Katherine Moreland and Ian Clarke loved each other once. As they reunite to watch their daughter Zoe get married, the past haunts the present and they wonder, if maybe they have a future. If maybe their story isn't quite done yet.
Katrina is a seasoned spinster with an active imagination, a love of romcoms and a keenly critical nature. She's a college professor by day who writes romances by...weekend. Right now she also happens to be on summer vacation. She enjoys yogurt, sparkling water and her three cats, who don't appreciate her love.
Encore is a second chance romance following Katherine and Ian, who end up back in each others lives at their daughters wedding after they have been divorced for over 10 years. That’s about all i can say for a synopsis, because not much happens here.
I really love the second chance romance trope and this one just didnt hit the mark. There were many time jumps all over the place and POV switches randomly. We even got a short POV from Zoe (the daughter)’s fiance, who was so insignificant to the story, because the romance is about Zoes parents. With the time jumps, it felt very confusing, as nothing was explained. At one point I thought that Katherine and Ian were back together but it was a sex scene from the past. I only knew this because later, towards the end is when they got together.
When they got together again, it was so lackluster for a couple who had not seen eachother in such a long time. There was no discussion, no apologies, no nothing, just a heated sex scene and they were together again. It was all resolved too quickly in my opinion.
I love Katrina Jacksons ability to write healthy relationships and strong female characters though. Zoe was such a strong character, though we didn’t get much from her and her relationship with Sean was so healthy and adorable. Katherine was also so headstrong and took charge of her life and dreams, maybe a bit selfish, but still. I did enjoy that aspect of the story!
I really want to make my way through Katrina’s backlist but they aren’t proving to be on the right track 😫
That was such a sweet story, with some bitterness, regrets, hurt but overall so much love. Loved how much they loved Zoe so much; how Ian loved Katherine, with its flaws and the hurt, and the insecurities; how Katherine reached out to him and move on past the hurt and pride... Also the little clues about Sean's heritage were fun. It was a nice change of pace from the previous books of the author, yet still intense and well written.
Ms Jackson is a great writer. One of the reasons I love reading her books is the emotions you feel of each character. And in this book, you feel the pain of lost love. The regret. I so wanted them to get back together that I think I felt the same anxiety Ian felt. A great read.
Great book! Very well-written, fun, touching, full of human truths. And the juicy bits... This is definitely a new favorite author for me! Highly recommend!!
Ok, this is over the top sappy, and so full of typos and mistakes that I was ready to offer to pay for the copy editor myself because, even as I was railing over the errors tears were rolling down my cheeks. This is the most full-on romantic book I have read since the Time Traveller's Wife. I loved how the time flows back and forth between past and present and between Zoe and Sean and Katherine and Ian. I could really feel the scalding regret about past mistakes. Jackson does a beautiful job of exploring all different sorts of love in this short book: friendship, family, lovers young and old. She also explores the tensions between those ways of loving. Despite its flaws, this is one of the best books I've read in ages. Accept the flaws and focus on the beauty--that is, after all the message of the text.
I really enjoyed this. Encore is a lot more emotional than other books by Katrina; they tend to be heavier in eroticism. Not to say this didn’t also have some great heat happening! It was sometimes hard to follow the timeline as it switched between past and present, but I loved the history between Ian and Kathrine, heartbreaking as some scenes were. Definitely recommend~
Reread Jan 2022: goodness, this short story is such a good book! I love the way Katrina explores and executes the second chance romance between Katherine and Ian, while also showing Zoe and Sean’s love and marriage. This has so many things Katrina does so well - chosen family, a little bit of grief, and fantastic emotional explorations.
