Mark Ravenhill's Faust (Faust is Dead) is a dark and often brutally funny journey through a world of virtual reality
The world's most famous philosopher arrives in Los Angeles and is greeted as a star. In a round of chat show appearances, he announces the Death of Man and the End of History. When he meets up with a young man who is on the run from his father, a leading software magnate, they embark on a hedonistic voyage across America. But in the play's bloody conclusion, they discover that not all events are virtual.
i think i liked this more a biiiit more than shopping and fucking. it had a more cogent storyline and it was easier to follow. it had a similar tone to shopping and fucking but it was still quite different: it had fewer characters, it was a smaller story overall. but it had the same intensity and quality of tragedy.
It reads as a piece of media from its time, making predictions about the future, from an age when we had no idea of the actual impact of the internet and the 24-hour news cycle.
At the same time, some predictions are eerily correct. The violence is there, the importance of commentary over actual events is there, the oversexualization and the distancing from emotions and the real world that visual media offers is there.
I have to reread Shopping and Fucking, there's no way the same person wrote these two.
"The event itself is just a shadow, a reflection of our analysis"
Takže Ravenhill podruhé a naposled. Jediné štěstí bylo, že to je vážně útoučké a měla jsem to přečteno za takovou slabou půlhodinovou cestou tramvají. Opět jedno velké WTF, co se tady vlastně děje. Sex, divné metafory, krvavé oči, ... No prostě stačilo. A název ani nebudu komentovat, jsem se akorát zbytečně navnadila.
