Author-photographer David Darcy presents a stunning collection of portraits depicting war, childhood, love and life in the in the lucky country. In his years of travelling the length and breadth of Australia, David Darcy has met many an old timer with a story to share - childhood memories of a very different Australia, and stories from a lifestyle that is fast disappearing as Australia changes and takes its place in the modern world.
Here David Darcy is on the road again, traversing the continent in search of a good yarn and an interesting face. Through candid portraits and poignant, intimate conversations with men and women from all walks of Australian life, he captures recollections of childhood memories, a life lived on the land, in the cities, on the shores of this great dry continent - stories from a disappearing world.
David Darcy came to Tamworth Library for an author talk, he showed photos and told the audience how he got people to tell him their stories. It was a very interesting talk and this "Old Timers" book is just beautiful with gorgeous photos and stories from all over Australia. This talented photographer has taken up painting in the last year and a half or so, and I wish him all the best in the 2018 Archibald Prize.
Loved loved loved this book, and have given it as a gift many times. So many beautiful interesting down to earth characters- not celebrities or over achievers , just wonderful people. I often reread this when feeling overwhelmed with modern life
Records fabulous interviews from people from up to 100 years ago. Very informative. Should be read by everyone to help all of us understand how life was not so long ago.
I thought this book was really endearing. Sometimes happy, funny, and sad. Mixed emotions of the elderly generations childhood and early life. I recommend this read to all ages.
