DNF @50% never captured my interest. I'm giving up on this whole woodland creek series.
This book is part of The Woodland Creek series, a collection of 30 stand-alone stories by 30 different authors, all revolving around the small town of Woodland Creek.
This particular story is about Cassie - or, as her mother used to call her, Cassidy - who found out she might just be turning into a demon on her 25th birthday! When she receives a strange book that is supposed to be sent by her long-dead mother, strange things start to happen. All the signs point her towards the direction of Woodland Creek, the place where she grew up before all the misfortunes and tragedies of her life took place and led her to leave the town!
When she arrives to Woodland Creek she is fairly happy to find there her childhood friend, Josh, whom she might actually feel an attraction about. And, then her best friend from all those years back, Jenn, also makes her appearance. And, all hell breaks loose... Literally!
This story was quite quick-paced, with lots of events taking place, both mysterious and adventurous! The heroine was quite strong-willed, and I just loved her and her slowly growing horns! Her romantic interest, Josh was also quite lovable, and I felt greatly fond of him! Her rival was also strong, something that only added more to the story!
The way the author wrote, I was able to completely grasp the mood of the story, and the tragedies the heroine has survived! I loved all the flashbacks, and the letters from Cassie's long-lost mother were just awesome, perky and straight to the point!
All in all, 5 stars for an awesome read that made me want to know more about the mysterious little town of Woodland Creek!
Cassie Walker is dreading her approaching 25th birthday as it brings back memories of the accident that caused her family's death. Now, at the insistence of a therapist, Cassie returns to her home town of Elliot, Indiana and her family's home. She hopes that confronting the past will help with her ability to sleep and the shadows that have been creeping in. What Cassie finds, however, is a book left by her mother telling her that she is a demon and will begin growing horns and feeling a hunger for things. On the upside, Cassie reconnects with her friend Josh and he encourages her to enter the annual Demon Run in Woodland Creek. While dealing with all of her changes, Cassie realizes that things are amiss in Woodland Creek, especially with her friend, Jenn. As Cassie finds out more about her demon lineage and the benefits, she must fight the other powers in Woodland Creek.
The Good Girl's Guide to Being a Demon is a fun novella with wonderful characters in a fun setting. I felt an immediate connection with Cassie as a totally normal woman with everyday problems and trying to fight off her demons, only her demons are real. For a novella, the writing pulled me into the story quickly. I had a good sense of who Cassie was, where she came from and the setting. The story took off quickly as Cassie entered Woodland Creek. I enjoyed her journey to becoming a demon and uncovering her mother's letters and her supernatural history. The drama between Cassie and her friends Josh and Jenn was compelling and suspenseful and Cassie attempted to figure out what was happening in Woodland Creek along with what was happening in her own body. The ending wrapped up a little suddenly for me with a time jump, but was still satisfying. The Good Girl's Guide to Being a Demon is part of a series all taking place in Woodland Creek, so I might have to check some of those out!
I thought this was such a fun read and a great addition to the woodland creek world. The main character broke my heart but still had so much courage to keep going and then had me cheering for her. I haven't read anything by this author before but I will now :)
Cassie lost her mom when she was 5, then lost her dad and brother on her 24th birthday. How unbearable and yet she seems to be decently ok. She's trying to do something with her life and she knows something's got to give. She remembers all her happy times when her dad, brother, his best friend Josh, and her best friend Jen, used to go camping out at Woodland Creek. She also remembers how Josh saved her life and she fell in love with him. So after receiving a few signs, she heads back to her past.
Cassie's got some crazy to deal with- she's got something demon going on, there's shadow people who follow her, nightmares she doesn't understand, and her shrink says she needs to face her demons- her shrink has no idea. Lol and then Cassie runs into Josh. Cassie wants to tell him she's loved him for years. And then they run into her old friend Jen. And things get really complicated.
I really liked this one. There's a great suspense that follows the mystery and the romance is well done because it built and had to work itself up. I was glued to the pages from the start and I enjoyed the whole thing. I liked all of the characters and the story was well written. I look forward to reading more from the author. 5 DEMON PAWS!!
(1.5 Stars) "The Good Girls Guide to Being a Demon" Started out with such potential but ended up being a uninspired, sad tale. I was really looking forward to reading this book and sadly, it let me down.
Cassidy has lost her mother, father and brother over the years and ends up in Arizona where she exists while trying to make heads or tails of her life. After visiting a counselor, she us advised to go home and face her past head on. There she encounters Josh, her brother's best friend and love of her life. She always thought her brother would end up with her best friend, Jennifer and she would end up with Josh. On her twenty fifth birthday things are about to change for Cassie in a big way.
Josh talks Cassie into entering the town's Annual demon run and he so confesses he had a crush on Jenn. What I found interesting about this was Cassie didn't seem upset or perturbed by this revelation, she just continued to pursue Josh even though he cleat thought of her as a little sister. As Cassie ruins into Jennifer, she realizes that something isn't right and that she is a Nephillum. In this world is seems demons are good and nephillum are evil. This is where the story becomes a convoluted mess and where my interest waned.
In the end I was left with an uninspired storyline that left me bored out of my witts. How could something with such potential turn out so wrong? Oh well, you can't win them all!
Cassie Walker has been adrift for years since the loss of her family. Now twenty-five, she returns to Woodland Creek, where she encounters her childhood crush, Josh Tucker. She quickly learns that all is not as it appears. Danger threatens them.
This blend of "Coming of Age Fantasy" and "Fantasy Romance" genres is fabulous. She must grow to be all that she is: stalwart and true. While challenges exist, the end is marvelous.
Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Happily Ever After. Romantic. Scary. Tragic. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
Not in this wonderful story. It takes your ideas and turns then on their heads. Well written. Sad, fun, endearing, loving, tragic all ruled into one rounded story and lesson to live life to the fullest and do what makes your happy instead of what you lock yourself into.
I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of a young woman learning of her demon heritage. Coming up against nephilem. Learning that good and evil are not strictly black and while, not nearly so clear cut. And that love in its truest sense is the strongest power there is.
This book was really different. The story was interesting. I liked the fact that the author took the whole angels and demons story in this direction. Would recommend reading
Cassie's having a rough year. She's still not really over the tragic loss of her beloved dad and brother, and she's been having trouble sleeping, and pounding headaches. And the shadow people that first frightened her as a child have been appearing more frequently. She's barely getting by with liberal doses of NyQuil and Excedrin.
But she can't tell that to the therapist that her manager at the cafe, her deceased mom's friend, Barbara paid to have her see. Especially the part about the shadow people...
Even the therapist thinks it's time, now that Cassie's 25, for her to go home, to face her past. Maybe that will help her get on with her life.
Then a strange package arrives, a book that appears to be sent from Cassie's mom, from beyond the veil...
It's a blank book. Or is it..?
There's a message there, that gives Carrie some insight into what's happening to her--the headaches, the trouble sleeping...
That settles it, sending Cassie back home to an adventure that will not only shake up her life, but force her to confront both her past and her fears.
A light, paranormal page turner with some thriller elements and a sprinkling a sexual tension.
Cassie moved to Phoenix after the death of her father and brother so she could start anew, but sometimes the only way forward is to go back to where you started. On her 25th birthday, she receives a book with a letter from her mother who died when she was a child. Confused at the insistence of her employer she heads home to Elliot where she grew up and runs into her childhood friends Josh and Jenn. Between secrets and newfound knowledge lies the truth of her heritage, but is that a good or a bad thing?
I've had this book in my tbr pile a long time, but finally picked it out of the stack. I enjoyed reading the twist of Angels and Demons, but I love all things paranormal so this was a good fit for me.
Cassie Martin has seen a lot of tragedy in her young life. First she loses her mother many years ago and her father and brother were killed a year ago. Unable to deal with being in the same town and same house, Cassie flees, hoping to start over. Except the dreams she's had still plague her, the shadow people still invade her space, she can't sleep, and she can feel changes going on within herself. When a mysterious package finds its way to her, she knows it's time.
It's time to go back and face her fears and find out just who or what she is. While home, she runs into the boy she has always loved since she was a child, Josh. He is a sight for sore eyes and his excitement at seeing her has hope flaring withing her heart. Only when another long lost friend, Jenn, blazes back into to town does Cassie begin to understand that something is happening and is very sinister.
Learning to embrace her lineage also forces her recognize that those she knows may not be exactly who they say they are. It's now up to the new demon on the block to get a handle on her new life and save her town and the man she loves.
I really enjoyed The Good Girl’s Guide to Being a Demon. Sure the book is filled with tragedy, family secrets, and evil but it's written so well that you can't help but get wrapped up in the story. The main character, Cassie, expresses her emotions clearly and you find them enveloping you as you move from page to page. You feel her tiredness, her anxiety, her pain. You also feel her contentment, longing, and love.
The story is unique in that we have angels and demons and the good vs. evil plot but there are twists that you won't see coming. I was so absorbed in the story that I didn't realize just how close to the end I was. The story has a steady pace and the dialogue is fluid. There is enough backstory given to get the reader up to speed and enough details to keep the reader engaged.

I have read all of April's books and this one did not disappoint me. The characters draw you in and the story line keeps your interest till the last page.
I had such high hopes for this book. The opening starts with Genesis 6:4 and I got excited.....fallen angels and human woman = nephillum's and the battle for good over evil would not doubt ensue with a demon involved....
The premise of this story starts off well enough, Cassie is about to turn 25 and receives a book from her long dead mother. Having lost her father and brother the year before too, she is struggling to find a focus to move on with her life. Now she is turning into a demon (horn nubs included) it gives her the push she needs to head to her childhood home and get on with living.
And this is where the hot mess starts.....and not in a good way.....
Josh is supposedly the love of her life, Jenn her childhood BFF is an evil bitch and a nephillum......and needs Josh to build her stairway back to heaven......this is all taking place around a fancy dress annual demon/angel run in the woods......I'm just at a loss......the 'great battle' was like a scripted scrummage...add in an old bloke offering green liquid to drink, shadow people, sniffing men on a plane and a tiny red dress.....*meh*
I struggled to the end.......finally.......feeling very let down.....
That's two for two in the Woodland Creek series......do I go for a strike???
This is my first read by April Aasheim - I look forward to more by the author. Cassis Martin - has been running from life, her mother died when she was young, and her Dad and brother died suddenly years later. She has been haunted by dreams for years - shadow people stalking her, she doesn't sleep much because of the dreams. She left the town she grew up in and ran away, and has been under a doctors care. The Phychiastris suggest she confront her demons (just wait) and go home. On her 21st birthday she makes the decision and goes home. Cassie runs into the guy she had a crush on for years and sparks start to fly. Then another friend shows up and interferes with what she and Josh were starting.
Demon's is a refreshing switch on Angel's and Demon's dark and light. Ms. Aasheim will keep you engaged and turning pages to see who is evil and who is the savior of the story. Her characters are strong and well developed. If you are looking for a great paranormal romance that is a bit different then I highly recommend this one. Well done.
Another amazing book by a great author it's about a woman named Cassie Walker that has started changing into a demon on her 25 th birthday, she receives a book from her dead mother and decides to travel back to her home town and her parents house that she abandoned when her brother and father had died to get some answers to why she can hardly sleep anymore and is always losing track of time while seeing shadow people. She returns to her home town and meets one of her childhood friends josh tucker who she's still a crush on even when they were kids and gets talked into enter the annual demon run in woodland creek, and ends up meeting another old childhood friend jenn but jenn doesn't seam to be acting herself and gets the feeling it really isn't jenn. She now knows that josh is in danger and needs to save him some how if you love a good demon love story you must read
This was a fun, lighthearted read that really held my attention. I'm usually always complaining about wanting more story when I love a short book, but The Good Girl's Guide to Being a Demon is just perfect the way it is. If you love paranormal fantasy and are looking for something quick and fun to read, definitely check out this book!
I very much enjoyed this story. Cassie is a girl turning 25. She's mourning the loss of her family, and at the same time dealing with some strange changes. A package from her deceased mother prompts her to return to her hometown. Her fever, her visions of things in the shadows, the fact that she's growing horns, and her insomnia all make for interesting "side effects" of being a demon. I enjoyed seeing the author's take on demons. The story is well-crafted and keeps you attached to the characters. There is an innocence to the story that gives it a wistful quality, while at the same time flirting with the dark side. I was highly entertained and would love to read more into these stories of Woodland.
