Very enjoyable collection of short stories/vignettes (published in 1963). The stories are in roughly chronological order, and are all associated with our nation’s developing naval presence. The first story followed Concord and Lexington , and described a family of O’Briens from Machias, Maine. The author’s writing style reminds me of Albert Payson Terhune’s. The stories went through the time of the Barbary pirates and the War of 1812. There were also a few illustrations of some of the ships described.
