Olive Kennedy, Fairy World M.D. #2

Spellweaver: Olive Kennedy

Rate this book
Olive's to-do list: Feed the cat. Pay the rent. Save Faythander. Again.
After Olive's last trip through Faythander, she wants nothing more than a nice vacation. But there's never time for relaxation when goblin treachery is afoot. When Geth, a goblin Spellweaver, destroys the Everblossom—a tree containing Faythander's pure magic—the fairy-world utopia begins to die. The bloom of the Everblossom is all that remains of pure magic. Now Olive must travel through Earth and Faythander to find a place where it will flourish.
As a psychiatrist, her skills are top notch. However, her abilities to handle patients with abnormal mental behaviors will be put to the test when she confronts Geth. Nothing has prepared her for what he reveals to her about goblins and elves. As Olive's quest takes her from her home in Houston through the most dangerous places in Faythander, she learns that history is a muddled subject, especially when elves are involved.
Her only comfort comes from Kull, her Viking warrior sidekick—who somehow negates her bad fortune. Yet how long can their relationship last when his past is brought to light? Olive will be tested beyond anything she has endured so far, as the secrets of Faythander's sordid and bloody past are exposed—one that could irrevocably alter the future and destroy the lives of everyone she loves.

Tamara Grantham’s Midas touch has worked its charm again with the second book in the Olive Kennedy: Fairy World MD entitled Spellweaver.

When we first left off with the first installment of this series, Dreamthief, I knew that it was amounting to something special. That inkling has been confirmed tenfold after reading Spellweaver. The unique voice that Grantham breathes into Olive Kennedy is equal parts quirky and relatable. Olive is a character that does not wallow in self-pity or let herself remain mired down by seemingly insurmountable circumstances. She is a girl who doesn’t quite fit in, but instead of letting her status hold her back, she utilizes her differences to accomplish feats that none before or after could achieve. So this story is not simply entertaining, it is inspiring.

The world Grantham has constructed for Olive Kennedy to inhabit is unmatched. It is abundantly clear that Grantham took extreme care in her world building. She has created not one, but two absolutely believable realms that span this series. As if this weren’t a large enough undertaking, she has layered with the Fairy World numerous regions, races, and cultures. Each tier of this imaginative world ushers you deeper within the story and into a journey you won’t soon forget.

Grantham has also penned the most interesting set of secondary characters to keep Olive company. No matter how much time any one character spends with Olive, all are equally created. There is no being out of place, and I found myself constantly eager to see who or what Grantham had planned next for both Olive and her readers. Being able to meet these creatures as Olive did only magnified the enjoyment factor of this work.

They say that the best books leave an impression far beyond the turn of the last page. This sentiment is a gross understatement to describe how Spellweaver has left me. I found both refuge and hope within the pages of Spellweaver, each being much needed. The entertainment that this book reads is most certainly a 5 star rating, but the inspiration it offers is off the charts.

I enjoyed Spellweaver even more than Dreamthief! Seeing Olive make greater strides in her magic and personal life was delightful. Kull continued to make me laugh with his wit and confidence. Grantham does an excellent job of writing an unpredictable and unique story. I especially reveled in the added romance between Kull and Olive throughout their adventures.

Okay, first of all: let the drooling commence over that absolutely gorgeous cover! It is a worthy successor to the cover of Dreamthief.

Summary:

As if Olive Kennedy didn't have enough problems, now she is required to save Faythander. Again. From goblins. Again. So much for the peaceful fairy world of her childhood.

Tracking goblins would have been easier if Olive wasn't surrounded by a bunch of Wult warriors, she imagined. Yet, she stuck with them for one Wult in particular: Kull. Having proven himself a remarkably lucky companion during her Dreamthief escapades, Olive has committed herself to helping track the goblins in order to rescue Kull's sister. Except, his sister is in love with the goblin leader, Geth, who is on a mission to destroy magic in Faythander.

When Geth succeeds in destroying the Everblossom–a tree containing the last vestiges of pure magic in either world–it is Olive's job to restore the magic to the fairy realm, or watch every magical creature die a slow and painful death. A point that is driven home the moment she returns to the dragons and seeks her stepfather's advice and finds the Sky King in mortal peril.

Relying more heavily on her Earth Kingdom magic, Olive must locate the Everblossom's last bloom and find where it belongs before all of Faythander's magic is extinguished. Each step of the way, she fights against Geth's interference, and a few personal obstacles that involve a boyfriend that needs to be slapped with an 'ex' label, and a mother whose mind is clearing by the day now that the spells on her memories are losing their hold.

Perhaps worst of all, however, is the decree that the Wult King has made: that Kull and Olive can never be. For the Wult Prince's marriage must have political significance, and he does not consider Olive worthy. And she can't decide if it is better or worse that Kull is eager to discount threats of his inheritance in order to be with Olive.

Being a savior is a tough gig.

Initial Thoughts:

I love Olive. Kull is hilarious. The plot is never ridiculous or tests my patience. And the writing is superb. This is a series I very much want more of.

Characters:

Olive Kennedy is a desperate woman who doesn't get paid enough to do what she does. After saving Faythander once before from the threat of the return of the Goddess Theht, she was kind of hoping for some down time. That didn't happen. A simple rescue mission turns into another save the world escapade. And does she flinch from that responsibility? Hell no! This woman rolls her shoulders back, gives a sigh that sounds like a muttered 'not this shit again,' and does her job.

She's snarky and realistic. My love for Olive is unnatural and a bit pathetic. But it's true: I am in love with Olive's character as a whole. This is one woman you can count on to do the right thing, no matter the cost. And sometimes the costs are high, but she does what she needs to anyway. I really love this aspect to her.

Kull is still his cocky, arrogant, brash, bold self, and damn is it a treat reading about him. Loyal to the point of stupidity, sometimes, while pushing boundaries he shouldn't at others, Kull is a warrior through and through. Most compelling is his passion when on a mission. He has no qualms about charging into danger because danger is where the fun is at. And his luck often works to counteract Olive's ability to court catastrophe. They're a perfect pair.

Again, other characters could be discussed at length, but when you have these two, there's really no need. This is a 'you'll have to read it to understand … so go read it already!' kind of deal.

Plot & Setting:

Magical fairy realm mixed with a little Texan flare. That's our setting, as Olive moves between the worlds and gives us a very detailed explanation of just what the hell is going on. It's neither overdone to the point you choke on the details, but nor is it a blank canvas that you have to provide all the details for. A perfect balance, in my opinion.

As far as the plot… How do I describe this without spoilers? This is difficult…

Okay, so the plot is packed with a lot of questions, sporadic answers which induce more questions, and a double dosage of 'don't trust anyone.' There's intrigue and life-threatening adventure. Each step makes sense and each plot point drives home the reality of their situation should the magic not be restored. It's fast-paced and addictive. And I loved every minute of it.

Writing Style:

If you're not sick of this word yet, I'm going to make you sick of it, because I LOVED the narration and storytelling ability put into this book. Olive's voice is engaging and serves to cement her character in your mind. The mark of a damn good writer, in my opinion. Again, this book was as fun as its predecessor, without losing any of the seriousness that the situation calls for. At times it was also just plain heartbreaking.

My biggest compliment to this author is her ability to create separate story lines for each novel, while maintaining that single strand of 'underlying cause' that connects the books. To me, this is how every series should be, though I know they are often not. I truly enjoy books that seem as if they are a standalone, when really you're given the opportunity to continue the journey with these characters. Which is why this is easily becoming one of my favorite series to date.

Overall Opinion:

I loved it. Do I really need to say more?

Having read Dreamthief, the first in this series, I expected great things from Spellweaver and I was not disappointed.
Olive Kennedy is still torn between worlds -life on earth as a struggling therapist dealing primarily with people who have been to (and forgotten about) Faythander and her life IN Faythander where she is the stepdaughter of the dragon known as the Sky King - and we are right there with her. The trials, the battles, successes and the failures.
Although a little darker than the first book in the series, Tamara Grantham's writing is up to the task and you find yourself turning over at night wondering what Olive's next move will be and how the evil threatening her home will respond.
I personally cannot wait for the next book in the series to be released. And I have a feeling I'll be neglecting hubby to read this one too!

Alright, here's the deal...I needed tissues. So if you have those random leaky eye moments, when reading make sure to keep some near by. I adored Dreamthief, and Spellweaver did not disappoint. Tamara Grantham delivered action and all the feels from the get go. Of course our favorite Dr.Pepper drinking Adonis was there. Kull still keeps the quirky humor rolling, Olive still analyzes everything. Not long into their journey a travesty occured that not only causes leaky eyes, but makes your heart hurt. Although there is little time to waste our group and a few new faces, continue on the path set before them. A major loss in Faythander could spell doom for both worlds. Traveling back to the Earth world Olive finds out some pretty heavy stuff about her mother. This new revelation could spell trouble in the future. Even though she is back searching for someone and something very important she still has human issues to contend with. Although Olive and Kull are a dream couple with their easy going nature, there is still a Brent issue to deal with. Although she only feels they are together because he can't do better, will she bring herself to choose Kull over Brent? The story hasn't even fully piqued while Olive deals with silly human customs. The action really starts to swing when she decides to take up basketball and swimming. From then on you can't put the book down! I felt like I was emerged in the mystery surrounding the path Olive and her cohorts endure. Can Olive save magic in both worlds? Grab your copy now to find out!

Again, I'm not a big fan of fantasy, but this book is yet another exception by this author.

Olive Kennedy, a psychiatrist who possesses magical abilities continues her quest, this time to relocate a magical bloom that possesses pure magic to a location as yet unknown to her. Traveling by virtue of her magical abilities from Earth to Faythander, she must try to keep the magic flower that will regrow the Everbloom Tree and restore magic to Faythander to avoid the demise of all of the magical beings living there. Sleuthing out the location where the bloom must take root to regrow the tree involves correctly interpreting a prophesy and making a perilous journey along with a host of other beings from Faythander, including Kull, a Wult prince (something like a Nordic warrior). Being in love with him and he with her has already created complications. Will it create more?

Hey, read the book. I'm not going to give you any spoilers!

There were a few technical issues with the book in the form of some editing gone awry (words left in that should have been struck, missing punctuation) that made me snip off a star, but without those issues this would have gotten five stars from me. The story, Book 2 of the series, doesn't drift off the way many series sequels does, but rather continues an epic tale of fantasy and magic.

Another great addition to the series, as we see Olive off on another adventure back to Faythander to save the Fairies this time, so well written we see Olive not only succeed but also have some setbacks that she has to contend with, i think it was a nice pace not to fast and not so slow you think nothing is ever going to happen, this book and the series is definitely worth a read.

I've read out of order (accidentally started with book 3), but with this one, finally feel invested in the story and characters--no doubt because I've filled in the holes. Suffice to say it's too exciting to waste time writing, and I have #4 ready to go.

I fell absolutely in love with book one with the fun and comedy that brought my attention to this author. This book didn't have as much comedy to draw me in but it does have an awesome plot with some surprising twists and turns throughout the story.

This book started right off where book one left off and I love how the author can bring these words on the pages alive and keep us on the edge of our seats the entire ride!!

Wow, what a wild ride this story was!! The author covered a lot in this book. We found out more about Olive Kennedy in this story and quite a shocker about her.....mother.........

There were many original characters along with some new characters. We get to know more about her dad and her love for Kull is stronger than ever in this story. There were moments when I was shocked and in awe at some of the scenes. I really didn't know these shocking events were even coming. You go along reading and BAM you get hit with a shocker and my mouth was left hanging open in horror. It's an amazingly well written story for everybody to enjoy. I highly recommend it.

I really didn't want this book to end and I am curious to see where the author will take us next.

Urban Fantasy. I've been a fan of the genre ever since I read the first Dresden Files book. I know I mention that series quite a bit, but it's because one of my favorites. So when I bring it up in this review for Spellweaver by Tamara Grantham, it's because I've grown to like both series quite a bit. The reason is simple: the characters and the world building in both series are great. I've read the first book, Dreamthief, as well, and I'm hooked now. While I don't think it's completely necessary to read book one to get in the flow of the action of book two, I highly recommend reading it first because it goes into the background of Olive Kennedy, Fairy World MD. The events which take place in book two will make more sense as well. As for Olive herself, she's quite an interesting character, and from her introductory scene in Dreamthief, I knew she'd become someone I'd like quite a bit. I was right, and she is.

She's a psychologist, but not your typical psychologist. For one, she's half-elven. Secondly, she helps those who have entered Faythander, (this is the magical world of elves, pixies, dragons, goblins and Wults, who are like Faythander's version of Vikings) but can't remember their time there due to the way magic works. Because of this, she often gets referrals from Dr. Hill, one of the minor characters in the first novel. It was this part of the world building that I really liked, and served to draw me in to the story. Faythander isn't just another realm parallel to our own, but rather, it is its own world, which I thought was a great take on it. Then again, I've always liked those other-worldly realms which most people don't know about except for a few.

The secondary characters in this book (as well as the first) were very well developed. Kull, the son of the Wult's king, was one of the most interesting. There was a relationship which had started to form between him and Olive, and at the end of book two, I was wondering where it was headed. So, if there's a plan for a third book, I know I want to read it, simply because I'm a fan of Olive Kennedy, and want to read more about her. Besides, how can I not like a character who named her cat Han Solo?

This is a fantastic world to dive into, full of secrets, unexpected twists and edge of the seat tension all the way through.

Olive is looking forward to a little more quiet and normal, now that all has been saved. Instead, a sacred tree holding pure magic is destroyed and Faythander's existence is on the line. Of course, Olive is the only person capable of solving the problem - thanks to her duo-magic. Now, she's forced to chase the evil doer across both worlds.

After reading and enjoying book one, I was looking forward to see what Olive would be up against next. And I was not disappointed. The romance and a very manly hero are still present, but that takes back seat to Olive's new task. This book is fast paced, barely giving Olive time to breathe. Not only are the characters from the first book still on board, but some of those, who didn't have a major role before, gain more depth this time around. It was a delight to learn more about Olive and her family, and learn more about Olive's past as well as a bit more about her powers.

Faythander grows as Olive travels to new areas, and it's fun to travel with her. The author does a lovely job of bringing this magical world to life, giving it beauty and darkness at the same time. The characters are also not straight forward, but have their own sharp corners. Even after getting to know some of them in book one, new shadow sides are revealed in this book, giving the characters a slightly different twist.

The task Olive faces is a little more complex this time around, and it was nice to see that with the layers of exposed secrets, the world building (especially history) also became richer. The ending wraps up most things well, despite a few holes, and definitely hooks with a cliff-hanger or two for the next book.

Summed up, this is a great continuation of the series. The romance is toned down and the action is stepped up. Fans of magic, fairies and a dab of modern reality are sure to enjoy every page.

We join our heroine as she battles through the treacherous badlands of pixie swamps. Tension is high, especially when the arrival of some former allies heralds some disturbing news. The Everblossom is transferring its magic into Uli, its speaker. Something only done in times of real peril. The tree is fearful, and without it all magic in Faythander will become no more. There is no choice but to walk the treacherous path to the tree. But their arrival sees them bear witness to a horrible event, Geth has succeeded in his plan. The tree's magic floods from Yuri to a small flower, but such is not enough to sustain the magic. Geth vows to find the flower, destroying the only hope of restoring the powers to Faythander. But with the loss of magic comes a greater danger. Those born of it will die. Worse still, the memory block and altered memories forced into Olive's mother will begin to weaken. What should happen should she remember her hatred for her daughter, her vow to sacrifice her? Olive is forced to reply on her allies, juggling her life in Faythander and her one on Earth. But not everyone is who they seem.

Spellweaver: Olive Kennedy has a number of unexpected revelations that will take the reader by surprise. Tamara Grantham's style is fitting with the young adult genre, although will easily be enjoyed by the adult market too. Some of the twists will keep you flicking the pages, pushing you onward through the action packed turmoil to discover what happens next. There are things you can't wait to uncover, and questions that must be answered. Tragedy, betrayal, love, lore, and magic, what more could you ask from a fantasy? But be warned, once this tale has its claws in you, you won't want to put it down.

***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.***

In Spellweaver, Olive is back with Kull and they are facing impending doom if they don't save the Everblossom and protect it from the evil goblin Geth. In her quest to find the Everblossom, Olive ends up finding out more about the history between the goblins and the elves. Theirs is a muddled history, not at all like the history that has been propagandized to those who live in Faythander. I found myself slightly sympathizing with the goblins for this reason.

This quest of Olive's had me trying to guess all through the book who was a traitor and who was secretly helping the goblins. And while I rejoiced in knowing who it was, the events that rapidly happened afterward had me on the edge of my seat because I didn't expect that casualty to occur. Much less did I expect what happened to Olive and Kull because of it. I am glad that Olive seems to get closer to her biological father, and she learns more of her parents' history.

The only reason this isn't getting 5 Platypires is because while it was an exciting adventure, I didn't feel it match up to the excitement and thrill of Dreamthief.

4/5 Platypires!

What an adventure! Olive goes from one crisis to another, and is very necessary in keeping peace and balance in Faythander, the girl really needs to give herself more credit. In Spellweaver, Geth is trying to kill magic and destroy the Everblossom tree to get vengeance on the Elves for their torturous past to goblin kind. There is a fantastic storyline here, but what I must love on for a minute is the characters. The characters in this series are so fantastic. Their banter and the way they are with each other is just so fun and natural, and it makes you love this world and the things they are going through, regardless of the story, and that the story is so fantastic as well is just a total bonus.
There really is just so much here tho, action and adventure, love and tenderness, heartbreak and sadness. Some of these feelings happening simultaneously. From Faythander, to Earth, to pirate ships and getting ship wrecked on a secret isle with wild dragons! But with every victory there is a price, and the price here is very high! As you grow to love these characters and feel they are your friends, you tend to feel their pain as well, and the hurt here is real. Kudos to the author for creating such a wonderful world to escape to.

For two weeks, Olive had been tracking Kull’s sister, along with two Wult scouts. Listening to their bickering, she couldn’t wait to return to Earth. A pixie warrior flew toward them with someone in his arms – Uli, speaker for the magical Everblossom Tree. She said the tree was in danger and they had to go there now. The tree, in great danger, was transferring its magic to Uli and eventually this would kill her. And if the tree died, all magical life in the land would die as well. Their path was now set before them.

When you begin to read this book, you know instantly you are in a magical world, transported there by this talented author. Pixies, dragons, Wults, elves, goblins, and all sorts of mythical creatures exist and it feels real! The characters are developed and believable, despite their supernatural origins. The book is action-packed with a great storyline. I definitely recommend this book. It’s engaging and holds your interest from the start. The intrigue, twists and turns keep you moving eagerly through the pages. Awesome read. I was given a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it. My comments reflect my honest opinion.

Title: Spellweaver
Author: Tamara Grantham
Series: Fairy World MD #2
Genre: fantasy
Rating: ***

Having read the first of this series, I was excited to dive into this one. The world Grantham has created is pretty great, not like any other fantasy series I've ever read, and I'm very much enjoying Olive's story and character development. There were instances of emotion and some shocking parts, with the ending in particular being unexpected and the best part.

However, this time round I found it a little slower, with some parts being too conveniently solved and some lore added which seemed to serve no purpose other than an easy get out or extra detail which seems to be significant but really isn't. Similarly, there really needed to be more romance between Olive and Kull, as although they had chemistry in the first book, there was very little in this one, and very few scenes with any romantic interaction at all.

I will be finishing the series as it's been set up well and is intriguing me, and despite its downsides this was still a very enjoyable read.

Having finished Dreamthief (the first book of the series) in January, I was eager to get to the second. And of course, I wasn't disappointed. Spellweaver opens up right in the thick of the action. Not in an overpowering way, but in a way that draws you in, knowing you've just opened up an adventure that is going to entertain and keep you on your toes.

I was not prepared for some of the twists and turns, and while the ending left me crushed, it was a good crushed if that makes any sense. Good, because now I'm biting my nails, waiting for book #3. All I can hope is that somehow they overcome. If they don't, then I don't know what I'm going to do. *wink wink* And that's all I'm saying.

The world and cast of characters that are painted in this series are amazing. They all are carefully carved into their own story arches and remain true throughout. Same can be said about the wonderful writing.

My full review of this title can be found on my book blog, So Few Books, at: https://sofewbooks.blogspot.com/2017/....

I hated this book with the white-hot passion of a thousand burning suns!!... I (obviously) got very drawn into this story, much as I did in the first novel of the series. However, I wasn’t as impressed with this one. Everything that occurred just seemed like part of one endless pilgrimage for an intended purpose that was to no avail in the end. Overall, there was way too much death and sadness in this tome for me.... There was a lot learned about many secrets kept by various individuals, groups and species, all of which was extremely interesting, and possibly built more of the background for later storylines. But the relationship between Kull and Olive was disappointing all along in this volume....

Another fabulous tale

Once I really started reading, I didn't want to stop. Such a wonderful, well written story. I love how the story plays in your mind like a movie as you read. Again, I'm sad this book has ended as I always am sad once I finish a great book. Anyone who loves fantasy will love this book... even if you don't love fantasy, if you just love good stories, this is the series for you. I love the characters, the detailed description of faythander and all its creatures. The suspense is strong and keeps you wanting more and more. I give this story five stars because I couldn't stop thinking of it every time I put it down!
