Eighteen year old Micah has lost everything. His parents are going through a nasty divorce and the world seems to have abandoned him. He might as well not exist. Some trouble with loan sharks lead him to a man they call Wacko Rey who cuts a deal with Micah to keep him alive. But Rey isn’t called “Wacko” for nothing and Micah is about to find that out for himself when the night takes an unexpected turn.
Two well told tales of torture, darkness and domination. I am excited by Sam Tepes work and after reading this, I hope to somehow score a copy of her limited chapbook, Philosophy of Ghosts, though I may already be too late.
This is my first read by Sam Tepes and I must say this was a creative masterful story. I thought the storyline had so much strength and was well written. It is very much a darker wicked little read that will have your head turning. Some of the content won’t be for everyone but I found this story gripping and bone chilling at times. The characters are memorable and will touch a little piece of you. I found myself reflecting on these men for a while after finishing this novella.
Micah is the main character who finds himself in a horrible predicament after owing a lot of money to a drug lord. What I absolutely loved about him was his strength and honesty within himself. He knows what he craves and while he may not realize the depth of what it is he craves he doesn’t waiver on it.
I won’t go into many details about the plot of the story because it will just be spoilers. This is a very fast paced story that is worth a second read after you finish it just so you can savor the details of this gripping story. I can say if you are in the mood to venture onto the dark side then I would most definitely give this tale a read.
This is two very short reads and my first Sam Tepes book.....The first one Hurt was my fav...really well written and quite a surprise at the end....The second one was just as surprising.....Just shows short reads can be just as enjoyable as longer reads x
This was a very intense reading, I really liked it. There’s two short story here, very different from one another but the two of them are really good. I knew about this book after reading a review from an author I like, I’m very glad I give it a try because it’s great
Hurt is the first one. It had Micah, who is struggling to survive in a world very different than where he comes from. That makes him take some difficult choices that puts him where he is now. This was a great story, so unexpected, I enjoyed it so much. It was very interesting to see Micah’s reactions and the decisions he take. It was very dark and with some strong emotions, very good story.
Circular is the second story, It doesn’t say much about it in the summary, but I won’t say too much either because I think most comments about it might bring come possible spoilers. The only thing I have to say about it is that is very different from Hurt, but is just as good, the characters, especially Rex, had some interesting way to think.
Both stories were amazing, I enjoyed both just as much. It was interesting to see the dark side of human beings and, at some points, try to understand the way they think. A very nicely done book. But It might not be appropriate to everyone, I strongly recommend to read the tags before reading, it contain some elements that might be offensive to some readers, so beware before reading it.
I have to admit I really Love Tepes style. It's got that lovely natural gritty feel and it doesn't lack any balls when it comes to portraying the realities of why someone (Micah) does what he does, even if he doesn't know himself, at times.
It's a rough and brutal read, but right up my alley because it doesn't sugarcoat or attempt to romanticize any aspect of what Micah does... ah... It's hard not to say.... But just -- read the content tags and go in with DMC mind!!!
Hurt is just one of those dark delights with a spiraling plot, and from an author that shows a hell of a lot of promise!!!
There were a few minor copy edit issues, but the style made it easy to gloss over those and just genuinely enjoy the story.
I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Two short stories; which I'm not usually a fan of but wow, powerful writing and exactly the right length to draw out the suspense.
We get to know Micah immediately and are aware of his thoughts, feelings, fears etc. On the face of it a story about the dark side of sex but on second glance its about power exchange and control. This story stayed with me long after I read it.
In the second short we meet Elijah, another male caught in a bit of a dilemma as he is held captive in a basement. I don't want to provide any spoilers so all I will say is these two delightfully twisted stories were well worth a read. Very well written and atmospheric.
This is two really short stories. One is about a young man who basically had everything taken away from him, is addicted to drugs and finds himself in a really bad place, turning to bad people to save him from the even badder people. It is harsh, but very well written and over way too quickly even though I wanted the bad stuff to end.
The second was about another man with not a whole lot going for him. In a dead-end job he hates but seems to everyone to be just a guy getting by. When he gets home, we learn the real truth, and it isn't pretty. What ensues is a delicious little horror story that ends with a what comes around, goes around.
Again, these were really short, but I really liked the style and will definitely be looking for more from this author in the future.
Another new writer I am falling in love with. Hurt is definitely memorable. Dark and shocking at times. The content may not be everyone's cup of tea. But if you like something edgy, don't pass this by.
