Perhaps She Was Too Beautiful! Perhaps the brawling colonies would have been safer for a plainer girl, one more demure and less accomplished in language and manner. But Charity Woodstock was gloriously beautiful with pale gold hair and topaz eyes -- and she was headed for trouble. She was accused of witchcraft by the man who had attacked her. She was whisked from the stake by a highwayman in whose arms she found joy but no sanctuary. Fate flung her from the manor of a Dutch patroon to the simple hut of a Quaker, from pirate ship to plantation. Beauty might have been her downfall, but Charity Woodstock had a reckless passion to live and a fine determination to give herself only for love. She would challenge this new world--and win.
I'll make this short and sweet. The heroine is put through hell. I'd love to tell all but then I would spoil it. I would say you know the typical bodice ripper recipes and this one has all the necessary elements, told with a flair better than most. The first half of this book has it's share of evil men. No wonder the heroine is angry. I dug the heroine. She could be impetuousness, strong willed, even scheming. Hey a girl has to survive eh? I kind of dug her because of her imperfections. There are several love interests here. You're not really sure who she will end up with at times. Although I was happy with who she ended up with. I'd say overall I really enjoyed this one. This was hiding from me. I didn't see any of my bodice ripper friends recommend it, so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this. There are some pretty sleazy characters drawn very vividly. Sherwood seems to have a talent for that. I look forward to reading more of her books. I wish I could do you a nice detailed review but my two year old ensures that I do not embellish too much. I'll add some shelves to give you a nice gist of what your're in for if you pick this one to read.
Pretty entertaining, if a bit over-the-top. The OM the h thinks she loves is married to the OW the H thinks he loves! What are the odds? Not likely, even in a HR novel from the 1970's.
And how many times can the h play second best or one of many??? It got a bit silly!
Still, it keeps you interested enough to finish it.
Charity was sure put through the wringer for a good portion of this book! She faced heartache, heartbreak, and rough living (to say the least!) and managed to survive and persevere in the end. True love wins out!
Even after reading To Love A Rogue (which I pretty much loved), this book was a decent read. I was afraid it was going to suck in comparison, but it didn't.
