A global pandemic has killed most of the world’s population. Alone, Monarch Winslow struggles to survive. An empty house, gas station food and the hope of reaching a refugee camp in Austin, Texas keep her alive. Then one night an injured man breaks into her house. A dangerously sexy man.
Monarch is wary but intrigued. Corbin claims he’s a mechanic and she can’t reach the camp without a working car. She needs his help. But he needs hers, too. As the days pass, they work together and a tenuous relationship turns to turbulent desire. But Corbin refuses to discuss his past and his secrets lie between them. Falling for a man she knows nothing about could endanger her life, as well as her heart.
Meantime, a hundred miles away, is safety, perhaps even surviving family. She hopes. But Monarch is no more sure of that than she is of Corbin...
"She'd made a deal with the devil. And apparently the devil wore a bright orange jumpsuit."
The P-virus has decimated the world, and Monarch is on her way from Dallas to Austin to find out if her brother and niece survived. But with a broken down car, she has taken up temporary residence in a small house close to a convenience store. Then one day while out scavenging, she sees a Department of Corrections bus crash. She barricades herself inside her home, but that night the door crashes open and the most gorgeous guy decked out in orange forces his way into the living room. He's wounded and needs help. She trades food and bandages for some help from the man who claims to be a mechanic.
The apocalypse can mean a new start for Corbin, and he has a thing for redheads. After a few harrowing circumstances, Corbin builds up trust with Monarch. Oddly, the transitions to the sexy times were abrupt, but they were hot nonetheless.
The details on the virus and the situation were sparse given how isolated Monarch and Corbin were for most of the book. This story is more about their relationship than dealing with a disaster. Read it for the love story and the sexy times, not for decent post-apocalyptic storytelling. I like how Trish Arcangelo forms a character, so I would read more from her. 3.5 rounded to 4 stars.
This post-apocalyptic romance is the first novella I've read of Ms. Arcangelo's, and I was very impressed.
Our heroine, Monarch, has survived for months out on her own after a pandemic sweeps the earth, causing mass casualties and global chaos. When we meet her she's eking out a living in an abandoned mobile home, stocking up on supplies and trying to get to a refugee camp where there may be family members to reunite with. That in itself is super admirable. I'd be lying if I said Breakout didn't make me reflect on how poorly I'd fare in the event of an apocalypse...
The manner in which our main characters meet adds mystery to Corbin's character and serves as the beginning of a continuing theme to their relationship: trust. I was as curious about his past as Monarch was, and I enjoyed their progression from wary strangers to passionate lovers.
The beginning and the last 20% of the book were my favorite parts; not that the middle wasn't solid, I just prefer more life-threatening danger kind of plot points as opposed to couples drama. But, that's clearly just a personal preference. (I'm fully aware I have a tendency to be hard on main characters in this regard.) Speaking more neutrally there really is a good balance between internal and external conflict in this story.
This is an engrossing and sexy read, and you absolutely want Monarch and Corbin to beat the odds despite their situation seeming so bleak on the surface. It also makes you stop to think about what's really important in life--something I know I don't pause to do as much as I should.

Monarch Winslow has survive for months alone since a pandemic broke out. Struggling to make it and planing to go to a re figure camp in hopes of finding family. Suddenly a strange injured man shows up and even though she is intrigue by Corbin she is not sure what to think of him. Breakout is the first book I read by Trish Arcangelo and I have to say I really liked it. Not been a big fan of post apocalyptic stories I have to sayBreakout keeps me interested all the way. I really liked Monarch and the fact that even if she was scared or was not sure what to do she was still a strong female character. The writhing is very good and will be adding Trish go my TBR list. Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock. I give this book 5 fangs!!!!!!
LOVE THIS BOOK! Could not put it down! Great characters. Monarch is the kind of girl you can see yourself being friends with, and Corbin... well... yum. The chemistry between the two is HOT! Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a good romance novel!
Not my favorite apocalypse story, but not the worst either. This novella focuses more on the relationship between a couple, rather than how they survive the aftermath.
