A mind numbing opiate manufactured by persons unknown, distributed throughout the King's city. With thousands addicted, crime and civil disorder grow out of control.
For the stability of the nation, the distribution must cease. But with mysterious figures pulling the strings, only one that works in the shadows can get close.
Rothar, royal assassin, must infilitrate the layers of henchmen to reach the head of the snake, and cut it off.
I preferred this book to the first in the series. The main character is more likable and it somehow felt like a smoother read. The action is fast paced and there are some nice (and some not so nice) plot twists making it hard to predict how the story would unfold. The language sometimes[1] made it feel like I was reading a Conan the Barbarian short story, but it worked.
I had some issues with a medieval setting with fair kings, giant ogres and ...hot air balloons? The assassin also knew suspiciously much about different gases and their qualities. The balloons normally carried three persons plus some boxes with leaves. When needed, the extra weight of at least 4 additional persons plus 6 horses and packing was apparently ok too?
[1] "Rothar, looked back over his shoulder at the faithful and brave men riding behind him. Then he turned to look at the woman next to him, as brave as any man who followed and as beautiful as the sunrise."

Rothar must return to save Talia from Bakal; they were friends for too long. leaving her safely with Peregrin in Banewood, Rothar returns to his city to find it is slowly going mad. to find it's source, will it cost the lives of those he loves? can he truly save the city?
excellent continuation of the Rothar's story. nice expansion of his friends. good book all around
Assassin's Shadow (Veiled Dagger Book 2) by Jon Kiln
This was a very exciting book that kept me reading non stop from beginning to end. The assassin was a fantastic character that kept you rooting for him throughout the series. I can't wait to read the next book !
Author should have done some research on lighter than air craft. Loading that many many men and horses on a craft that was brought down by hand would have been impossible. It would have been immense.
