Trapped with Ms. Arias:Part 1 of 3 From Getting the File to Being Ready for Trial

Rate this book
Most people became interested in the State of Arizona v. Jodi Arias January 2, 2013, when opening statements were delivered. Over time that interest became a media sensation and a world-wide phenomenon. However, as her attorney I know that what you saw at trial is only part of the story. Have you ever wondered what happened before the trial began, what it was like to deal with Ms. Arias when the cameras were not rolling? In this book I detail for the reader what happened before the case began, what happened before the cameras were on. I detail the things that you do not know, things that will describe my reality, the reality that I was "Trapped with Ms. Arias."

This book was REALLY hard to get through. I followed this case closely - so was excited to hear a perspective from someone who was actually there.
Mr. Nurmi managed to fill an entire book with a lot of words saying....absolutely nothing.
From a writing standpoint:
The writing was HORRIFIC - I often wondered if anyone even edited/proofread it at all.
Incomplete sentences, repeated phrases ("Think about it," "If you don't believe me") - and sentences that circled back on the previous sentence (did he have a word count guideline to meet?) "I learned a great deal about her crime. The reason I learned a great deal about her crime was..."
From an informative standpoint:
I'm not sure if i'll have the patience to read through the second and third book Nurmi will follow up with, but for anyone interested - the first book tells NOTHING. It is almost more of a tease to the reader of information of what's to come in the next two books.
I had a hard time pinning down his true feelings, and point of view. He also would bring up something and then follow it up with, "but since that is confidential I cannot tell you exactly what happened."
Huh? Then why bring it up?
I would NOT recommend spending money on this book. :(

I finally got around to cracking this one open. Granted, there are the parts here and there that were truly new and behind the scenes information telling about Nurmi's interactions with Jodi Arias. It really brought me right back to the time of the trial all over again when I was glued to my TV and laptop. But there's far too much ink wasted on what's coming in current and future chapters, and even worse are the teasers for what's being saved for the future two books that are sadly now so far overdue that I personally doubt they are happening. The ends saying look for part 2 in 2016 but it's now the beginning of September 2017 and instead of book 2 and even book 3 to see if all of Nurmi's promises were fulfilled, there are just cricket sounds. What a letdown.

Ugh. This book is all about the author. Very little about the case itself. He talks about Ms. Arias hating him yet never mentions why. He pushes his upcoming books more than he talks about what is in this one. I was hoping for insight into Jodi's behavior and psychological state but you get very little of that-nothing more than you can find online. I will not be reading the additional books the author puts out and I do not recommend this one.

In, “Trapped with Ms. Arias”, Kirk Nurmi presents quite a bit of interesting information regarding his preparations to serve as Jodi Arias’ defense attorney. His intense dislike for Ms. Arias is made very clear. Several times he tried to withdraw from the case, but was ordered by the court to remain. He appears to have a persecution complex and feels that many people hate him for defending such a brutal murderer. Accordingly, he writes very defensively. His composition and style are nothing short of terrible – he rambles and repeats himself too often. His grammar is that of a junior high school student – sentence fragments, misspelled words, sentences ended with prepositions, and others.

Mr. Nurmi would have produced a good read if he had cleaned up the above-referenced issues prior to publication. I suggest that for his proposed second and third books in this series, he go to an established publisher or seek the assistance of an experienced editor. This writing is an embarrassment.

First off, I will admit that Mr. Nurmi proves that he does not like Jodi Arias. Perhaps, had he been given the chance to be removed as her attorney, things could have ended differently (death penalty vs life). That being said, for someone who completed college and finished law school, one would think the man could spell. I had many difficult moments trying to get beyond misspellings that most elementary students wouldn't have made. I also have to take issue with his description of Salt Lake City. A boring place on a Sunday? I lived there for two years, am not Mormon, and found lots to do and see.
There was really nothing in this book that wasn't already public knowledge. Knowing he has two more books to get through the trial is crazy. He could have very easily gone through everything in one book, and saved the sanity of the reader.
That being said, if you still want to read it, save your money and check it out at the library.

I thought it was a good book for people like me who watched the trial and were curious to find out more about what it was like for her lawyer to deal with her. Nurmi explained why he defended her the way that he did and talks about how much he did not like her. I enjoyed it.

Overall, the book was a disappointment as there was not that much "insider" information relayed. There are no pages of trial evidence, photos, documents, etc., but the reader is routinely told to search for same on the internet. Mr. Nurmi did convey his assessment of the evidence and trial strategy, which I found interesting, but I would have liked a bit more information about the entire legal process in Arizona in terms of description and chronological organization. Even being an attorney myself, I do not practice criminal law and practice in another state, so I was not familiar with the agency from which he received the file, why "interviews" rather than depositions of witnesses are conducted, etc. However, the most notable fact is that this book is INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO READ due to the horrible grammar. It is as if it was never proofread and reads as if it was written as a stream of consciousness exercise.

I can't remember the last time I was so glad to finish a book. As Mr. Nurmi likes to quote, facts are, indeed, stubborn things. The fact is, I read the reviews before buying this book, and I bought it anyway.

My 3 biggest issues with this book are:

1. Run-on sentences with little or no punctuation. How does one earn 4 college degrees and not have the ability to use a comma? I am not a grammatical expert, but sentences like this made the book so difficult to read:

"Let's face it, the government always has the moral high ground in a criminal case and the cards are always stacked against the defense attorney but for the wall of liberty that protects us all to mean anything the capital defense attorney must do all they can do to accomplish their ultimate job, to save their client's life."

2. Pages of the book with sentences telling the reader nothing more than what will be described in future chapters:

"...in Chapter 14, I talk about... In Chapter 15, I talk about...., In Chapter 16, I talk about...." and so on.

3. I understand that Mr. Nurmi did not come out of this trial unscathed. I purchased the book after seeing him interviewed on a show, "In Defense Of". I thought it was a good interview, and I thought it would be interesting to hear more of his experience. I, and many other readers, realize he was doing his job, whether we liked the methods or outcome. But Mr. Nurmi's viewpoint seems to be proving to EVERY reader that he was right and EVERYONE reading the book needs to be chastised for not agreeing with him. (The sentence below could also demonstrate my first point above.)

"Rather than argue with you or defend myself from attacks that are baseless, let me conclude this chapter by reminding you that the law related to capital cases is such that if Ms. Arias was forced to proceed to trial without having had these issues resolved and she was sentenced to death it is almost a certainty that Ms. Arias would receive a new trial. Is that what you would like?"

I don't remember ever writing a review of this length or specificity on Goodreads. But, as we are reminded in way too many places in the book, "Facts are stubborn things." The final fact I have to offer is this: Mr. Nurmi was in sore need of an editor. Grammatically, certainly. But also content. A good editor would have condensed this information enough that there would be no need for three installments. It could have been edited to one final book that was a good read, regardless of one's opinions on the case.

Like many others have said, I will not purchase the remaining two installments, should they ever be published. Mr. Nurmi had one shot at getting his version of events out there. Many who read this first portion will never read the remaining portions and, thereby, never find out Mr. Nurmi's defense strategies or opinions on the trial itself or sentencing phase.

Trapped is a GREAT description

Of not just how he felt with Jodi Arias but also how I felt while reading his book. With that being said, I realize that Nurmi is/was a talented attorney it a novel writer. I read every word and found them all interesting but challenging to slog through. Even so, I intend now to read Parts 2 and 3, even though I expected going in that I wouldn’t need to since I watched the trial on TV and have seen every television program about this case. Mr. Nurmi makes as compelling and probably accurate a case for what is wrong with Jodi as anyone could. He demonstrates remarkable abilities to stay balanced, even about Juan Martinez!

It is a shame and really a travesty of justice that Jodi Arias was able to cause Nurmi to loose his ability to practice law because of the publication of this book. He still protects many of her secrets, repeating (much to my nosy frustration 😜) multiple times in this book the phrase “attorney/client privilege” or other phrases that protected her privacy. He is far more the gentleman and professional than I would have been. After she had robbed me of my livelihood I’m sure I would have likely returned to the book and revised it to reveal every nasty secret there was to tell. I am one of the readers that would have probably purchased it again, just to learn what had been left out. As the book is, in my opinion,

I think Jodi comes across as much of a victim of a lifetime of her poor, sad circumstances that led to overwhelming lousy decisions that began long before the day of the murder. But make no mistake, Jodi was so manipulative, she was unable to be only a victim, or if she was a victim, she was not Travis Alexander’s victim, neither was he one of her victim, until the last act(s).

It is a sad story that Mr. Nurmi gives wonderful insight to. Thanks for writing the book. I was already thankful to be in a happy, healthy relationship, but thinking about the angst of having to navigate the world of dating and meeting a mate, even within the supposed good ground of the church and the legal arena that these two were surrounding themselves with. I’m glad, very glad to be an old, boring married person!

I don't know why this book has gotten so many bad reviews, I found it to be quite a pageturner. I will admit that I wanted to read more about his dealings with Jodi, and the client attorney privilege that prohibited him from sharing "the good stuff" is quite a bummer. That's the reason this book doesn't get 5 stars from me. I understand Nurmi's need for redemption, I really do. And I feel like he got it. Nurmi lays out what he is going to talk about in the book, which is very helpful. He really doesn't try to fool you into thinking you're going to get juicy stuff on every page. I'll admit that he repeats himself too much sometimes. And I would rather read secret stuff about Jodi than learning about the trial details but I did find almost all of it very interesting. Especially the part about visiting Jodi's family in Yreka. This book is worth reading to get to know more from the "other side". I would recommmend it, I'm just sorry that book 2 and 3 (that promise more info) may not be published because of Jodi's lawsuit against Nurmi.

Summary

I never had bad feelings toward Mr Nurmi. I always felt he did the best job he could. Ms. Arias ,in my opinion, left him little to work with. No Mr. Alexander did not deserve to die. In my opinion when you are dealing with adults ,which they were, you know when playing with fire sometimes you get burned. When I listened to the TV about the two of them and what they did together ,sexual I mean, I could plainly see that the blame was not hers alone. The book was a fair read but I am not sure if I will read next book. Mr. Nurmi in my observations repeated himself to much, that is the reason for the 3 stars.

This is more accurately titled: Getting Even with Ms. Arias.

Mr. Nurmi tells as much as he can and I can only imagine the steam coming out of her ears from her jail cell in the middle of the Arizona desert.

Totally enjoyable, homespun Nurmi, writes the way he speaks. It was interesting to learn about his point-of-view of the case while he performs an inside job on his client.

Horrid book. Not because of the subject matter but Mr Nurmi, you were not informative. Word Salad is my nicest comment. Wish I could get that time back I wasted reading this.

I had a great deal of difficulty reading this book and
there's is alot of information that is not necessarily new to me.
In fact, it felt like the writer had a huge ego and just wanted to justify certain actions.
I am disappointed because I didn't learn any new information and It sounded to me like a justification for the defense lies!
Yes, the job was to save a life. I get it! I also get that the defendant had a constitutional right to defend herself.
However, the defense that was presented was slippery and untrue. Travis was dragged through the mud and made to look like a horrible guy. The presentation from Nurmi and Willmott was disgusting.
Reading this book does not change my opinion of Nurmi and Willmott.
Nurmi slouched, appeared disinterested, fell asleep, picked his nose and appeared to be an a unethical liar.
Willmott pranced around like an angry school girl and told lie after lie and had the most annoying voice.
Unfortunately, nothing in this book changed my opinion that Nurmi and Willmott are unethical liars.
They could of presented the facts of the case, but chose to slippery and supported the lies of a proved liar.

I purchased this book after hearing that Mr Nurmi wrote it and was disbarred for violating his ethical duties to his client. I thought it would be instructive to me to see how difficult a position he was put in that he felt it was worth relinquishing his career so perhaps I would be able to avoid pitfalls in my own legal career. Sadly I was disappointed. This book was poorly written just from a stylistic perspective, poorly organized , superficial in its analysis of the case, and overall seemed more an attempt at therapy for the author than any effort to educate the public about the case. It did nothing to rehabilitate Mr Nurmi's public image and only convinces me that getting out of criminal defense was a good thing for him to do.

Egregious Grammatical Errors

Kirk obviously did not have an editor and could have greatly benefitted from one. I have read thousands of books in my life and have never seen such a rough draft. Incomplete sentences made it difficult to understand what he was even trying to say. Run on sentences, huge lack of punctuation, even using "there" when it should have been "their"; I expected much better from an attorney. It made for a very tedious read. I am obsessed with the Jodi Arias case but would not recommend purchasing this book for more insight. For that, Juan Martinez's book was much better.

Confusing

Interesting...but sometimes a hard read. Confusing. He babbles on a lot. And constantly refers to previous chapters or the next book he is writing. He speaks a lot about how Travis used her and she was his little victim. But also constantly refers that Jodie was controlling every situation regarding the case. Very manipulative. Did he ever consider that maybe she controlled and manipulated Travis too? Making him weak to go against his beliefs. After all he is just a man.

Trapped

I was held captive by this trial. This book cleared up some of my questions. I thought Jodi Arias was nuts but I do believe she had some issues that allowed her to get caught up in a death match with Travis Alexander. She wanted to prove to him she was a “nice girl” against his double standard. I agree that if this toxic relationship ended he would still be alive. I don’t think she belongs in the Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacey category. Life in prison is what she deserves and now I realize why.

Interesting, liked hearing Kirk's perspective on his client. A bit too much 'selling' of future volumes, and there was quite a bit of duplication between chapters. None the less, a good peek into the behind the scenes of what goes on during trial prep and a defense lawyer getting to know his client. I appreciated the education around the responsibilities of a defense attorney and the things he must do whether he agrees with them or not. Interesting that his initial defense strategy is different than how things end up. Will probably get the next part to understand that.

No dogs in this fight!

As one who neither fawned over the prosecution, or fell under the so called spell of Ms Arias I read this book as a balance to the states narrative. Mr Nurmi comes over as a self serving defence lawyer who still believes in the evidence set forth by the experts he called. Any objective viewer of the trial is expected to put aside the obvious mistakes they made during their diagnostic phase and giving evidence. However, let the reader be the judge.

I enjoyed most of the content of the book as it was addressing Arias' lawyer's perspective on receiving the case and his initial dealings with Jodi. However, the amount of times I read, "in my next two books...." I wanted to throw it. There was no need to constantly reference what would be elaborated on in further books. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear those books will ever be written and/or released. Otherwise, all in all, it was enjoyable.

When I saw the low rating before reading the book I assumed it was from that army of (mostly) middle aged women who watched the trial and hated Jodi Arias so much they even hated the idea of a public defender.

Having read it I can confirm that the book has a low rating because of the appallingly bad writing style. A really difficult read because of how poorly set out it is. It reads like a book written by someone who has never read a book. Such a shame.

INeresting book indeed. But too many "repeats".

Ms. Arias no doubt - was mentally not OK ! and Mr. Travis wanted
someone to have sex with without really getting involved.

Many men feel the same way (myself included) but I am now 88 years
(Next month) so it's many a Moon ago !" Happily Married now -
but back in the sixties !!!

This book is poorly written. The author constantly repeated and explained ahead what information would be revealed in each chapter. I also found it contradictory in many places, for instance there is nothing that says the killer had to have “sensible” reasons for anything she did. Remember, she was the one that lied about the Ninja idea on public television…there was no logic in doing that.

Could have been done in 150 words

Repetitive, one statement repeated over 3 paragraphs. Nurmi thinks everyone is an idiot or 3 rd graders are reading this. I wish I had a dollar for every time he says "in my next book". Very disappointing, no real details due to client confidentiality. Sorry I wasted my money.

I followed the trial closely and I thought this book was good. Interesting perspective from someone who spent so much time with Jodi Arias. I agree with other readers that it may not be the most well written book, but he's not an author by trade so...... I hope he comes out with the other 2.

This wasn't a bad book to read, and I did enjoy it at certain points, but there were a lot of grammar issues which distracted me. This is why I'm giving it a 3 star review.

Waste of money

Had a difficult time reading and finishing this “book”. This is not about Jodie but only a self proclaimed book on how great I am and if you don’t Agree you hate the constitution.
It is no wonder Jodie got life with this incompetent person as her lawyer.
