars is AWESOME.
I love reading Ms. Hollyfield's work and have for a while now, so when I hear she branched out into one of my favorite sub-genres I jumped at the chance to read it. I. Was. Not. Disappointed.
The classic wit, humor, sexiness, heart-wrenching moments, and hot-as-sin leading man that we have come to expect from this author is all packed into this great shifter read. The heroine is tough, slightly broken, hard-on-the-outside-soft-on-the-inside perfect, and curses like a f*ing sailor. So, in other words, she rocks. J.D. hit the proverbial PNR-leading-man-nail-on-the-head with Sin. He is an addicting mix of focus, carnal instinct, angst, and badass-sexy.
The story-line was not only interesting, but well delivered and engaging. The peripheral characters are amazing and add just the right amount of zing! and suspense. I absolutely 100% recommend this for a fun read you will probably devour in one sitting.
It's been quite a while since I read a paranormal book and man, Sinful Instincts totally hit the spot! It has everything I love: danger, magic, a strong, sassy heroine, and a possessive alpha male! It was an awesome read and I loooooved it!!
Emma and Sin were fun characters, I mean sometimes I wanted to smack them upside the head and they occasionally made me roll my eyes and shake my head, but I enjoyed reading about them nevertheless! I loved Emma's personality - she just had this kind of dry, sarcastic tone at times, at least it felt that way to me anyway, that amused me and I loved her sassy fighting with Sin. And oh my gosh, Sin, don't even get me started on him! Let's just say that he lives up to his name and when he's not being a jerk that you want smack, he's being a HOT, protective, possessive, growly alpha that will have you melting and shivering!
Sinful Instincts is a fast, short, steamy read that will leave you nice and content once you finish it. It will make your heart ache and make you smile, chuckle, and yell. It was just a fantastic read and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Sinful Instincts is a standalone, it's told from Emma and Sin's POV, and they have an awesome HEA ending!
This is the third book I've read in the series and it was the best of the trio read so far, I had high hopes at the start, but then struggled to the end.
The plot had me on a rollercoaster between trying to understand Roxsin and give Emma the grins her banter warranted. Sadly, I just couldn't connect with either character - at times, Sin's voice was too stilted and melodramatic and Emma's was full of sass and wannabe sarcasm.......was this being written by the one author??
The storyline had too much going on in it, it got messy and my attention waned...even the twist in the story was so out there I wanted to know what the author was smoking because I want some......
After all the buildup, the final battle between the brothers was a complete letdown. I don't understand why there was so many pages dedicated to Emma's recovery and I just eyerolled my way through Sin's explanation of his absence..... seriously???
It does finish on a HFN, with a fluffy epilogue, apart from the last paragraph...... was I meant to laugh???
What an introduction to an author, "Sinful Instincts" was the first book I've read by J.D. Hollyfield, not knowing what I was in for I started this book, I was soon drawn into the story. I was really intrigued with how this was going to end. "Sinful Instincts" is J.D.'s installment for the "Woodland Creek" collection, a collaboration of 30 authors all writing about 1 little town in Indiana USA, I was intrigued with the concept behind this collection.
Once I'd started to read, I was quickly drawn into the story of Emma, Sin & Xander.... With her rough upbringing Emma finds herself in love & talked into moving away from friends, only to be left soon after. Leaving the local pub after a night out with friends, Emma is attacked. After vowing to take vengeance upon his mates killer, Sin has arrived in Woodland Creek on the trial of his brother, when he hears a scream....
I think I need to read more from J.D. Hollyfield. I can't wait to read what the others have written for the "Woodland Creek" collection.
This is my first venture into the world of shifter novels. Not knowing what to expect,I went into the story with an open mind. I must say that I was more than pleasantly surprised. Ms. Hollyfield did an amazing job of writing a fantasy novel that is based enough in reality to keep this contemporary romance lover turning pages as fast as I could. Her usual humor in writing came through in Emma's inner dialogue. It had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion. Along with the humor, Sinful Instincts had just the right combination of action, suspense and romance. As this novel is a part of the Woodlands Creek anthology of shifter novels, I am looking forward to reading more of the stories by some of the other amazing authors featured in this compilation.
"How can life be so unfair? How can I live a life so lonely to find the one who finally made me whole, just to be the one to tear me apart?"
So yay for an another book by one of my favorite authors named J.D Hollyfield. I fell in love with her books after reading her first novel Life in a Rut. I just love how she puts humor in a contemporary romance story.
For the Sinful Instincts well its not really my cup of tea since I'm avoiding paranormal books because of my over creative brain that sends me night mares if I read books like that. This is a new genre for the author and just like her other books I also loved it! I can relate to the characters as always and it just made me want to read the other books of Woodland Creek Series!
The thing is that they swear a lot. I mean tons for me. That is what I don't like. They can say for all they want but I hate that they swear a lot like they can't live without it. But overall it is written well and I look forward for more developments. Kudos to the author!
I'm going to start out by saying I am not a HUGE paranormal fan, but I do read it occasionally. Sinful Instincts jumps right in with both feet (or paws if you prefer) and takes off running! This is a very fast paced, never a dull moment read. If you like paranormal (and maybe even if you don't) you will enjoy the fast paced action in this book, as well as the "love" story. Whether you like shifters, wizards, mermaids, witches, fairies, this book has a little bit of everything, although very heavy on the shifters. J.D. does a great job writing the story and her flawless writing style are extreme pluses! She also made me laugh out loud a few times which can be hard to do, especially given the serious tone of this book. I highly recommend it!!!!
I Received an Arc for a Honest Review. I absolutely love Sinful Instincts. Sinful Instincts is a absolutely sexy heartwarming story. I love Roxsin and Emma Story. I Love that Roxsin and Emma have this instant connection with each other. I Love how Roxsin is With Emma you can tell that care about her a lot. I Love that Emma doesn't take anything from anybody she won't let anyone tell her what to do. I Felt a connection with Emma and Roxsin. When I was reading Sinful Instincts I felt like like I was with Roxsin and Emma in the story. Once I started reading Sinful Instincts I was hooked. I couldn't put it down. I definitely recommend that everyone should read this. You won't be disappointed once you start reading Sinful Instincts. I can't wait to read more from J.D. Hollyfield.
ARC RECEIVED FOR AN HONEST REVIEW JD Holyfield has written an erotic paranormal book that I couldn’t put down. I am not usually a paranormal girl, but this book was engrossing from the start. Sin (Roxsin) is avenging the killing/soul taking of his love Gabriella from his vengeful half-brother Xander. Fast forward 5 years and Sin is on the trail of Xander, who is on a quest for immortality. Xander finds Emma and forces her into a scenario near identical to Gabriella and Sin comes to her rescue. Once Sin touches Emma he knows things will not be the same. He wants to keep Emma safe, but there is more to each of them than either of them know! Some of Emma’s inner dialog had me laughing out loud! This is a well rounded story, and I loved it from start to finish!
I really liked reading Sinful Instincts by J.D. Hollyfield. This was a good paranormal romance read. Sinful Instincts is filled with humor, action and sassy characters which makes a good paranormal book. It was one of those books that you love from the beginning and can't wait to see what happens next this book will keep you entertained from the start. Roxsin is on the hunt for a killer who killed his wife. He is sexy as sin and is wanting revenge badly. Emma Watters is a former foster child who grew up on the wrong side of the system. She wants to belong to someone who will take care and lover her. When she meets Roxsin things don't go well at first but then the chemistry starts getting hot and sexy.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I am not really a big fan of paranormal books, but I am so glad that I read this one. This book is great! J.D. Hollyfield is such a talented writer that I couldn't put this book down.
I really like Emma. She has had a rough life and really deserves love and happiness. Instead, she is alone and caught in the middle of a quest for revenge. Roxsin (Sin) is out for revenge but saves Emma from a life or death situation. Sin is hot and he and Emma together are combustible. There is a mystery, secrets, and a lot of action.
This is the first paranormal book I have read since my post-Twilight phase many years ago, and pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Sinful Instincts had the perfect combination of angst, sizzle, and humor. "Your scent is like a drug for me. Every emotion, every release, it's like an aphrodisiac I want to shoot into my veins. So addictive, that if I took you all in, it would bring me to my knees."
This book! This cover! This author! I love love love her books - she is witty, and brilliant with her words! I was so excited to hear she was writing a paranormal romance, as I am completely obsessed with PNR! She didn't disappoint! I love Emma and Roxsin's banter back and forth, and their ability to ground each other. Roxsin comes to Woodland Creek seeking revenge, but he gets so much more than he bargained for when he meets Emma. You will laugh - a lot. I love how J.D. Hollyfield puts such a humorous twist into her stories. Pick this one up - you will love it!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
