PBS fitness personality on Classical Stretch and creator of the fitness phenomenon Essentrics, Miranda Esmonde-White offers an eye-opening guide to anti-aging that provides essential tools to help anyone turn back the clock and look and feel younger no matter what age.
Miranda Esmonde-White trains everyone from prima ballerinas to professional hockey players to Cerebral palsy patients: what do they all have in common? All of these people are hoping to heal their bodies, prevent further injury, and move optimally and without pain. In fact, they have the same goals as any of us who are trying to stay young, fit, and reverse the hands of time.
Because the aging of our bodies occurs in our cells, it must be repaired there too—that’s where Miranda’s highly effective and sought-after techniques come in. The body is programmed to self-destruct as we age, but the speed at which it self-destructs is up to us. Recent scientific studies have proven this fact! In Aging Backwards, Miranda offers a groundbreaking guide on how to maintain and repair our cells, through scientifically designed workouts.
Healthy cells prevent joint pain, muscle loss and weak bones—helping to control weight, increase energy, and improve strength and mobility. Miranda offers readers of all ages the tools they need to look and feel young. Complete with tips, tools, and her Eight Basic Age-Reversing Workouts accompanied by instructional photos and web clips, Aging Backwards will help you grow younger, not older!
AGING BACKWARDS presents great information on the benefits of exercise, mainly stretching to stay flexible.
I found two points particularly encouraging: (1) you don't have to burnout on strenuous aerobics to stay fit; and (2) strength training (building muscle and strengthening bones/joints) can be achieved by lengthening the muscles (stretching).
The last part of the book goes through many, many exercises to address different fitness goals with pictures. Personally, it's easier for me to watch a fitness video and follow along. I use several yoga and Pilates DVDs, and I noticed that several of the Aging Backwards exercises were similar to what I'm already doing.
Bottom line of AGING BACKWARDS: Maintaining strong, flexible muscles is the key to staying fit for life, and that can be achieved with 30 minutes of gentle daily exercises explained in the book. Makes sense & is worth a try!
Second time reading this. I appreciated it more this time around.
Pros This book serves as good motivation to do her program more often. It’s a lovely program for balance, flexibility, mobility, and stress relief.
Cons I vehemently disagree with her when it comes to avoiding weights/strength training, but one is never going to agree with anyone on everything, so that’s fine.
Final Thoughts The book is not essential, but certainly motivating and informative for those who wish to learn more about the mindset and theory behind her program. The DVDs/streaming programs are what’s really needed.
This book came into my life at the perfect time! I was frustrated with my lack of motivation to exercise, and diminishing capabilities that fed my laziness.
The author conveys common sense applications and methodologies to allow everyone at any age and fitness level to keep limber. I wish I had this knowledge to integrate into my sports routines and all those fun activities, which later resulted in injuries and worn out muscles and joints.
She has created a unique and one-of-a-kind system to better health without "the pain, no gain" attitude. This will stop people from abusing their bodies with repetitive training and instead learn ways to utilize all the muscles in their body by stretching and moving in gentle relaxed ways. An essential element to incorporate into any fitness routine. She is well ahead of her peers in creating a formula that shows us how to give our body what it truly craves.
This is a must read for anyone at any level of activity!
Walking is my exercise of choice, and when I can't get outside I have used Leslie Sansone's walking videos. After about 15 years, I am ready for a change. As I am moving into my 60s, I can tell I need more flexibility and less repetitive motion with the hand weights. Not being naturally athletic--- preferring a book and a chair--- I need motivation and a fresh routine. I am pretty sure the Esmonde technique, as described in this book, will serve me well for the next phase of life. The technique entails graceful, fluid stretching motions and purports to lengthen and challenge all muscle groups. No weights or special equipment are necessary, except a chair. The movements are reminiscent of ballet moves and perhaps a touch of tai chi; postures are never held static as in yoga.
The book really goes into muscle physiology on beyond my level of interest. I read it all anyway because I knew it was good for me to understand how aging affects the body. I do believe the understanding of mitochondria and the benefits of lengthening muscles via stretching has increased my motivation to embark on a new system of exercise.
The basic exercises are pictured and described in detail in the last few chapters of the book, but I have found the YouTube introductory lessons more helpful in getting started. I have been at it about 3 weeks and am at the point now where I think I will order some of the many DVDs that are available so as to have more complete and challenging routines.
Apparently, the aging backwards routines are shown on PBS. You can also obtain a subscription for streaming for about $15 a month, or purchase any number of videos. Some are called "Classical Stretch" and another series called "Essentrics." Miranda Esmonde-White does some of them, and her daughter does others.
I am encouraged that the routines are do-able--- however they are NOT easy! I definitely feel the heat. Am glad for expertise in this area of life because I need it!
Don't get me wrong, I like Miranda Esmonde-Whites fitness routines. The stretching feels good and it is, at times, harder than it looks. My chronic shoulder pain vanished--almost literally overnight-- since I started doing her little workouts.
But this is a review of the book.
The book is one big informercial for her DVDs, which really are good, but I don't truly believe all the marvelous claims these workouts can do. It's like Windex on the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," if you're familiar with that movie Windex could cure every problem. The same here, it seems, with White's routines. They can help tremendously, especially for those who suffer from various aches and pains and injuries, but it can't do it all. For example, I am not convinced about the weight loss claim. I am sure moving and stretching help start one's fitness motivation but you won't lose 30 pounds just by stretching for 20 minutes twice a week. I also cannot stand the claim of "reverse aging" or "aging backward." That's really marketing at work. No one reverses aging but rather one delays or alleviates the effects of aging, but old we are destined to get. The book only makes the journey less unpleasant. So on some aspects, I remain skeptical for now.
Borrow this book from the library and then try a couple of sample workouts on youtube.com and see if you like it. This is what I did. I ended up returning the book to the library and purchasing her Season 10 DVD used on A'zon.
All I can say is...if you suffer from low back pain - especially sciatica...go directly to page 200 and begin the exercises shown there. Instant relief. This book is the real deal. Highly recommend.
I stumbled across Miranda Esmonde-White on PBS one evening...and I followed along with her doing some of the stretching exercises she was demonstrating. I immediately sensed some positive benefit and after doing a bit of my own research on her and her methodology I decided to order the book and a couple related DVD's. Her book is basically divided into 2 sections. The first half explains in detail without being overly technical, what positive physiological effects occur in our bodies when we engage all of the muscles on a daily basis. They consist of better calorie burning, pain relief, more mobility, more strength and energy as opposed to the opposite of aging prematurely through cell death and atrophy, stiffness and pain. All of the information appears factual and I felt she was not making outlandish claims or giving unattainable expectations. The second half is filled with the stretching exercises that are a combination of Tai chi exercises and ballet stretching exercises which she learned as a ballet dancer. The books works well with the DVD's as you can see in detail how she transitions through a set of exercises targeted for a specific problem like posture, mobility or pain relief. I guess the best thing out of this book is that I have religiously set aside a half hour a day for the last 4 weeks and I am exceptionally happy with the outcome. I'm losing weight which as been a major challenge most of my life along with experiencing now increased mobility, pain relief in my joints and energy boost. I am in my 66th year and I found Miranda's book and related exercise DVD's a real god send. I can't afford to waste my last years in the clutches of the medical system battling serious painful health issues and I am committed to following through with this positive and enjoyable exercise routine. The long and short of it, is this book provides a scientific explanation to the aging process and a doable plan to reverse and slow down premature aging with a variety stretching exercises. If you are skeptical, do yourself a favor and borrow it from the library.
I was given this book by a family member to help me heal my body, in particular, my back...Thank You.
"Our bodies want to move." (quote from the book)
I have always been a competitive person when it comes to sports. As I have aged, my competitiveness lessened a bit, but my eagerness to throw myself into working out has not. I have always been reluctant to stretch. I've dabbled in yoga and once took a class in Tai Chi...they were always too slow for me. But twenty-twenty-hindsight and decades later, I am paying the piper...cue the music!
"The process of disks drying out can begin in our mid-twenties, and ends in our mid-sixties, this is why back pain strikes 25-to 65-year olds most often." (quote from the book)
In September, it all came to head again. Flat on my back and in severe pain, I knew I had to change not only my workouts, but my attitude (you can teach an old dog new tricks). I signed up online with Essentrics, and I am making myself slow down in my movements and it is definitely helping!
"Movement is a natural part of all healing and should not be dismissed as optional." (quote from the book)
I found this book well laid out, informative, relatable with a dose of humor and included real life stories that helped to prove slow and steady wins the race. There are pictures showing movements to practice to get you started. Ms. Esmonde-White also states that if you are injured or in pain, first speak with your doctor or physiotherapist...do not depend on self-diagnosis. One should never work in pain.
"Doing nothing is a sin of omission rather than commission. Doing nothing is a choice to let your body decay before its time. Doing something is the choice to stay vital, healthy, and youthful." (quote from the book)
Reading this book has given me a deeper understanding of how everything is connected and how gentle exercise, especially Essentrics, help to keep the body flexible, improve balance, straighten your posture, and even helps to speed weight loss. It also is teaching me that I don't have to kill myself in order to stay fit at any age!
Aging Backwards has been a very eye opening read. Since reading the book I've purchased two sets of the exercise dvd's. Miranda Esmonde White is very knowledgeable and credible in the manner in which she explains the effects of exercise (good and bad) on our bodies. The amount or research that has gone into this book is evident. I now understand how our bodies are designed to move and also how damaging many other exercise programs have been. I will definitely keep this book as a reference.
I was introduced to Miranda Esmonde-White by my 60 yr. old parents who were thrilled to use her strengthening and stretching programs that they had recorded off of PBS. They really do feel younger.
Out of curiosity I checked out the book from my library, which gives the science behind Miranda's particular approach and includes pictures of the different exercises I would almost suggest skipping straight to whatever Essentrics or Classical Stretch DVDs you can get from your library to get right down to using your body. I now have a copy of her Season 10 Classical Stretch, which 22 minute episodes I do about four times a week. My back muscles are stronger, so I naturally sit up straighter (something I really need) and I definitely have more mobility and flexibility in my joints and muscles. Paired with walking about four times a week, I've also had half the number of migraine that I usually get in a three months period. Not so bad for a stretching/strengthening program that just feels good. I would say this program is a cross between ballet and Tai Chi.
I also really liked her daughter's (Sahra Esmonde-White) DVD at my library called Essentrics Workout: Class of 2012 which was geared a little more to the younger crowd. This will be the next one I buy.
Can You Age Backwards? It’s never too late to slow down, or even reverse, the effects of aging.
It is this theory that led Miranda Esmonde-White to create Essentrics – Classical Stretch – viewed as a very powerful technique for weight loss and strengthening. Essentrics increases flexibility; rebalances joints; relieves back, knee, shoulder, hip and foot pain; and much more. Done in as little as 30 minutes a day, countless people have benefitted from this technique developed by the former National Ballet dancer.
The Esmonde technique is the foundation of Essentrics. In her new book Aging Backwards, Miranda Esmonde-White explains exactly how and why the Eccentrics approach is so powerful and how you can use it to slow down and reverse your own aging process.
The book takes you through the full cycle of understanding the aging process. Why in our forties do physical changes pop up that make us feel “old” and how to fight them head on? Aging Backwards also highlights eight age-reversing workouts.
I found the book very informative and since every time I have an X-ray done the report talks about arthritis I’m giving the exercises a try. I find it hard to exercise from illustrations in a book. So, I checked out a few of the DVDs from the library and found some videos on YouTube. She also has a show on PBS but it airs at 6 am, I’m not an early morning person and I don’t have a way to record it so that wasn’t an option. I liked the workouts well enough to subscribe to Essentrics TV. I plan on doing it daily for a few months and see if I notice a difference. I watched my mom quit moving as she aged and saw the effect that had on her. I don’t want that to happen to me. I bike and do other workouts and like adding easentrics to make sure all the muscles are getting used and improve my mobility.
If you have a body, you must read this book. No matter what age you are or what situation you're in, whether you exercise or not – even if you're an expert on exercise, athletics, or bodybuilding yourself - you must read this book and know this information. The title is misleading. It is the bible for movement and physical well-being, and it is life-changing. Exercise correctly. You don't need weights or machines. You don't even need to run. This is joyful and exhilarating, and with each workout, your body feels completely renewed. Get strong, flexible, lose weight, get rid of pain, and conquer aging. This works!!!
I love Miranda Esmonde-White's pbs show Classical Stretch. I did it everyday for 3 years and moved to PA. It's not on any pbs channel. Miss you Miranda and my aching hips are testament to my not continuing the stretching on my own.
The book is great, the exercises are even better. I had suffered from knee pain due to birth defects and since doing classical stretching I am pain free and doing things that I thought I could never do again.
I like how the first part of the book explains how our muscles work and if we don’t use them then our bodies think they are not useful and start shutting them down. Then comes the aches and pains. The second half of the book has a variety of exercises. I started doing them right away, and feel really good - especially my hands and wrists from the work I do. The exercises seem very simple and it is surprising how much t hey affect the muscles. Recommended.
Fascinating reading for someone with mitochondrial issues, which this style of working out claims to address. I am not well enough to do any full set of exercises, but can occasionally attempt a few repetitions of each set. Most of all, this book is giving me hope that I can perhaps do something to improve my health.
This book was one that a number of customers raved about. Said it was life changing! One woman who'd been in chronic pain since a crippling auto accident said it's the only reason she's walking and pain free again...
It's pretty good :o) I would 100% recommend it and am incorporating some of her practices and movements into daily life.
Stretching 30 minutes daily is the key to Esmonde-White's guide to looking ten years younger. She explains how the body's muscles function and why moving all of them is essential to longevity.
Explaining the building blocks of life, the author educates the reader on why the body's bones and vital abilities are weakened by not moving each muscle. This non-function will decrease one's life.
Following the stretching exercises, which are explained and pictured at the end of the book, the reader can start this program immediately. The reader will start working out.
My mom recommended this book to me and at first I was skeptical—maybe I’m too young? Nope. It is exactly what I need to know so I can continue to feel like I’m too young for things for the rest of my life! :) I loved the information and the research she shared as well as the practical application. I can’t stop recommending this book to friends.
I must admit that I skipped around on this one a bit. It felt a little heavy on selling her particular brand, which is always tiresome to me.
I liked her information about aging generally, posture and balance. I thought the photos were atrocious. Black and white with little idea, really, of how the motion is applied. We've tried to get the DVD at the library, just to get an idea.
It was mildly interesting for some of the information, if you read it intelligently. There are other ways to move the body that will yield anti-aging effects. This one didn't sell me that this is the only way. And for anyone who has exercised very little at this point in life, I think it would be difficult figuring out the routine using this book.
Perhaps, since she has had a television program for years, she is depending on readers going from the television show to the book, which would make it easier. However, there will always be readers like me who have never seen her show.
"We are born with DNA that gives us a vogue expiration date. But what we are not born with is the quality of that life we will have between birth and death. The quality of our lives is where free will and element of choice come in."
Miranda Esmonde-White has shown me that we have control over how rapid the process leading toward death will be. She has shown me the through regular exercise can maintain good posture, high energy, strength, and mobility. The controls rests in our choice to be sedentary or active. After reading this book, I learned more what's happening inside my body to make my age. My gratitude to Miranda for encouraging me to choose the path of greater health! Thank you so much!
I had watched Miranda Esmonde-White's PBS presentation of "Aging Backwards" several times before ordering a set of her stretching DVD's followed by this book. I learned so very much that I didn't know and several things that pertained to issues I am having too so I was very pleased with this book. She is such a wonderful educator and a great example for leading us into a healthy lifestyle! The book is not only very educational but also contains the stretches with explanation and models! I am looking forward to putting these principals to work! Great learning read!
I'm over 70, and I like these simple exercise workouts designed to strengthen my body core, lengthen muscles, improve posture and improve balance. I just read the book, but I've spent at least 30 minutes a day for the past 2 days going through many of the exercises. They definitely stretched my muscles without getting sore, so I plan to continue these workouts. First 100 pages explain how to reverse the aging process with 30 minutes a day of stretching exercies. Over 100 pages of easy to follow exercise descriptions with step-by-step photo illustrations.
2.4 The audiobook is pointless without the exhibit or a DVD. 50% of the book is telling you why you should stretch and not do any other exercises ever, and the rest is describing exercises with no diagrams. It’s pretty bold to state that your program is the only valid program, to use for a period of time and that other forms of exercises are potentially harmful. Pretty sure I won’t get the same strength or mental health benefits from this as they do from other body, weight, cardio, strength training.
The book is simply written, repetitive, and focuses at the end on the author's Essentrics technique, which is mild stretching and flexibility exercises done to maintain muscle strength and flexibility. Since I have joint issues, I took a look at the exercises on YouTube. I like the fact that the entire body is used in the routines & not just isolating one set of muscles. Whether this type of exercise will reverse aging remains to be seen, but the concept is interesting.
Interesting book. I received this through a Goodreads giveaway. The book provides an overview of aging, how to stay young and exerices to help heal, stretch, and reverse "age". The pictures/diagrams that went with each stretch. I have added a few of the stretches to my daily workout. I am unsure if this book will "age you backwards" but anything you add to your life is better than not doing anything.
A well thought out, and wonderfully put together read.
A well thought out, and wonderfully put together read. Can't wait to begin my journey into the world of aging backward too! I just may have to buy several copies to give as gifts for those who have come to me privately and in complimenting me in my posture. A former model, diver and gymnast. I've already begun practicing through my reading this book. Happily invested!
An inspiring and motivating book that I received for free through Goodreads First Reads. The workouts were helpful and the diagrams also helped to demonstrate how to do the workouts. This book was helpful in understanding how to keep us young by taking some time each day to do gentle and strengthening exercises to feel more vibrant.
