Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead. The team behind critically thermonuclear floor-fillers Young Avengers and PHONOGRAM reunite to start a new ongoing superhero fantasy with a beautiful oversized issue. Welcome to THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, where gods are the ultimate pop stars. But remember: just because you're immortal, doesn't mean you're going to live forever.
Got this for a dollar. Really great art work. I like the premise of this, however its been out since 2014 and it doesn't look like its ending soon. I'll wait till the series is over or semi over to read it.
Why I picked it up This was on the $1 comics table. I had heard people raving about it, so I figured why not test it out?
The Art Jamie McKelvie’s art is clean and polished. There are tiny details when it matters and simple lines to keep things from getting over complicated at other times. Though I think the colorist, Matt Wilson, is responsible for making it shine. The pallet and coloring effects (like for glows, exploding heads, and transitioning hair dye) just really cement the look.
The Story Kieron Gillen starts the story by ending another. It’s a bit of foreshadowing, letting the reader know that there’s an end to this tale and here’s a whisper of it. So for brief period the story is in 1923, but then it comes to modern, now-ish (2014). And it feels like now and we see a goddess from afar and then meet Lucifer. Lucifer evoked a “love ya, but I wouldn’t be able to deal with you in real life” feel from me at the very start. And since I emotionally invested, the ending… Not spoilering. Go spend a dollar and read it!
The Intangible Stuff Do I want more? YES! Am I willing to overlook that leaning tower of comics I am growing? No. Is this on my “must buy as soon as I read all that” list? Yes!
I had no idea at all what I was getting into when I read this. I got a free code to download. So, I thought why not read it? I didn't read the summary for it or anything. I was just drawn to the really cool looking cover. The art on the inside was just as good as the cover art was. I've never heard of Jamie McKelvie before, but I'll keep an eye out for the name from now on because I'm in love with his art. Art gets 4 1/2 stars.
I'd never heard of Kieron Gillen either. His writing, at least in this small sample, is amazing. I got hooked by the premise of the story right off of the bat. This is definitely an adult comic with some great themes explored. I want to get my hands on the second volume now.
I was going to wait for the bind up, but then I spied this beautiful Bryan Lee O'Malley and I could not resist. And I'm not entirely sure what the plot of this series is but colour me curious! Ready for more.
I'm really glad that I only picked up the first issue, not really my cup of tea. Couldn't get into the story. Maybe it's bc I only read the first volume. But that's what you hope to get out of the first taste, something that sucks you in leaving you wanting more.
This was so cool and interesting, the colours were amazing! I decided not to read the blurb for this one and just go for it, again this is just a one issue book. I'm that there is a god reincarnation plot or something similar to that, the designs for the character are gorgeous and so far the story itself is really interesting. I am definitely going to try and continue this or find physical copies of the volumes.
I read this book my freshman year of college before I had any idea of the world of graphic novels. I loved the dynamic characters, excellent visuals with popping colors, and queer representation. I read all nine volumes of this series as they were released and was not disappointed. I am a big fan of mythological retellings, and this series certainly delivered. I would certainly recommend this graphic novel.
