Big Vamp on Campus

Rate this book
In Molly Harper’s newest paranormal romantic comedy set in her beloved Half Moon Hollow, a vampire princess must learn how to navigate life as a college student—including living with her messy, annoying, frustrating new roommate.

Ophelia Lambert, four-hundred-year-old vampire princessand college freshman, suddenly finds herself domesticated by humans and forced to suffer the indignities of dorm rooms, communal bathrooms, and a roommate with sticky fingers.

As one of the hundreds of undead venturing into post-secondary education, Ophelia has a lot more to learn that just “undead studies”—she has to learn to get along with her fellow vampire classmates and worst of all, her human ones, along with getting back into the good graces of the World Council for the Equal Treatment of the Undead.

Can this once all-powerful vampire princess balance classes and campus life with romance, human- and vampire relations, and not sinking her teeth into her annoying roommate?

Short novella. There was a mystery left hanging. I'm left to wonder if this will come up later. It was cute and in ways unpredictable. I thought a few times things would head down a path and then they didn't. I love this author. I normally don't read novellas, but I did this one. I wasn't disappointed. It kept me entertained.

After hiring an assassin to kill a romantic rival, Ophelia lost her job as the head of the vampire council. As penance she is forced to enrol in college and live in the campus housing with all that entails...room-mates, shared bathroom and petty theft. But the worst of all, the guy she loves, the one she hired the assassin for is suddenly more interested in going to the gym with his bros, watching football and drinking beer from a yard glass.

When building conflict into a story it's not all that uncommon for authors to go big. They create hyper characters and situations. There's nothing wrong with that but Molly Harper is always trying new things, looking for different stories to tell. And this is one of those stories. She's taken something a lot of people, particularly in the US have experienced (dorm life) and thrown vampires into the mix. But don't expect explosions. Big Vamp on Campus is a small story. A brilliant, well told, completely addictive, 5 Star, small story.

DNF at 50%. I guess I don't care enough about Ophelia to get into this short. Oh well I'm sure I'll enjoy the next full length novel.

This is a novella-length entry in the Half-Moon Hollow series, which is a spin-off of the Jane Jameson series. It's told from the point-of-view of Ophelia, who has been the "bad" guy for most of the books to date. (As much of a bad guy you get in a light and fluffy paranormal romance comedy series anyway).

For spoilery reasons Ophelia is no longer the boss of the local vampire group and is instead going to college and being forced to stay on campus in a residence hall. Which is all kind of rough for a 400-year old 16-year old vampire who's been used to being top dog in the paranormal world. While she's at college with her bloodmate Jamie, the reasons that she's doing her time at college have put a strain on their relationship and she's very insecure. Being separated from her younger sister for the first time in centuries isn't helping things either.

There's not much to this, but it's very funny. Ophelia is pretty amoral, but she wants to be good enough for Jamie, who's very much a good guy. The story is a combination of Ophelia learning to be a real girl and a supervillain using her powers for good. There's also lots of setup for further books in the series.

If you like Molly Harper books, you'll love this one. Obviously not a good jumping on point though.

Fun and funny, just like I anticipated. Pretty much if it's Molly Harper's paranormal books and Amanda Ronconi narrating the audio... just shut up and take my money. Total happy place. Amanda makes everything better and Molly sure knows how to write funny vampires. Though, I will admit this one turns it up to an '11'... centuries old vampire forced into 'residence hall' living on a college campus with an emo Twilight newbie vampire as a roomate. *yeah buddy* *grabs the popcorn*

Ophelia... you are one seriously messed up little vampire. And devious. Before I was not rooting for you at all, but now I'm ready to hand over a case of duct tape just to see what fresh hell you come up with.

4 Vampy Stars!

Ophelia has been a unlikeable character throughout the Half Moon Hallow books. She was turned into a vampire as a teenager and has spent the past few centuries instilling fear into other vampires....she’s extremely intimidating and unforgiving. Unfortunately, for her, her bullying has finally caught up to her in The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire. Her punishment is to attend the University of Kentucky with her boyfriend, Jamie, and having to interact with...normal people

I have to say, I wasn’t expecting much from Ophelia, I was pleasantly surprised and was cheering for her by the end of this novella! This was a great addition to the series and I’m glad I gave Ophelia a chance and even happier that she redeemed herself, now I’m glad she has sweet Jamie, he brings out the best in her, I finally see what he sees in her.

Ophelia is one of my favorite characters, she is pretty old but she is young too I know that kind of contradicts itself. But she really hasn’t been able to be young, now she is getting the chance to do what people her again ( not actual age ) do.

She and her man are still going strong but she needs to find out who she is without him or her sister. She gets to find friends, and be a girl. It really is a great little side story.

Love Amanda’s narration!

This was a really good story. I actually ended up liking Ophelia a lot more than I thought I would.

Ophelia is a 400 year old vampire that was turned in her teens so she looks permanently young. She transformed her (much) younger sister because she didn't want to lose her and got censured for it but was allowed to keep Georgie. Ophelia worked for the Vampire Council for years and gained much power but also was constantly looking over her shoulder from others wanting her power. Ophelia ended up falling for a teen human, Jamie, who got hit by a car and transformed into a vampire by Jane Jamison (see Harper's other series). Ophelia lost her job with the Council and sentenced to a normal life and college as punishment for trying to kill a woman she thought was a competitor for Jamie's affections. Thankfully, the college is the same one that Jamie is going to so it allows them to be together.

Jamie is a rather affable and laid back type of guy. When Jane transformed Jamie, she became his guardian (in addition to being his sire) and had control over when he was allowed to move on to college and all. Jamie took some time off to adjust to his being a vampire but now is headed to college and wants to major in sports medicine.

This story is focused more on Ophelia than Jamie. Ophelia got stuck in dorm housing so she has to deal with a horrible roommate (I'd want to hurt this girl too). Ophelia and Jamie are together but as classes start and Jamie starts making friends, they don't spend as much time together and Ophelia worries about it. Ophelia ends up with a project to work on and it doesn't help things with the roommate but it does bring her into contact with some human girls that she becomes friends with. Things start working out for Ophelia and she realizes that maybe this is a better life than what she had before. The story ends with Ophelia doing much better in her new life and her relationship with Jamie back on solid ground and heading the way of HEA.

This was a really enjoyable story. I have to admit that I wasn't sure what to think about Ophelia having her own story...I was curious but wary. Thankfully, Harper did a fabulous job at bringing Ophelia around to be a better person while making it believable. This was a very good addition to the series and I'd recommend this story for fans of the series. People that haven't read the series could probably still enjoy it but it might be a bit confusing as the backstory is explained some but it's kept brief.

* note - I listened to the audio version of this book and (as normal) the narrator did a great job.

Series: Half-Moon Hollow #5.5
Rating: 3 stars - I liked it

This was an interesting novella because it was from Ophelia’s POV. I wasn’t a fan of hers in this series because she is a very entitled, spoiled vampire. Surprisingly though, this was a good novella. Ophelia actually becomes more human in this story and actually makes friends. I also appreciated that it wasn’t just a whole story about her and Jamie’s relationship. It focused on Ophelia finding what she likes and learning to relax.

For a character I didn’t like, this story showed that there was more to Ophelia than she has shown previously, and I always enjoy those kinds of surprises in character development.

Finally the Jamie and Ophelia story we've been waiting for. This was more Ophelia's than Jamie's, but she's had more of a life to tell about anyway, and more recent upheaval too. The idea of hundreds of years-old, stuck up Ophelia living in a college dorm, with a roommate, was innately funny, and seeing how it played out was enjoyable. I liked the insight into her insecurity, and her history and relationship with her little sister, Georgie. And seeing why her anxious, overly analytical ways were a good balance for Jamie's laid-back perspective. It was fun until it did that sudden ending at 76% thing! Gah! I'll never learn that all of these things have previews of the next book whether I want them or not and will always end suddenly even when the story doesn't feel like it's anywhere near the end. This story really felt like it wasn't finished too, there was no crisis, and there were hints about big problems that hadn't manifested yet. (What was that list that Jane supposedly asked Ophelia for but then knew nothing about?) Maybe it was more of a bridge between the last book and the next than a complete story in-and-of-itself.

Because… I don't like to read chapters of books before the come out normally, but I looked at this one to see who it was about and it's a continuation of the campus drama. I guess the Half-Moon Hallow formula was getting a bit repetitive. Not completely, she does a better job of varying her formula than most romance authors, and the group of friends makes it great. But the friends circle is awfully crowded now too. Anyway, it'll be on campus with Ophelia's new gal pals. And one of Gigi's old chums, for added continuity. Should be fun. And I'm sure Jane and some of the gang will be stopping by to check on Jaime and Ophelia too.

Ophelia, a pseudo-villian spanning the whole series, is sentenced to attend college for the false expense reports she filed...while hiring a hitman. I didn’t expect to like this, finding her boyfriend, Jamie, pretty boring previously and Ophelia, well, a villain. But it was snarky in a delightful way, and I actually get both her and Jamie.

I was a bit disappointed in this novella. Since we already knew the characters of Ophelia and Jamie, we should have jumped right in and gotten more out of this story. It ended up being more of a filler and a lead in to the next novel coming out in 2017 The Accidental Sire.

Big Vamp on Campus focuses on Jane Jamison-Nightengale’s “child” Jamie and his girlfriend, Ophelia, as they start their first term at the local college now that they are catering to undead students. We met Jamie in Nice Girls Don’t Bite Their Neighbors when Jamie is the victim of a hit-and-run accident and Jane turns him into a vampire. We have watched the downfall of Ophelia from scariest member of the vampire Council to her disgrace in trying to get rid of Gigi.

Ophelia attempted to get rid of Gigi since Gigi is Jamie’s best friend and she was helping him apply to college and trying to take him away from Ophelia. Ophelia believes that Jamie is her “blood mate.”

The majority of the story focuses on how the stuffy and pompous Ophelia, who is used to having all the vampires bow and scrape to her power, and how she deals with life as a freshman nobody in a dorm situation. Freshman must live in the dorms and share a room so her money and connections won’t get her anywhere. It is also a mixed human-vampire dorm and Ophelia hasn’t spent time with humans in a century or so. So we gradually see the rehumanization of Ophelia as she adjusts to dorm life and meets some human girls. We also see her Skype with her little (psycho) sister, Georgie, who is being forced into a period of a second childhood by Jane who has taken her in while Ophelia is in school and is treating her like any child of her physical age.

While I say it focuses on Jamie and Ophelia, in truth Jamie doesn’t make it into too much of the book. He is spending a good deal of his time with his new dorm mates playing video games. I wasn’t sure as I was reading this whether or not Ophelia was going to realize that her obsessive focus on Jamie was based on the fact that she hadn’t spent much time around other attractive vampires her own age. While Jamie is playing video games, there is another student in Ophelia’s class, who is considered a vampire hipster, who prefers going to museums and concerts, things that seem to be of more interest to Ophelia. Would she finally realize that she and Jamie weren’t really blood mates and that she was obsessing over the only attractive male in her physical-age bracket?

While the story seemed to be going that way, we suddenly curve back to Jamie and the new flirty hipster disappears into the background. To me it seemed a bit jerky that this sudden contemplation by Ophelia whether or not she wanted to go out with this hipster-vamp is quickly aborted and she is suddenly back in Jamie’s arms having sex. It is one of the human girls who warns her off hipster-vamp and maybe it was simply a set up so Ophelia can have human girlfriends? Not sure yet.

For fans of the series, it is a quick read and there are tiny plot points to note which I am sure will be part of the next story. How many other hints are in there, we won’t know until the next book comes out.

In the end, we don’t exactly watch Ophelia mellow out, but we do see her realize that there is more to the humans than she gives them credit for and she starts to open up to having some girl friend time and loosening her nervous grasp on Jamie.

In the end, this novella is just like I’m Dreaming of an Undead Christmas. Rather than standing on its own, it ends as more of a lead in for the next book which will feature two other students from the college, Gigi’s ex-boyfriend and one of the human girls that Ophelia befriends.

Big Vamp on Campus is a fun “slice of life” with a side of growing pains. We get to see how vampire baddie Ophelia Lambert is dealing with being cut off from her precious Council. It’s definitely not the best place to start the series, although I think it can be enjoyed by a newbie as a standalone short. However, to understand the full impact of Ophelia’s banishment, one really needs to see her when she was at her prime, welding power for the Council.

I didn’t think I’d ever really like Ophelia; she certainly has never been a sympathetic character. And after what she did to Gigi back in The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire, I honestly wasn’t looking forward to getting a story from her POV. However, leave it to Ms. Harper to pull this off. Not only do we see some of the brilliant crazed 400-year old vamp she used to be, but we witness Ophelia learn to adjust to life outside her comfort zone, growing and developing into a relatable, likable character.

As I mentioned before, the book reads more like a slice of life or a few chapters from a larger story. New characters are introduced, and some strange and mysterious things are afoot - basically par for the course for the residents of Half-Moon Hollow. It’s pretty apparent that this novella is setting the stage for a larger story; however, it’s not the next book, Where the Wild Things Bite. It looks like Big Vamp on Campus actually comes after the next book.

The narration by Amanda Ronconi is highly entertaining. In the past, I’ve struggled with keeping characters straight from book to book based on voice alone because each is a different first person POV narrative. However, because it’s been a while since I’ve listened to another book in the series, I didn’t experience any of that confusion, and found the narration to fit Ophelia’s personality. With just a touch of sarcasm and a whole lot of charm, Ms. Ronconi brings the denizens of Half-Moon Hollow to life (even when they are actually students at the University of Kentucky!)

All-in-all, an enjoyable listen, entertaining story, and a must for fans of the Half-Moon Hollow series.

I decided to get Big Vamp on Campus (Half-Moon Hollow #5.5) by Molly Harper on audiobook as I had stuff to do.

I got such a kick seeing Ophelia trying to fit into the college scene. It was a whole new world for her. She had to learn how to make friends, and deal with Jamie having friends. I kind of felt bad for her trying to organize time with Jamie when he had so much going on.

Ophelia didn't really scare me in the other books, and I also didn't dislike her. I think it was her little sister that swayed me into liking her somewhat. So seeing her out of her element made me feel a bit bad for her, even though her reactions were funny as hell. After I thought about it, her reactions to some things would probably even be appropriate to other girls college or high school age. This was a good experience for her.

I am curious about the connection and communication with Jane. I'm wondering what kind of deal has really been struck here.

But in the end, the lessons Ophelia learns not only help her fit into her new life, but lead her and Jamie to a different level in their relationship.

Big Vamp on Campus was a quick read with a few laughs. You'll love Ophelia's outrageousness as she tries to aclimate to college living and not being queen of the Council. Be prepared for little on a plot line. We pretty much concentrate on Ophelia and her life on campus. Definitely a fun read though.

About the book: Release Date June 6, 2016

You've asked for years when Ophelia and Jamie would get their own story and now it's here! How will Ophelia adjust to living in a dorm room now that she has been banished from the Council and forced to matriculate at college with Jamie? Communal showers! Horrible, pretentious roommates! Humans who try to be FRIENDS! The horror!

•••••••

REVIEW: BIG VAMP ON CAMPUS by Molly Harper follows four hundred year old vampire Ophelia Lambert as she is serving out her sentence, for inappropriate expense reports, as a student of higher learning. Our heroine has been removed from her position with the ‘World Council for the Equal Treatment of the Undead’, and has been forced to attend the University of Kentucky as a co-ed student with both the living and the undead.

Told from first person point of view (Ophelia) BIG VAMP ON CAMPUS looks at student life for a vampire used to big expense accounts and fancy rooms. Ophelia must learn to economize, make friends, and endure the idiocy and disrespect of her roommate Brianna-a recently turned vampire/wannabe Goth princess who makes Ophelia’s life a living hell. Ophelia’s one saving grace is the knowledge that her boyfriend Jamie also attends the University of Kentucky but Jamie’s presence is few and far between. When Ophelia is forced to work with Brianna on a special project, Brianna suddenly goes missing and no one is the wiser.

Molly Harper’s BIG VAMP ON CAMPUS is a quick read; a fast paced novella that pulls the reader into the mind of a four hundred year old vampire adding a little bit of humor and fun while revisiting with two characters who have played secondary and supporting roles throughout the series. Harper allows for some background information about Jamie; and reveals the incidents leading to Ophelia’s sentencing so as not to leave the reader lost or confused. My only complaint is the cover which would lead the reader to presume that the story line focused more so on Jamie but herein lies the confusion-BIG VAMP ON CAMPUS is Ophelia’s story and Jamie plays a very small role throughout. Jane Jameson’s presence is noted through emails and texts. There are a couple of ‘open-ended’ scenarios that will hopefully be addressed in a future story line or in the installment THE ACCIDENTAL SIRE due out in 2017.

Review at The Book Nympho:

http://thebooknympho.com/2017/01/big-...

This is a special review which is akin to Jennifer's Read It, Track It where I am reading books for the COYER Winter Storm Challenge.

The Half-Moon Hollow series has been somewhat hit or miss for me. But what is always a home run is Molly Harper's humor and the narration of Amanda Ronconi. And Dick Cheney.  I did read Big Vamp on Campus rather than listening, but I may go back and add the audio.

I enjoyed learning more about Ophelia. Her reaction to college life and developing personal relationships is interesting and understandable. I don't feel like I know Jamie very well and consequently I don't care about him too much. I'm not sure why some girls become her friend but I like it.

There is one part where Ophelia is told Jane wants her to email information and then Jane doesn't seem to know about it. That loose thread has me worried.

Overall, this was fun. I'll likely revisit it on audio. It looks like the next book, The Accidental Sire, available in July 2017, picks up where this one ends.

This was a nice trip into the lives of some of our Half-moon Hollow and Jane Jameson's people. With the cover being of a guy, I thought it would be in Jamie's POV but it was told 1st person in Ophelia's POV which I'm really glad of now. Jamie is easy to understand but even listening to Ophelia's thoughts, she is harder to understand. Her snark and humor made me a convert as I have really disliked her at points in the past and wanted better for Jamie. I thought this put them together nicely though for a while there I thought maybe there would be a break up. This insight into Ophelia made me like her more and accept her relationship with Jamie. It was fun to see Ophelia have to deal with something so out of her element and how it has a positive effect on her.

There is a happening that is left in the air but it doesn't effect the storyline to be able to call it a cliffhanger. You are just wondering, "what was that about?". I guess we will see in the next book.

Better than i thought it would be.

Short, sweet and simple.

I felt that Ophelia retained more of her personality from the previous books than I thought she would.

Now let me rant a bit (and possibly illegibly) about age differences in Vampire books:
The creepy thing about age difference in my opinion is not that one person LOOKS older and the other person looks younger. In my mind it's mainly uneven amounts of experience that bothers me. So when a four-hundred year old woman stalks and seduces a seventeen year old boy. It's super creepy! Even though she LOOKS seventeen. I'm twenty-eight and wouldn't want to be involved with an eighteen year old. And that's just ten years!

Anywhoo rant done. (Maybe I'm actually getting too old for these books. Now there's a sad thought)

I will admit that this one took me a little bit longer to get into than the others in this series. Ophelia has never been my favorite character, though she has her moments. I never was chanting and hopeful that she'd have her own book or anything. I wasn't even a huge fan of the input she'd had on several recent stories.

That said, this one did end up growing on me a bit and by the end I did enjoy it overall.

I do have a few unanswered questions, but I'm guessing they might come up in later books and be answered there. Hopefully. Those are what keep it from being more of a 4 than a 3. It didn't feel complete enough on it's own as a story. More of a partial.

‘I was Ophelia freaking Lambert. I was the Terror of Amsterdam and the inspiration for the Hall and Oates song “Maneater.” And I was going to stop feeling sorry for myself.’

Finally!!! Fans of the Half-Moon Hollow series have been asking for more about Ophelia and Jamie’s unlikely match-up. And just like she did by accommodating us with Dick and Andrea’s story in Fangs For The Memories, Molly Harper has delivered a novella sharing details about vampiress Ophelia and her boy toy. I mean, boyfriend.
