For reasons unknown, Seb is constantly drawn to random places without meaning, following an instinct he doesn't understand.
One night that instinct lands him in trouble when he encounters Sarah, a young woman hunted by a fiend that can only be described as the stuff of nightmares. Against his better judgement Seb attempts to intervene, only to nearly get himself killed in the process. Before she passes, Sarah transfers something to him, an arcane knowledge that gets buried deep into his subconscious.
Rescued by the Brotherhood warrior Cade, Seb's life takes on an unexpected turn when he is told he is a Latent, able to manipulate the very energies of reality to his own devices. He is brought into a world within our own where the Magistry and its allies engage with the demonic Sheol in a timeless conflict that has traversed entire universes.
A world where he, and he alone, carries the message that could change the course of the conflict forever.
I hail from the North West of the UK, a place beyond the Wall where the Wildlings are scared and even the White Walkers fear to tread as it's too darn cold and miserable...
I've been writing on and off for years, with Coma Companion being the first of my works to finally find someone who liked it enough to select it for their publication (thanks Dark Fire Fiction!). Early novel-length efforts will remain forever consigned to my digital drawer, and it was only with the Auran Chronicles did I finally feel I'd found something worthy of sharing with the world.
Books 1 and 2 of the Auran Chronicles are out now, with book 3 scheduled for later this year.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Yep that's right! This is a five star book easily!
Seb is introduced into a world he never thought existed when he is drawn to a place. He seems to be drawn to many places. The most recent place he was drawn to changed his life forever. He never thought that he would find this much out about the world, let alone himself. He doesn't know how to handle it at first, but then things take a huge change when he learns to control an unexpected power that he can channel.
I was caught up in this book. This book has so much action, that I found myself fighting sleep night after night as I read on. When I gave in to going to bed I found myself thinking about the book, and wondering what would happen next. I fell asleep thinking about the book, and woke up thinking that I couldn't wait till the time came when I could pick up the book again, after other life issues were taken care of course. It is not often that this happens with a book. Only a book that I am so thrilled to read could cause this reaction out of me. I also found myself talking to my boyfriend about the book. He is not a reader, but still humored me, because he knows that reading makes me happy. I happy to declare this book as a favorite of mine.
If you are looking for an action packed book that is high fantasy, and has a good load of paranormal excitement thrown in then give this book a shot, because chances are you will not regret reading this one. That is how thrilling this book is. Do not miss out!
Grim, unforgiving and intense. These are three words that describe this book best as far as I'm concerned. The vivid descriptions kept me awake all night, but the hope in the characters reminded me that dawn would never be too far away.
Seb is simply drawn to a seemingly random place. This time, he has not much time to look around, because soon after, he mets woman in trouble. Something is haunting her and a few moments later, he sees what it is. A big daemon is coming for this woman, Seb has no choice and tries to help her, it doesn´t matter why is that thing trying to kill her. This situation escalates in fast action for his own survival. Seb receives some kind of secret message from the woman to be hidden in his mind just before she dies. After that, he himself almost dies, but this is only the begining of story. What Seb experiences after he finally open his eyes again, is beyond his imagination…
I can´t wait to say: I like first book of Auran chronicles. It´s very well written. But, I don´t mean it rude – I had some issues during the reading. The biggest part of this book is full of explanations. Explanations´ everywhere. Ok, I agree that Seb needs to know what is happening to him, who are the strange people close to him, what are his possibilities and of course – what is hidden in his mind. There were some really nice wow moments, yes. But probably, I am the type of reader who likes action and shocking moments arranged in the right places in story like little presents awaiting to surprise for the real engagement into the story. Of course, that they were there, but i felt they were in the very end, so probably – this was the main reason why I couldn´t finish this book faster. However - I can see the need to describe everything important for the outcoming sequel – and do you want to know something? I want to read it, definitely, no doubt. And just one other little note – please – word „shit“ shouldn´t be everywhere, OH MY DOG. Thank you.
This book is not bad at all! For sure it´s really good. It contains a plenty of good ideas of new magic systems, pretty interesting descriptions of how it all works – that interested me. Despite I saw many concepts from other common, and not that common stories from fantasy genre in Message bearer, how author was able to work with his own world and imagination was really amazing. (I mean, don´t take it as accusation of copying other authors, Mr. Dobing, you did an excellent job, don´t pay attention to my sick thoughts.)
One little personal story behind reading: My big fault about the story was incorrect pronunciation of name Cian. Now, thanks God, I know, how to pronounce it correctly. Strange Celtic names. Why it couldn´t be Baloran or something?
Message bearer is a fresh story from our world, set in UK, full of original concepts of magic, dark creatures and brave characters.
Read the teaser and became intrigued. Took me a little bit to understand what was happening at first. Then I got hooked. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
An intriguing read, quite complex. Few characters were black and white, which was all to the good, but the new world Seb found himself in seemed rather bleak despite its magic.
The most impressive thing about this book is the rich mythology. Note: There could be some minor spoilers to follow about the setting but I will not reveal the plot or explain the terms I use. After the exciting, intriguing opening, you get hints of the depth behind the unfolding narrative. The shadow creatures possessing people are Sheol, the trained warriors battling them are the Brotherhood and others, they are using their "sense" to interact with The Weave and challenge the "Consensus". You get hints about the Aware, Latents, the Unaware, the Observers. Magi and Runic Script. It was immediately obvious that the author had a fully realized mythology for the reader to uncover through the plot. The real-world setting is northern England, which is wonderful because most UK-set urban fantasy takes place in London and this was a refreshing change. But there is an entire universe behind this one, and in fact there are multiple universes with a rich history and the vast scope and ambition is pretty astonishing. The impressive thing is that everything fits together perfectly.
Our route into this world is Seb, a young guy with a latent gift who may or may not learn to use his power and his is the classic hero's journey. But this is a multi character narrative and we get interwoven chapters from the perspective of Caleb, Sylph, Cade and Marek who each have their own roles, objectives and secrets. It's unclear at times who are the good guys and who you should be cheering on.
Another thing I really liked was the action. It was all really well described, not too long or too short and it was exciting and very visual. I am left with a lot of great images from the story and I feel like most of them are from the action scenes. There is magic combined with hand to hand combat, throwing knifes, gun fights and all kinds of awesome mental abilities.
All in all a good book and I can't wait for the next in the series.
Looks like the start if an awesome new series. Forgot to look if this was first book and or self published but it sends to be. So take those things into account and I read it for free on kindle unlimited I give barely 3 stars at the start but it's full 5 stars at the end and I can't wait to read the next book to see how the story spins and what betrayals happen or the consequences if their actions and how they will play out as they have changed reality from that point on. Their are the typically editing and grammatical mistakes that that you see in every first novel, self published or indi published which is fine as long as the b book still flows so you can read it an enjoy and you easily can. If you can't still to your 7 to 13 dollar New York Times bests sellers lists books where you have teams of professional editors making sure things are perfect and they are still human and miss stuff.
Please read these style books for the enjoyment of immersinsing yourself in the daydream the story creates, not looking for reasons to tear the heart and soul of of someone's written work apart until you can at least publish an equal length contemporary work.
Boy meets girl, girl is killed by demon, boy discovers he’s a wizard and is trained by secret demon hunters.
The protagonist, Seb, is nearly killed when he tries to save a woman from a demonic creature from another dimension. She dies but inserts what could be a highly important message in his brain. Naturally, the bad guys now want to capture Seb. Luckily for him, he’s picked up by the other side instead, and they decide to train him in magic so they can retrieve the message.
What could be a thoroughly cliche plot is lifted by a good dose of skulduggery: the bad guys are bad, but there aren’t any straightforwardly ‘good’ guys. From an engaging opening, the story romps along with plenty of action. Possibly too much action, because I was getting a bit bored of fight scenes and was glad of the break when magic training started. Indeed, I would have been happy to have more of that, since the magic system is quite original and interesting.
Very readable writing with few editing errors. Expect lots of violence and gore. No romance.
Hooked. This book pulls you in and you keep wanting more. The characters are developed very well, you see them change, and their decision making along with it. World building is fantastic, some of this is a little more fantasy than I usually go for, but Dobing does an excellent job describing the sights, sounds, and eve en smells of what's going on. I'm from the US so some of the editing/spelling seems a little off at times, but nothing that breaks you from the scene. I just loved how the whole story was laid out. Too many times books seem to give you more and more questions, and then try to resolve everything in the last ten pages (usually poorly, like their deadline ran out). Dobing did a great job of providing answers along the way that help the readed come up with better questions. Can't wait until the next book!
A refreshing take on Urban Fantasy, very likeable and believable characters. Gritty storyline drawing you into Sebs world, I could see myself living in a world such as this and thriving. I loved New take on Magic and it's effect on us, it reminded me of Stephen Donaldson work. I can't wait for the sequel. Fab
I can't wait for the next installment of this series! Very well written, with depth, great plot and character development. Very rare find in this genre these days.
If you're a fan of urban fantasy, this is a book you're definitely going to enjoy! I'm glad I had the chance to come across this book and looking forward to reading Book 2.
