Highland Knights #3

Highland Temptation

Rate this book
Jennifer Haymore’s sweeping Highland Knights series is perfect for readers of Maya Banks, Monica McCarty, and Sabrina Jeffries—and as the saga resumes, one of Scotland’s most steadfast warriors shields a broken beauty while she soothes the pain in his soldier’s heart.

When Lady Emilia Featherstone discovers that her despicable father has been scheming against the crown, she turns to the Highland Knights for protection—and retribution. Spirited away to a safe house on the outskirts of London, Emilia is surprised to find herself sharing close quarters with a soft-spoken, musclebound Highlander. Before long, curiosity gives way to an alarming attraction. Emilia has learned firsthand from her father that men are not to be trusted. She just never met one so honorable and loyal, so powerful and, yes, tempting.

Ever since Waterloo, Colin Stirling has struggled with memories that haunt him night and day. Driven near to madness, he no longer trusts himself with meaningful relationships of any kind. At least in this temporary sanctuary, Colin can withdraw from the world—that is, until his stunningly gorgeous charge learns the full depth of his pain. In Emilia, Colin sees a kindred spirit with battle scars of her own. He also senses a chance to heal . . . and to find love.

Highland Temptation was a REALLY good read for me. The story line was good and kept my attention the whole way through.

Lady Emilia Featherstone found some very incriminating evidence against her abusive father who just happens to catch her in the act of snooping through his papers. After being whipped badly by her father, she realizes she must run because she knows if she don’t that he will kill her. So she runs to the only people who she feels would keep her safe, she runs to the Highland Knights.

Sir Colin Stirling is one of the Highland Knights. He is furious at the condition of Lady Emilia. How a father could beat his only child to such an extent brings his protective mode out front and center. He feels the only way to keep her safe is to travel to Scotland and hide her out until they can figure out a way to take her father down. Along the way these two go from one dangerous scenario to another keeping the story interesting and exciting.

I absolutely loved how these two were there for each other. They both have bad demons they need to fight and they are there for each other 100%. With each passing day they become closer and it’s not long before they fall in love and into bed. The love scenes were very sensual, I really felt them and thought they were the perfect match for each other.

One of the things I love most about this read was the characters. I loved both Emilia and Colin so much so that I can’t pick a favorite. The secondary characters were also done very well, most of them from the previous books in this series. And then there was the villain, Lord Pinfield, Emilia’s father. What a piece of work he was.

It took some time to bring down Lord Pinfield. He kept rearing his ugly head and doing the most unthinkable acts along the way.

Highland Temptation ends with a wonderful epilogue tying things up nicely with a look into Emilia and Colin’s future. This is the type of ending I’m always looking for.

Special Note : Even though Highland Temptation is book 3 in the Highland Knights series, it can be easily read as a standalone.

'Highland Temptation' by Jennifer Haymore is book three in the "Highland Knights" series. This is the story of Lady Emilia Buchanan and Colin Stirling.
I have read all book in the series so far, but I would easily say this is a standalone book. The series is so good, so I really wouldn't want you to miss any of them.

Emilia has been abused by her father since she was younger...he also abused her mother. But one night Emilia is trying to find some damaging information on her father to help bring him uncontrolled... when she is caught by him. Emilia runs to the house of the "Highland Knights' were Colin is staying. Colin had been a protector to her family once and he had said if she every needed to be protected/help come to him there.
Colin was shocked to see Emilia and the condition she was in. They knew her father to be a very bad man but never thought he would hurt his daughter. Colin has always liked Emilia and quickly takes over her safety. Colin decided that it was better to head to Scotland than stay in London where her father might find her. So Colin and Emilia head to Scotland trying to out run her father.
Colin has issue of the past that he is trying to deal with too but aren't seeming to go away.
Can Colin and Emilia both survive their past issue and find a safe place to love in their hearts.
I don't think I can say enough about this series....I have really enjoyed it!

Am I the first one to review this book on Goodreads!!!???

So I started reading Jennifer Haymore with the first Highland Knights novel, A Highlander's Heart. I was really touched by Robert and Claire. I thought they had a real connection and their connection drove the story. Jennifer Haymore's style is natural and I find her writing easy to follow. Admittedly, it reads a little "simple" at times and there is pretense alright, but not so much to be a a reason to stop reading her books.

Every subsequent novel in the Highland Knights however, has not made the same impact on me as Robert and Claire's story. Jennifer Haymore has a rather heavy hand in terms of her sex scenes. This is evident in all her books. But she has yet to create another couple who exhibited the same kind of connection as the one Robert and Claire had in her other Highland Knights novels.

This particular book features Colin Stirling and Emilia Featherstone. The book opens strongly, as is the case with Haymore's other books. She is one of those writers that can draw you in. But Colin and Emilia's story quickly fizzled out. As the story went on, this reader needed to feel that Colin and Emilia had a connection that looped them together, even if the situation was less than friendly. This connection did not happen for me.

Emilia ran away from her abusive father and landed on Colin's or rather, the Highland Knights' doorstep, seeking protection. Colin then took Emilia away to protect her from her father and they were then alone on the road trip. Emilia's father was in pursuit because Emilia knew his dirty secret that would get him hanged. So Emilia was on the run from her villain father, Colin being her knight errant. A romance was born. All rather normal ruses for a romance novel. I would not call it a highlander story because other than Colin being a Scot and occasionally uttering a few sentences in Gaelic, there is nothing highlander about it. Colin seemed kind of weak and Emilia's metamorphosis from an abused shy virgin to a porn star was less than subtle. They had attraction because I was not convinced that they have weathered enough to go from attraction to love.

If you have read Jennifer Haymore's other books in the series, you will notice that Colin and Emilia's story isn't the hottest. But I still think Haymore has a heavy hand in writing intimacy because there were a few instances where it was just blatantly sexual, totally uncalled for. Romance cannot be replaced by a few crude words such as "do you like it hard?" Especially when the main characters, in this case Emilia, had been through quite some ordeal. I found it hard to believe that a shy virgin who was beaten to her last breath would find nipple pinching hot. I mean, is that really necessary?

I was not blown away by the book but it is alright. I was not struggling to finish the book because it was rather simple in plots and short in length. The relationship isn't very exciting but Jennifer Haymore's writing is straightforward enough. This is a book that you kind of just breeze in and out. Finished.

p.s Why is Emilia's last name Buchanan in the blurb?? Buchanan is a Scottish last name and Emilia was English. I am certain that in the ARC I just read Emilia's last name was Featherstone or something that starts with Feather.

Lady Emilia has always been a devoted daughter despite the horrible abuse her father dishes out to her on a regular basis especially ever since her mother passed away. But when she learns that her father has been behind a traitorous plot against the king and England, being found out by her father and whipped---she heads to the only place she knows of safety, The home of the Highland Knights and there is one knight in particular that she wants to see more than anyone, Colin Stirling. Colin suffers from the torments of war, having been tortured by the French for information, he still feels the demons both day and night. But even though he feels tormented, he also can't deny his instinct to protect Emilia and take care of her. When she pleads with Colin for his help specifically, he can't deny her. Colin and Emilia go into hiding, forced on the run, hiding from her father and trying to get the truth from Emilia so justice can be brought against her father and the men conspiring with him. But will Emilia and Colin's love be enough against the evil machinations of her father?
Plot and Story Line
Highland Temptation just might be my favorite one of the series, the romance was so sweet and compelling and quite a tear jerker with the poingnant moments this pair evokes in the reader. Jennifer Haymore does write some of the most stunning love stories, and Highland Temptation is one of her best books!! It sets off with out heroine, just having been severely whipped by her father and coming to the Highland Knights for help. At first she isn't quite ready, to reveal everything she knows about her father. This is what I loved about her character, is her loyalty to family. Even though her father has been abusive both physically and emotionally, she doesn't want him to die a traitors death either. But we do see how she comes to terms with it and does the right thing. Our hero is suffering from a severe form of PTSD from his time of being tortured. What is most remarkable is how Emilia handles the situation when the past haunts him. She fights for him and doesn't back down in aiding him when he needs it. This pair were so remarkable together, because even though it seems like their relationship is rushed...it doesn't feel that way at all. I loved seeing the way the story flowed together and the workings of the plot that add some mystery, adventure and suspense.
You have wound your way into my life, into my soul. You are so deep inside me, I could never let you go. You are a part of me. You are everything to me.

The Cover
Oh how I love it....my favorite of the series so far. I really like the purple.

Highland Temptation is third novel in Jennifer Haymore's Highland Knights series. I have not read the other novels in this series, but was intrigued by the description of this novel and decided to give it a try. I love bodyguard scenarios :) While I loved the plot line, I felt that this story was not crafted to be a standalone novel. Much of the love story seemed to hinge on the longing and trust built between the characters in the earlier novels of the series so that by the start of this novel, the characters were already practically soulmates by the second chapter. This does not always bother me, but in this novel, that jump start in the development of their relationship made all of the feelings in the novel seem less realistic and I found myself not as emotionally invested.

Emilia is Lord Pinfield's daughter. Ever since her mother's death, her father has emotionally and physically abused her. One night, Emilia snuck into her father's office and discovered he was keeping deadly secrets. When her father discovers her, she fears for her life and flees to the Highland Knights for protection. Sir Colin is one of the Highland Knights, and he is haunted by as many demons as Emilia. He has always admired Emilia and wanted to be close to her since meeting her while protecting her father (previous novel). Upon seeing Emilia, he feels a need to protect her by taking her away from London until the Knights can sort out what happened and what Emilia knows.

Most of this story takes place on the road. Colin and Emilia travel simply to avoid detection and Emilia is drawn to Colin for his gentleness with her as well as the shadows she senses follow him as closely as they follow her. Both of these characters have faced hellish situations and develop a kinship and connection to each other because of them. Despite the sweetness of most of this storyline, the sex begins early. I read a lot of historical romance and this is definitely on the more graphic side (even for Haymore novels I have read), too much for my taste. It was jarring for me to read about their experiences and have these tender scenes be followed by graphic sex. I felt that too much time was spent with them exploring each other physically instead of emotionally. As a result of this, their romance felt stunted.

Overall, this story had a lot of tension due to the threat of Emilia's father and the deadly activities he was involved in. However, there was limited angst of development of depth between Emilia and Colin from the first chapter to the last. I thought Haymore did a good job showing some of the struggles that Emilia and Colin faced when they tried to conquer their demons, but as for their love story, it just didn't have the depth I was hoping for.

The writing flowed well and I read this quickly, but I was not as invested in the romance as I'd hoped. In a nutshell, there was limited development in Colin and Emilia's feelings for each other, there was a lot of sex, and the Highland Knights didn't really do that good of a job protecting anyone.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review.

When Lady Emilia Featherstone discovers that her despicable father Lord Pinfield has been scheming against the Crown, she turns to the Highland Knights for protection. So Sir Colin Stirling I tasked with taking Emilia to Scotland to hid from her father Ever since the Battle of Waterloo, Sir Colin Stirling has struggled with memories & nightmares that haunt him night and day, but being near to Emilia eases these.
The third book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own characters from the previous books do appear, so to fully appreciate it I’d recommend reading in order. Colin & Emilia had been attracted to each other whilst he’d been guarding her father but this attraction goes & blossoms on their journey to a safe house. Colin is a strong Scotsman but is suffering from his experiences as a soldier, Emilia also suffers nightmares from her experiences with her abusive, bully of a father. I loved how their relationship grew partly to do with close proximity but they also had days of travel to talk & get to know each other. An engrossing romance, which also had the added bonus of tracking down traitors. This book was previously published under the title Highland Temptation, The Highland Knights, book 3, and has been reissued with a new cover and content changes.

***I received this books from Netgallery and Random House Publishing Group in exchange for an honest review***

Right of the bat, Colin had such volatile emotions for Emilia. In the previous book, he along with the rest of the Highland Knights were tasked with guarding Emilia and her father , Lord Pinfield. Emilia runs to the highland knight after having escaped from her father who severely abused her. She is given shelter from him and taken care off by the highland knights. Colin hears about her ordeal and is ready to storm her father's mansion and kill him. He volunteers to take her to his home in Scotland to escape her father. It's not even page 20 and i'm rolling my eyes. I hate insta- love, him almost going ballistic felt like he was in love with her. Simmer down, big fellow.

I love Jennifer Haymore , especially after the House of Trent series but i want her characters to have more interactions and conversation before they get some deep feeling in their nether region and fall into bed. These two character fell in lust with each other pretty fast, it sort of ruined it for me a little bit. They had not even had any intelligent conversation, they were uni-dimensional. I really enjoyed Grace and Duncan's book because they actually talked a lot or maybe my memory is fuzzy. No one just talks anymore. No talk of attraction , just some desire to experience blah blah blah. Emilia is supposedly a virgin but she's more experienced than some of the courtesans in other books. In other books i would not have an issue with it but after seeing Colin being all cray cray , the not so high expectations i had kept dropping lower and lower.

I just couldn't enjoy this book. I wanted to but it just had things i could not stand. Emilia wanting to fight Colin's demons when they just met, God, if i read one more book that has that plot i would scream. Nothing i detest more than instant love and an emotion/dream healing hero/heroine ( especially when it's not PNR) I did not connect with any of the characters. Even the secondary characters from the previous books could not save this one. This is unarguably my least favorite book from Jennifer Haymore. I was more than happy when it ended.

I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.

This is the 3rd book in the Highland Knights series by Jennifer Haymore. I have read all of the books so far and can say that this book can be read as a stand-alone book -- but -- the others are great, so I would suggest you read those as well. The first book tells how the Highland Knights came to be formed.

This book tells the story of Sir Colin Stirling and Lady Emilia Featherstone. In the last book, the Highland Knights had been assigned to watch over Lady Emilia's father for over a year. During that time, Emilia had watched Sir Colin and admired him more than the other Knights. She had also run into him once or twice in the months between the last book and the beginning of this book. So, the attraction was already there, this book just let it grow -- although there is a bit of the insta-lust.

Sir Colin has many demons from the wars -- he suffers from nightmares and basically daymares as well. When he's alone the darkness (as he describes it) reaches out to pull him under and he just knows it will kill him. He's at a really low point at the beginning of this book and feels that his death is near.

Lady Emilia has been extremely abused by her father -- who whips her with a cat-o-nine-tails among other things. One evening her father catches her reading through some very damning papers in his desk and viciously beats her and tells her if she ever tells anyone what she's seen, he'll kill her. So -- she waits until he goes to bed and then escapes to the only sanctuary she can think of -- the Highland Knights house.

When the Knights answer their door they find a limping, bloody girl that they hardly recognize standing there asking for their help. They take her in and the adventure begins. There are many hazards, escapes, kidnappings all sorts of dangers in a trek to Scotland and back to London.

Colin and Emilia are both very likeable and definitely deserve their HEA -- and I love that that their is a lovely epilogue.

This was such a silly book. I regret reading it.

I think one of its chief failures was its assumption that readers had read all of the other books in the series. Faceless names came and went, and I had the feeling I was supposed to know all of them and their backstories. The heroine struck up unbelievably instant, close relationships with all the wives (hiIjustmetyouohlookwe'relikesistershowwonderful!!). The camaderie among the men felt shallow to nonexistent. Sometimes I'll read a book in a series without having read the first books, and it'll make me want to go back and read the others. There's no way I'll do that with this series.

The romance was ridiculous - I think it was supposed to have blossomed before the book began, and all we saw was the instantaneous falling in love and into bed (while on the road and despite the hero's promise to behave), which was dumb. I think love scenes can be tastefully done and add to the story, and they can feel earned when the H/h have gone through relationship struggles and growth first. The love scenes in this book felt cheap and silly and I skimmed my way through them. In fact, I skimmed my way through most of this book.

Also, the language and behavior felt unrealistic and jarred me out of the "historical" setting. Example: "Her cheeks heated for about the millionth time today." The language was so simple and juvenile that I actually went back to check and see if this was supposed to be a YA historical romance (it's not). This is not what I consider historical fiction. This book is a classic example of taking a mostly modern-day relationship and dressing it up with 19th century clothes. Pass.

Book: Saved by the Scot
Formerly: Highland Temptation
Author: Jennifer Haymore
Series: The Highland Knights, Book 3
Book Length: 242 pages
Rating: 5/5 stars
Blog Rating: 5/5 Saltire Flags

As each of the Highland Knights are war heroes and going through some form of PTSD with many scars some are physical and some are mental, but nothing that a good woman can't help them heal and deal with. This is the third book in this wonderful Highland Knights series. This is a re-issue as this book was originally titled Highland Temptation.

Sir Colin Stirling, one of the war hero warriors of The Highland Knights, believes he is going mad and is being chased by the demons of souls he has killed in battle. He believes he can talk to the dead and that one day they will kill him. Of course back in this time there wasn't a word PTSD and no therapists to help. Well not without being committed to an insane asylum like Bedlam. So in other words there was no one to truly heal him or medication to take as there is in the 21st century now. Luckily he had the support and love of his family as they called themselves The Highland Knight who were there to help and protect those in need and the Crown. It made him feel less than a man for his fellow Knight to help chase his demon and nightmares away. He truly felt he would never have a woman to share his life because of the danger he possessed with these demons always chasing him.

English Lady Emilia Featherstone appeared at the Knights door for protection after having been beaten near to death by her own father, the Viscount, Lord Pinfield after snooping through his papers and finding him a traitor to the Crown. She has been whipped badly and went to the only man she trusted, Sir Colin Stirling, a man who once guarded her vicious father. When he sees the condition she is in and how a father who was a Viscount and a Noble he wanted to kill him Plus it obvious he had been beating his daughter secretly for years keeping her in isolation and away from society . Not that he ever liked Pinfield as he could see the type of man he was, but to beat his own daughter with a whip was just !reprehensible! To harm any female made him sick but his own daughter! Colin was furious and filled with rage!

The daughter was sweet, intelligent and good besides being beautiful, the exact opposite of her father. The Highland Knights knew they had to get Lady Emilia and away from London immediately and Colin volunteered and begged it to be him as it was obvious he was the only man she trusted, They decided Scotland would be the logical and safest choice and had to do it fast so some of the Knights could investigate and get the goods on the Viscount while Colin whisks her away to safely to Scotland. Yet this trip is anything but smooth sailing as they go on the pretense as husband and wife without a chaperone.

Emilia is running for her life and Colin is running from his demons! What they discover is a thing called love while he protects her life and she protects his soul. It is really beautiful how they open their hearts and are so protective and fierce of one another, but they are running out of time as her wicked father and his wicked henchmen are chasing after them too! Will Emilia finally confess all her father's sins to Colin? Something she hasn't done yet, feeling some loyalty to the man who sired her. She knows the information she has will have him hanged as a traitor of the crown. Will her father catch up and make his threat come true and murder her and possibly kill Colin too? You will have to read this exceptional story and find out.

This heart pulling, action packed, fast paced, riveting, romantic adventure is filled with intrigue, murder, mayhem, suspense, abduction and more! So many twists and turns, ups and downs that had me at the edge of my seat wondering what could possibly happen next! Just loved this story, read in one sitting as I could not put it down! as I have this entire series! Jennifer Haymore is a magnificent writer and keeps the readers fascinated from start to finish. I highly recommend Saved by the Scot by Jennifer Haymore.

The Highland Knights Series
1. The Spinster and Mr. Scot formerly Highland Heat
2. Her Scandalous Scot formerly Highland Awakening
3. Saved by the Scot formerly Highland Temptation

I have been a fan of Jennifer Haymore’s book ever since I read A Hint of Wicked years ago. She is one of my auto-buy authors, and I have yet to read one of her books that I did not fall in love with her characters. While her stories are always well-developed, her characters are complex and steal the show. I accepted Highland Temptation from the publisher, via Net-Galley, in exchange for an honest review, and I am so glad I had the opportunity to read this remarkable book.

After a brutal beating, Emilia Buchanon runs in terror from the one man who should protect her above all others, her father. Months ago, the Highland Knights had protected her father, and she had met the handsome Sir Colin Stirling.

When he becomes her protector and takes her to safety, she finds out that at last, there is an honorable man willing to protect her with his life. When her father catches up to them, Colin is determined to get her back.

Can he find her in time, or will her father exact his revenge on his only daughter before Colin can make her his own forever?

Highland Temptation starts out fast and stays that way until the end. There is plenty of action from the first page until the end. The plot is well thought out and the romance is satisfying. The chemistry between Emilia and Colin is fantastic. I truly wanted them to find their happy ending.

Emilia is an endearing character. She has not had an easy time of it since her mother passed. Her father is a physically abusive bastard. Under the circumstances, it’s no wonder she is wary of men. Her self-esteem is extremely low, but her inner core is too strong for him to permanently break her. She really comes into her own under Colin’s tender care.

Colin is my favorite kind of hero, a man who has suffer great hardship, but refuses to let it destroy him. He is a true warrior determined to protect Emilia, even if it may mean giving his life to do so. He suffers greatly from what is known today as PTSD. In his time, he believes it’s madness. I loved how Emilia is able to convince him she loves him even when he is in the throes of one of his episodes.

Highland Temptation is a great adventure with plenty of perils along the way. If you enjoy an emotionally-charged romance with amazing characters, then you will love this book. While this is not my favorite one of the series, it is still a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed getting glimpses into the lives of the other knights and their fair ladies. I can’t wait to read the stories of the other still unattached knights in this great cast of characters. Happy reading!

Thank you Netgalley for the free read. here is my honest review as promised:

2.5 stars

Meh- Unlike the summary states, Haymore is no Maya Banks. Not even close.

I have read some of Haymore's books in the past, and apparently liked them. Now that I have experienced more sophisticated writing from other authors within the same genre, my views have changed. I simply no longer enjoy this authors writing style.

This book is written in a style where everything is told and little shown. There is little description of the surroundings, leaving the atmosphere of the world flat.
This style of writing also affected the impact of the internal "demons" of the hero. We never see or experience through his eyes what those "demons" are. We are simply told he has them. Therefore it comes as no surprise that I truly did not feel his pain or torment at all.

The pace of the book is entirely too fast. Most likely due to the lack of meaningful details needed to give the reader an emotional impact. There were also many times where the author glazed over time by introducing a new paragraph or chapter with.. "12 days later"or "3 days later", or "a fortnight later.." IMHO this only increased the flatness of the story.

The romance was virtually non-existant. There were little to no tender momments between the hero and heroine and the first loving scene was entirely too early in the book. I felt little connection between the hero and the heroine and wonder why they fell in love with each other. With regard to loving scenes, there were quite a few, but all were quite unimpressive, short, and repettitve in a way that they all seemed the same just rehashed.

The plot was predictable, nothing that hasn't been done a hundred times over and the conflict didn't give me that feeling of being on the edge of my seat. It was just meh.

Overall I found myself bored and skimming. I most likely will not continue to read more from this author.

Lady Emilia Buchanan is in danger from her own abusive father after discovering his involvement in attacking the monarchy. So who does she go to for help? Colin Stirling, of course. Colin, a Highland Knight, is the most brooding of the band. After the war, he struggles with demons from his experiences. These struggles, that only his closest comrades know of, can be crippling. Colin and the Knights worked briefly guarding Emilia's father when it was believed there was a threat to the viscount's life. Emilia thought Colin was the ideal man from the moment she met him but limited her interaction with him for fear of her father's wrath. Now Colin has sworn to protect her, taking her away from London until the Highland Knights can bring her father to justice. But dangers surround them along the way. The physical threat of Emilia's father and his cohorts as well as the emotional threat of past experiences that harm them both still.
When I read the first book in this series, I was hooked. A band of Scottish mercenaries and the women they love! What more could I ask for? This series gets better with each book. Jennifer Haymore does not disappoint. Colin and Emilia were destined to be together. Each carried scars, emotional and physical from their pasts. Though each believed they were weak, together they were unbeatable fighting their demons, their love for each other helping them to be strong and heal. The action and romance start off with a bang and continue throughout the story. You won't be able to put this one down!

What a wonderful tail of two wounded souls that find strength in each other's arms, Sir Colin Stirling and Lady Emilia Featherstone. Colin is fighting the demons of war that threaten to consume him and Emilia has escaped a treacherous father that beat her every little infraction. On one of the most horrific night of Emilia's life she runs away and straight to the Highland Knights and into Colin's arms. Begging of Colin's help and protection, Amelia has found out what her father and his friends have planned. She knows she must tell Colin, after all that has happened she still feels she's being disloyal to her father but he must be stopped. Colin knows it's a bad idea to travel alone with Amelia to Scotland for he's admired her since the Highland Knights served as guards for her father. He should never touch her, he knows he's going mad from his demons. Colin must protect Amelia not only from her father but himself. Amelia has other ideas.
This is by far the best of the series and I highly recommend you read the series and do it in order.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this advanced copy from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I've really been enjoying the rerelease of the Highland Knights series by Jennifer Haymore. I was utterly charmed by the first book and its sequel unfortunately suffered from a severe case of missing honeyglow. Thankfully, the signature sweetness returned in the third installment, Saved by the Scot. I may be in the minority, but I adore gushy, tender romances. I don't need snarky, mean dialogue to tell me when two people are in love. Shower me with endearments, not caustic jabs. Sir Colin and Lady Emilia were the sweetest little love muffins and I was rooting for them from the first page.

#dexter's laboratory from Animus Rox

Saved by the Scot had no shortage of emotional moments and I loved how adoringly our couple treated each other. This book hinted at the hero's PTSD from war while the heroine offered him solace after his nightmares. She claimed that she could comfort him as well as he protected her. She professed multiple times that he wasn't broken and couldn't scare her off no matter what. If that doesn't squeeze your heart, then I don't know what will. Saved by the Scot was so heartachingly tender and it featured some of my favorite tropes: forced proximity, romantic journey, fake marriage, and only one bed. It still irks me to no end that heroines never embrace the solitary furniture trap. Don't you dare make him sleep on the floor! His poor spine!

Image of my back ooh my back

I don't believe there's any books left in The Highland Knights series unless she plans to release new content with the reprinting of the collection. This series is so sweet and wraps me around its wee Scottish finger every time. That's not a difficult feat when it comes to any Highlander romance and my eyeballs, but I'll give credit where it's due. I've had a spitfire of a reading experience with these kilted cuties and I'm honored to have read this complete collection. I suppose you really can say that I was Saved by the Scot all along.

ARC copy kindly provided through NetGalley though all my thoughts are my own.

wow this was a Rollercoaster! Emilia frantically pounds on the door of the Highlander Knights one night because she was horribly beaten by her father. They take her in and decide to have Sir Colin take her to Scotland to hide because Emilia knows dangerous secrets about her father.

This is action packed but also full of sweet tender moments and tenderness and care for two people that are dealing with intense pasts. Sir Colin is suffering from PTSD and Emilia as well from her horrendous relationship. They help each other to fight their demons and through that and this trek find the sweetest love I've read in a while. This book feels very well rounded with as the amount of action and drama keeps you intrigued but also the romance keeps you rooting for them.

I really loved this and I definitely need to read the others in this series.

Book: Highland Temptation by Jennifer Haymore
Reviewed by: Barb Massabook
Release Date: August 23rd
Rating: 5/5 stars
Heat Rating: Smokin Hot

Another fabulous Highland Knights book in Jennifer Haymore’s latest release coming out August 23rd and it is another wonderful read with another sexy kilted highland Knight. As each of the Highland Knights are are war heroes and going through some form of PTSD with many scars some are physical and some are mental, but nothing that a good woman can't help them heal and deal with. This is the third book in this wonderful Highland Knights series.

Sir Colin Stirling one of the war hero warriors of The Highland Knight believe he is going mad and is being chase by the demons of souls he has killed in battle. He believes he can talk to the dead and that one day they will kill him. Of course back in this time there wasn't a word PTSD and no therapists to help. Well not without being committed to an insane asylum like Bedlam. So in other words there was no one to truly heal him or medication to take as there is in the 21st century now. Luckily he had the support and love of his family as they called themselves The Highland Knight whi were there to help and protect those in need and the Crown. It made him feel less then a man for his fellow Knight to help chase his demon and nightmares away. He truly felt he would never have a woman to share his life because of the danger he possessed with these demons always chasing him.

English Lady Emilia Featherstone appeared at the Knights door for protection after having being beaten near to death by her own father, the Viscount, Lord Pinfield after snooping through his papers and finding him a traitor to the Crown. She has been whipped badly and went to only man she trusted Sir Colin Stirling a man who once guarded her vicious father. When he sees the condition she is and how a father who was a Viscount and a Noble he wanted to kill him Plus it obvious he had been beating his daughter secretly for years keeping her in isolation and away from society, . Not that he ever liked Pinfield as he could see the type of man he was, but to beat his own daughter with a whip was just !reprehensible! To harm any female made him sick but his own daughter! Colin was furious and filled with rage!

The daughter was sweet intelligent and good besides being beautiful, the exact opposite of her father.

Emilia is running for her life and Colin running from his demons! What they discover is a thing called love while he protects her life and she protects his soul. It is really beautiful how they open their hearts and are so protective and fierce of one another, but as they are running out of time as her wicked father and his wicked henchmen are chasing after them too! Will Emilia finally confess all her father's sins to Colin? Something she hasn't done yet, feeling some loyalty to the man who sired her. She knows the informations she has will have him hanged as a traitor of the crown.

Jennifer Haymore is a magnificent writer and keeping the readers fascinated from start to finish. I highly recommend Highland Temptation by Jennifer Haymore and looking forward to her next one!

First let me say I generally like Highland romances. I also like other historical romances set in regency or Victorian England. Monica McCarty’s books are among my all-time favorites. So when I read Ms Haymore being compared to Ms McCarty, I was very excited to start reading and maybe discover a new to me author I would love. Sadly this book was not for me. I can see this book appealing to readers looking for a light, action packed, sexy romance with Highlanders and readers not too interested in historical accuracy.

I’ll explain why, in my opinion, readers looking for another Ms McCarty, should maybe look elsewhere for their next romance fix.
- Ms McCarty’s books are thoroughly researched; contain a lot of details of the time in which the book is set and the major players of that time. In this book the time period remained unclear. Only after realizing that England and Scotland weren’t at war and that the hero had been at Waterloo, it became clear this is a Regency/Victorian historical romance (set somewhere in the 19th century) which just happens to have Highlanders in it.
- Ms McCarty’s writing style, to me, is awesome. She writes crisp, clear, smart and emotional scenes and dialogue with building romance and sizzling sex scenes. Ms Haymore’s writing style is often kind of simple, the emotion of the insta-lust variety, the romance was absent and the frequent sex scenes were not sizzling or a substitute for romance. What also annoyed me, but may appeal to some other readers, is the frequent use of the ‘dinna’, ‘ken’ or other words used to express that the person speaking is Scottish, which, in fact is another difference from the writing style of Ms McCarty, because she doesn’t use those words at all.
- Ms McCarty’s books are believable (both characters and plots). In this book a lot of scenes required me to suspense my disbelief and doubt the motivation of the characters. For example, the hero, Colin, seems worried for the reputation of the heroine and worries about being alone in a room with her. Then goes and does something that is far more damaging (sleep with her in the same bed) only because she didn’t want to be alone while there were a lot of other women in the house who could have stayed in her room. I get it was a plot device used to start the sexual part of this book, but it didn’t make any sense to me considering the entire setting. Another example, the hero and heroine are on the run from her father staying in inns, and choose an inn very close to where the heroine grew up which made the chance of people recognizing her and telling her father a real liability. Couldn’t this smart knight have thought about that and either stop earlier or drive on? And if they were so anxious to get away so soon, why stop at inns at all?

So, this being the first book I’ve read by Ms Haymore and being disappointed, I’m unlikely to pick up another book by this author again. I do however hear from friends that the first book in this series was better. So if you’re reading this review and you are in doubt whether or not to start this series with this book, I would suggest starting with book 1.

I have really been enjoying Haymore's Highland Knights series. Though it seems that with each book, I have been pleasantly surprised, having forgotten how much I enjoyed the previous story until I read the next one. I do recommend that you read the previous books in the series as there is a lot of character crossover and past couples continue to play a role in future books.

We first met Lady Emilia Featherstone in Highland Awakening, as daughter of the odious man that the Highland Knights were hired to guard. Emilia was meek and mild mannered, and we learn the reason behind her behavior in this book. While we knew father, Lord Pinfield, was odious - we now know that he was also abusive and plotting trouble with his cronies. A desperate Emilia, bloody and terrified, runs to the Highland Knights for protection.

Sir Colin Stirling is the Highland Knight with the worst PTSD of the group. His demons work him when he is alone or when he is asleep, so he tries to stay in the company of others. He was the Knight that I was most curious about in this series, and I am just a little bit in love with him. His PTSD was really heartbreaking, and Haymore did a good job drawing us into his waking and night terrors.

The romance between Colin and Emilia moved along at a steady clip. After some time away from her cruel father, Emilia begins to come out of her shell. The attraction between Emilia and Colin gives her something to focus on, and she becomes a lioness that will help Colin battle his demons. Colin has been drawn to Emilia since the moment he first met her in Lord Pinfield's household. He must battle an inferiority complex when it comes to Emilia, but she really doesn't allow him to fight too hard. I loved these two together... they were both wounded birds that were stronger together.

Each installment of this series has had its own action/suspense plot, and this story is no different. The protected from Highland Awakening has turned into a villain in Highland Temptation, and he was truly a vile creature. Lord Pinfield appeared in the story at all the right points to shake things up and keep the plot moving forward. The pacing in this story was on point... while the book is on the shorter side, it reads the perfect length. I didn't feel like anything was missing out from the emotion, drama or suspense of the plot.

Confession: Due to a sleepless night, I finished this book all in one sitting.

Gotta love beta heroines.

Emilia encapsulates all that is right with beta heroines. Normally, I don’t usually like the damsel in distress, but I loved the sense of danger that came along with this story. Emilia is afraid of her father and after suffering his wrath, she runs away from home. With the knowledge of nefarious plots that he intends to fulfill. She suffers the guilt of being a bad daughter and feels like it is her fault. Is blood thicker than water? In her case, not. I loved the fact that she let Colin take care of her. They did not have a tumultuous relationship, it was more of the tender, sweet love.

Emilia has scars.

Heroes make for an interesting character when they’re broken, battled and bruised. However, I love it even more when the heroine has those kinds of baggage as well. She has scars, both physically and mentally and it was interesting so see how she would surpass those challenges. It makes her stronger in the end, especially with a certain confrontation.

Unfortunately, I did not read the previous books in the series.

I wish that I had because it would have been easier to understand what the Highland Knights were all about. They all have a part to play and the others make an appearance in this story as well. I loved their interactions, their teasing, and their loyalty. However, knowing their backstory might have made me like it even more. I felt like an outsider. Other than that, the story focuses on Colin and Emilia’s love arc.

Overall, even with my sleep deprived mind, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Can’t go wrong when there are Scottish hunks on the loose. Both characters developed nicely and their romance was sweet.

Well done Jennifer! I greatly enjoyed this novel. I'm a huge fan of the Highlands Knights. I must say, the previous romance in the series lacked a bit of shine (comparing to what I know the author's talent is) but with this one we are back to the path I have loved so much in the first Highlands Knights' book. And this is the naturalness of love.

Yes, of course there are glitches now and then, big ones too, but what is marvellous is how the protagonists show and accept the love they share. They embrace their feelings towards one another in the most natural way. There's no fight against unwanted feelings, no refusal of them, no lies. They deeply love each other and they say it. Thanks the Lord!

Obviously I love some drama in HR, but being it a very common trait in the genre, although in several different shapes, sometimes is just refreshing and "restful" reading about smooth love.

Now, let's be clear, there's drama here too, treason and abuse are central in Highland Temptation, but what I was referring to above, is the relationship between the protagonists, Emilia and Colin. They openly adore each other BUT around them there's a very threatening thunderstorm going on.

If it wasn't already clear they are the strength here, I loved them, they are so kind and caring, she towards him and he towards her. The way they protect each other is the sweetest thing. They both have to fight their own demons and stubbornly decide to both face the other's struggles. Also if it means do it forever. I WANT A RELATIONSHIP LIKE THAAAAAT!

The plot is catching, especially the first half. It's never boring. Go for it!

ARC REVIEW

More sweet, sweet highland spies. Book three of Jennifer Haymore's Highland Knights books greets us with a beaten and desperate Emilia Featherstone. We meet her in the last book, the daughter of the repugnant Lord Featherstone whom the Knights were charged with protecting even though there was something very suspicious about him. Now with Emilia at their doorstep they have proof that he is up to no good. Colin Sterling is a tormented soul and thanks to Waterloo he can't sleep at night without waking up from night terrors. The only thing that seems to soothe him is Emilia.

To get the information they need they need Emilia to be safe, the one person she truly trust is Colin. Everyone is aware of Colin's feelings for Emilia and it the obvious he the only one for the job of protecting her. While the rest of the Knights are taking care of Featherstone and his cronies Colin is taking her somewhere safe. But taking her up to Scotland isn't as easy as they thought especially since they are trying to keep their hands off of each other. Featherstone isn't going to give up easily, he knows it was his daughter who betrayed him and now he wants her back so he can suitably punish her. Colin will stop at nothing to keep her safe.

Overall, this was a good read. I love this series and I am really enjoying seeing each of the Scottish war heroes get a HEA. All though I did miss an in between novella, I'm upset I didn't know about it. I really did like Colin and Emilia they seemed to be perfect for each other, and their romance was unconventional but very nice.

As always Jennifer Haymore writes another rioting romance that I just couldn't put down. I've been impatiently waiting for Colin's story and I am definitely not disappointed. Once again, this story is just as action and adventure packed as the others. Though it has its dark elements which only adds the love of the story. The Highland Knights are war heros and survivors and each has their own demons to deal with, Colin Stirling more than most. He has been haunted by the voices and visions of the battlefield since he came home and has come to believe that they are determined to kill him one way or another. He must some how figure out how to deal with them so that he can keep the only woman to ever capture his attention safe.

Ms. Haymore delves in to plots against the monarch, a daughter who knows too much and has to decide whether to stand by her evil abusive father or the country she loves. She takes you on a cross country trek of survival filled with blood thirst revenge and determined killers, haunting vision with violent outbursts as well as kidnappings, physical abuse, and sheer determination to survive,

She will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first sentence to last word, routing for victory and perserverence.

This story can be read as a stand alone but I highly recommend reading the previous ones in the story so you better understand the secondary characters and their relationships to the hero and heroine.

4.5 stars

I really enjoyed this book - Colin has been my favorite since the beginning of the series and I love, love, love wounded heroes - and this man is wounded in mind and spirit. Emilia is also wounded - but her wounds are physical and emotional. Together they bring out the best in each other and begin to heal.

This book has it all, a sweet love story, steamy love scenes, a really evil villain, a lot of action, life or death moments and a very satisfying ending.

I think what I liked best about the book was that Ms. Haymore didn't downplay Colin's demons, she didn't have him fall in love and then suddenly they went away - that was refreshing, because it is true - love does heal, but not everything and having a partner that will stand by you and support you even in the worst moments is priceless and much more precious.

The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars was because there was a major problem with the formal address of Emilia - as this is an advanced copy, I hope that it is resolved before publication - because it irked me and lessen my enjoyment of the book.

I would recommend this book - it is part of a series, but it could easily be read as a stand alone title.

I saw this book on NetGalley and it intrigued me. I did not realize it was part of the Highland Knights series but that did not affect reading this as a standalone book. When I finished it, I did go buy the previous ones.

Lady Emilia Featherstone is caught by her very abusive father reading some documents that prove he's plotting against the Crown. She fears he will kill her and flees to the home of the Highland Knights, who at one time protected her father and home. The Knights believe she is in danger and decide to hide her at a safe house in Scotland.

Sir Colin Stirling was one of the Knights who guarded her home and she feels safe with him. Colin has his own nightmares from being held and tortured as a prisoner of war. He is attracted to Emilia but fears he will harm her during one of his nightmares.

They travel to Scotland as a married couple and fall in love along the way. But her father has sent men to track them down and he does catch up with them. They survive and decide to return to London, handfasting themselves before leaving Scotland. They, along with the rest of the Knights are on her father's and the rest of the conspirator's trail.

There's a lot more going on that I won't spoil, especially the ending chapters because I hope you'll read this book. I enjoyed it. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this ARC.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story was well written, the plot kept me turning the pages. I couldn’t put it down. The feelings between Emilia and Colin were already growing at the beginning of the book so there weren’t any ups and downs between them as they were falling in love. There is plenty of trouble caused by her evil father though. I enjoy stories where the H&H already are together and face things together. My heart broke for the “demons” that were chasing Colin but I loved the fact that Emilia wasn’t going to let them win and destroy Colin. Also, the way Colin encouraged Emilia and made her feel like she was worth something since her father had almost destroyed her spirit. He was an evil, evil man!!! The relationship between Emilia and Colin was so sweet, gentle and loving. He promised he would take care of her and keep her safe and he did just that!!

I’ve read the previous books in the series regarding the Trent House and their stories and have loved them all. You can read this book as a stand-alone but it is so much better reading these books in the order they are written. Check them all out!

I was pleased to be able to read another one of Jennifer Haymore's Highland Knights stories. This was such a good book. I liked both main characters: Lady Emilia Featherstone & Sir Colin Stirling. Both characters are struggling with their own demons, both physical and emotional. Someone is planning to have the ruling monarchy and the successive princes assasinated and Lady Emilia discovers the plot. She runs to the home of the Highland Knights, a physically beaten/whipped woman begging for their help. Sir Colin and Lady Emilia are acquainted from when he was hired, along with the other Highland Knights, to guard her father, Lord Pinfield. Their story unfolds with them trying to flee London and the dangers it holds for Lady Emilia.

I feel that this story is well written and flows well. There are a few sexual scenes that I thought were well done and did add something to the story more than something that was just thrown in there.

I received an uncorrected proof of this book, in e-book format, in exchange for an honest review, from Net Galley and the publisher, Random House.

This was a pretty good read that kept my interest. The characters were developed with thoughts and feelings of their own. I liked the chemistry between Sir Colin Sterling and Lady Emilia Featherstone.
Colin is a part of the Highland Knights and has been through some tough times. He has nightmares that keep him from enjoying life. He has battled the darkness within his soul and feels that his life will never be normal again. Then a woman from his past comes to him for help and he obliges.
Emilia is a woman without someone to be her hero. Her father is dealing in treason with others and after she finds out he beats her. To make matters worse, he says he will kill her if she shares this with anyone. So Emilia runs to the Highland Knight who she remembers from her past.
Colin is a wounded man, but when Emilia seeks his aid, he complies. They journey to Scotland so she can heal and feel safe.
This was an adventure for both of them. Learning to trust each other and the love that keeps them strong. I appreciate Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.
