One, Two. Who to kill? Three, four. You better open your door. Five, six. Cut or nick? Seven, eight. Don’t party too late. Nine, ten. Watch your gate. My name is Kayla. Would you like to play a game with me? I promise to only make you bleed and possibly scream. Are you ready for some fun?
USA Today Best Selling Author T.L. Smith loves to write her characters with flaws so beautiful and dark that you can’t turn away from. Her books have been translated into several languages. If you don’t find her in her home town of Queensland, Australia you can usually find her travelling around the world to sitting on a beach in Bali, to exploring Alcatraz in San Francisco or walking the streets of New York.
“One, Two. Who to kill? Three, four. You better open your door. Five, six. Cut or nick? Seven, eight. Don’t party too late. Nine, ten. Watch your gate.”
I am the minority here, and I hate not rating this higher, but it is what it is and I can't change how it confused me no matter how much I want it to.
Reading the description of this book, I was instantly drawn, even making one of my impulse buys because of it... but as I was reading it I had no clue what the hell I got myself into. It wasn't bad, I mean the writing and style was good, great even because not once did I feel the need to DNF it, I wanted to stick with it and see what happens next, it was the story that confused me.
I spent the first half of the book wondering where things were going, following two different stories and by the time the stories collided it was almost predictable, HOWEVER ... the last half felt rushed for me, things were happening at super speed and I couldn't piece it all together in my head, making it impossible to believe. Even the romance aspect of it, which if you know me I always try to romanticize everything, but this one I couldn't. I read where the romance should have been, but I didn't know the how's or why's.
There are some disturbing scenes that is not suitable for everyone, doesn't really bother me, but it is probably best to get that out there. Will this stop me from reading more of the author's work, of course not, it was unfortunately just my confusion got in the way of me liking this story.
I enjoyed this but pretty much predicted from about 20% how this was going to go and would have liked more development. I didn't really connect with Kristy and Kai so that spoiled it a bit for me. But it was ok!!
So, this is one of the most enticing blurbs I've read in a while for a book... stop right now and go read it if you haven't already. It completely set off my alarm bells and said run, run, run... so... of course I didn't. **smirk** Don't let it scare you off though... this book is a crazy ride and not as dark as the blurb makes it sound. I was completely glued to the pages from start to finish. This is a great book choice for those who like dark, gritty and twisted reads! It's also a romance... but it's not your normal romance... and with that blurb why would you expect it to be?? I would love to give you a rundown of the characters but I can't because it would absolutely ruin the suspenseful joy of figuring out the twists and turns. This is a book that is best going in blind without knowing what to expect. Avoid spoilers if you can... I am not a huge fan of dark reads that revolve around serial killers but I really, really enjoyed this one... Does it have an HEA
TL Smith has outdone herself this time with this dark tale full of twists and turns I did NOT see coming . I loved all the complex characters in the story and totally and completely fell in love with the male lead . TL Smith is my favourite author of recent years and I admire her ability to always leave me feeling a little raw and exposed but truly satisfied .. Come to the dark side , we have cookies ! xxx
Wow what a phenomenal read! TL Smith has outdone herself with this captivating read! This story is fantastic. The twist will make you gasp out loud and I only saw it right before the book announced it... It's so cleverly written! The characters are believable and realistic. From blood & gore to love & romance you won't be taking long to read this as you simply can't put it down! I loved it! Fantastic!
5 +++ STARS OMG what a ride!!! Dark romance at its best. If you like suspenseful, twisted, dark romantic stories, then I highly recommend it. I loved it!!
Where do I even start with my review ? To be honest I really had no idea what I was in for, the synopsis was so intriguing but gave nothing away.
The opening chapter was a somewhat twisted and chilling I really didn't think this was going to be my cup of tea, however I was soon completely captivated loving the characters and the story which was so different from my usual reads.
I just had to read this book in one session - I couldn't put it down. This is so well written, the big twist in the story is mind blowing I really wasn't expecting this, often I can predict where a book is going but no not this one - this was total shock factor for me!
Would I recommend this book - most definitely, this has to be one of my top favourite reads, I will be looking out for more by this author.
5 SHARP SHOOTING STARS!! **I received an ARC from the Author for an honest review.**
I will admit that I had this book and the twist figured out by the first couple of chapters...maybe I am just twisted...Anyway it still made for an awesome read. I love all the books with the dark, depraved and demented things. The definitely make great reads. There were a few things that I did not see coming and I won't mention them because I am not a spoil sport.
So, when this book starts we meet Kayla. She is a very twisted woman who likes to take justice into her own hands and punish those who abuse woman. She is bold and get what she wants.
Then, we meet Kristy. Quiet, studious and a bit of a shut in, unless when she goes to class. She starts to go out and meet people, but she is constantly getting stares from people and is confused by some of the things they say to her.
Throughout the book it switches from Kayla & Kristy's POV and follows them while they are both trying to get what they want. What is it they each want? Well, I guess in a roundabout way they are both trying to get the same thing and so much more.
I really enjoyed the ending of this book. The author really took time when she wrote the ending of this book and didn't give it an unrealistic rushed ending. I can't say anything other than it was exactly what I thought should have happened.
I absolutely loved this book! I couldn't put it down till I finished it. Between Kristy (the good girl) Kayla (the bad girl) and Kai (the gorgeous man) I just didn't know what was going to happen next. T.L.Smith is a great writer! And yes I was crying by the time I got to the end of it but I was Happy. I really recommend this book to anyone that loves a suspense story and a romance!
I cried while reading this book. There was so much going on. I thought it be a dark read but it really wasn't. Messed with your head some but who don't love that.
The synopsis is amazing...I lasted until 50% of the book and then skipped to the end to see if I was right in the way the book was headed. Ugh, I love the premises for many of T.L Smith's books but it's not clicking for me. It's also the writing style for. However, the biggest impediment for improbability of the whole plot makes this book seem fantastical and improbable in ways that it shouldn't. Unless a book is targeted as fantasy or paranormal I don't want to spend the majority of my time trying to figure things out. But anyway, the plot development was a definite no for me, but I loved the fresh creativity of the premise.
I read this book in one sitting. The beginning really got me interested. I got so pumped up! Somewhere in the middle of it I lost a bit of an interest, and just about when I tought what the heck, T.L. delivered her final punch. The final verdict: so worthy of my time.
“I see the man that directs me to what jobs I have for the night. You see, I do the jobs that no others want to do. I clean up the mess that murderers, rapists, degenerates, and the scum of the earth make. Men that are high and mighty that can get away with their crimes so easily, because they have the money to make their problems disappear. But what most of them don’t expect... is me.”
A thrilling and strong start to his romantic suspense, but the second half seemed rushed, and I'm still confused with how my questions were answered.
Pure Punishment drew me in with that blurb...I mean, really! Then, when a dear friend, Tanya at Bookhooking, wanted to buddy read this one, I jumped on it. The beginning of this book started so strong with thrilling mystery and intense characters. It didn't really matter that I figured out the twist in the first chapter or two; the clues were easily deciphered at the beginning of each chapter. I was loving this book!
I step into a private room that has no furniture, though it is littered with blades, shooting stars and guns. [...] Out of all these weapons, there's only one that tickles my fancy. The shine and brightness of the stars with a skull embedded in the center. My signature blades.
Kayla is intense and out for vigilante justice. She's tough as nails, accurate with her weapon of choice, and manages to take the bad guys down with flair. Not to mention, she's a slut and as twisted as they come. Kristy is a sweet and shy college student studying criminal justice. She's a bit of an introvert and only dreams of romance she finds in novels. She's bullied in her dorm and about campus by Bianca, a true bully who looks down on Kristy simply because she can. Kai is perfect. He's the object of interest for both Kayla and Kristy - Kayla because of the challenge and mystery, Kristy because he is protective and such a romantic hero.
"What is this?" His hand reaches up, brushes away a strand of hair that has fallen across my face and he places a soft kiss on my lips. "This is us, trying to find a way against all odds."
The story is told in alternating viewpoints of Kayla and Kristy, and when the story opens, we meet the chilling life of Kayla. Each chapter is preempted with clues and dates, as the reader will go day to day with both Kayla and Kristy. The first half of this book had me enthralled and unable to put it down. It is gripping, chilling, and thrilling with characters who are so very real and reciprocals of each other. However, the second half of the book seemed very rushed to deliver answers, as if the author was running out of time and on a deadline, unable to properly "show" me the answers. Instead, it felt as though the answers to all questions surrounding Kayla, Kristy, Kristy's family, Tyke, and Kai were "told" to me in an effort to wrap it up quickly.
"I just want you, nothing else but you. I can take you broken or crippled. But the one thing I can't take is you dead. Do you understand me?"
T.L. Smith certainly has a talent for writing a story that captures the reader's attention. There are a few errors in the first half of the book, but nothing that can't be overlooked. The second half of the book held a lot more errors and a few holes surrounding Kai that had me flipping back a few chapters to find answers, only to find none. Some of the "wrap-up" seemed almost too easy and didn't mesh with the struggles Kristy has experienced in her life. There was even a forced drama added in with regard to Kai's and Kristy's past, albeit in a fleeting moment of drama that was glossed over quickly; the entire history was told in one sentence. The first half of the book is all of 4 to 4.5 stars, but the second half of the book knocked the overall rating down to 3 stars. I will still recommend this book to those who want a gripping, entertaining, and quick read.
HOLY WOW I MEAN WOW JUST YA HOLY WOW !! I read this ABSOLUTE 5 STAR READ in a matter of hours and just hated to have to put it down. I recall getting the cover reveal sign up and being totally afraid by the synop !! Afraid but intrigued so I knew I had to sign on for this. Not to mention that the cover is gorgeous , I mean really stunning I just loved it. Plus I loved the Take Over series so of course a no brainer. This book was as crazy as I expected but also nothing I expected all wrapped into one !! We get a dual POV that I love and then at the end we even get a little extra POV for the epilogue which is great and also led me to wonder if we will get more ??
Kayla is a crazy twisted chick , that you can tell just by the synop. She is beautiful and very strong willed. She gets what she wants and punishes people for crimes they have committed. She gets her orders from Tyke and she fulfills them easily. Of course as much as she loves to watch people suffer she also loves the release from sex. Tyke refuses her over and over which drives her crazy and now she seems to have found a new target. A hot stranger she meets at a bar and has a very memorable moment with , this moment ends too quickly and by the next time he sees her he is not interested.
Kristy is our other POV. She is a quiet lonely college student. She doesn't go out much at all and spends her time in class and studying for her degree. When we meet her she has just met a detective that is all too interested in her and her new BFF Julia who has some secrets of her own !! In a moment of uncertainty Kai swoops in a saves Kristy and once he enters her life things start to change and secrets start to come out. There has to be some connection with Kristy and Kayla , but what ??
You go back and forth , day to day following the 2 girls through life. It is easy to see something is there but the little pieces you get really keep you hooked. I had so many ideas in my mind for what it was and how they all tied together but the few things I was right about didn't even ease the shock of the actual truth !! Hard book to review without spoilers but if you enjoy a semi dark mind f*** then this is your book !! I knew I would have fun with this book and I just can't get over the conclusion !! There is of course the craziness in there of Kayla's job , the innocence of Kristy's life and then the secrets , there are so many secrets floating around. To top it off there is also a love story forming. I am a Kai fan all the way. This guy is freakin awesome !! I just love him so much !!
Thank you thank you for this story and I HOPE ANYONE AND EVERYONE WHO READS THIS REVIEW BUYS IT READS IT AND LOVES IT !!

Hats off to TL Smith, Pure Punishment has to be the best book she has written so far. The deep raw emotion she expressed with her characters was painfully beautiful.
A twisted life, a song that haunts her and a past that slowly starts coming back to her. This book is everything you want in a deep and thought provoking read. It will leave you hanging on until the very end. Just when you thought you had the plot figured out, think again this book will keep you on your toes!
Kristy Wilde is quiet and smart. Studying was her thing, she didn't want, or have time for anything else. Keeping to herself was easy, or so she thought. After a very persuasive conversation with a detective who is helping out in one of her classes; she reluctantly agrees to go for coffee. Detective Black is a jerk, he’s cocky, he’s arrogant and so self assured. She’s not impressed, who is this guy that has no filter?
"Yep whoever said life was like a box of chocolates needs those chocolates stuffed up their ass".
Kayla is dangerous, seeking revenge on those who get away with heinous crimes, she craves blood, the colour, the noise it makes when it's dripping onto the ground. She loves her job, she was the avenger for all that had suffered. The thrill of killing is all she lives for. She is promiscuous to say the least, she likes to have control over every aspect of her life, including sex. Her boss Tyke is her only dampener, she wants him, but he’s not interested.
We had a ridiculously hard time writing this review! It’s one of those books where even mentioning a slight section of the book would give something away. It was so twisted and so brilliant we cannot speak highly enough of it. If this is what T.L. has been up to we cannot wait to see what she has next.
Kristy - I was beyond speechless and extremely touched with the dedication of this amazing book. This book had me flicking pages like a maniac the twists kept me hooked and wanting to know more.
T.L we could not find the words to do Pure Punishment the justice it truly deserves, we were both blown away with book.
Kayla- This book took me somewhere so deep that I found so unique! Not many books surprise me and this one definitely did! Congratulations on a truly thought provoking read.
This is a story of two girls with a shared past and one which bonds them together in the future. Through right and wrong, they live side by side but without ever setting eyes on each other. Let me introduce you to Kayla and Kristy.
Kayla is a cold blooded killer, she kills to exact revenge for the pain experienced at the hands of others, bad men who take pleasure in hurting and abusing the innocent. Kayla thrives on a diet of sex and violence, she won't let anyone hurt her or Kristy.
Kristy is a quiet, unassuming college student who, unbeknownst to her, has Kayla looking out for her as she tries to protect her from her past.
Both girls have been targeted by one man, Detective Kai Dean, who has fallen in love with Kristy but in doing so has attracted the attention of Kayla.
There is another mysterious man who is also looking out for both girls, Tyke Black, also a detective but Kayla's employer and Kristy's teacher. Will it be Tyke or Kai who will save Kristy though and will the mysterious Tyke ever reveal himself to Kai?
This books is fast paced and full of twists and turns. It is completely unexpected and unprecedented and a story which will remain with me for a very long time. I hoped for a HEA and I got one but the way Kristy repeatedly rejected Kai didn't flow for me and I found it a little unnecessary, especially when she pushed him away after reconnecting with him, but I get where the author was heading and trying to draw out their HEA. It was a shame for the story to end at 88% though, I so love a story to reach the very end of the book!
All in all though a very enjoyable, dark read and one which is full of suspense and intrigue.
Pure Punishment was when I finished this book and then awake at 3am the next morning still going over the characters and story in my mind and wanting Kai & Kristy and Kayla & Tyke back in my imaginative world. My first story by this author and what a privilege to receive an ARC. This is a story that has just blown me out of the water and I would pick this up again and read it and still learn something new from these characters.
T L Smith twists and turns and takes us on a journey of self discovery for the characters but the twists and punishments screw with you. The way the author introduces each character and then entwines us to them, share their issues, deceptions, anger, love and sorrow. For once I did not pick the curve ball until it was too late and I sat there looking at the pages asking myself how the hell did I miss that - true genius in story telling that is, I was so intent on learning about Kai, Kristy, Kayla and Tyke with all the sexual chemistry flowing and subsequent frustration it was probably how I got sucked into it all.
The song, the grandmother, the history, the sacrifices, the revenge, the redemption and connections all come crashing together. I appreciated how each chapter showed a perspective from a main character and then carefully entwined the storytelling to the next chapter. We may have jumped a day, night, week or a year but it still connected and flowed and I did not feel as if I lost a critical component of the end result.
God the ending, loved it, tears in the eyes, speechless, taking chances, accepting faults and forgiveness. The brain is connected to our heart and soul, it needs to be nourished and this story does that in the purest form.
HOLY SHIT BALLS!!! WOW!!! I don't know if I'm speechless or if just want to scream it to the world to read this book!! I think I'm still in shocked mode after reading reading that ending! Ugh if it wasn't because I was so sick I would have read this book within hrs! It's addicting. The more you get into the story the more you want to figure out what wtf is happening. Who all these characters are. I swear I was totally lost for a bit and I didn't know what was going on. But little by little it started making sense and I started figuring out what was going on. Seriously it was like WOW! I mean I kinda had figured it out but it was just crazy once I read that I was right and it creep me out lmao! Because holy crap I don't know how to explain it. I just know that it was crazy.
The characters will suck you in. They will make you want more of their story. I loved that about this book. It was so well written. The story itself was crazy and unique. But just reading it and having to say wait! What! Lol was amazing. I loved Kayla she was crazy. And she didn't give a shit. She did what she was told and did it right . She was a total bad ass. Kristy so sweet but oh god so fragile. I didn't know if I liked her or I felt bad for her self esteem. But it all makes sense now. Tyke well I don't know he was a total mystery from the beginning. I liked him because I couldn't figure him out. Kai omg that character was amazing. With both Kayla and Kristy. He was hot and sexy and dark all put into this amazing hot body! Julia oh this character couldn't have been any better. She was just who Kristy needed! This whole book was a total mind fuck. I would recommend it to everyone!!!
This is the first book I've read by this author so I was a little skeptical, but I really enjoyed this book. When I received this I immediately checked out the blurb and I had to start reading it.
We have Kayla. She's a little twisted. She's a badass and she had an attitude, I liked her immediately.
Then we have Kristy. She's shy, quiet and a pushover, and that bothered me. I was just screaming at her "speak your mind, damn it!"
And we have Kai. He's a bit of a softy. At first I thought he was going to be this fierce alpha male but, alas, he is not. At least, not to Kristy. I'll admit I was a bit disappointed.
This book is well played out. everything comes together smoothly and I'll admit I was kind of surprised. Now that I think about it, I should have connected the dots but I didn't. The thing that bothered me though, is Tyke and how everything just wrapped up so quickly. I feel like there could have been more. I.e. Tyke. It was said that he was just someone Kristy had made up, but what about when he shows up in the middle of her class? Even the teacher introduced him. And how was it that Kayla got her throwing stars? Tyke made them, but if he wasn't real, did she make them herself? And when Tyke went looking for Kayla at Kristy's dorm, Bianca, Kristy' s bully, saw him walk away. She even made a comment on it. I just felt like there was a lot that needed to be explained but wasn't. So I'm a little disappointed with this. It is a good book, but I think the ending kind of fell flat. If there was more, I think this could've been a 5 star read.
So with that being said, I'm not necessarily going to recommend this but at the same time I'm not going to warn anyone away from it, either.
Wow Pure Punishment is a crazy ride of a book. We get the POVs of Kristy and Kayla. Kayla is a killer who kills guys who have done bad things. She gets her assignments from her boss Tyke. Tyke is somewhat of a mystery. Kristy is the polar opposite of Kayla. Kristy is a hard working college student. She's shy and studying way to much.
A little into the book I was confused. I wasn't sure if Kristy and Kayla where different people or one in the same. At that point I put the book down and went into one of the book groups I belong to and ask around. No one knew the answer because they hadn't read it yet. My next stop was T.L. Smith FB page, where I found this message "Pure Punishment is a book you need to go into blind, spoilers will ruin it. Trust me when I say, take that baby in blind". Thanks T.L., I took that message to heart and continued reading. I am really glad that no one gave me any spoilers because spoilers for this book would have definitely spoiled it.
Kayla and Kristy live two different lives. There story pulls you right in. Some of the thing Kayla does are crazy. Tyke was very much a mystery through most of the book. Kai is a detective who takes a liking to Kristy. They have a good relationship. He shows up in both Kristy and Kayla lives. He seems to even know Kristy's grandmother. When reading I could help but feel that something was off with Kai and I wasn't sure how he actually would fit in the end.
The Epilogue is in Kai's POV and we get something about his past that makes me hope that there will be another book. This is one you should one click.
This book was crazy awesome. I was about half way through before i realized they were two different girls.. lol I didn't pay attention to the names. But I was hooked from the first page and didn't want to put it down. On to the character reviews...
Kayla was a crazy chick and did not care to show you if you deserved to see. She was only hurting and killing those that deserved to be. The bad part is that she loved it and craved it. Making one bleed was the only therapy she needed. I loved that she was a hardcore b*tch but the fact that others underestimated her abilities and she showed them what she was capable of was the best.
Kristy has had a hard life losing her parents and living with a less than cuddly grandmother. Always feeling that she didn't measure up, she took off to college to change her life. Kristy is the innocent college girl that hasn't really been around the block just yet. Although she catches the eyes of two men she still shys away from both of them.
Tyke and Kai are both detectives that have their eyes on Kristy. Kayla works for Tyke and has a thing for him but Tyke wants a strictly work relationship. Kai is all about Kristy and can't stay aways from her. All he wants to do it protect her but so does Tyke. So who will finally steal Kristy's heart? My favorite guy was Kai because he was such a broody and conflicted man. Yummm...
The author is a genius. I was so thrown with this story. Walking through my house saying OMG OMG... T.L. did an amazing job and I look forward to reading more of her work. Five bleeding stars have been granted :)
Pure Punishment by TL Smith is unlike any story I have read before. It is dark but sexy and has an amazing twist to it. I literally could not put it down and read the whole book in one sitting.
Kristy is a shy and sweet college girl who just wants to stay to herself and study. She lost her parents at a young age and was raised by her drunken grandmother. She's never grabbed a man's attention before so she thinks it's strange when she strikes the interest of two different detectives.
Kayla is a bit of a demented girl who gets her kicks by torturing and killing men. Not just any men, but the bad ones. Rapists, murderers, and pedophiles. She loves it! When she isn't serving justice, in her own way, she plays. She uses men, just to find some kind of release and feel control.
Kristy and Kayla are living their own separate lives when they both began to fall for a detective named Kai. Although, they both are falling for the same Hawaiian God, as Kristy refers to him, they never run into each other. They just both go on, dealing with everything in their own ways.
Kristy and Kayla are both being followed and their every moves are being watched. Why? Will Kayla get caught hurting people? Will Kristy leave her comfort zone and let Kai in? And then, when you least expect it, the twist comes in!
TL Smith did an excellent job writing Pure Punishment! It was a highly suspenseful story that kept me on the edge of my seat. It was sexy, romantic, and sinful, with a hint of darkness. It's definitely a book that you will remember!
Fantastic read, the books just keep getting better from this author …
Another dark and twisted tale from TL Smith and this one certainly does not disappoint. This book is full of suspense and some romance thrown in for good measure and keeps you guessing right till the end.
One of the things you learn about this book quickly is that there is a lot more to it than first meets the eye. It focusses on two women Kayla and Kristy, polar opposites of each other. Kayla is one messed up individual and she’s definitely not a woman to cross. Kristy, on the other hand is gentle, kind and comes across as innocent, she just wants to get her studies finished with no real possibilities of anything else for her.
Kristy works for Tyke, a man who only wants a strict working relationship, but Kristy wants more, much more. Kai (a police detective) has a firm interest in Kayla and most definitely cannot stay away from her. He wants her and helps to protect her.
Unfortunately, due to the plotline I cannot go into too much detail without destroying the book for you all, but let me tell you, it’s a must read. I loved this book TL Smith and I will be lining up for more from you in the future. Five star read for me.
*** ARC provided on behalf of the author for an honest review ***
Meet Kristy. Twenty. Studying at college. She’s shy. Doesn’t have friends. Keeps to herself. Her secrets are her own.
Meet Kayla. Your worst nightmare. She’s confident, independent, strong. She always gets what she wants. She always wins. Her job? To punish. To hurt. To deliver pain. She craves it. She needs it. Her ultimate goal? To punish.
Two very different woman. But they have something very much in common.
Kai.
Kai. Sexy as hell. Independent and strong. His job?
Sorry guys, but we aren’t going to tell. Your just going to have to read it to find out.
Pure Punishment is a brilliant read. We soaked up every word on every page. We couldn’t put it down. It’s dark, heart warming, sad and evil. It’s full of so many twists and turns, you will be left sitting on the edge of your seat until the very end.
One, Two. Who to kill? Three, four. You better open your door. Five, six. Cut or nick? Seven, eight. Don’t party too late. Nine, ten. Watch your gate.
We thank TL Smith for giving us the opportunity to read Pure Punishment. A definite 5 star read and should be on everyone’s TBR list.
