Chelsea Fergusson, daughter of the impoverished Earl of Dumfries, is a desperate young lady with an indecent plan to get out of an unwanted marriage to an old lecher by losing her virginity to London's most infamous libertine, Sinjin St.John, Duke of Seth, “the Saint.”

Sinjin, sworn bachelor, sexy rogue and bedder of beautiful women, was sure nothing could surprise him. That is until he stepped into his carriage one evening and found it already occupied…

Chelsea tempted him with a sinful offer.

Sinjin adamantly, albeit politely refused. She was a young unmarried maiden, too dangerous for a man who'd vowed never to wed. No matter how luscious the prize, he wasn't reckless enough to be entrapped by the tantalizing minx.

Can the spirited young beauty change his mind?

And it all began rather serendipitously. Long ago, as they say, in another time, when fast food hadn't reached our area and the only shopping was what the feed mill offered, I was reading a book that annoyed me .

My husband was lying beside me in bed, watching TV. Turning to him, I sort of petulantly said, "How the hell did this book get published?"

"If you think you're so smart," he replied, with one eye still on the TV, "why don't you write a book?"

So I did. And very badly.

I've since learned how to do, he said, she said, and a great variety of other adverb heavy, sometimes lengthy explanations of why my characters are saying what they're saying, along with finally coming to an understanding of what things like POV means. Point of View for you non-writers}.

Although, I still don't fully comprehend why it matters if you switch POV and I cavalierly disregard it as much as possible. So while my technical skills have hopefully improved, what hasn't changed is my great joy in writing. There's as much pleasure today in listening to my characters talk while I type as fast as I can, as there was the first time I put dialogue to paper--in long-hand, then, in my leather bound sketch-book.

★★★★★! St. John-Duras series, book 1 of 5. Epic saga! Top-10 hero, larger-than-life Sinjin St. John, Duke of Seth fights matrimony with dire consequences!

The St John-Duras series takes us all across Europe introducing us to the St. John and Duras families. Book 1 starts off with Sinjin St. John, the Duke of Seth one of the most provoking alpha heroes – ever!!! Book 3 in series then continues with the Duras family. General Andre Duras was a side character in book 2 and he is also a very strong, memorable hero.

Susan Johnson aka C.C. Gibbs has different publishers in the US and UK, hence the different titles and covers.

These are stand-alones, but most enjoyed if read in order:
Book 1: (Year 1787)
Sinful (US) / Sinful Dreams (UK)
Book 2: (Year 1800)
Wicked (US) / Wicked Fascination (UK)
Book 3: (Year 1799)
Taboo (US) / The Sweetest Taboo (UK)
Book 4: (Year 1825)

Book 5: (Year 1851)

Unforgettable is the word that comes to mind as this story has stayed with like no other. Much thanks to Sinjin St. John, Duke of Seth. He is one of those heroes that you will either love or hate or both, but I doubt he will leave you indifferent! He is a beyond handsome, rich, sexy, elusive and unattainable playboy. As a matter of fact he is the most non-committal hero I have ever come across. And I love him. I might not have liked all his actions, but he captivated me!

Year 1787 and young Scottish beauty Chelsea Fergusson, in hopes of escaping marriage to a lecherous old man, asks Sinjin St. John, Duke of Seth to take her maidenhead. He turns her down. But a determined Chelsea sneaks into his home and a drunken Sinjin thinking it’s one of the prostitutes attending a gambling party deflowers Chelsea.

And so a very tumultuous relationship begins with Sinjin fighting any type of attachment and his feelings every step of the way. There are reasons for his commitment phobia and in his defense I will say that Chelsea instigated some and her family did not exactly make matters easier. Brace yourself their story is a bumpy ride!

Sinjin and Chelsea will take us all across Great Britain and on a dangerous detour into Africa.

Spellbinding story-telling! Interesting and slightly controversial plot! An against-all-odds love story! The most non-committal, larger-than-life hero! I will never forget this story nor Sinjin St. John, Duke of Seth! Epic read!

"She was sheer unadulterated sexuality~like a pagan rite of spring."

Sinful is my first Historical Romance read EVER! Diving in, I didn't quite know what to expect! Sinjin certainly did not disappoint! Sinful is set in the United Kingdom in 1787. So jump into your time machine and get ready for horse races, horse breeding, British Royal Society, parties, carriage rides, harems, kidnapping, sea voyages, duels, and indiscretion at it's finest.
description
"I'll be a spinster and wear mucking boots and smoke a pipe with the stable lads. And stay with my horses."-Chelsea

Chelsea Fergusson is doomed. As the daughter of the Earl of Dumfries, she is destined to be married off before her 18th birthday. However, Chelsea has bigger dreams for her life. She is a strong willed independent woman who wants to ride horses and stay with her brothers and father forever. When her father tries to arrange a marriage to a high society English Man, Chelsea takes matters into her own hands. She decides to seduce "London's most infamous libertine", Sinjin St.John, Duke of Seth, “the Saint.”

"Despite his reputation for sexual excess, women had always played a relatively minor role in his life."

Sinjin is a well versed in the ways of women. At first when Chelsea tries to draw him in (literally), Sinjin is able to resist temptation. However, later Chelsea finds a way into his bed. After one night, Sinjin recognizes something different about the young vixen. They form a friendship of sorts. In addition to friendship, the two have formed a passionate sexual bond that brings them both a great deal of satisfaction.

description

"He drove into her deeply as if the answer to his unease could be physically assuaged, as if the powerful rhythm of thrust and withdrawal would clear away the enigmatic conundrum, as if his strength could overcome her bewitching allure."

After their time together has passed, Chelsea and Sinjin go their own ways. Although they believe they will never see each other again, circumstances change and they are forced back together. Sinjin must then decide if he is truly able to be a "kept man"? Does Chelsea have the staying power to keep Sinjin satisfied for a lifetime?

description

Sinful is truly a delectable read. The combination of the rich text and clearly defined setting allows you to feel connected to the characters and the time period. Although I am not a historian, I was completely absorbed in the story and felt like I had a good grasp on the dynamics of that time period. Both Sinjin and Chelsea are extremely likable characters and although there story is set in the 18th Century, I feel that their story could have been unfolding in the 21st century. The sexual chemistry between Sinjin and Chelsea was quite scandalous and although Sinjin is a bit of a bad boy, it didn't take him long to win me over! Regarding the story arc, there were aspects towards the end of the read that seemed a bit disconnected from "the core" of the story and yet, I found the addition only heightened the dynamics between Chelsea and Sinjin.

"Everything about you matters."

Overall, Sinful is a spectacular Historical Romance. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip to the past and will definitely continue reading this series. I understand Wicked is about Sinjin's son. As we know, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Therefore I, for one, am ready to get to know the grown up Beau! My kindle will be ready!

Odd fact, I actually bought this Sinful by Jennifer Dawson for a whopping .99 on Amazon, but ended up receiving this Sinful (St. John-Duras, #1) by Susan Johnson . I was robbed. Yeah, I know, .99, but still.

There are spoilers below so beware...

Plot: The h does not want to marry the evil Bishop who has his eye on her so she propositions the wickedest manwhore in London, the H. He's not in the mood to compromise virgins that day so says, NO!". Being a saucy wench, she sneaks into his bed when he's asleep. He thinks she just another whore supplied by his host (charming, I'm already in love), and has sex with her. He realizes she's a virgin, but thinks his host is being extra generous with the whores. Can we all say, "Ick." together?

Her brother finds them and wants to beat the hell out of him, but the H and h convince him she was the instigator. Instead of leaving things well enough alone since neither wants to marry, they end up having, not an affair, but a series of hookups. She ends up pregnant, what a surprise, and her father and brothers kidnap the H, beat the ever loving squat out of him, and make them marry. Oh yeah, did I forget to say he'd gone back to his slutty sidepiece in the meantime.

When the H and h meet again, he's furious and hates her for entrapping him. Poor guy, he's a 30-something manwhore and she's 17. She's a piece of work too, but he should have known better. He's pretty much a bastard to her as he never wanted to get married. He has a son, a bastard, from the love of his life and wants no other.

She has a miscarriage; leaves to see her family then shows up in London. The H is having tea with his mother, his mistress, his brother, and SIL who has the hots for him. The h can hold her own and is, for some reason, in love with the asshole. He's okay with her there, but doesn't want to have sex as he hasn't decided if he will divorce her or not. Hmm, last time I checked it was near to impossible to divorce in the Georgian era, but why quibble about facts at this point.

The evil Baron makes an appearance to twirl his mustache Simon Degree style, is warned off by the H and never heard from again. ??????

The H decides to leave for Tunis with his son. The h seduces him, FINALLY, so he takes her, but apparently forgot his son.

He leaves her in Naples so he can go horse bargaining, and he's kidnapped by a Sheikh to play stud so the Sheikh can get an heir. THEN it jumps the shark. While looking for the H, the h is kidnapped as well. Guess who the H is supposed to do the deed with? Yes, the h. What a coinkeedeenk.
Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.

Good God almighty.

If it wasn't bad enough when the H is storming around blaming the h for everything, this ridiculous plot point happens. The only character worthwhile is Cressidia who was rescued with the h. Of course, we never hear about her again.

Dropped threads, dropped characters. What happened to her brother who was one of the H's best friend? What happened to her father who played a huge part of the first half? Cressidia? How did sweet Beau, the H's bastard son, apparently turn into the manwhore he becomes in the next book?

I started out loving this story, then absolutely hating it...I was completely misled by the synopsis...yes Lady Chelsea did bring the Duke to his knees...however that didn't stop him from heating up the sheets with every woman he could get his hands on well into his relationship with her. That alone made it impossible for me to imagine that he could ever change his ways, therefore blinding me to any certainty of a happily ever after for them in spite of what played out on the pages. It would have been a wonderful story if not for his being such a man whore. Since book two revolves around his son who grows up to be just like daddy, I think I'll pass on reading any more from this series

I’ve always liked a good romantic historical book and this one was not an exception. It sucked me in from page one. Sinful takes place in the 1700’s and it’s set in London but you will really see it all across Great Britain and other dangerous places like Africa. Sinjin St. John, Duke of Seth; it’s a stunning gorgeous Lord-playboy. He has no need for a serious relationship and no interest on marriage. At age twenty-eight, British, black hair, blue eyes basically he is a total slut and that reputation follows him everywhere and he is not even sorry or ashamed of it. He has a love for horses and is well known for his bets and wins.
description

Chelsea Fergusson; Scottish with golden hair, Violet eyes and Virgin at only seventeen-year of age is being forced to marriage to save the family’s debt. She is stubborn of course and I loved that about her. Chel has a plan and she was bound to make it happened. She will force herself to the Lord and mighty “Sinjin” to lose her virginity so that no one will marry her. Her plan worked but not after several attempts as for Sinjin had no plans on getting married or getting in trouble just for a one night stand when he can have anyone. However; tricked or not he found Chel fascinated and one time was not enough for him.

“She liked the word “help”. It made her undertaking more benign, more friendly, less fearful and outrageous.” Chel

Sinjin and Chel made a bet and ended up some time together and once it was over they would both walk their separate ways. It worked for both; for Sinjin he gets to enjoy the most beautiful woman he had ever met money was nothing for him. For Chel she will get the money she needed and enjoy the pleasure while she was at it. Once it was over she will move on and live as an Independent riding and teaching her horses. I can tell you I was super Steamy and I loved it.

“She felt like paradise…perfect, her legs spread wide to accommodate his size, her sweet mouth opening beneath the pressure of his, welcoming him.” Sinjin

description

“He moved then, sliding gently upward, and she sucked in a breath of ecstasy, holding him inside her with shuddering need.” Chel

description

However; nothing was always so easy. Things put both of them on a hard spot and I was watching and couldn’t stop reading all the madness the crazies happening was driving me wild. The father’s selfish actions in the beginning were not fair for Chel so I completely understand her choices. However; I was one hundred percent with the father and brothers later on because well Sinjin was a man whore and needed a lesson. I was cheering them up until the next events I was a complete nervous mess. This entire story was amazing kept me hooked and on the edge. Yes it made me angry very angry I felt I was going to have an ULCER I was so angry at Sinjin’s choices he pissed me off so much I wanted to hurt him. However; my prayers were answered and he does gets what he deserved at the end and yes I enjoyed the torture a bit not a lot haha. Overall the action and suspense towards the end was amazing I was really happy how this ended and where the author took us on this amazing adventure.

"It was a most terrible obsession. It was heaven. It was awful. It was wonderful. It was madness, agony, intoxication, reckless need."

“Sinjin St. John, Duke of Seth, Marquess of Fowler, Earl of Burton, Viscount Carvernon, normally was settled in at Newmarket for the entire race season, his passion for horseflesh, everyone knew, surpassing even his acute interest in female flesh.”

When I read the blub of this book, I was like go for it. But then, I’ve forgotten everything else, and all I can actually think about, or more like do, is stare at the cover for hours. I mean, I know right? I am a sucker for beautiful covers and hell, this definitely tops my list. Lick-able. Yum.

Chelsea Amity Fergusson. I must admit, seldom that I would chose a heroine over a hero. But when I do, it’s because she have that amazing personality that is a major hard on than that of the H. And Chelsea, by God, is remarkable. Independent, intelligent, brave and that mouth of her when she speaks? Ah, vastly marvelous. She is a big risk-taker considering her passion for horses and races. I love that she is firm with her decisions and that when she put her mind into something, she made it happen no matter how impossible the circumstances are considering the era she was in.

Well, I must admit that from the first time I’ve laid my eyes upon Sinjin, all I can think of is that beautiful cover and that beautiful man. But he is an asshole, a first class bastard and really, I have hated him so much to the point that I am cursing him to hell and back. Seriously, if not for Chelsea, I would have given up on this novel. Gah, I am so furiously irritated with him. But, for a rake on those times, I remember St. Vincent with him, the other saint I’m most fascinated about. Still, no matter how he was so conflicted with his feelings, I admire the care he had for Chelsea during those times she was so lost and vulnerable.

“I promise I won't cry out no matter how it hurts, no matter what you do. I won't, really...”

I have mostly given up on Sinjin, but with the turn of events and the twist at the end, I kind of actually expected that. I know from my experience with historical that these unfortunate events is like a fantasy, something happening out of the blue without rhyme or reason to the first part of the story, and yet still, I am enamored with it. That there was growth in the character development and that I’ve seen how what they’re feeling become strong and solid. It was dreadful what happened to them but in some ways, it was beautiful.

The ending was a bitter-sweet. And I couldn’t think of a better way to explain it. Unpleasantly beautiful? Because I know it was ending and I so wish it wouldn’t but I know it must. And really, when the story ended, all I can think of is Beau making his way to be like his father, thinking of Seneca, and a smile on my face because once again I was able to read a beautiful story that brought tears and heartaches and hope and smiles to my heart.

Chelsea Amity Fergusson, daughter of the impoverished Earl of Dumfries, trying to thwart off an unwanted marriage to the wealthy but loathsome Bishop Hatfield, makes herself unworthy by losing her virginity to London's most notorious rake, Sinjin St. John, Duke of Seth. When Sinjin refuses she plots and succeeds to seduce him. Not willing to let her go, Sinjin makes her a wager and wins a week she has to spend with her.

When Chelsea becomes pregnant, her furious father and brothers abduct Sinjin and violenty force the two into marriage, but then separate them and imprison him. However, I did not understand that. Was the motivation his daughter's honor of the Duke's money.
Sinjin is rescued by his friend, Seneca, with the help of Chelsea. After his rescue Sinjin decided to hold Chelsea hostage so her family will leave him alone. He wants to keep her hostage until the baby is born and he knows for sure it is his. They grow more and more towards each other, but than Chelsea miscarries, and Sinjin decides to bring Chelsea to London to introduce her as his wife.
Loosing the fight of his attraction towards her, he decides to leaves for Tunis, where he is captured by an evil Bey. Chelsea heads over to Tunis to pay the ransom him and ends up, together with Sinjin, in a only-possible-in-books adventure.

This was a slow read, where I skipped a lot of pages and I almost DNF; I really did not care for the adventure in Tunis and failed to see the added value.

Not bad. Writing style was adequately elegant. Unexpected turns in the plot. Hero and heroine were independent and not always predictable. While there was nothing wrong about it, there was nothing that was done well: it didn't grab me in any particular way. Chelsea decides, in order to avoid a suitor, to lose her innocence to the neighbourhood libertine, Sinjin. Unfortunately for her, Sinjin has "morals." Translation: A keen and practical sense of self-preservation so he emphatically rejects her suit, avoiding innocents. However, Chelsea decides to sneak into his home later that night, where he is holding an orgy for his pals. Sinful is an okay read about two people who love horses, with a very convincing libertine and a fiery country girl who could have been a bit more audacious for real sparks to fly.

Secret week-long dalliance, pregnancy scare and shotgun wedding, kidnapping in a faraway land and sexual voyeurism aside - what I admire most about Sinful is the historical research Susan Johnson devoted to the work, and I have to admit the footnotes were kind of the best part since I tuned out about halfway through the story. I do appreciate that Sinjin is an honest-to-god libertine, even though he was dragging his heels and acting silly. The sketch of the mistress sitting cozily with the family as Chelsea, the wife, walks in during tea time is a very delightful tableau in terms of showing social values at the time (Wives can basically do anything as long as they play the game and pop out an heir). I think Chelsea could have made him work for it more, but he simply leaves a card game early to escort her home at a dance that one time. All right, he does go temporarily blind but I mean before that whole crazy turn in North Africa. Anyways, Sinful is ok but not entertaining due to the lack of humour and sense of drama.

LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVED THIS!!! This was such a great book, such a good story, wonderfully written... I loved that this wasn't just some quick little story like boy meets girl they have problems they get over it and live happily ever after... Chelsea and Sinjin, the main characters go through so very much in this book, Chelsea hides away in Sinjin's carriage to offer up her virginity... just to escape an unwanted engagement and that's where they're extensive adventures take off, from her father's outrageous gambling debts to her unwanted suitor, secret rendezvous, shotgun weddings, kidnapped bridegrooms, unplanned pregnancies, questions of paternity, miscarriages, sneaky mistresses, tonish gossip, his secret past, runaway husbands, Sinjin is taken hostage in Tunisia, she is kidnapped and forced into a harem... just to name a few! This book takes you from the Scottish country side, to London, to Italy, and the Northern coast of Africa. This book is never boring but never too outlandish. The best Susan Johnson book I've read yet!

This book was not my thing...not my kind of book I need to read over and over again.
I cannot see where's the romance..there's no romance with a hero who slept with another woman after slept with heroine. That's kind of story is too dirty for me for historical romance.
Well, if it meant to be an erotica romance, maybe its okay, but as erotica, the book was not as hot as erotica :)

Its just... not my cup of tea....
Even it maybe yours ... LOL

Not bad. There was that incident in the last few chapters that I felt were unnecessary. I think it was a plot device to make the hero realize that he loved his wife. There was a little bit of the I'm-in-love-with-my-husband-but-he-will-never-feel-the-same-way-about-me angst that I enjoy. Wish there could have been more of that.

Reading Sinful was like riding a roller coaster for me. The book starts off with the heroine asking the hero to take her virginity (sounds crazy, right? But there're a lot of things that made my mouth hanging open until the end).

Chelsea is bold. Maybe this was the reason I liked her very much. She's not like our typical heroines in many historical romance books, and she's not annoying even tough she acts like a brat sometimes.
Sinjin St. John is on another level. He's super sexy with the way Susan Johnson described him. And when it led to many sex scenes, I was like ... oh no! this is so hot my house maybe on fire right now. Just like that and this book became my favorite after few chapters.

Despite some components I'd like to hate, for Sinjin, he's a noncommittal hero who sleeps around with other women even he has had Chelsea, there are also a lot to love about this book. The climax. The pace. The narrative.

I loved this book, until the part where they embarked a journey to Tunisia. I am offended with the way the author described rules in Koran. There is absolutely NONE of those shits described in Koran! And I feel a need to repeat myself that I am totally offended by that. As much as I love the story, my religion is something I put in highest place.

LOVED IT! BUT HATED IT TOO.

This is my next series I am tackling by Johnson and I gotta say Sinjun is the most arrogant hero yet in the mould. I enjoyed the first half of the book but when it got to the part where Sinjun was brutally kidnapped and forced to marry Chelsea.

OUR HERO:
He is handsome, arrogant and powerful. What's new? He is immediately taken with Chelsea's spirited beauty but because Johnson heroes are renowned to be often IN DENIAL, that's where complications arose. He made a bargain to Chelsea whose family is in debt and she propositions him with 50k pounds for a week of pleasure. They both meet up secretly often and eventually feelings deepened but as I mentioned before "denial" happens. I guess I can't blame him for being angry and resentful when he was kidnapped by Chelsea's family and forced to marry the girl. He wanted revenge. But honestly, his pride was just bruised. Despite his words, he cares really well for Chelsea but his stupid womanising past is always looming in the corner. When Chelsea miscarriages, he feels it quite as bad as she and by the way he has a son from a love affair when he was 18. Because his first love committed suicide, he sworn never to love again. I would say he is rather STUPID with his actions when he wants to push his wife away but he loves her. Shit happens and when he finally realises that he loves his wife, trust me the circumstances were rather bizarre and makes you wonder if it was necessary.

OUR HEROINE:
I first thought she had backbone and I enjoyed how she propositioned the incorrigible man whore to take her virginity. He prudely refuses! Imagine that! Later she sneaks into his home and fell into bed with him while he was abed. Chelsea is naturally passionate and a sexual creature who has only slept with one man in her life - Sinjun of course. When they part and she gets pregnant, they were forced to marry. That was the start of a bad marriage. However at one point, they fell into a normal marriage routine where both anticipated the birth of their child. When she miscarriages, it devastated her and Sinjun sought to cheer her up. Chelsea meets his mistress when he takes her back to his childhood estate, meeting his mother. I look at Chelsea more as a victim of love because Sinjun was hot and cold often, you can't help but feel sorry for her and wanting to say "JUST LEAVE THE DAMN MAN!"

OVERALL:
Like most Johnson books, it leaves you enjoying it yet feeling very vexed. I can't say if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Just always be prepared to feel a little disappointed with the way things turn out and just forge on.

JOHNSON BOOKS ARE EQUAL PASSION AND JEALOUSY BUT WITH JUST A PINCH OF ROMANCE.

I didn't even finish this book because is was so frustratingly un-fun to read with its angsty injustice and foolish conspiracies. It pushed every one of my feminine equality buttons. I understand that women had little power in those times but I just didn't enjoy experiencing that lack of power when I was expecting a sexy romance. Here are my main grievances:

1. There was very little hotness and there wasn't anything notably erotic about the sex. In fact many potentially interesting scenes were skimmed over.
2. The hero is a dick. Sometimes that can be sexy in a bad boy sort of way but this was not the case with Sinjin. At first he seemed charming but his character changed once he returned to London (I found it totally incongruous to his original persona) and then he devolved into selfish arrogant brat taking away the heroine's choices, freedom and power because he felt like it.
3. The heroine was delightful in so many ways but she had little backbone when it came to Sinjin regardless of his bad behavior which was infuriating.
4. The heroine's family was stupid. A bunch of bumbling knuckleheads who didn't appreciate the heroine enough.
5. There were too many improbabilities and inaccuracies to ignore. For example a Duke could easily ignore a forced Catholic marriage since Catholicism wasn't recognized by the crown and forced coercion of a top ranking peer would never be upheld anyway. Also, Scottish colors were illegal so 20+ kilt wearing Scots surrounding a Duke's London residence would not fly, especially in the middle of the season. There are many other instances as well...

I'm disappointed because I thought I had finally found a good HER since they are hard to come by.

Naming your child Sinjin St. John is (nearly) as bad as those people who name their kids things like William Williams. At least they're spelled differently. But I must wonder if the author knew that St. John is actually pronounced Sinjin. In her note, she said that she knew Sinjin meant St. John, which just makes it worse, in my opinion.

Well... I went along with the story for most of the book, even liked it at times. I can't say I was a huge fan of the writing style, but it was okay. Then the last bit happened, and it was just so ridiculous that it knocked my whole impression of the book down.

It has been years since I've read a book by this author and I must admit I was a bit worried since my reading habits have changed over the years but I'm happy to say I worried for nothing as a really enjoyed this book. Reading it was like reconnecting with an old friend I just picked where I left off it was like no time had passed all the elements I've come to know and love from a Susan Johnson title is still there, hot sex scenes, alpha hero, strong female character etc. There were parts of this book that I really didn't care for but overall it was an enjoyable read.

Well it was fine and dandy, until I reached the last portion where they embarked on a not-so-believable adventure and were forced to have sex while others watched. Too good to be true. I favor a touch of reality.

Unfortunately I had to stop on this one, could see that it didn't suit my tastes. It's very well written though.

In need of a rake to save her from an unwanted marriage to a man she does not love, Chelsea Fergusson begs the notorious Sinjin St. John to help her. The immediate story line of this book is pretty much the usual -- rich, handsome, eligible rake hero and a head strong, intelligent and beautiful heroine who is arranged to an unwanted marriage by family to improved financial status or to pay off gambling debts. However, what made their story much more appealing though is the way they both intensely react to each other.

The only thing that bothered me about this book is Sinjin's abrupt change of character towards the end. Given the circumstances, I could understand his bitterness but his cold and rude treatment towards Chelsea was simply uncalled for. I was disappointed because Sinjin was such a gentleman to Chelsea in the beginning of the book. He was kind, thoughtful, playful and gentle to her. Almost as if you can see that he truly cares for her. His intense attraction towards her in the beginning was too much to abruptly just turn around like that. More importantly, Sinjin and Chelsea never talked about his first love Catherine, especially when its clear she played such an important part in his life.

Beautifully done. The adverbs were a bit adverby in the beginning, but that calmed down right quick. With another easy win (this is the third), Susan Johnson has joined the ranks of Best Romance Authors Ever. For me, at least, those can be counted on one hand.
I've never read another romance novelist who writes footnotes (or whatever the word is for numbered footnotes all sitting at the end of the book) for all her stories. More than once I got distracted from the story by reading all the fascinating footnotes. I was like, "Wow that's cool!" and then realized I was already two chapters ahead in the footnotes. *grin*

Sinjin was so hard to tie down & get him to commit. He seemed to spend most of his life racing his horses or in bed with the ladies.

I was kinda annoyed with the plot point of the miscarriage. Chelsea accidentally fell pregnant, which served as the plot device to get the two married because her father insisted upon it. (And why when Sinjin was rescued, we never heard from the father again in the book? I just remembered that.)
So why did the author Susan Johnson have her lose the kid? To show that Sinjin would stay married to her without a child on the way?

Also, I did not like how Sinjin had sex with other women, mainly his mistress Cassandra after he had met & bedded Chelsea multiple times when he was back in London. I guess Chelsea & he were thinking that their affair was over, because it was too hard to maintain her being an unmarried, young noble lady and all. Luckily, he did not sleep with other women after Chelsea's father forced them to get married---I would have been very mad then & it would have turned me off from the story too. Because Chelsea was already in love with Sinjin, and I dislike when one person cares for the other so much more, and it would have been pretty gross if he was sleeping w other women (and not being super passionate about even sleeping w them, cuz he had the best sex w Chelsea) while Chelsea was in love with him.

Even though what happened at the end was random & unnecessary, it was very entertaining & exciting, and probably my favorite scenes (and I loved the sex scenes in the harem) in the whole novel.

I accidentally read Book 2 before this one (I think because I found it in the list of accidental pregnancy, but ironically this one also had an accidental pregnancy), and so I got introduced to both Chelsea & Sinjin. Chelsea seemed a lot more subdued & not as lively or spirited I guess as she was in this book. I liked her personality in this book. Now I kinda want to read part of the second book again for glimpses of Chelsea & Sinjin...should have read this book first.
Well oops.

Reread: This was a reread for me for a book club and I forgot how sexy this author makes her men. They are larger then life (literally) and can do things no other human can make happen.

In a genre, where the build up and the social etiquette is what makes historical fiction so fascinating, Sinjin St John breaks them all. I loved every decadent moment.

This author may not be for traditional historical romance lovers, but I enjoyed getting lost in the fantasy of make believe and believe me, there is no lover in existence like Sinjin.
