Bondmates #2

Jaz's Warriors

Rate this book
Growing up in Harlem as the daughter of a dentist, Jaz Brooks never imagined that there would be a day where she’d have two smoking hot alien husbands, Mavet and Xentix. Or that she would be living on a Kadothian spaceship stationed on one of Saturn’s moons as an Earth Ambassador. And she certainly never imagined that her bondmates would be encouraging her to take a third husband, but that’s exactly what’s happening.

Tandar Glycin has been fighting the Hive in the distant Bel’Tan galaxy for so long now he’d given up hope of ever finding his Matriarch. When word reaches him that his blood brother, Mavet, has bonded an Earth female Tandar is both elated and worried. Vicious rumors abound in the Bel’Tan galaxy about how horrible Earth women are and he worries that Mavet has taken a monster as his wife. When he first meets Jaz he quickly realizes that not all of the stories are true, and that the Lord of Life has blessed him with a kind, beautiful, and feisty alyah who is going to make him work to win her heart.

Warning- This story is set in the Bel'Tan galaxy where polyamorous relationships are the norm and love in all of its forms is accepted including M/M, M/M/F, M/M/M/F sexual situations.

Ann Mayburn

Ann is Queen of the Castle to her wonderful husband and three sons in the mountains of West Virginia. In her past lives she's been an Import Broker, a Communications Specialist, a US Navy Civilian Contractor, a Bartender/Waitress, and an actor at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. She also spent a summer touring with the Grateful Dead(though she will deny to her children that it ever happened).

From a young age she's been fascinated by myths and fairytales, and the romance that often was the center of the story. As Ann grew older and her hormones kicked in, she discovered trashy romance novels. Great at first, but she soon grew tired of the endless stories with a big wonderful emotional buildup to really short and crappy sex. Never a big fan of purple prose, throbbing spears of fleshy pleasure and wet honey pots make her giggle, she sought out books that gave the sex scenes in the story just as much detail and plot as everything else-without using cringe worthy euphemisms. This led her to the wonderful world of Erotic Romance, and she's never looked back.

Now Ann spends her days trying to tune out cartoons playing in the background to get into her 'sexy space' and has learned to type one handed while soothing a cranky baby.

It seems like forever since I read Casey's Warriors, which was the start of a new series by Ann Mayburn about aliens needing women after their women went a little crazy. See, the men live long lives and usually pick a bondmate male. They love each other as they look for their female mate. With the majority of natural born female aliens having turned in to psychos, they need to "harvest" women from other planets. When they find a female mate that they can bond with, they usually bond with all the males in the group making a big happy family.

We jump right into Jaz's story when the Kadothian enter the earth's atmosphere and no one knows what is going on and then quickly jump to months later when Jaz has already bonded with two males, Mavet and Xentix, whom are now her husbands. Mavet is bonded Tandar, who has been off battling the Hive (the psychos). Tandar has come to the the wife of his bondmate and hope that they are compatible as he only wants to be loved.

Jaz is counselor to the earth women as an ambassador. She helps the women acclimate to a new culture, but as well dealing with two or more husbands. Having two husbands of her own is great, but now she is nervous about meeting a possible candidate for a thirds husband.

There is a side story with Jaz getting in trouble with an official and going before what I would assume would be a court system. The story moves extremely fast and my biggest complaint is that we totally missed out on how Jaz met Mavet and Xentix. The only other thing that gets to me is the free love kind of feel. Not that I am against it, but everything is very open, very different and I would probably be one of the problem females if we were really invaded. I didn't let that curtail my enjoyment of the story. I am so looking forward to the next full length novel in this series as I don't feel short stories do it for me.

I liked this book much more than the first one in the series. The world is becoming more detailed and the characters more complex as well.

I thought that is was an excellent idea to start this book with the romance of the third husband because this grounds us fully in this world without the irritation of the shock of getting use to a new culture.

Very fun, interesting, Alien Erotic Romance!

I was given this book for my honest review. So there you have it.

~ 3 Jaz’s Warriors Stars ~

Jaz’s Warriors is a novella #1.5 in the Bondmates series by Ann Mayburn.

This was a very short novella ending at around 67-70%. The rest of the book is filler with the first chapter of Casey's Warriors and author/book promotions.

We meet Jaz in Casey’s Warriors. I liked her the moment she was introduced. She’s got spunk and is very friendly to all the new arrivals. She already has two husbands, so she understands the culture differences and shock of having more then one man. She also plays a major role in helping the earth women who are brought aboard the Kadothian Reaping Ship adjust to the new lifestyle.

As for the story it’s short, quick, and very steamy. We get a little tension between a few people, the rumors going around are meant to sabotage the bonding of earth women to the alien men, and a small conflict arises that Jaz’s administrative duties must resolve. All of this is happening while she is intruded to and trying to bond with Tandar whom Mavet one of her husbands is blood brother too. He wants her to choose Tandar as a third husband. We also see a few previous characters from the first book pop in and a new character is introduced that will be featured in Page’s Warriors. The sex scenes are very hot, very steamy, and well written.

I enjoyed Jaz’s Warriors. I would have liked it to be a full book. I felt it could have been made longer, but with novella’s we just get a taste of the world and characters. It was a nice addition to the series. I am curious to read Page’s Warriors.

This is the second book in a series which I haven't read, but that in no way diminished my enjoyment of this short but spicy Science Fiction read.

The story starts with the invasion of Earth, and then jumps forward to when Jaz is already a Matriarch, mated to two and meeting a potential third. Things are done very differently in this world, and some human females are having trouble adapting. Jaz's counselling experience is able to help her and others to cope with a way of living and loving.

Because I haven't read the first book, I'm not sure if Jaz is mentioned in that, or how she met husbands one and two. This isn't a negative, it's just that this is one fast-paced story so I would like to know more about these characters, just to understand all aspects of the story.

If you are after a short and steamy sci-fi romance with multi partners, then I can definitely recommend this one.

* I received this book from Barclay Publicity in return for a fair and honest review. *

Good but too short

Really enjoyed the book but it ended at 71%!!!!!! I really wanted more story. There was a big gap between what I assume was the aliens coming to Earth and Jaz and her husbands. How did they meet? There was alot of story not there but what was there was interesting.

Jaz’s Warriors is my first introduction to Ms. Mayburn’s writing. I’m not much into Sci-Fi/Fantasy but you give me a good blurb and toss in some menage action, and I will read it! When I saw this book would include M/M, M/M/F, M/M/M/F sexual situations I WAS LIKE YAAAASSSSS! Deep otherworldly sexin’? YASSSSSSSS! If you’re a fan of alien men taking on human brides for bonding, this story will be right up your alley!

Let me start by saying I’m not fond of books that begin with a glossary of terms. If one is present, authors I beg of you, please put it at the end of the book. Allow the reader to become immersed in your world. If I find myself confused, I will look to the glossary when my reading journey has ended. This is simply a personal preference. I suppose I like the element of surprise and not having everything laid out for me.

The book begins with a prologue called “The Event” where a weird rainbow of colors illuminates the sky. Jasmin “Jaz” Brooks, who is a therapist, is in the middle of a counseling session with a couple when the weirdness begins. There’s mass hysteria and panic in the streets, and people decide to seek shelter in her building. The prologue IMO was rushed. I felt that some aspects could have been fleshed out a bit more. We don’t know much about what happened during “The Event.” The reader is told what it may have been in the first chapter, but it’s not detailed at all. What we do get in the prologue is a sneak peek of Jaz’s future while she’s dreaming. This… this is where problems first started to arise for me.

The description of one of her potential mates:

“The first man had creamy golden skin, with slanted eyes and long dark hair that gave him a slightly Asian look.”

What? Slanted eyes? REALLY? This is a fail. So much fail. Could there have been a better way to describe the physical characteristics of this character? Absolutely. Especially, when the second potential mate is described as such:

“The second also had long black hair, but his skin was pale and his eyes a lovely light blue.”

Sigh. I can’t agree with the wording choices here. Ms. Mayburn has a publisher. I find it surprising that the editor didn’t pick up on the coded language.

Anyway back to the story. Fast forward to present day and Jaz is on an alien ship with two of her husbands. Her job on earth as a therapist has assisted her in her new role as an Ambassador. Polyamory is big with Kadothian men. One of Jaz’s husbands is interested in her taking on another to join their family and Tandar is introduced. Much of the story centers around Tandar’s attempts to court Jaz and her dealing with her feelings about her new life and her new role. Of course, there is conflict, but it’s minimal.

I will say overall; I enjoyed the story; however, I didn’t find the harping on the “otherness” appealing.

“Rich brown skin and exotic features…”

Ugh.

I tried to look past it because to some degree it is Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Jasmin is a human female but good grief it was overkill. I was expecting more freakiness with the sex scenes, but they were okay. Some readers will enjoy the fact that Jaz is plus-size, and her husbands find her delectable. Kudos to Ms. Mayburn for the depiction of a curvy heroine.

Lastly, I didn’t conclude this story feeling satisfied. My Kindle stopped around the 70% mark. The remainder of the book is the first few chapters of the next story in the series. Personally, I’m not a fan of this marketing tactic. Give me 100% story and then sell the heck out of your other books.

Overall, I give this story three stars. It had potential, and some parts were great, but other aspects rubbed me the wrong way.

Aliens amping up the heat...

Jazmine Brooks, Earth Ambassador to the Kadothians never expected her Masters in Couple’s Therapy to be used in quite the way it was. Since she married her two Kadothian husbands she has spent her time helping other Earth women acclimate to another culture and navigate the complexities of a polyamorous marriage, something she doesn’t have the most experience with herself. Nothing in her background as a preacher’s daughter from Harlem prepared her for the very openly sexual nature of the Kadothian culture.

On the other hand, her experience as an African-American woman has given her a double dose of exposure when it comes to prejudice, something the other women from Earth may not have as much experience with when they come up against species prejudice in their new lives. Her very background and experience make her perfect in her position as Ambassador. Something that has drawn the enmity of one of the Kadothian elders. The fact that the guy is an absolute jerk and seems to have married a very vain and vapid woman with a major self-indulged personality pushes Jaz just a tad too far one time too many and puts her in the crosshairs of scrutiny. Not something she needs on the day she is to meet her potential third husband.

The Kadothian culture is built around blood brother relations where the brothers are sexually involved and typically marry one woman who becomes the matriarch of their family. The matriarch is the central binding factor and key to saving the men from sinking into a beastial state of craziness resulting from the psychic natures. Millenium ago, the women of the Kadothian species were corrupted and became the embodiment of evil. To combat the issue, the men’s reproductive capabilities were altered so that they can only produce male children. Now, they can only mate with women of other species. Earth women are their potential salvation. Jaz’s mates, Mavet and Xentix are totally devoted to Jaz. They are also very protective and at times withhold crucial information in their attempt to coddle and protect. Little do they know how much potential damage flying blind can cause. Xentix also has another blood brother and at the beginning of Jaz’s Warriors the three are awaiting his arrival on the space station. Where Xentix and Mavet are both healers, Tandar is all warrior. While Xentix and Mavet play their part in this story (and may I say their parts are very hot) it is more a tale of how Tandar and Jaz meet and bond while dealing with the complexities of Kadothian culture and prejudice.

As the physical heat increases between Tandar and Jaz, her mates bring every ounce of their considerable psychic heat into play. Let’s just say things become rather hot and steamy between the two, let alone the four when their relationship is cemented. Jaz’s Warriors is a fairly quick read that I really enjoyed. If you are looking for a bit of steamy sci-fi romance then Jaz’s Warriors definitely qualifies.

Watch out for the heat…

Wow, did this novella simmer and sizzle! What it lacked in pages was made up in intriguing characters, angsty drama and all the steamy heat you could ever want. This a story about love knowing no boundaries or limits…

Jaz found herself jumping from the familiar to a life usually found in fantasy or fairy tales. She had two husbands with a third suitor waiting in the wings. Her warriors were totally in love with her and really, how bad can that be?? She was treasured for her empathy and warmth, and admired for her straightforward, strong approach to her new life. And those warriors? Yeah, men in uniform could have been molded by these guys with their strength only matched by their softness when it came to their wife…

This story mysteriously moved from Earth to a galaxy full of possibilities, never really explaining how that happened. I have so many questions! About how Jaz found her first two husbands (oh yes!) and her new career as an ambassador. Of course, there are more stories to come – and apparently I missed one as well – so hopefully there will be a lot of answers along with the heat that is sure to come...

*I happily reviewed this story

Not what I expected

I purchased this book because it popped up in a search for BW paranormal romance. I didn’t realize it was a novella. When I started reading it made this huge jump from The Event to what seems to be months later with the female lead already bonded to her first two mates. Knowing it is book 2 in a series, I thought her story must have been told in the first book, so I stopped reading and purchased the first book. Unfortunately Jaz’s story isn’t told fully. And while I did enjoy the first book, and the writer’s story-telling, I am disappointed with the misleading advertising. Jaz has a lot to add to this “world” but unfortunately she was relegated to a sidebar and not fleshed out.

Loved this little look into a character I instantly wanted to know more about from Casey's Warriors. Can't imagine all the changes that come from realizing you're destined for more and having it tested from those you're trying to save. Then comes another love and you realize as your heart grows so does her strength.

Jaz's story is a novella, which I found to be a good length. It's a quick steamy read. Jaz and her husbands are mentioned in the first book so it was fun to get a quick story about them. This is a good addition to the series

It was a nice story but it has a lot of gaps. The story begins with the event and we get to know her family and that is nice to know but there is nothing about how she met her husbands... I would have liked a flashback about that... so, it's not complete.

This book can be read as a standalone, but for the most enjoyment of the series it should be read in order.

Growing up in Harlem, Jaz Brooks never imagined that there would be a day where she'd have two smoking hot alien husbands, Mavet and Xentix, who worshiped her. Or that she would be living on a Kadothian spaceship stationed on one of Saturn's moons as an Earth Ambassador. And she certainly never imagined her bondmates would be encouraging her to take a third husband, but that's exactly what's happening.

Tandar Glycin has been fighting the Hive in the distant Bel'Tan galaxy for so long now he'd given up hope of ever finding his Matriarch. When word reaches him that his blood brother, Mavet, has bonded an Earth female Tandar is both elated and worried. Vicious rumors abound in the Bel'Tan galaxy about how horrible Earth women are and he worries that Mavet has taken a monster as his wife. When he first meets Jaz he quickly realizes that not all of the stories are true, and that the Lord of Life has blessed him with a kind, beautiful, and feisty alyah who is going to make him work to win her heart.

Warning- This story is set in the Bel'Tan galaxy where polyamorous relationships are the norm and love in all of its forms is accepted including M/M, M/M/F, M/M/M/F sexual situations hot enough to melt your panties.

The faint of the heart beware! My oh my, can I freely admit that this one series sets my heart racing and my mind going to other ideas that might not be entirely proper and innocent. As the second instalment in the Bondmates series, Jaz's Warriors steps it up a notch by placing our heroine, Jaz Brooks, as an ambassador for Earth who grew up in Harlem. Very quickly, readers are treated to hot as sin scenes with her soon to be mates, aliens Mavet and Xentis, who all create a bond between one another. As time passes and they get closer, Jaz is encouraged to take on Tandar Glycen, Mavet's blood brother, as a third husband. I've mentioned it at the beinning - this is not for the faint of heart: with her men surrounding her, Jaz is living a polyamourous lifestyle which can be difficult for those who aren't comfortable with the aspect to enjoy, but the chemistry between each of the characters, whether they are male-male or male female, is scorching! The novel is a mixture of what I would best describe as a science fiction-romance genre with a space traveling theme, and yet I still found aspects that were realistic, that can appeal to many readers. Ann Mayburn has always been one of my top followed authors since I picked up her Submissive's Wish and Wicked Nanny's Club series, and as the Bondmates series continues, I can honestly say that it only gets better, hotter and more entertaining as it goes.

PLOT: 5/5
CHEMISTRY: 5/5
PACING: 5/5
ENDING: 5/5
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: 5/5

Jaz's Warriors is my first introduction to Ms. Mayburn's writing. I'm not much into Sci-Fi/Fantasy but you give me a good blurb and toss in some menage action, and I will read it! Jaz’s Warriors, the second book in the Bondmates series, gave great insight into a character that was introduced in the first book: Casey’s Warriors. The book takes place after Casey’s Warriors but explains more of the Kadothian Matriarchal society. And due to the unstable wormhole that brought the Kadothians to Earth, their courting, and courting protocols had to be adjusted for the earthlings. Matriarchs are important and necessary to the Kadothian race because they protect the warriors from the threat of the Hive. The Hive are women with no emotions or empathy who only gain pleasure through torturing and killing others.

Jazmine Brooks is one of the first earthlings that bonded with a Kadothian male and also bonded/married Tandar, a second man. Polyamorous relationships are the normal for Kadothians and something greatly desired by Kadothian males. Earthlings also have to make the tough decision to leave their friends, family, and their planet to be with their soulmate(s) and get past the morals and society norms that are taught on Earth. Jaz is an ambassador on the Kadothian reaping ship, where she helps with the cultural differences between the Kadothians and their earth brides. Although an ambassador, Jaz must confront her own issues regarding the way she was raised on Earth. One of them being that love in all forms is acceptable. Once bonded, they “feel” each other body, mind, and soul! The bonding also seems to awaken various psychic abilities within the Earth females. Earth brides cause many rumors to run rampant along with anti-Earth movements made in fear. While being courted by one of her bondmate’s blood brothers, Jaz must also face another trial while keeping her family together.

I recommend reading these books in order. Casey’s Warriors describes ‘The Event’ that brought the Kadothian reaping ship near Jupiter and Saturn. Jaz’s Warriors is a fast read that was impossible for me to put down. The characters are far from perfect. The imperfections make it for a fun read. Between the cultural differences, the new Kadothian protocols that must be learned, and the earthlings’ slang, Ann brings her world to life! I felt like I was on the reaping ship myself, I worried along with Jaz and her bondmates when Jaz had to face the high council, and I wanted to have a talk with Tandar myself for jumping to conclusions. This author has the most amazing ability to pull you into the world she creates with ease. She did not disappoint me in the slightest bit with Jaz’s Warriors, and I cannot wait for the next in the series about Paige. Jaz’s Warriors, actually the Bondmates series as a whole, is something I will read again and again.
