یه چیز این کتاب اذیتم کرد این بود که همش احساس میکردم نویسنده داره دروغ میگه.
خب چرا این احساسو داشتم؟
نویسنده تو سومالی بدنیا میاد و اونجا بزرگ میشه و خونوادش مسلمان هستن اونم از اون مذهبی شدیدا بعد چند سال نویسنده برمیگرده سومالی یه پسر داره ولی خارج از ازدواج. بعد همش به خونوادش میگه بیایید عکس بگیریم واسه پسرم(پسرشو نیاورده سومالی) و یا اینکه همش میگه مامانم میگه فلان واسه پسرت و اینا. خب اینجا به تعارض میرسیم!!! چطور امکان داره یه خانوتده مذهبی چنین چیزی رو قبول کرده باشن؟ اگه کتابو خونده باشید متوجه میشید که خونوادش از اونا نیستن از این چیزا چشم پوشی کنن!!! بعد مورد بعدی اینکه ایشئن مد ل هستن حتی عکس روی کتاب که فقط ما صورتشو میبینیم بالا تنش کاملا عریانه خب بازم خونوادش هیچ دری اکشنی نشون ندادن.
کلا همش سعی داشت نشون بده که چقر خونوادش نایسن و مردم سومالی چه خوبن.در اینجا بگم من نمیگ این چیزا ایراد داره یا چیزی ولی میگم باعث چه تعارضی شده!!
بعد این کتاب رفتم تو یوتیوب سرچ کردم در مورد سومالی فقط ویدیوهای چشم آبیا رو دیدم که رفتن سومالی خب من حالا نمیدونم ان واقعیته که اونجا خوبه یاپروپاگاندااست مثل همون قضیه فمیلی تریپ که تو ایران اجرا شد!
ولی یه چیز فهمیدمک دختراشون خیلی قشنگم*.*
مخصوصا دماغ هاشون، مثل ما ایرانیا موقع خلقتشون دکه کیپس لاک رو نزده بودن :|
در کل تجربه ثابت کرده بیوگرافی و چه میدونم از این چیزا درومحضه!!!

This is a follow-up ... of sorts ... to Waris' first book Desert Flower. In this book, she goes back to Somalia, after more than 20 years away, to visit relatives and friends ... especially her dear mother. It was nice to be able to peek inside her Somalian family's life, and see how she responds to them after being away for so long, and vice versa. A story of going home.

Αρκετά καλό. Μας παρουσίασε την Σομαλία, την ζωή, τα ήθη και τα έθιμα της χώρας και φυσικά τα πάρα πολλά προβλήματα. Ήταν ευχάριστο, ξεκούραστο και μικρό. Νιώθω όμως ότι πολλές φορές η Γούορις φάσκει και αντιφάσκει όσον αφορά τις σκέψεις τις και τα αισθήματα της. Νιώθω ότι παλεύει με το παρελθόν και το παρόν της, την Σομαλική της ταυτότητα και την "Δυτική" ποιο μοντέρνα γυναίκα μέσα της.

I read this autobiography many years ago so my memory is a bit fuzzy about the details. But what I'm sure of is that Waris Dirie is a brave, resourceful and inspiring woman who risked all to make a better life for herself despite the challenges she faced. But most importantly, she gave back to the world by fighting for the human rights of others and opposing female genital mutilation (FGM). I look forward to rereading this book soon.

Okay so I bought this book while thrifting and thought to myself, “this book seems interesting, why not buy it?” So I did, I bought it after doing my research on the book synopsis and all (completely missed out on the fact that it was the second book written by Waris Dirie, good research there Arsh). Anyway, I started reading it on the bus, and since then I was hooked on this book.
Loved reading it, and it simply didn’t matter that I hadn’t read the first book, and once I got into the book I just simply embraced it and kept reading it on my way to school/home.
For anyone who wants to know about this book, it’s a memoir (autobiography) shedding light on the life the author had while living in New York City, after fleeing from Somalia, from her family (father) who (almost) forced her into marrying an old man. The book follows her life, how she managed to establish a career (becomes a famous model) and have a family (she met another African man, whom she fell in love with and had a child with but he was abusive too) so therefore she left him. Waris Dirie was like any other girl during her time, genitally mutilated (könsstympad in Swedish) and is now an UN ambassador fighting for female rights and is also the face of the fight against female genital mutation. It is really inspiring to read her book and seeing how she longs to once again go back to Somalia and show her family, especially her father, the woman she’s now grown into, in order to show them that perhaps a woman can be independent and doesn’t in-fact need to marry in order to live a healthy and successful life.
Also in the book she mentions her mother a lot, as well as every chapter is introduced by a verse from some Somalian song or a verse (ayat) from the holy Qur’an. As a muslim she talks about her beautiful religion, and criticises her culture for how they misrepresent their religion since the majority of the Somalian population (the girls at that time and many men as well) were illiterate. I love how she talks about her family and also tries to both criticise alongside with giving an explanation to their certain behaviour and so on.
The reason why I loved reading her book was partially because of the way she writes, but also because of her way of seeing the positive things even when life has nothing to offer. Seeing how she always stays grateful and keeps fighting, really is indeed inspiring for me as a young woman. Her way of describing how we (people in the western countries) need to fill some kind of void through the consumption of materialistic things, meanwhile her family, like any other nomad family in Somalia, only own the things they can carry in order to move around easily. The way she’s honest about the flaws of her government, culture and the sexism that characterises her country and family’s way of thinking, is phenomenal. It’s beautiful to see how she describes the love she has for her family despite their imperfections, like any other human being on this planet. This book made me understand, or more accurately ’accept’ how people still can love and embrace a culture, although it may have some flaws and a mindset that needs to be changed. Simply loved it.

Wieder ein sehr ergreifendes Buch wie schon der Vorgänger Wüstenblume.
Waris fährt nach über 20 Jahren endlich in ihre Heimat Somalia zurück und beschreibt wie sie die Zeit mit ihrer Familie erlebt.
Gerade durch die Sichtweise von Waris gewinnt das Buch unglaublich an Tiefe. Waris kennt die Kultur und versteht die Bräuche und Sitten der Somali und kann sich dadurch gut in ihre Mitmenschen hineinversetzen. Durch ihre Zeit im Westen wirft sie auf viele Verhaltensweisen, gerade im Bezug auf die Benachteiligung der Frau, einen eher kritischen Blick.
Trotz des ernsten Themas hat das Buch aber auch einige humorvolle Stellen, gerade wenn es um typisches Verhalten in der westlichen Welt geht. Waris kennt die Vorteile beider Kulturen und zeigt auch auf, was wir von den Somali lernen könnten.
Einige Anekdoten kannte ich zwar schon aus Wüstenblume, aber das war ein so kleiner Prozentsatz, dass ich es als nicht weiter störrend empfunden habe.

A couple of days ago I finished reading my twenty first book this year in English. I've been reading a book every day, and my goal for this year is also to accomplish to read forty eight books in English. I've been keeping it for three years.
My twenty first book was as great as my twentieth book. It was sequent to the book. I learned and thought a lot of things about Africa, Muslim, male dominated society and female circumcision. Before reading these books, I've never heard the word before. I've heard about male circumcision from my friend from Israel, but I didn't know that there is a female version of it.
The author was born in one of the most poorest countries and didn't get any chance for getting education at school. When she was thirteen, she escaped from her family and got a chance to become a super model in London. She educated by herself and become a UN ambassador and a feminist to be against the female circumcision.
I've never known such the strong and brave woman before and am so admired by her. In Japan we have a saying that our chance God has only front hair, and his back head is bold. If we want to get a chance, we have to grab his front hair. That means while hesitating, we lose our chances. The book taught me that whatever I think it's a chance for me, I have to grab it immediately to make my dreams come true. I think it's very true.

دختری بنام واریس دیری از صحرای سوزان سومالی فرار می کند و در نیویورک مدل می شود و در همه دنیا مشهور می شود و پس از آن تصمیم می گیرد به سومالی برگردد تا پدر ومادرش را ببیند و به مردم سومالی کمک کند.
او که خودش قربانی ختنه دختران است، به عنوان سفیر سازمان ملل در مبارزه با ناقص کردن دختران این سفر را شروع می کند اما به نتیجه زیادی نمی رسد.
تناقض بین فرهنگ بومی و فرهنگ جاری در غرب به خوبی در این کتاب به تصویر کشیده شده است.خودش هم بین این دوفرهنگ مانده است.

Dies ist im Grunde eine Fortsetzung von Wüstenblume und erzählt von Waris' Reise nach Somalia. Das Buch lässt sich sehr schnell lesen, aber wirkte auch ein wenig wahllos. Es gab keinen wirklichen roten Faden oder eine klare Botschaft. Das braucht es zwar nicht immer, aber in diesem Fall hätte es dem Buch meiner Meinung nach gut getan.

Αυγή στην Έρημο - Γουόρις Ντίρι
Πρώτ' απ' όλα, αυτό που κρίνεται εδώ δεν είναι μυθιστόρημα, αλλά περισσότερο μια καταγραφή των ημερών της ακτιβίστριας-μοντέλου Γουόρις Ντίρι που υπέστη κλειτοριδεκτομή μετά την πρώτη έκρηξη αντιδράσεων, η επιστροφή της στην Σομαλία και η προσπάθεια επαφής της με την οικογένειά της. Επομένως, αφήνουμε στην άκρη τα λογοτεχνικά κριτήρια (που έτσι κι αλλιώς θα έδιναν τα εύσημα για μια ρεαλιστική και ταυτόχρονα αισθαντική απόδοση των εντυπώσεων από τη γενέθλια χώρα) και πάμε στο θέμα. Το οποίο είναι τραγικό, δεδομένου ότι πουθενά στο βιβλίο δεν θα δεις την Ντίρι να κατηγορεί τους γονείς της για την απόφασή τους να την ακρωτηριάσουν. Αναφέρει παντού την οδυνηρά επικίνδυνη άγνοιά τους συνυφασμένη με την πεποίθηση ότι έπραξαν αυτό που θεωρούσαν καλύτερο για το παιδί τους. Και παρότι στο ταξίδι φαίνεται το απίστευτα πρωτόγονο περιβάλλον της Σομαλίας και ο κατάφωρος μισογυνισμός των αντρών, η συγγραφέας μέχρι την τελευταία σελίδα υμνεί την ομορφιά της χώρας της και την αγάπη της προς τη μητέρα της. Διαβάζεται απνευστί και δείχνει πόσο μονόπλευρη ιδέα έχουμε για τις φτωχές αφρικανικές χώρες (ιθαγενείς που χορεύουν με κόκαλο στη μύτη, γύρω από μια φωτιά...) και πόσο βάθος έχουν στην πραγματικότητα οι κοινωνίες αυτές, όσο δηλαδή έχουν και οι δικές μας.
Πρώτ' απ' όλα, αυτό που κρίνεται εδώ δεν είναι μυθιστόρημα, αλλά περισσότερο μια καταγραφή των ημερών της ακτιβίστριας-μοντέλου Γουόρις Ντίρι που υπέστη κλειτοριδεκτομή μετά την πρώτη έκρηξη αντιδράσεων, η επιστροφή της στην Σομαλία και η προσπάθεια επαφής της με την οικογένειά της. Επομένως, αφήνουμε στην άκρη τα λογοτεχνικά κριτήρια (που έτσι κι αλλιώς θα έδιναν τα εύσημα για μια ρεαλιστική και ταυτόχρονα αισθαντική απόδοση των εντυπώσεων από τη γενέθλια χώρα) και πάμε στο θέμα. Το οποίο είναι τραγικό, δεδομένου ότι πουθενά στο βιβλίο δεν θα δεις την Ντίρι να κατηγορεί τους γονείς της για την απόφασή τους να την ακρωτηριάσουν. Αναφέρει παντού την οδυνηρά επικίνδυνη άγνοιά τους συνυφασμένη με την πεποίθηση ότι έπραξαν αυτό που θεωρούσαν καλύτερο για το παιδί τους. Και παρότι στο ταξίδι φαίνεται το απίστευτα πρωτόγονο περιβάλλον της Σομαλίας και ο κατάφωρος μισογυνισμός των αντρών, η συγγραφέας μέχρι την τελευταία σελίδα υμνεί την ομορφιά της χώρας της και την αγάπη της προς τη μητέρα της. Desert Dawn is the sequel to the very popular & appreciated book "Desert Flower". While the first one was excellent from almost all aspects be it content, writing style, readability, somehow the second one fails in almost everything.
The first one had an agenda, a message which was put across very strongly. The issue of female genital mutiliation was shocking which was presented with utmost care and sensitivity.
This one is about Waris journey back to her roots in Somalia. But it just come across her struggles in her journey and how she despite missing her life in Somalia still feels connected and strongly about it.
The writing style is rudimentary and misses the assertiveness.
Overall, I didnt find the book inspiring.

كتاب رو خيلي دوست داشتم
بابت ضرب المثل ها و حتي آياتي كه اينداي هر فصل داشت
ولي از اون مهم تر و دلنشين تر برام يه ايجاد تعادل و واقع بيني بين سنت و مدرنيته(؟) بود كه كتاب داشت.
واريس ديري علني و جدي مخالفت خودش رو با بعضي از آداي و رسوم سومالي نشون داده ، توي كتاب از محروميت و مشكلات سياسي و فرهنگي كشورش به خوبي صحبت كرده اما همه اينا باعث نشده كه خوبي ها و مهربوني و نكات كثبت رو ناديده بگيره
اين براي من خيلي دلنشينه كه اين فرد نسبت به هر لايف استايلي سعي كرده منصفانه نظر بده و قضاوت كنه
چيزي كه به نظرم توي جامعه خودمون كمبودش به شدت حس ميشه

The story itself was good, easy to read, and honest. In terms of the Author, considering she wrote this book about herself you would think that you finish thinking that this woman was beautiful and lovely and just a really good person ultimately. But to be honest I felt that she DIDN'T paint herself in a good light and this made the book all the more charming for me, and real.
Waris talks about some VERY difficult subjects with honesty but succinctly so that you don't feel bad for reading and taking pleasure in reading all the details. The other thing I love is that she doesn't assume that you know what she means when she says female genital mutilation and then leave you to guess or to go research but instead tells you briefly but accurately and fully what she means and the implications of it. She also doesn't assume that because she translated something once right at the start of the book that you will remember what it means, which means no unnecessary flicking back and forward through the book trying to find out what she said it meant in the first place. This is good because it means the book just flows from start to finish.
I love that Although it is clear that she has a love of her homeland she writes in an unbiased light which again leaves you learning as opposed to judging.
I thought this was a really good book, but I think her first one sounds better. Desert Flower.
I also think it is great that she gives details on how to contact her charity at the end of the book. I also wish her all the best of luck with her charity and see it as a much needed one.

📖 «طلوع صحرا»، اثر «واریس دیری» و ژان دام، ترجمه «مریم سعادتمند بحری».
این کتاب ادامه کتاب گل صحرا از زبان خود واریس دیری است. و ماجرای سفرش به سومالی و دیدن خونوادهاش بعد از بیست سال رو تعریف میکنه.
از اینکه در کشورش هنوز حقی برای زنان قائل نیستند ناراحت میشه. در سومالی حتی اگر مردها کاری نداشته باشن و در خانه باشن، تمام کارهای خرید و حمل بطریهای سنگین آب و پخت و پز و گاهی ساختن و برپاکردن خانه و چادر و.... فقط به عهده زن هست و هیچکس بهش کمکی نمیکنه! حتی اگه زن باردار باشه و مرد بیکار!!! (آیا فقط سومالی اینجوریه؟)

در سومالی زنها در جامعه به هیچوجه نباید به چهره مردی مستقیم نگاه کنن و باهاش حرف بزنن. زنها اجازه ورود به بانک رو ندارن. در بعضی از رستورانها، محل غذا خوردن زنها اتاقک بسیار کثیفی پشت توالت است....
.
و واریس با همه این رفتارها برخورد میکنه، ولی جز عصبانیت طرف مقابل به نتیجهای نمیرسه. و فقط غصه میخوره.
من هم با خوندن این وضعیت، پر از خشم شدم نسبت به دین و جوامعی که زن رو پنهانکردن و ارزشی براش قائل نیستن...
.
واریس در روزهای آخر سفرش، با خانمهایی در ساختمانهای اجرای پروژههای سازمان ملل متحد که در سومالی برقرار شده بودند، آشنا میشه و براشون توضیح میده که خودش در نیویورک به فکر کمک به زنان سومالیه. موسسهای به نام طلوع صحرا داره و برای آگاهی و سلامت و بهداشت زنان و کودکان کشورش تلاش میکنه.

Taip, ši tema ypač aktuali. Taip, apie moterų padėtį 3 pasaulio valstybėse reikia kalbėti. Taip, tai siaubinga. Bet Waris, juk jau parašei vieną knygą. Užteks. Čia man panašu, kad pasisekus vienai daliai bandoma iškepti dar vieną ir dar vieną (taip yra dar ir 3 knyga) ir taip su tuščiu baku nuvažiuot dar keletą kilometrų. O kai visai sustoji tai išlipi ir stumi iki artimiausios degalinės.
Siužetas, kuris aprašyta ant viršelio - Waris grįžta aplankyti šeimos į gimtinę. Viskas. Siužetas baigėsi.
Viskas taip pritempta už ausų, kad vietomis net varčiau akimis. Kartais atrodo autorė pati nesuprasdavo kuo turi pasibaigti pradėtas scenarijus.
Kartais stebindavo - civilizuotame pasaulyje gyvena ilgiau nei Afrikoje, bet va kažkaip jai vis tiek nesuprantami dalykai ir ji niekaip negali priprasti prie jo.
Kartais (labai dažnai) stebindavo kvailumas - “savo sūnų pririšdavau prie nugaros skarom, apsivilkdavau striukę ir taip eidavo su juo į lauką. Žmonės ir draugais stebėdavosi, sakydavo uždūs. O aš tik juokdavaus. Mamos Afrikoje taip visada daro! Cha cha.” Afrikoje nėra striukių Waris! Ir tokių “mizanscenų” apstu.
Kartais atrodė, kad knygą parašė aštuntokas, maždaug “kitą dieną prižiūrėjau tėti. Pataisiau jam pagalvę ir užklojau antklodę”.
Žodžiu blogai. Labai blogai. Keliauja į kategoriją “šlamštas”.

I only liked this book because of its insights on everyday life as a desert nomad.
I hated the fact that she came back to Somalia hating so many traditions and feeling liberated by the ‘customs of the west’.
Regardless it was a decent light read but kind of a waste of time. Her first book was sufficient. None of the content in this book was that special that it needs to go into a second autobiography

One of the best books I have read in a while.
I've never really read an autobiography before, so this was something very new to me, and reading about such a strong woman was a great place to start.
I've never really read anything set in Afeica, so that was completely new to me. Seeing the different culture and traditions was truly educating - I couldn't put this book down.

Content Note: Genitalverstümmelung, Unterdrückung von Frauen
Nach dem Roman “Wüstenblume” folgt das Buch “Nomadentochter”. Waris Dirie erzählt ihre Geschichte weiter und nimmt uns auf ihre Reise nach Somalia mit. Auch dieses Buch hat wie das Erste wieder einmal Tagebuch-Charakter. Allerdings war die Chronologie, wie im ersten Teil, wieder eine Katastrophe (zumindest anfangs). Vieles war komplett durcheinander, da sie sehr oft vom eigentlichen Thema abkommt und auch abschweift. Hier war der rote Faden leider nicht wirklich erkennbar.
Viele Geschichten aus dem ersten Buch werden hier nochmal genauer beschrieben, obwohl es mir an einigen Passagen so vorkam, dass die Geschichten im ersten Buch ein wenig anders beschrieben waren/ passiert sind.
Allerdings wird die Genitalverstümmerlung nochmal genauer und zusammenfassender beschrieben. Ich fand es gut, dass das nochmal erwähnt wurde.
Die gesamte Reise nach Somalia zu ihren Eltern und Geschwistern wird genau und kleinteilig beschrieben. Und genau deshalb war ich so verwirrt, dass ein wichtiger Teil der Geschichte gefehlt hat.
Auch, wenn sich vieles wiederholt und manches einfach ausführlicher beschrieben wird, waren nichtsdestotrotz wieder interessante Geschichten dabei. Insgesamt hatte ich auch den Eindruck, dass Waris in den Jahren zwischen Buch 1 (1998) und Buch 2 (2002) wesentlich ruhiger, geerdeter und erwachsener geworden ist.
Lesen kann man dieses Buch auch, ohne den ersten Teil zu kennen. Das erste Buch ist meiner Meinung nicht so wichtig für die Handlung des zweiten Buches, da, wie bereits erwähnt, vieles wiederholt wird. Insgesamt würde ich aber eher “Wüstenblume” empfehlen, da es mehr über das damalige Leben von Waris aussagt.

Ik heb haar eerste boek, die Waris’ reis van Somalië naar het Westen beschrijft, niet gelezen. Ik denk dat het daardoor komt dat ik dit boek enorm kan waarderen. Het beschrijft juist de terugkeer van Waris naar haar Somalische familie, niet haar vlucht ervan. De terugkeer komt nadat ze twintig jaar heeft doorgebracht in Londen en de US. Ik vind het waanzinnig mooi en interessant hoe westers liberaal denken samenkomt met Waris’ diepe liefde en genegenheid voor haar familie en land. Rondom thema’s als FGM, vrouwenrechten en armoede levert die westerse ‘bagage’ van Waris soms spanning op, maar er is in het boek vooral verzoening en blijdschap. Dat is een perspectief wat naar mijn mening onderbelicht is, en ik vond het megaverfrissend en verheffend. Daarom 5 sterren!

Man patiko, kad ši Waris Dirie autobiografija „Juoda moteris, balta šalis“ parašyta labiau literatūriniu stiliumi, o ne sausais faktais. Tiesa, iki šiol esu skaičiusi tik biografijas jau mirusių asmenų, kurias parašė kažkas kitas. O čia buvo labiau įvairių nutikimų pasakojimas, lyg kalbėtum su seniai matytu pažįstamu ir klausytumeisi, ką jis veikė pastaruoju metu. Nors dėl to kai kur man nebuvo visai aiški laiko juosta, kas po ko nutiko. Maniau, kad iš pradžių buvo viena, tada kita, o vėliau paaiškėdavo, kad tie dalykai vyko lygiagrečiai.
Ir lygiai taip pat, kaip kitam nepasakotum tam tikrų savo gyvenimo dalykų, taip ir Waris šį bei tą nutyli, nors skaitytojui gali būti ir labai įdomu. Pavyzdžiui, kas jai nutiko per tas 3 dienas Briuselyje, kai ji nerado savo viešbučio ir niekas jai nenorėjo padėti? (Bet ir šiaip moters protelis – išeiti be piniginės, be telefono, į nežinomą vietą, net nežinant tikslaus viešbučio adreso...) Šioje vietoje atrodo, kad Waris norėtų išsikalbėti ir papasakoti, kas jai tuo metu nutiko, bet vis tik nepajėgia. Tad kam iš viso apie tai užsiminti?
Dar man labai smalsu buvo, kas jos vaikų (ypač antrojo, kuris gimsta šioje knygoje aprašomame laikotarpyje) tėvai. Nes ji absoliučiai neužsimena apie jokius santykius su jokiais vyrais ir todėl atrodo, kad ji iš oro tampa nėščia. Ir dar tas noras žūtbūt vaiką auginti vienai. Ar nepagalvojo, kad tėvas irgi turi teisę bent jau žinoti apie sūnų? Kaip ji gali ginti Afrikos moterų ir mergaičių teises, jei savo artimoje aplinkoje į ne visas jas atsižvelgia? O kaip vaiko teisė gimti saugioje aplinkoje? Waris kažkodėl sugalvojo paskutinę dieną iš Gdansko važiuoti traukiniu į Vieną, kai atrodė, kad ji beveik ims gimdyti tame traukinyje...
Knygoje nuo Waris Dirie kliūna visiems: tiek europiečiams, kad nesikiša į moters lytinių organų žalojimo problemą (nes tai „afrikiečių kultūra“), tiek afrikiečiams, kad nesistengia patys išbristi iš gilaus liūno (politinio nestabilumo, ekonominio nepritekliaus, vyraujančios prievartos). Be to, žodžių junginys „moters lytinių organų žalojimas“ buvo paminėtas taip dažnai, kad man net įgriso. Geriau jau būtų trumpintai, tarkim MLOŽ, minimas.
Ši knyga padėjo man šiek tiek globaliau pažvelgti į pasaulyje (ypač Afrikoje) vyraujančias problemas. Apie lygias teises girdime nuolat, bet lengva apie jas kalbėti, kai esame laisvi patys už save spręsti. Tačiau daug sunkiau yra padėti kitiems. Tam reikia daug ryžto, o Waris Dirie jo turi ir geba surasti daugiau tokių pačių ryžtingų žmonių.
Ir lygiai taip pat, kaip kitam nepasakotum tam tikrų savo gyvenimo dalykų, taip ir Waris šį bei tą nutyli, nors skaitytojui gali būti ir labai įdomu. Pavyzdžiui, kas jai nutiko per tas 3 dienas Briuselyje, kai ji nerado savo viešbučio ir niekas jai nenorėjo padėti? (Bet ir šiaip moters protelis – išeiti be piniginės, be telefono, į nežinomą vietą, net nežinant tikslaus viešbučio adreso...) Šioje vietoje atrodo, kad Waris norėtų išsikalbėti ir papasakoti, kas jai tuo metu nutiko, bet vis tik nepajėgia. Tad kam iš viso apie tai užsiminti?
Dar man labai smalsu buvo, kas jos vaikų (ypač antrojo, kuris gimsta šioje knygoje aprašomame laikotarpyje) tėvai. Nes ji absoliučiai neužsimena apie jokius santykius su jokiais vyrais ir todėl atrodo, kad ji iš oro tampa nėščia. Ir dar tas noras žūtbūt vaiką auginti vienai. Ar nepagalvojo, kad tėvas irgi turi teisę bent jau žinoti apie sūnų? Kaip ji gali ginti Afrikos moterų ir mergaičių teises, jei savo artimoje aplinkoje į ne visas jas atsižvelgia? In Desert Flower, Dirie told her story of a nomadic childhood in Somalia and her eventual escape immigration to the West; here she describes returning to Somalia for a visit after more than twenty years away.
It's true what they say; there is no feeling like it--there is no feeling like home. Oh how I missed that feeling of belonging to something much greater than myself. (180)
It's a homecoming, but Dirie also knows that she was right to leave Somalia, that she is better off in New York. Her visit is a complicated one, with Dirie at once completely at home in the desert, with her family, and also at odds with their more conservative mores and traditions. She describes clashes with her male relatives, who want her to cover up and be quiet (Dirie is willing to compromise on the former but has absolutely no interest in the latter), but also an understanding that although she was right to leave, her mother was right to stay; this is her home. It's clear, though, that change -- positive change -- will be slow.
The writing is, as with Desert Flower, energetic but rather scattered. She can be quite perceptive -- and isn't averse to turning her lens on herself as well as on others -- but the story could use a stronger framework. Still, she touches on a lot of things without easy answers. (Take for example her cousin, living in Amsterdam as a refugee -- no real interest in moving back to Somalia, but also no right to work or study in Amsterdam until conditions are 'better' in Somalia...whenever that might be. Talk of life being put on hold...)

After telling us her story in ‘Desert Flower’, Waris Dirie has dedicated Desert Dawn entirely for her long awaited visit to her relatives. It was a troubled time in Somalia and against all the warnings from people around her, she decides to make the visit. You can see the same stubborn and determined spirit which made her to run away as a young girl urging her to make the visit against all advices.
The incidents and feelings are presented in a very straight forward, yet moving manner. Waris’ struggle in trying to fit in to two cultures that are worlds apart is evidence. This same difference makes it difficult her relatives to understand her achievements. Despite of all the disagreements with her family, it shows how strong the family bonds are in their culture.
It is disappointing to see how hard it is to change the ideas rooted into the culture no matter how illogical they are. And how helpless Waris is in helping out her family and loved ones. All throughout the book it shows how dearly you can love your root, love your culture, at the same time rebelling against the setbacks.
It gives both insider’s and outsider’s view of Somalian life probably only somebody in Waris’ situation can give.
