Peter Sedgwick was a translator of Victor Serge, author of a number of books including PsychoPolitics and a revolutionary socialist activist. He grew up in Liverpool and won a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford, where he became a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain. In 1956, after the Hungarian Revolution, he left and joined the Socialist Review Group, later the International Socialists (forerunners of the Socialist Workers Party). He wrote for the group’s press while also getting involved in the activities of rank-and-file members. He was opposed to the International Socialists' renaming themselves the Socialist Workers Party in January 1977 and refused to join the new organisation. However, he remained dedicated to the far left. Christopher Hitchens called him "a noble remnant of the libertarian left"[1] and dedicated his book Letters to a Young Contrarian (2001) to Sedgwick's memory.
For the 15 years until his death Sedgwick earned his living as a lecturer in politics at the Universities of York and Leeds.
In his book PsychoPolitics (1982) he explained the severe reductions in psychiatric services that were already taking place as an effect of the "politically correct" conceptions of mental illness, such as those of the anti-psychiatry writers Michel Foucault, R.D. Laing and Thomas Szasz, being exploited by governments to justify spending cuts.
Peter Sedgwick was found dead in 1983 in a canal near his home in Shipley, Yorkshire. He was editing some of the works of Victor Serge at the time of his death.
حالا همه چیز نظم بهتری گرفت. چیزایی که راجبشون خونده بودم ارتباط بهتری با هم پیدا کردن و تونستم با بقیه کسایی که تو این حوزه تأثیر گذارند و زیاد راجبشون نخونده بودم بیشتر آشنا بشم. پیشنهاد میکنم اگر مدتی هست که درگیر فلسفه خوندن شدین اما بنا به خاصیتی که تاریخ فلسفه داره هنوز تو این فضا سرگردونین این کتاب رو بخونین. اینم بگم که تمرکز اصلی کتاب از ابتدا رو تاریخ سوبژکتیویته هست و بعد با پیشروی در این مسیر به جنبشهای فکری مختلفی که پس از دوران مدرن شکل میگیرن میپردازه. در میانههای کتاب کمی هم به مسئلهی اخلاق، نقدهای فیلسوفان پسامدرن به فلسفهی مدرن و در نهایت نظامهای سیاسی اقتصادی هم پرداخته میشه.
فلسفه رو خیلی جدی دنبال نمی کنم و قرار بود توی یه گروه چند نفره از بچه های دانشگاه، با این کتاب، فلسفه ی اروپا رو شروع کنیم به خوندن اما وافعا ترجمه بدی داره و بیشتر از یک فصل نتونستیم ادامه بدیم. این شد که بعد از اتمام فصل اول باهاش خداحافظی کردم🤕 ؛ هرچند که فلسفه خون های گروه میگن ترجمه ی بد کتابای فلسفه یه چیز عادیه
Given that it explicitly states itself as an introduction, this book does give a certain amount of help to those wishing to understand European philosophy, but I don't think it gives enough to help the reader formulate their own interpretations and opinions. It's very linear in its explanations, asking rhetorical questions and supplying an answer as if it is the absolute, indisputable answer. The reference section is very useful, on a high note.
