Ally Sweet is settling into life in Blue River. She loves spending time with her grandmother and making delicious chocolate creations. But then someone is poisoned by the chocolates from ‘Charlotte’s Chocolate Heaven’ and all the evidence points to Ally and Charlotte.
Detective Luke Elm is on the case, but with her grandmother’s business on the line and their freedom at stake Ally feels she has no choice but to try and find out the truth. Ally and Charlotte, with some help from Peaches and Arnold, do some digging to try and uncover the murderer. With the suspects piling up it is a race against the clock to discover who the murderer is so the chocolate shop doesn’t remain shut and Ally and Charlotte don’t land up behind bars.
Will Ally and Charlotte be able to find the killer before they go to jail? Or worse get murdered themselves? Will hunky Detective Luke arrest Ally? Or will they develop a new romance?
Though this book is not as good as its predecessor, I don't have the heart to rate it less than 5 stars. That's because this cozy mystery doesn't have the usual banes of books of its genre. So what are the banes of cozies?
I think too many bland characters, really too many to keep track of, is a negative. Many authors go for overkill when writing books that simply have too many people than it can contain. The result is a messy final draft. Also, some writers try to cram jokes wherever they can, and there comes a time when you don't care for the jokes because they are not funny.
Yet another no-no is the fact that the murderer hardly show up in the book, which makes it hard to guess that he/she committed the crime. Thankfully, a Deadly Delicious Delivery doesn't have this type of mistake. I enjoyed the mystery, and I enjoyed the locale, the simmering love angle, and the final reveal. That's it; catch you later.
Ally Sweet and her grandmother worked together in Charlotte's Chocolate Heaven, creating decadent delights. When they went together to the open day of the resort Charlotte planned to move to, they took two boxes of their famous chocolates. But when one of the elderly women was found dead in her room the following morning, it all pointed toward Ally and Charlotte and poisoned chocolates. They knew they hadn't done anything wrong, but Detective Luke Elm had to go through the correct processes. Would they find the killer before Ally was arrested? Ally was determined to oust the murderer, so with Charlotte, Peaches and Arnold's help, she set about her investigations, drawing danger to her side.
A Deadly Delicious Delivery is the 2nd in the Chocolate Centered Mystery series by Cindy Bell and it was light hearted and entertaining. Peaches (the cat) and Arnold (the pig) were wonderful, cute characters, while Charlotte (Mee-Maw) was the perfect grandmother. Recommended.
Kindle freebie at the time of download. All opinions expressed in my review are my own and not affected by the giveaway.
Ally gets super nosy and tries to save her grandmother. Is someone framing Charlotte? The detective in charge is really tough and mean. The police don't seem to do much investigating, not as much as Ally. There's a weird, creepy security guard who seems to have it out for Ally and she has no idea who he is. Then he ends up being dropped from the plot.
The MYSTERY is pretty good. I didn't figure out whodunit completely. I really thought it was someone else. Ally is the most annoying heroine since Hannah Swensen. She's a bit brighter but her stubborness and independence is reckless. Luke is a great guy and doesn't deserve her. He continunally tells her NO and she does it anyway. Ally! He's a trained professional!
The three regular customers, Mrs. White, Mrs. Cale and Mrs. Bing are funny but the biggest gossips in town. UGH. They eat Charlotte's inventory while they gossip and help move along the mystery. The old people at Freely Lakes act like petty children with their nasty rumors and fighting over stupid stuff.
The book has moments of humor, adorable pets and some yummy chocolate but not enough to save this series.
There are no less than 6 misspellings of espresso. Once I can see but 6? No. That's not acceptable.
Ally really needs to smarten up! It's hard to enjoy a series when you want to strangle the protagonist 50% of the time!
Overall Rating: 3.5 Stars
Title: 2 Stars - Trying too hard.
Characters: - Ally- 2.5 Stars - Seriously, the definition of TSTL most of the time, she frustrates the bejesus out of me! - Grandma Charlotte - 3.5 Stars - Stop allowing & encouraging your granddaughter to do stupid things! GC always starts to be the voice of reason but then backs down and gives in. UGH! - Luke - 4 Stars - Much more approachable, likable, and believable. His exasperation over Ally's antics is palpable and adds depth to his character.
Pets: - Arnold - 4 stars - Great supporting cast, and all around good boy. - Peaches - 5 stars! - The true heroine of the tale! Peaches was awesome! :)
Mystery: 3.5 stars - Good foreshadowing, but once you knew, you knew no matter how they tried to sow misdirection and uncertainty. It was still enjoyable to see how it all unfolded, though.
Not as good as the first one in the series. Didn't like how Ally just blatently goes against common sense and police orders to stay out of the case, but I guess that is part of this type of genre. In general I am enjoying the characters and will continue the series, at least those which I have, but will not search more out when I finish those.
Charlotte has decided to move to the retirement home and she and Ally take chocolates for the open house.
Myrtle Dent takes a box and dies after eating the candy. And of course Ally and Charlotte are prime suspects.
This is a cute story if predictable. And rather comical in the fact that Ally keeps insisting only she and her grandmother handled the chocolates and no one else. Even after it's proven the candy was poisoned. If this was a real person I would have felt bad for them digging their own grave.
The murderer was easy to figure out and motive was just as easy. Yet the book was a fun read.
I hope I get past the constant Mee-Maw's. If my grandsons kept calling me busia that much I would start to wonder if they were reminding who I was.
This mystery was good but the main character of Ally spoils the story as she is so determined she can solve the murder and find the killer even breaking in and contaminating a crime scene doesn’t seem to register the harm she is doing. Hope she learns her lesson because I have two more books in the series. I do the pets though and Charlotte is very likeable
This was better than the first installment and an enjoyable series. However, the author kept using expresso instead espresso and it annoyed the crap out of me.
Cute book just like the first one was. I like how it is about a wannabe Detective woman named Ally that is extremely close to her Mee-maw, Charlotte. The two ladies live together in a little 2 bedroom cottage with an orange cat and best friend of Ally named Peaches and a pot-bellied house pig named Arnold that belongs to Charlotte and that she regularly takes for walks.
Charlotte owns and works in a chocolate shop where Ally is the manager.
In this read Charlotte is looking into moving out of her cottage so that she can live in a place named Freely Lakes where she has virtually no responsibilities and also there’s a lot of activities for senior citizens her own age (retirement community, basically). Charlotte feels Ally needs her own space, so she is giving her cottage to Ally to live in where Peaches and Arnold will be her only company. Charlotte also needs her own freedom, too, and maybe some romance.
One of the residents of Freely Lakes is killed by antifreeze found in chocolates that Charlotte and Ally brought for the community’s open house. Detective Luke - who is very attractive to Ally and who also cares about Ally himself - has no choice but to close down the chocolate shop during his investigation into the murder. Luke knows Ally and Charlotte are not guilty of the crime, but the evidence is pointing to the ladies. It is up to Luke to find the truth; however, Ally isn’t one for patience so she begins digging into the puzzle pieces to find the guilty party. And of course she doesn’t exactly have to force Mee-maw to help her because the two get into hot water together, usually.
Can Ally and her motley crew put the puzzle pieces together in time to find the killer or will they become victims, too? Will Ally be arrested for once again breaking and entering?
Next book in this 21 book series is A Bitter Sweet Murder (A Chocolate Cozy Mystery Book 3).
I love this series and I have read every book in it. I suggest if you have not read any of this series, that you begin with the first book of the series and read them in chronological order. The main characters are Allie Sweet and her grandmother Charlotte Sweet who owns a chocolate bakery called Charlotte's Chocolate Heaven. Allie has an orange/yellow cat named Peaches and Charlotte has a pig named Arnold, who winds up staying with Allie when her grandmother moves into a retirement home. These two animals are quite adorable and add a lot to the storyline, and in several books winds up saving Allie and Charlotte's lives. I would recommend these books to everybody, young and old. They are clean cozy mysteries with memorable characters.
Wow Ally had to do some fancy detective footwork if she was going to get herself and Mee-Maw out of this mess! Someone died at a retirement home open house, and since it was Charlotte and Ally's chocolates the woman had, of course, the police had to look in their direction. But Ally wasn't going down without a fight as she sorted through various family members and retirement home possible suspects.
It was cute how Luke and Ally were growing closer but a shame this murder had to put a damper on it, although I'm sure that's just temporary! ;) Maybe Charlotte will find herself a special guy now that she's going to be living in the retirement community apartments. A super cute and clean series!
Ally’s “Mee Maw” was finally moving into a retirement home, where it appeared to be more like high school with its drama and gossip. Although she was happy for her grandma, Ally couldn’t shake the bad vibe she got from the place. Then one of the residents ends up dead from chocolates injected with antifreeze. And guess where those chocolates came from?
Suddenly, the girls must find out who poisoned the chocolates and clear their name of the “Chocolate Killers.”
Another enjoyable Chocolate Centered Cozy Mystery. Great characters and mystery. A chocolate delivery turns deadly and it appears that chocolates from Charlotte’s Chocolate Heaven were the possible murder weapon. Ally and Charlotte, and their sidekicks Peaches and Arnold, do some potentially dangerous digging for the truth. Looking forward to more Chocolate Centered cozies; recommend this series.
Charlotte has decided to move to retirement community, they're having an open house. Ally and Charlotte are taking a tour of the retirement community and notice Myrtle staggering, they think she's been drinking. They learn the next day Myrtle is dead, she was poisoned and Charlotte's chocolates are suspected of delivering the poison to victim. Ally has her work cut out if she's to prove their candy didn't poison her.
I read the "Chocolate Centered" series a few years ago and enjoyed all the books so much that I decided to read them over again! The trouble Ally gets into is always sorted out by Luke! Ally's cat and her grandmother's pot bellied pig play a big part in Ally's life by helping her! The whole series is fun to read, which is the reason I am reading this series again and from the beginning!!
Or can you? Apparently, in this book everything can go wrong. It's a cute series. A kick booty grandma and her had-her- heart- broken granddaughter team up to solve mysteries. With a handsome, small town detective to save the day, the trio gets it done.
I enjoyed this story, the author has done a great job of telling her story. Th characters in this suspense had a bit of trouble coming to the solution to this murder.
There are a lot of books in this series an I hope to read them all. I love mema she is a feisty little lady and the animals in this book are too cute. Ready for book number 3
Ally is settling in well in her little hometown. Grandma has decided to semi retire to a retirement home. She is excited to move to the next chapter of her life while Ally is grudgingly supportive.
But of course, someone dies. And they die of poisoned chocolates. Now, the 2 of them need to figure out how to save their livelihood because everything points to their shop. Once again Ally decides to start detecting herself and gets herself in trouble.
The characters are fun, the small town feeling is good. But the glaring neon signs of foreshadowing are blinding. And no one other than the main characters seem to have any depth. So the detective is gorgeous, so what? The group of elderly are gossips -ok, aren't they always in cozies?. But what do these characters do, what do they like? There is no substance to the characters other than Ally and Grandma. Further, what small town has s detective anyway?
This is a fun-loving grandmother and grandaughter deducing their way through danger but only enough danger to keep us interested.
They are delightful characters with two pets that contribute to the entertainment.
Cindy Bell uses her words to enable us to smell the decadent chocolates as their aroma fills the shop. When Mee Maw's kitchen is engulfed in the sounds and aromas of a delicious pot of coffee brewing while she pulls a dark, rich chocolate cake out of the oven, I'm more than ready to grab my own cup and Cindy's book to enjoy a delightful few hours solving the mystery. I may even top it off by using her receipe and creating dessert for my family.
A little quirky, short and sweet (and I'm not talking about the fantastic chocolate cake recipe at the end) . Easy read and easy figuring the murderer. Nice storyline. Like this author. And follow several of her mystery series. Liked the book
Easy read book 2. Ally has another mystery to solve after a murder. She & her Gradma Charote get. Involved in betwee runninh Heavenly Chocolate Shop. Det. Like Elms startsvliking Ally. Lots of action & laughs. You want to put this book dow. More to read in this series!
A fun and quick read. There is also a yummy recipe at the end. How can you go wrong! Ally finds herself as a suspect once a woman is found dead. Will she be able to figure out who did it or will she get arrested.?
