I learned something about myself with this book. While I am totally and completely okay with dominate guys and their women being submissive, I am NOT okay with the whole pet thing. You know how you get this little tick or twitch when something bugs you...and keeps bugging you? Well, I was getting them a lot with this. I am not okay with the girl having to kneel at his feet everywhere. I am not okay with her being hand fed little pieces food. I am not okay with her being made to sleep on an oversized doggie bed on the floor. I am not okay with her not being allowed any clothing of any kind. It also bugs the hell out of me when the guy calls their girl a slut. This in not a turn on. In any way, shape, or form. I get that some people are okay with and into this, but I am not and that's going to color my review.
I couldn't understand Lindsey and her decisions at all. She went to college to be a psychologist and yet somehow thinks it's completely acceptable to sign a year of her life away to act as another's slave. She will not be allowed to make any decisions and must obey him no matter what he wants to do to her or make her do. We are told repeatedly how this is not normal thinking and not something she should be doing, but in the next breath we're told how it has given her freedom unlike anything she's ever known and that makes it all okay. Um, no.
I'm not sure how I feel about Kade. I get where he is coming from and most of the reasons behind his actions. But, again, I just couldn't get past how he literally treated Lindsey like she was a dog.
When I first started reading, I was sure that I missed that this was a spin off or something. We are thrown into this world with no world building or explanations. While it was easy enough to figure everything out, it was a little jarring at first. So Lindsey has a pretty rough life right now. She has a mountain of debt, wants nothing to do with her family, and an ex boyfriend who is a complete self-absorbed dick. When her best friend tells her of this opportunity to make $500k by becoming a dragon's slave for a year, she convinces herself that that would be a better life. Even though she has no idea what to expect or even what kind of guy this dragon is, she agrees.
Most everything is not like what she was expecting. She thought Kade would be a lot meaner, for one. She read up on BDSM but didn't have a clue what she was really in for. And she quickly learns that dragons have no modesty or propriety in relationships. Most of the book is Lindsey at Kade's mansion being treated like a dog or used for sex and occasionally shared with others. It was an odd juxtaposition of detailed sex scenes on one page and fade to blacks on the next. Especially when it was a scene that was supposed to be really important to their relationship and we get nothing. Nothing really happens until the end when a kidnapping is thrown in just to drum up some drama and force these two to confess they love each other. Where is my eyeroll emoji when I need it?
Besides the whole premise of this book urking me, there were also a couple other things that really stood out. First, this needs a better editor. There were a ton of wrong words used. Second, way too much of a big deal was made out of Lindsey's ex for him to not actually have any sort of part in the story. If he was just there to point out he's the reason for Lindsey's low self esteem, fine. But then don't be putting things like him emailing her and asking to meet up in the story if nothing comes of it.
Obviously this book was not for me, but I'm going to give the next one chance because I already have it.
