During a daring raid on a secret Pirate stronghold in the Caribbean, Captain Rob McGregor of the Sea Dancer and his own pirate crew steal the infamous treasure belonging to Captain William Kidd. Rich beyond their wildest dreams, Captain McGregor and his band of pirates set out to sea, their ships' holds full of pirate booty.
When they are hit by the most intense electrical storm of the 17th Century, the Sea Dancer is transported through time to the year 2014. Bemused, hungry and thirsty, Captain McGregor and his crew sneak into a secluded bay in Puerto Rico, hoping to find food and water.
Instead they find a 'palace' : an exclusive five-star holiday resort for the rich and famous.
Scared, bewildered and desperate, they take over the resort, holding everyone hostage.
Quickly, the situation goes from bad to worse. Within hours of landing at the Blue Emerald Bay Resort, several of the crew fall sick. When one dies, the resort doctor identifies it as a unique and new strain of pneumonic plague, never before seen in the 21st Century, and an infection so deadly, that if it infects the residents of the Blue Emerald Bay and escapes the confines of the resort, could threaten to wipe out the human race…
Ian Irvine was brought up in Scotland, and studied Physics for far too many years, before travelling the world working for high-technology companies. Ian has spent a career helping build the internet and delivering its benefits to users throughout the world,...as well as helping to bring up a family. Ian enjoys writing, painting and composing in his spare time. His particular joy is found in taking scientific fact and creating a thrilling story around it in such a way that readers learn science whilst enjoying the thrill of the ride. It is Ian's hope that everyone who reads an I.C.P.Irvine novel will come away learning something interesting that they would never otherwise have found an interest in. Never Science fiction. Always science fact. With a twist.
The first of Ian's novels is a Genetic Conspiracy Thriller which explores the world of Stem Cell Research and encourages us all to ask some very searching questions about the advances that science is making, and how much we, or others, should let it affect society. A contemporary adventure, "The Orlando File" takes the reader around the world and back, and creates a unique moral dilemma that the reader cannot help but get embroiled in: at the end, the reader must ask themself, what would they do in that situation?
His second novel "The Crown of Thorns" explores the power of genetics, explores the questions that the potential to clone humans will raise, and asks the ultimate question...what would happen if a scientist found a way to clone Jesus Christ?
Ian's third novel "London 2012 : What If?" departs from the world of genetics and explores an interesting possibility that Quantum Physics raises:the possibility for parallel worlds to exist alongside each other...and what would happen if a man who wondered what other types of lives he could be living had he made other choices, where unexpectedly to step from one world into another parallel world. "What If" is also an interesting voyage through human emotions, and many readers will find themselves asking themselves similar questions that the lead character does as they read the book. As with both "The Crown of Thorns" and "The Orlando File", at the end of the book the reader is left thinking...and different readers may take away different views on how the novels did, or should have ended... It is hoped that in this way, the novels will make themselves ideal subjects for reading clubs or book clubs.
Ian hopes that if you honour him by spending the time reading one his novels, that you will find it a positive experience, and enjoy it. He also invites you to email him and let him know if you did or did not enjoy the novel. And if you did, what were your favourite parts?
Reading this book I can not do anything else but wonder what if a magnetic storm would sweep the earth . As you believe the sientific explanation in this book 4 tropical Storms could create a hurricane vortex. Sceary thing to face. Adventure mixed with historical and sientific writting with not to much charaters. I do love iT and I surely Will read the second book in this series.
I LOVED this book! Was a fantastic way to look at our past and imagine how our ancesters might have reacted to our modern world. I liked the two stories set in two different times and the way they intertwined throughout the story. It certainly tickled me to read of the pirates reaction, perhaps unrealistic as some people have commented but in fact how do we know?! I would love to see this book turned into a film :)
Certainly a different type of story. Rather slow to start with but soon sped up. By the end of the book I was well and truly transfixed. It is very well written with just a few typos. The slow start can not be speed read as the information is required to understand what happens later, as I discovers. Cannot wait to read the next book.
As the author Ian C.P.Irvine has mentioned this book as an ideal book for reading on holiday, it is true. I greatly enjoyed this book. And I am expecting to read the second part.
The story: Professor Derek Martin finds out that when two storms collide their electrodynamic energy can create an unstable singularity in space and he names it as Hunraken Vortex. Professor Derek works for Bush Center for Geo-Electromagnetic studies. The research was funded by US. Same time four hurricanes Josephine, Kyle, Isaias and Hanna were formed and a plane Stormchaser 3 is sent to capture the visuals for their support of Hunraken Vortex. The researchers get their proof of vortex formation but the Stormchaser 3 along with 11 members disappear into the vortex they were taken into 17th century.
The year 1699, Captain Rob McGregor and his ship The Sea Dancer with its rich treasure has narrowly escapes from the hurricane and unknown to them they time travelled to present day Puerto Rico. The ship is running out of provisions, drinking water and some of his crew were infected with fever.
So they plan to anchor near the island and steal food and water. But they cannot fathom the 21st century technologies. The island is a sea resort, Captain McGregor's men takes everybody in the island as hostages and finally Captain reaches the island and understands that they have time travelled. The resort Manager Sally informs the police by activating the alarm. The doctor in resort visits the ship and finds out that the fever is bubonic and pneumonic plague and might wipe out the human race if the outbreak is not stopped.
The story ends in a cliff hanger, as mentioned earlier this story is a page turner has lots of humour when the ship crew lands into the resort. The author has narrated beautifully the escape of Sea Dancer and Stormchaser 3. In 17th century they appear to be heroes but when they were in 21st century baffled by the technologies they look like complete fools. Below I will give the point of view of the crew when they look at the sea resort for the first time.
"The boxes were closed with a strange form of glowing glass. He would have to break the glass to let James and the others out. Raising his pistol one more time, he smashed the glass with the butt of the handle.
There was a loud bang, and the box went immediately black. Smoke came out from within, and suddenly the images of James Silver and Paddy and the others were gone."
The above lines is thoughts of Tyler who watches the CCTV image showing his friends and crew members trapped in the Sea resort.
I started reading this book without any real expectations. At first, I admit to being a bit bored but I plowed through it and I was glad I did. Once the 4 hurricanes collided, I was hooked.
Captain Robert McGregor is a pirate captain from 1699. They are caught up in a huge storm and lose the other ships that they sail with. Determined to keep the crew on his remaining alive, he does everything he can to get through the storm.
Meanwhile, in the year 2014, there is an experiment going on during this same storm. They are trying to prove the existence of the Hunraken Vortex and time travel. Their plane, Stormchaser 3, is in the eye of one of the hurricanes.
The 4 hurricanes collide and something happens. The plane disappears from the year 2014 without a trace, The pirate ship from 1699 appears in the year 2014 near Puerto Rico.
This is where I started giggling. The pirates are not used to our modern conveniences. The things they believe and are afraid of have me rolling in laughter. For a book that I wasn't sure I was going to like, I really ended up enjoying it. It started off slow but if you persevere through it then you won't be disappointed. I certainly wasn't. I do have lots of questions left unanswered but since this is book 1, I am sure when I read book 2 I will get the answers I am dying to know.

I have to say when I picked this book up I was quite excited by the blurb and it started out really interesting. The story line was captivating and the characters began to grow well with the story. Then I hit the but. It, for me, was a big But. Where the story began with good pace and the lay of it looked interesting enough to want me to look for the sequel I then became mired down in so much technical data that I lost total interest in the actual story. For those of us that have a reasonable interest and/or understanding of scientific jargon and data then it will be a superb read. If, like me, you need something that, while not necessarily an easy read, is at least understandable enough to be able to keep up with the plot then this probably won't be for you. Sorry Ian - for me this was a fail after such a promising start!
this book just grabs a hold of your imagination, and pulls you in. the info is there and presented in a way for any to understand. the questions that it brings up, are simply something most don't think of.
Well when I started to read this book I almost put it down after a couple of chapters! But knowing this writers works I decided to carry on and shortly was hooked !!! Well worth reading !
This was a good story. I found myself wanting to follow the missing hurricane hunter instead of the pirate crew. And I was quickly in the savage in the modern magic world story. Still, this was a good story and laid a good foundation for the next book in the series.
