Dame Esmeralda, the Purrsident's littermate, has been catnapped. Xander de Hunter, Catamondo's Sea Purrtector hurries to Jamaica to help rescue her, even though Jamaica is one of Dogdom's strongholds. Could this be a trap?
Jeanne Foguth began her career technical writing, but her love of suspense, whether it be present, future or in an unknown galaxy inspired her to write the novels she wanted to find in bookstores. Jeanne and her husband have lived from the arctic to the tropics, as well as from yacht to off-grid mountain home. She loves using vivid colors and flowing shapes in her oil paintings as well as creating edible landscapes.

As a cat lover I absolutely adored this book. Xander de Hunter's adopted humans have decided to live onboard a boat which has resulted in him being assigned the responsibility of being the Sea Purrtector. As they arrive in Jamaica, he receives an urgent email marked with an ominous red claw signifying its urgent. The message directs him to solve the catnapping of Dame Esmeralda which recently occurred on that tropical island. Xander not only uses his humans' computer but also has a collar with all sorts of high tech abilities, making him a feline version of James Bond.
As a feline, he has a natural dislike and suspicion of canines, especially the boxer named Valentine on the boat moored next door. Fortunately, he's leaving to pursue the mystery regarding the missing Dame Esmeralde and hopefully find her unharmed. Along the way he hooks up with Sharky, a black and white cat with a somewhat mysterious and possibly suspicious past. He's not sure whether or not he can trust her, but she knows her way around and can show him how to get to the location where an important meeting will take place with the cat in charge of the island. Among other things, Sharky excels at quoting numerous bits of wisdom from a large variety of Native American tribes.
I'm a real stickler for detail and this book absolutely rocks. The author's experience and travels bring the story to life, whether it's the description of the boat, Jamaican culture, tropical terrain and weather, mention of the Egyptian cat god, Bastet, or any number of other delightful bits of trivia such as the American presidents who owned cats, it was a highly entertaining as well as an intelligent read. The imagery of Jamaica was like being there and the mannerisms and dare I say thought processes of the feline characters were totally credible to anyone who has ever been owned by a cat.
The story takes a variety of twists and turns which keep you guessing all the way to its surprising conclusion. There are numerous places that had me laughing out loud, yet the story possesses an allegorical flavor as you view humans and their foolishness through the wisdom of feline eyes. This is one book I must say I was sorry to see end because I enjoyed it so much. If you're looking for a well-written light read that takes you on a vicarious adventure through the wilds of Jamaica as seen through the eyes of a highly intelligent Siamese cat, then this is definitely the book for you. I am definitely looking forward to reading more about Xander's adventures as well as other books by this author who knows how to make a story come alive.
The Red Claw Book Review Let me preface this review by stating that I rarely read fiction. That being said, I am concerned with spoiling this excellent story by revealing anything of a plot.
This is a wonderful story. It reminds me in a way of the Warriors series by Erin Hunter that my children were in love with years ago.
This book is sort of a Warriors meets James Bond. There are high tech gadgets, espionage, and lots of adventure. This is an excellent story that tells the story of life from a cat’s eye view. If you are one of those people under the misconception that people own cats, this book might not make much sense to you. As most cat people know, cats actually own the humans.
This is such a refreshing book to read. So many that I have read recently have been poorly written. The few fiction books I have read recently have had plot holes or jumps. This book gives plausible explanations along the way for all that takes place.
I would have to give this book five paws up. It is an excellent read for people of all ages. I can see that it would be a wonderful book for young teens, young adults, and, yes, even 54 year-old men like me.
The author of this book is a friend and gave me a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. I would not post a review that did not give my honest opinion.
Xander is a special agent working for an organization known as Catomondo. As a Purrtector, he is called to action whenever the need arises, and his exploits are legendary. Inhibited only by the restraints of his humans and their boat, he is only able to travel where they go. That makes his job more difficult when he's summoned to investigate a catnapping in Jamaica. He has to put all his feline skills to the test to reach his destination and get to the bottom of Esmeralda's disappearance.
I loved the addition of cat lingo in the story (purrtectors, whispurring, purrsonal, etc). The author has done a fantastic job of portraying the feline mindset as well as describing his feline quirks and movements. His disdain for dogs brought amusement to the story, and his sidekick Sharkey was a great addition. Both characters have led interesting lives, and they are presented in a well-rounded fashion.
It was loads of fun to read the emails between the cats. If you've ever wondered what cats might message to each other, this is certainly the book for you! My favorite scene had to be the "fish cleaning". It had me grinning ear to ear. An excellent story, and highly recommended for anyone who would like to experience the world through the eyes of a cat.
This is a family friendly book for a family who loves cats like mine. The kids looked forward to bed time and a chapter a night or two. They loved the series so much we bought all the books out so far for their school library. Since then many of their friends have picked it up and compared it to Warriors another cat series but less confusing characters. The only non-positive I have heard is that they can not take an ar test for it and rack up points.
When we first figured out that in the series the cat was going to live on the water and in a boat the kids and I were like well this is not going to go well at all. Thankfully Xander (the main character which is a cat) likes water better then our cats do... well he is learning to. I am sure if I moved mine onto a boat they would murder us!
These books have cats, adventure (suitable for all ages), made my kids laugh until covered in tears, and made them think... it also showed them sometimes the simplest answer is the best answer.
If you like cats, do not, I ask of you, miss The Red Claw. It is filled with anarchic wit…undercover work and gadgetry. James Bond has nothing on Xander de Hunter.
The quality of the writing is undeniably good. This book is very genuine and it is for those who are more devoted to this genre--than one that is pretty popular. That is why it is not getting my five-star rating. It is not something I would usually choose to read
This was an excellent book suitable for young teens through adults. Xander de Hunter is the main character, he is like a cat version of James Bond complete with a high tech collar. As he works to rescue a catnapped cat, he makes some friends along the way.
