Unfinished: A First Love, Second Chance Romance

Rate this book
One summer, one secret, one last chance . . .

Nicole Chandler was seventeen the summer she fell in love with Jake Evans, the sexy, rough-around-the-edges mechanic who came to work in her father's marine repair shop. At twenty, Jake had seen more of the dark side of life than any kid ever should, yet underneath the hard exterior was a man who protected and cared for what was his.

For Jake, Nicole was a sunshine he’d never known—sweetness and innocence, feisty, brave, funny. And definitely sexy. He knew he shouldn't love her, yet she believed in him as no one ever had and made him laugh as though life might turn out okay. When the summer ended, Niki held his heart.

Then she broke it.

His secrets, her misunderstanding—the mistakes they both made—sent their lives on different paths, their story unfinished. Yet twenty-three years later, they still remember.

Nicole, now a successful artist, is starting over. When Jake finds her again, she’s ready to believe in what they once had. Yet after years of being alone, driven by nothing more than success, he may learn to forgive; but he can’t seem to forget. And he’s damn sure never again going to feel the pain of having someone he loves and trusts walk away from him.

Young love is fragile, but with histories and exes and families, grown-up love is messy. And while building trust is hard, rebuilding what was once shattered may be impossible.

Does first love ever really get a second chance?

Full-length, standalone novel

Just sayin’ . . . In Texas, the nights are steamy, the food is spicy, and the lovin’ is both. If this isn’t your kind of read, best give this one a pass.

Do you remember your first love back when you weren’t quite an adult? You know the one, you thought you would never get over it. Nicole was seventeen when she met the “love she would never get over.” Jake was a little older, a little more damaged, but Nicole actually believed in him, made him smile as she brought blue skies and sunshine into his lonely days.

The summer they met was like a perfect dream, except for the secrets, the misunderstandings and their youthful inability to realize what real love entailed. They made a promise and one of them would break it and shatter the heart of the other and someone else would ensure they never learned the truth. Years went by, Nicole married her best friend and Jake went on to make something of himself, to quiet the darkness of his past and never be helpless again. Their paths never converged, by design or by fate, who knows.

Fast forward over twenty years, past the confessions of others, past the defeat of a marriage of companionship and respect, but not all-consuming love and Nicole finds herself single, a successful artist and in the company of Jake one more time. Will the years and life experiences put what they had in perspective or will they discover that they were right, they were meant to be together?

When we are young we are told we are not mature enough to understand love, to work at getting past the hurt and anger, but Nicole and Jake seem to be trapped in a time warp, desperate to be with the other, but repeating the same mistakes over again. Wealthy, successful, a business mogul now, Jake reverts to the damaged mechanic he was when he met Nicole and she becomes the insecure teen with doubts. This is their one chance to face true love head on, scars and all, the chance to act like an adult and talk, listen, trust and believe, no more secrets, no more misunderstandings, are they strong enough to risk the future and accept the past as it is?

Susan Hammond’s Unfinished is a heartbreaking tale of mistakes, misunderstandings, heartbreak and never letting go. The heart knows what the heart wants and even a wonderful life that one wouldn’t change doesn’t fill that empty need for that one special person. Not many people get a second chance to finish their story, but even if you have never been a romantic, this tale will wrench you deep within your soul. Feel the frustration of being the fly on the wall, rage at the mistakes you see happening, cry when the devastation is the worst. Relish in watching Nicole and Jake coming to terms with the hand life dealt them and moving past the muck and mire of the past, all while hoping they find a happy ever after.

I received this copy from Susan Hammond in exchange for my honest review.

What a lovely surprise this book was, a second chance romance and beautifully written.

The story starts off after a short prologue that gives you a hint of what's to come and it's worth a look back after you have finished the book. Nicole is a gifted painter and she often would spend time with her mum down at the old boathouse watching her sketch and paint. Her mum has not long passed away through illness and Nicole back home for graduation is taking time to paint on the deck overlooking the lake once more.

It's here we are introduced to Jake, he's working for Nicole's father for the summer and staying in the boathouse. Niki's brother Rob has arranged this but as you get into the story you will find out why.

I loved the sweet build up of young love between Nicole and Jake and it wasn't rushed so that you really felt how much they cared for each other. When the major 'thing' happens that tears them apart for twenty three years you want to scream 'if only' but Susan Hammond has written a heartwarming romance that love prevails no matter what is thrown at our two lovers. When they meet again lots of past secrets are revealed, both of them have to fight for the truth and each other.

I'm looking forward to the next book by this author a superb read and I highly recommend it.

I absolutely loved Unfinished: A First Love, Second Chance Romance by Susan Hammond. The title indicates the general plot line but there is so much more to the book and it delves so much deeper into the trials and tribulations of a lost first love rekindled over 20 years later.

The book is broken into three parts, including a prologue, which I strongly suggest the reader re-read at the end of the book. I did and am glad I did.

In Part One, the action takes place over the course of one summer. Nicole's mother has died a few months ago and this is the summer before she goes to college. She meets Jake, a young man with a troubled past who her brother, Rob, has taken under his wing in hopes of turning around his destiny. Jake and Nicole are instantly drawn to each other. The book does a good job of having their relationship progress slowly and steadily over the course of the summer. They separate at the end of summer with a promise to meet on Memorial Day not quite two years later. Through a bit of a plot contrivance, they don't meet and go their separate ways.

Jake is an honorable young man in his dealings with Nicole as well as his job, but he is secretive, which costs him in the end.

Nicole is basically sweet, sassy, uncomplicated, unspoiled, and inexperienced. She was written against the stereotype of the spoiled rich girl--a very good thing. I appreciated that she was just a nice young woman who though sad about the loss of her mother and dealing with her grief, was not unreasonably full of angst.

Part II fast forwards over twenty years and finds Michael, one of Nicole's two best friends, now her husband, but he asks her to leave him. He realizes that she still has feelings for Jake and can't continue to live with that knowledge, knowing that half his life, 2/3's of his adult life is still ahead of him. Jake hears about the divorce and instantly puts in motion plans to move back to Austin from Chicago, his home of many years. Eventually Jake and Nicole hook up; the love, passion and fire, buried by both of them for so may years flames anew, hotter than ever. That said, it isn't easy for them and they have to deal with many issues, buried emotions and heavy baggage from their pasts to work towards a happily-ever-after. I appreciated the dichotomy between their early lives, which added considerably to the issues they needed to resolve. This is the compelling nuts and bolts of the book and I loved it; and I loved this book, which kept me awake at all hours of the night and early morning hours. It was how this road was written that, for me, made this book superior to many other romance novels.

Besides Nicole and Jake, there is a strong supporting cast, most noteworthy their siblings, Rob and Grace. Rob is pertinent to both Nicole's and Jake's individual stories. Rob is a truly decent human being. Each sibling offers unwavering love, support and counsel.

I highly recommend this book.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Though this is a glowing review, I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions stated are solely my own.

"Unfinished: a First Love, Second Chance Romance" by Susan Hammond

My Thoughts...

'Unfinished' was a good contemporary romantic read..maybe a little long but still good where you will find plenty of 'love and forgiveness.' This read will definitely keep you turning the pages to see what was going to happen next as the story deals with some real deep issues. The two main characters...Nicole and Jake along with the secondary characters were all well developed, defined, portrayed, colorful and very believable as the reader will see as the story unfolds. Truly the 'psychological depth' of these characters were simply off the chart...well done! All of this only gives the reader a well written story that will keep the readers attention. What I liked about this story was that it is complete with a satisfying ending where you find this author covers the story very well. I will say that I did have a few questions about a couple of the characters in the way the storyline was presented but it all turned out OK for me in the end. Be ready for a enjoyably captivating well told story with lots of 'trials, tribulations, depth, passion, secrets, mistrust, steamy sex scenes, love and compassion.' The reader will definitely be left feeling this novel was one of those stories that had a full range of emotions.

Thank you to the author for the gift of your read and my giving you a honest review of your novel.

Holy only, this was a marathon book. I'm usually more of a 5K, occasionally a 10K book reader, but this one was like running 26.2 when I've only trained for less than one quarter of that.

Please don't get me wrong... I loved most everything about this book, from the characters to the plot. The second-chance romance thing is my favorite sub-genre in romance, and this one seems to get most everything right.

I can't gush enough at the lack of Texas stereotypes in the book, which is set in and around the Austin area. I can always tell when authors are from here, and I love reading their work. I wish more people would write realistic portrayals of Texas life.

I also loved the fact that the second half of the book centered around characters that were older, proving that romance doesn't have to be a new adult/twenties theme.

Were there some unnecessary details in the book? Yep, there sure we're, but nothing felt draggy or completely tedious as I was reading it. It just took forever. I'm normally a pretty fast reader. When over the course of an hour, I only had about 5% of the book read, and it wasn't moving as fast as I wanted, I got a little frustrated.

But I did enjoy it. For a first novel, I'm impressed. I would have really liked an epilogue, but the way it ended was nice. I can't wait to read more from this author.

A great book about first love!

This is my first time reading a book by this author, and it won't be the last! This is a great epic love story about first love that transcends time, angst, doubts and uncertainties! Imagine the years in between the past twenty three years, can anyone endure the pains of heartaches, the bitterness and wishing of what might have been said or done to change the events of your life? I admire the the exceptional talent of this author, she successfully created a GREAT book about SECOND CHANCES that's quite believable it could happen in real life! My great admiration of Jake is phenomenal! Nicole, too is fantastic in her role as a 17year old virgin, too much in love, but her heart wrenching disappointments has led her towards a fruitful family life while still loving Jake! They were meant for each other, they could not escape their own destiny! I wish there's an Epilogue or a continuation of this exceptional book!

WOW!!! I just have to take a few moments as my thoughts are ping-ponging on how to describe my state after reading this book. My first reaction was ... Dang, is this actually the last page I turning?

I was approached by Ms Hammond's assistant to review this book and truthfully the cover led me to think... A sweet contemporary novel boy, girl and an HEA. Ok no worries it will be light and fun.

HELLO!!! FAR FROM IT!! And I know that the words I write here still will not fully express my true experience in reading "Unfinished".
It is truly a wonderful must!

I began reading and then realized I totally misjudged the complexity and fullness of a fantastic woven, layered story. We are introduced to a sweet sassy h, Nicole and a wrong-side-a-the-tracks H, Jake who fall in love over summer. The story opens letting you know you're 23 years ahead and then we cast back to the beginning when a damaged boy meets the accepting ray of 'Sunshine' who turns his world around and for her this angsty guy is her first love. The build is so well done and the structure keeps your emotions climbing and although they find each other again physically, they have so much healing and letting go to reach each other emotionally.

This is one well written book of the lives of two well-rounded, believable characters, right down to the fact that this "sweet contemporary story" was actually a full blown, messy, real-to-actual-life believable, no holes barred, sensual, knock your socks off journey that traversed 23 years of what ifs, horrible childhood experiences, coming of age, and finally healing. I got so caught up in this story that knowing how the characters looked, if the H was sexy and the h had attitude, was so not the priority. The spicy bits were very welcome but they fell so naturally in the story they were part of it rather that the hook to catch the reader, as in some books. The storyline has layers and layers married with the paint style of the h, Nicole, whose work was referenced throughout the flow as milestones in their journey.

My thoughts are totally my own, and my only issues are, that the cover does not do the words justice as it seems frivolous compared to the depth inside. The price I must say is a giveaway as I have seen and read books that are much more expensive and are so airy and flat in comparison.
Ms Hammond I am so grateful to Joann for contacting me and sharing your fantastic book with me and I am so enamored with it. It is on the top shelf of my library and I am now concreted as a fan of your work.
Gifts are so rare and for us readers who appreciate a really good story that is realistic and has so many messages and morals within (and o don't forget a bit of sauce and spice too

I’ve just found a new favorite author!

Unfinished is what I would call an “epic” romance book. It spans over 20 years but doesn’t go into minute detail about all of them. This is a fabulous second chance story. At times I laughed and other times I cried. As is always the case for me I have a hard time reviewing books that I really love and this one falls into that category. I never know what I can say to make other readers want to read a book that I’ve loved. I can’t believe that this is Ms. Hammond’s first novel.

Nicole and Jake meet the summer after Nicole graduates from high school. The first part of the book is about their time together, 23 years ago, while Jake works for her father. Jake has had a rough time of it as a kid and Nicole’s brother helped him out. Nicole’s mother died recently and she’s still having trouble coming to terms with that.

Jake isn’t the typical “bad boy” that I’ve been seeing in a lot of books lately. His youth was troubled but he has done everything he can to overcome those problems. Even so, he feels that he is no good for Nicole but she doesn’t agree. At the end of the summer things go wrong.

The second part of the book deals with the present time. If you read the book blurb you know that they’ve been apart during the 23 years and this second part begins the story of how they find their way back to each other.

Once I started reading this book I couldn’t put it down. It’s a long book for me as I tend to favor books that I can finish more quickly; Amazon says it’s 481 printed pages and I believe it. I spent absolutely all afternoon and evening reading it and I didn’t want it to end.

Nicole and Jake seemed like real people to me with struggles that real people might have. I was approached by Ms. Hammond’s assistant to read this book and a copy was gifted to me through Amazon. It’s the type of book that I would easily have purchased on my own if I knew about it but I didn’t. I’m so glad that I was given the opportunity to read this book.

Bravo Ms. Hammond; Unfinished is a wonderful story and I look forward to reading more of your work.

Unfinished: A First Love, Second Chance Romance, is the first novel published by Susan Hammond. I was approached by her assistant to review Susan’s book, and I must say, I am incredibly grateful that I was asked. I might not have picked the book up on my own, but now that I have read it, I can’t wait for the next book by this amazing author.

The back of the book gives you a wonderful insight into what you will be reading, so I am not going to repeat what you can read there, but what I will say is you will not want to put the book down once you start it. It is beautifully written with amazing understanding of the characters lives as they go through this journey, not always physically together but emotionally tied to one another.

The story begins with Nicole, visiting the childhood home that she and her brother are selling. She thinks back twenty three years to the beginning of her relationship with Jake, her first love and the man she thought was her world, but things didn’t work out how she thought they would and they were torn apart. Then fast forward to now and the story when their lives intersect again. You will experience every emotion as you read about their love, loss and finding their way back to each other, their second chance. I laughed, cried and was enthralled with the rich story Susan wrote.

Susan’s writing is enchanting to read and hard to put down. Her descriptions of Nicole and her art and Jake and his struggles and successes, are so well written that you will feel as if you have known the characters throughout their lives and were there with them as they went through everything you read. You will root for them as they go through difficult times and smile when they are experiencing what they should have experienced when they were younger.

If you want to do something nice for yourself, pick up a copy of this book. You will not be disappointed and you will be greatly enriched by the reading this book.

Honest review for free copy
Jake and Nichole met when they were 20 and 18. Jake grew up in a trailer with an abusive father and a passive mother. Nichole grew up in a house of love and financial comfort. The summer they met, Jake was working for Nichole's father at the marina and staying in the family boathouse/apartment. Although they fell in love, Jake would never admit it. The time they spent together was filled with laughter, conversation and some heavy-duty kisses, but, much to Nichole's chagrin, Nichole remained a virgin. Jake left at the end of the summer with both of the them promising to meet up again at the boathouse in 21 months. There was no explanation as to the timeline, Nichole just accepted it.
Jake and Nichole both ended up in Austin for college. They never saw each other, but one day shortly before their time apart was up, Nichole saw an insert for the local college graduation. Jake was listed as a double honors student. Nichole went to watch the ceremony and to congratulate Jake when she saw him celebrating with another woman. Nichole decided not to meet Jake on Memorial Day at the boathouse and went on with her life.
Over 20 years passed when they met again. During that time, Nichole had married her dear friend, but not the love of her passion, Michael and they had twins. The twins grew up and went to college and Michael asked for a divorce. He had always known he took 2nd place in Nichole's heart and wanted a chance to find a lover who would love him back, fully.
Because of Jake's upbringing, he had a very difficult time trusting people and this included Nichole. Their 2nd chance was filled with misunderstandings and lack of trust. Would they be able to work things out and get their 2nd chance at happiness?
This was a "new-to-me" author, and although I found the book to be a little "angsty" and a tad long, I would certainly read her again.

Unfinished....

I was asked for an honest opinion on this book. Wow! Though this was a really long book, it was very good. I got so into the story, I wanted to know what happened next. I still have questions, lol.....

It starts with Jake and Nicole. Jake grew up in a trailer park with his parents and sister. Life was not great for Jake. His father as not a good man. He would mentally, physically and sexually abuse his mother. Jake look out for his younger sister the best he could. Eventually once older, he was able to take control, well as best he could as a teenager. (Don't want to spoil with to many details). Nicole on the other hand grew up in a loving family with parents and an older brother Rob by 8 years. But their mom died of cancer when Nicole was 16.

Needless to say Rob is the person that connects Jake and Nicole together but he doesn't know that until some 23 years later. Jake gets in a little trouble, Rob in law school but works with a program called Choices, that ends up saving Jakes life. Once Jake explains his circumstances Rob gets him a summer job with his Dad's company as a mechanic and allows his to stay in the boathouse apartment on property for the Summer. Nicole was an artist like her mother and was going out to her favorite spot to paint and she meets Jake, where it all begins.
They fall in Love over the summer and promises to meet up 2 1/2 years later. Jake need that time to work on the issues with his sister and she was leaving for College. Sorry to say things happen and they do not meet up until 23 years later.

This was a very good book, really intense, a little long but worth the read. Did Jake ever meet her children? Did they have children? How did life as a couple turn out? Just curious.. Thank you for the great read. LOVED IT!

Unfinished: A First Love, Second Chance Romance by Susan Hammond. It is a really good book and hard to put down. However, it does seem to be never ending. Just when you think it is ending, it goes off in another direction. This makes it really interesting.
Nicole Chandler’s mother was an artist and Nicole followed in her footsteps. She would take her easel and supplies down to the boathouse where her Mother had painted and paint for hours during the summer mornings. One summer morning as she was getting ready to paint, she was interrupted by a very handsome young man coming out of the boathouse. She found out that Jake Evans had been hired by her Father for the summer and given the boathouse for his summer home. Rather than running Nicole off, Jake encouraged her to continue to use the boathouse deck to get her painting done. After all, he was gone all day. Thus began a romance between a rich young girl and a dirt poor young man. Neither paid attention to the other’s economic or social class, they just saw each other and fell in love. No one else knew of their romance. At the end of the summer, Jake turned her loose because he knew he would be tied up the next two years and didn’t want to tie her down. He couldn’t tell her what he would be doing. They did make arrangements to meet at the boathouse in two years. However, Nicole saw him with a pretty young girl and didn’t show up.
Now, twenty-three years later, they meet again. Both had gone through divorces so were once again single. Are they getting a second chance at love or are they so bitter with each other that they will turn into enemies? Nicole had painted a painting she called “Unfinished” which represented her life with Jake years ago. Now could she do another one which finished their life stories?

Despite starting off a little on the slow side, this story ended up packing quite the emotional punch.

Nicole and Jake meet the summer before Nicole goes to college. Jake is a few years older, and already has a fair amount of mysterious baggage he’s dragging around. He believes he’s not good enough for sweet Nicole and does all he can to push her away – or at least keep her at arm’s length. But she sees who he really is and wants to be with him. At the end of their summer together, they decide to go their separate ways but plan to meet back at their special place in 22 months.

Then the book starts to get good! And also frustrating. Because this is one of those all-too-frequent times in new adult books where you just want to scream at the heroine “JUST GO TALK TO HIM YOU BIG PANSY!” But if Nicole had done that, it would’ve been a short book.

So we fast forward over twenty years. Nicole has moved on, has a family. Jake has moved on, is finally successful. But now they have a chance to be together. And things still aren’t easy. There’s angst, misunderstandings galore, twenty-plus years of baggage, and you still want to scream “JUST TALK WITH EACH OTHER!”

I’m not usually a fan of over-the-top angst, and this book almost had that. But where it got me was the back story, and how Jake and his sister were able to overcome their horrendous upbringing. You begin to understand why Jake did the things he did, how that caused him to think and behave the way he did, and you’re drawn into the story and begin to love and forgive Jake right along with Nicole.

It was a long and bumpy road to this happily ever after, and thank goodness it finally got there. But what a good read it was on the way to arriving at the final page!

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

This was a wonderful story of first love and second chances. I loved Jake and Nicole. A summer spent in their youths learning and loving about one another and life. They both came from very different worlds. Nicole came from a very privileged family, but had experienced her own share of grief and loss. I thought she was a wonderful heroine, that you were easily pulling for. She was sweet, a little naive, but also determined about the things she wanted in life. Jake, on the other hand was a young man running, trying to escape his past, or better yet not let it define him. He had so much bottled up inside him, but watching him fall for Nicole that summer was beautiful and intense.

Without giving spoilers away, the next time these two see one another is 23 years later. Their past has changed them, defined them in new ways, but it is apparent that the attraction, and dare I sat, love is still very much there. I think what I loved most about this book was that this wasn't one of those typical second chance books, where they just fall instantly back together with no issues. Their are trials and tribulations, trusts that are trying to be earned. It was real, I loved that. I loved this story, the connection between Jake and Nicole, everything came together in a really sexy, beautiful endearing way.

Ms. Hammond has done a great job with her first book. I will be anticipating what she has in store for us next!

I really enjoyed this book. A great story line, characters were very well developed, great detail given to the nuances of their lives that gave them depth, passion, love and compassion to see them get back to one another. Love is word that is so much stronger than the simple I Love you- when true love connects a couple it is enormous, life altering and undeniable. These characters had that. Nicole and Jake meet during a summer he works at her father's marina. She is 17-getting ready to turn 18 and he is 20 and their chemistry/connection just was written beautifully and felt genuine and forever from the get go. Secrets or withheld truths hurt - damage- alter the lives of the couple- but was it wrong or meant to be. Reconnecting 20+ years later, at a new phase in life, will Nicole and Jake rekindle what their experienced that one short summer, or was it simply that- a short, brief romance.

I truly loved reading their story. This book doesn't make you wonder what happened next between the couple because it's so thoroughly covered; however, I felt the book went in to detail too much on unnecessary things and failed to cover a couple major issues. Without giving anything away, that would be been the interaction with the "couple" and Rob and most importantly the "couple" with Sara and Wes, especially after how careful it was written with meeting Michael and Lori.

Overall, this was a great book- I highly recommend this second chance romance.

Young Nicole and her crush on the handsome Jake. Jake, the boy from outside her circle. He's staying in her dad's boathouse for the summer. They become friends and innocent love begins. So innocent it's refreshing in this story. Their friendship grows and then misunderstandings create a severe break between them. Twenty years later their paths cross and what began twenty years ago still is in their hearts but that miscommunication again! Finally with both not afraid they take the steps that they need to have that everlasting love.
I was approached by Susan Hammond's assistant to give a review. I responded, no problem. Yikes! I realized it's over 400 pages long and with the holidays approaching, I'll never get through this. wrong! Once I started I couldn't put it down. Susan draws you into their world. Most of all its so realistic that you keep wondering, yes I could relate to Nicole and Jake's dilemmas. "What if" I done things differently in my life. It's a great story!! I hope there is a second book with another heartwarming story between new characters and includes Nicole and Jake. I would like to hear how their lives are growing with her children.
Bravo Susan for your first novel!

Wow!

I will be honest, I wasn't sure i like this book.. But it blew me away. Nicole and Jake's story is heartbreakingly, beautiful.. We meet Nicole, she comes from a loving home.. Her mother died, but she had her father and brother to help her through.. The summer she turns 17, she meets the gorgeous Jake and instantly feels an instant connection to him.. But Jake has had a different kind of upbringing, he has been through what no child should ever go through.. He tries to keep her at arms length, to protect them both from his secrets, but he finds himself falling for this beautiful girl.. Life, secrets and a misunderstanding keep them apart.. But they're never away from each other's thoughts...
I cried so hard for Nicole and Jake (ok it was full on, ugly crying, like sobbing my heart out), I prayed they would find each other again... There story is such and amazing journey, that has you laughing, crying, frustrated, smiling, heartbroken and so extremely happy... I can't believe this is Susan Hammond first novel and I can't recommend this book highly enough!!

I Don't Think She Deserved Any Chances...spoliers

While the writing was good, I couldn't get behind Nicole. She made a very juvenile decision at least 2 crucial times in the novel. The first one separated them for over 20 years and I would have rather he moved on and found happiness elsewhere as he had so little of it early on. She basically marries a guy because she gets pregnant, lives a pretty content life, they divorce just out of the blue and she assumes that Jake should have pined for her - which he did in a way. She was also running and I have no reason why. She didn't seem to be worth the effort and this might sound harsh but if she made a couple of messed up mistakes that changed the course of someone's life like she did Jake she doesn't deserve a second chance with him. I was disappointed that the synopsis said Jake fought it, when they reconnected but he did not fight it one little bit. The writing was good, no noticeable errors. I didn't like the story line and Jake needed more development as a forty something than he received. 2.5

Agggggh! These two (Jake and Nicole) want to make me scream! There lives, are so filled with every emotion a person and relationship could have from A-Z! They are such complete opposites yet so perfect for each other that they excuse me for saying, Are Completely Stupid! Each has there own emotional baggage, their own history's and it's that baggage is what they keep tripping over.

I don't want to go into a lot of detail, because those details you learn about as you read more and more are what keep you entranced in their story... the story of who they were, who they are, and who they become (haha not giving anything away) or could become... IF, IF, IF, they can only learn to communicate!

For the love of all things good and bad... this book, their story, will keep you on edge and at times wanting to scream and smack someone upside the back of his/her head.

Definitely a MUST read for anyone who Loves Romance, First Loves, And Believes in Second Chances.

A wonderful story full of love and forgiveness. I could not believe this is Susan Hammond's first book when I first found out. Its wonderfully written and engaging. I was so caught up in the story that I forgot to eat lunch. I had a hard time putting the book down to go back to work. Nicole is sunshine and sweetness, Jake is a man with a troubled past and very self-conscious about it. She forgives him for his mistakes but can he forgive himself? I felt like I was watching this story like a movie in my head. I laughed and cried with the characters. I am giving this one a glowing recommendation. Susan Hammond is now on my favorite authors list and i cant wait to see what she writes next.

I was given this e-book by the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. My conclusions are my own. I was not compensated in any way

I received a copy for my honest review.
Phew I have to tell you, I'm completely spent!
Long time since I've had a book take me through so many different emotions... Anger, hopelessness, happiness, joy, devastation, love!
This is a love story of epic proportions! It lasts during a really long period of time and a lot of things happen during the years. Some things are still left unanswered at the end but all in all you get most of the answers you're looking for. My favorite character is the best friend Beca. She is hilarious! The kind of friend everybody needs. I love that it's a real book, with real problems and misunderstandings and real villains and real human emotion.
I would definitely recommend this book, but make sure you have enough time because putting it down is not an option. Oh and bring a handkerchief...

WOW!! What an amazing emotional read this one is. A story of young love, misunderstandings, lost opportunities, and a beautiful reunification. This is the perfect story of meeting the person at makes up the other part of your heart at the wrong time in your life. Thankfully for Jake and Nicole, they get a second chance even if it does take 20 years. If they can see beyond past hurts, secrets, and misunderstandings a bright future awaits. That's sometimes easier said than done.

I highly recommend this one.

Enjoyable book

Jake will take you on an emotional roller coaster. His life was not story book material but he let it rule so much of his life. Nicole was young and just spreading her wings. That summer was a beautiful courtship. She planned to wait. He hoped she would. Yet a misunderstanding changed everything. It took 23 years to start the process. There had to be no more secrets. Love was not going to be enough. Trust has to be prominent. Loved the ending.

This was a fabulous book! It took me on a roller coaster of emotions as Nicole and Jake's story unfolded. I was excited, happy, sad, heartbroken, anxious and elated----a true range of emotions. Second chance romances are one of my favorite genres and Susan Hammond took me on the perfect journey that spanned over 20 years. While it was a long book, the writing and detail were perfectly executed. For a first novel, Hammond knocked it out of the park and made an instant fan in me.

A love story with so many twists and turns

The story made me happy, sad, irritated, and awed! Jake and Nicole don't always get it right the first time. But with best of intentions they try. Life happens and this story makes your heart melt for them. I had so many couldn't put it down moments and then plenty of moments of self reflection. This book is original and definitely won't be on that is forgotten. A must read!!

Where to begin.

This book was a roller coaster ride of emotions. I was in tears, I was yelling and I was cheering. It seemed to move slow in the beginning and is a long book, but after finishing the book I understand how all the pieces needed to be in place. Jake and Nicole's story was big and messy and I loved the whole thing.
