Ardent Springs #3

My One and Only

Rate this book
As far as Dr. Haleigh Rae Mitchner is concerned, Cooper Ridgeway is more suited to a superhero cape than mechanic’s overalls. It’s just like Ardent Springs’s most upstanding resident to rescue a pregnant, homeless teenager and bring her to Haleigh’s delivery room. When they team up to help the new mother and baby, Haleigh is determined not to cross the line with Cooper. Not only is he her best friend’s brother, he’s a guy who deserves more than Haleigh’s checkered past could ever offer. At first glance, Haleigh is no longer the girl Cooper pined for in school. The sleek, professional OB-GYN seems more out of reach than ever for this small-town mechanic. But the more time he spends with the complicated woman, the more he wants her. Who better than Cooper to prove to her that nothing is beyond fixing? Especially in Ardent Springs, a town that’s tailor-made for second chances.

For most of her life Haleigh has known she isn't loved, isn't good enough for her mother. That lack of any motherly love has defined her life and now after one more failed relationship she has moved back to Ardent Springs for a fresh start.

Cooper has loved Haleigh since high school. He even proposed but she immediately rejected him thinking he was just trying to save her from the mess she found herself in. Now she has returned to Ardent Springs and he still loves her. But in her time away she has collected a whole load of baggage, everything from failed relationships to being an alcoholic, not to mention her relationship with her mother hasn't improved.

All Cooper needs to do is convince Haleigh that they're worth a shot.

Contemporary Romance is pretty damned conservative. The protagonists nearly always follow the rules, make the right decisions. They never cheat, they always decide to have the baby, they don't fall off the wagon and they're always supportive and protective of their lover. The rules of the genre are all but set in stone.

And that's why Terri Osburn is one of a handful of CR authors I keep coming back to. Her books are proper contemporary romance but she isn't afraid to take the road less travelled. When I pick up one of her books I know there will be a surprise or two, I know I'm going to get a few moments that will make me smile for no other reason than their originality.

I wasn't going to do this, talking about sex scenes is just awkward but during a sex scene in this book I had a moment or two. A few sentences here and there made me think of a poem written by one of the great American poets, e.e. cummings, she being brand new....

I like a happily-ever-after as much as the next reader of romance, but not when the HEA is an UHEA --unbelievably happily ever after. There weren't too many people I really liked in this book. Haleigh Rae is a martyr to her mother's guilt trip, still trying to win Mommy's love, even though it drove her to drink (literally.) Cooper's a great guy ... a little too great. Door mat great. Though by all accounts, he's also drop dead gorgeous, and he definitely deserves someone better. Haleigh's right about that much. Spencer, Cooper's supposed best friend, jumps on him over nothing. I mean, is Cooper the only person in town who can solve a problem/answer a question? Apparently so. And Abby, Haleigh's supposed best friend has been carrying a tragic grudge for months, and yet has never indicated by word or action that she holds the grudge, until it burst forth ... after which it is disposed of with remarkable speed. And one of my pet peeves is when the irredeemably negative parents are suddenly transformed into rational, (semi)loving individuals, i.e., Haleigh's truly nasty mom. The most interesting character in the book was Jessi with her sweet baby, Emma. Practical, intelligent, straightforward, for all that she's only 19. I liked Jessi, and her new boyfriend, Ian, too. Although I'm less sanguine than Haleigh about them becoming a longterm couple.

If this was a stand-alone, I wouldn't recommend reading it. But the other books in the series are good, and Osburn's writing in general is worth reading.

I loved this book! Cooper is the twin brother of Haleigh's best friend Abby and has been in love with Haleigh since they were teenagers. Haleigh is now a doctor, but has been to hell and back in her personal life. She feels that she is a bad bet for Cooper, but the attraction is overwhelming. Cooper owns an auto body shop and thinks she is too good for him. There is the complication of Haleigh believing her difficult mother will make things hard for them. Also, Cooper's sister is totally resistant to the match. However, these two can't help themselves! They have some major hurdles to get to the relationship they both deserve. I am looking forward to the next book, which I hope will be Abby's!

When I first started the Ardent Springs series I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not but each book I am becoming more fond of this town and the characters. This could certainly be read as a standalone but seriously where is the fun in that?

In this installment of Ardent Springs it's time for Cooper to have his HEA with the girl he has crushed on for decades, Haleigh.

Copper is the "white night" that women dream of. He's always coming to the rescue in one way or another. After finding a pregnant teen about to give birth, Cooper manages to get her to the hospital and stay with her the whole time (sweet right?). At the hospital he runs into his sisters best friend and long time crush, Dr. Haleigh Rae Mitchner.

Haleigh is only been back in town for about six months but she is definitely seeing Cooper in a different light. While Cooper flirts with her she knows it won't go anywhere because she doesn't think of herself good enough. Haleigh might have a lot of skeletons in her closet but that doesn't matter to Cooper and he still sees her as the girl she once was.

I really enjoyed this story and these characters. I'm such a sucker for small town romances and this one included many moments that tugged on my heart strings. I'm not from a small town so it's hard to imagine that some people could be so selfless and band together when needed and Osburn takes these characters there at least once throughout the book and the series.

Cooper loving Haleigh since he was a boy was just super sweet and I loved she had no idea. I thought they had great chemistry and was totally rooting for them to hurry up and make it official.

The ending was just okay for me. Haleigh messes up but fixes it almost right away in a very big way. Overall I really enjoyed this read and I'm already looking forward to seeing who will book 4 be about. I'm seriously hoping its Abby because she definitely deserves a HEA after what has happened to her.

If you love small town romances as much as I do I would add My One and Only to your TBR pile.

Terri Osburn does not create simple, non-dimensional characters. They are multi-layered, complicated, and flawed, making them infinitely more interesting. Take Haleigh, the heroine of My One and Only. Here is a woman who has regrets, who carries guilt and shame. A respected doctor, she has the outward appearance of a successful woman who has her life in order but, inside? Inside, she's one hot mess - a recovering alcoholic battling issues of self-esteem, and enough parental baggage to sink a boat. Returning home to Ardent Springs six months ago after the failure of her third engagement, she's working as an OBGYN at the local hospital, renting a room from her best friend, and trying to establish a healthy relationship with her impossible-to-please mother, an almost impossible task. There's no time in her life for a man, especially not her best friend's twin brother and all-around good guy, Cooper Ridgeway who most certainly deserves someone much better than Haleigh.

Cooper Ridgeway feels like he's spent his whole life loving Haleigh Rae Mitchner but he's never felt worthy of her. His mean, drunk of a father did a number on Cooper's self-esteem that far outlasted the man's life. Even though Coop runs a successful business, he can't imagine what an educated, confident, doctor would ever see in a small-town mechanic so he keeps his distance. When a pregnant teen searching for her biological father brings Cooper and Haleigh together, Haleigh begins to view him as more than her friend's brother and when things begin to sizzle, Coop sees an opportunity to finally go after the woman he's always wanted. But when complications arise and truths begin to surface, will it bring them together or tear them apart?

There were times in this book when I was angry with Haleigh's behavior, when I wanted her to stand up for herself and for Cooper. But when you've spent most of your life being told you're not good enough by the person who should love you the most, it plays with your mind, your heart, your very soul. It creates patterns of behavior and belief that are not overcome quickly or easily, at least not in real life. Kudos to Osburn for keeping it real with this character and not taking the easy path. It may make it harder for some readers to like Haleigh but, for me, it makes this a more interesting, realistic, and, ultimately, satisfying story.

Then there's Cooper. Oh, my. Terri Osburn writes some terrific book boyfriends and Cooper, for my taste, is the best of the bunch. Much of the time I wasn't sure if I wanted to hug him, jump him, or give him a stern talking to but from the first page to the last, I never wavered in my adoration of this character as I cheered him on in his quest for a happy ending with his one and only. I do hope we'll be seeing more of him in future books. A community of secondary characters rounds out the cast, including the main couples from the first two books, whose relationships are progressing, and new characters who I'm hoping will figure prominently as the series moves forward.

If you enjoy small-town, contemporary romance with a rich depth of emotion, realistically flawed characters, humor, sizzle and a whole lot of heart, look no further than Terri Osburn's Ardent Springs series. My One and Only can easily be read as a stand-alone but for a more complete understanding of the characters, both primary and secondary, I recommend reading the books in order: His First and Last, Our Now and Forever, and My One and Only.

In My One and Only by Terri Osburn, Haleigh is back in her hometown of Ardent Springs. With a lot of past and present issues weighing on her, the last thing she's looking for is a relationship. Especially with her best friends twin brother. But a homeless young mother in her delivery room ends up bringing Cooper and Haleigh into each other's orbits again. Cooper has always been interested in Haleigh, but she's given him nothing to indicate she felt the same way. As they spend more time in each others company however, the mutual attraction becomes obvious. Haleigh is convinced she'll never be enough for Cooper, but Cooper gets the feeling he'll never meet Haleigh's standards. Slowly they become closer, but Haleigh's issues, secrecy and past have a strong hold on her and soon despite her best efforts, she's hurting Cooper anyway. Will they be over before they really start? Or can Haleigh have her second chance in Ardent Springs?

I felt a lot of conflict at times while reading My One and Only. I really liked Cooper. He has a big heart, thinks of others, is successful and has been happy in his life even if he hasn't found a woman to settle down with. He really just comes across as a great guy, has lots of friends, and doesn't judge. I found Haleigh very difficult to like and connect with. She has a lot of guilt from the past, is insecure, and has a strong need for her mother's approval despite having always felt nothing but disdain from the woman. This really affects her way of being in all areas of her life. Her actions contradict a lot of what she says, especially to Cooper. Part of me really just wanted him to let her go. But like in real life, there are people you don't always like or connect with, and this helped the characters feel real. They, especially Haleigh, were definitely not perfect (ok, Cooper was probably close!). I liked that they had a history together, and it helped with the development of their relationship as adults.

There are a lot of sub plots within My One and Only involving the secondary characters, from the young homeless new mother and the mystery she shows up with, and family dynamics involving not only Haleigh and her mother, but between both main characters and Cooper's sister. This added more believability to the plot to see these other areas of their lives. The secondary characters are all different and important to different parts of the story.

Part of Terri Osburn's Ardent Springs series, My One and Only can be read as a stand alone.

My One and Only was probably one of the most refreshing books that I have read all year. It may have had the usual cliches such as the overbearing mother and the small town gossip but the one thing that it didn’t have was a hero with a checkered past still trying to slay his demons. No, in this book, the hero is a mechanic named Cooper Ridgeway who didn’t bend to his father’s will and decided to follow his own passion of working on cars. Cooper owns a successful auto repair shop and everyone in the small town of Ardent Springs, Tennessee knows that he is a good guy even if he wishes that he wasn’t sometimes. On the other hand, the heroine, OB/GYN Haleigh Mitchner is all sorts of screwed up thanks to her mother. Haleigh is a recovering alcoholic and she just moved back to town after ending her engagement to an up and coming plastic surgeon that her mother loves.

Cooper runs into Haleigh when he rushes a young stranger in labor to the town hospital where Haleigh works. The young girl, Jessi is in town to find the father she never knew so she and her newborn can have a family. Jessi ends up moving into the house of Cooper’s twin sister Abby who is also renting a room to Haleigh. Being the white knight that he is, Cooper decides to help Jessi find her father. In addition, Cooper also tries to show Haleigh that she deserves to be happy with a good man like him. Haleigh struggles with her past and present situation. She continues to try and appease her mom while demeaning herself. To make things more complicated, Abby doesn’t want Haleigh who just so happens to be her best friend since third grade, anywhere near Cooper. Abby knows Haleigh’s track record with men and alcohol so she refuses to let her brother get hurt or suffer the same abuse that she and Cooper suffered from their own alcoholic father.

Cooper is the best part of this book. He thinks that he isn’t good enough for Haleigh but he pursues her anyway. He has loved her most of his life and refuses to walk away. He doesn’t care about her flaws or her past. If I couldn’t see how good they were for each other, I would have wanted Cooper to give up. Oddly enough, they really were complementary to each other and very compatible between the sheets. Speaking of those sheets, they were on fire and some of the scenes were rather explicit and unexpected so be prepared for a cold shower. All in all, I was very impressed with this book.

I love the people and town of Ardent Springs. They feel so genuine, good and bad, and the sense of community written in the books creates a curiosity for the townsfolk.

Cooper Ridgeway is an absolute good guy. Always there for everyone and helping out even when he doesn't realize his actions are having such a positive and uplifting effect on those around him. But harboring a unrequited love for his sister's lifelong best friend has been difficult for Cooper and now that Dr. Haleigh Rae Mitchner is back in town Cooper is not sure he can measure up to her successful career seeing as he is the town mechanic. Doesn't matter, the feelings are still there but stronger and she is still beautiful and sexy to Cooper.

Haleigh may be a doctor but she sees herself as not good enough, and has a past that shames her right along with her mother. A mom is to support, love and be proud of their children and Haleigh has never had that yet always sought it. When she feels so ashamed of herself and actions of the past she feels she isn't good enough for Cooper, a superhero in her eyes. Being the town mechanic may not measure up for what Haleigh's mom thinks her daughter should have, but will she continue to poison her daughter's mind or will Haleigh finally rely on the strength she possesses and claim what is hers.

The story bringing Cooper and Haleigh into one another's life is a pregnant teen named Jessi in search of her father. I loved that story line and how the community came together to help. The perks of small town living, I know because I live in Tennessee.

I must say that Terri Osburn has me guessing who in Ardent Springs will be the focus of Book 4. When I read a series and immediately start wondering who will be the focus of the next book, I know the author has done a great job writing!

Terri Osburn gives her readers another winner in this cross-class romance featuring a doctor and a mechanic.

Haleigh Rae Mitchner is an OB-GYN who is also a recovering alcoholic with old guilt and on-going mother issues. Cooper Ridgeway is another of Osburn’s good-guy heroes with a supersize heart and a nurturer’s skills. Cooper has been in love with Haleigh, his sister’s best friend for years, but he has little hope that a woman as beautiful and educated as Haleigh could ever fall for him. Although Haleigh has inherited little of her mother’s snobbery and is fully conscious of Cooper’s worth, she thinks she, with all her baggage, is unworthy of his love. As if their own insecurities are not enough, Haleigh and Cooper must also contend with the nay-sayers to their romance among family and friends. They truly earn their HEA.

A bit darker than Osburn’s usual offering, My One and Only still features the qualities that define her work--believable, likeable characters in a heartwarming, small-town setting. I admit to one near book-tossing moment when Abby betrays Haleigh, but I decided if Haleigh could forgive her, I should too. Aside from that moment, this book is a keeper all the way. And I am in love with Cooper. He is rivaling Randy Navarro (Home to Stay, Anchor Island 3) for my favorite Osburn hero.

If you are a fan of contemporary romance with a bit of sizzle and an abundance of heart, grab this one today. It is Janga-recommended.

I am familiar with this author through her Anchor Island series (which I enjoyed) and was anxious to read this book which I was lucky enough to win through a Goodreads giveaway. I have not read the other two in the series yet (although I have purchased them). This book can be read as a standalone - although with references to characters from the other two books, I didn't feel that I missed anything major . Although I am what you might call a "mature" reader, the cover art on the books in the series is very appealing, fresh and contemporary.

On to the storyline -
There were times in this book when I strongly wondered whether this couple would get together. Haleigh is one hot mess and Cooper is the steadfast, loyal, supportive hero who makes her believe in herself. I was glad to see them finally get it together despite Haleigh's many issues and doubts - she spends a majority of the book insisting she isn't good enough for Cooper (which I tend to agree with). There are lots of emotions in this book - two side storylines involving Cooper's sister, Abby, and the death of her husband in the Middle East as well as a teenage new mother, Jessi, who comes to town hoping to find a father she never knew.

Overall, a very good romantic read that I would highly recommend.

An awesome story that takes us back to to small town of Ardent Springs. This is Cooper and Haleigh's story and it's fantastic. While there are a couple of very interesting sub-plots to this one the main focus is the developing relationship between Cooper and Haleigh.

Haleigh may seem to have her life together. Respectable OB/gyn, back in her hometown and working hard. What most people don't know is that she has a strained relationship with her mother and she's overcome some very serious problems in her past. When Cooper Ridgeway shows up in her hospital with a very pregnant teenager she knows that he is that same kind "rescuer" she knew in high school. What she doesn't know is that Cooper has never forgotten her and even though he doesn't know if he deserves someone like her and can't help but want her. Could she be happy with the town mechanic? Will he still want her when he knows all her secrets??

This is definitely a book I recommend to everyone.

Haleigh Rae Mitchner was never good enough no matter how much she did she was always below the standard set by her Mom. She is a successful doctor and lives with her best friend Abby.
Cooper Ridgeway is always there for her even though she has what she believe are secrets from him. He will do anything for any one. Which is how he ends up in Dr. Haleigh's delivery room with a young girl.
The Ardent Springs books are stand alone books however I like the fact that I was able to read about the characters from the past books and it all fits in.
This is all I am giving you. Your emotions will be all over this place you want to feel sorry for Haleigh but her strength won't let you. She has a lot to deal with and it is going to hit the fan before it gets better. In the end you will end up rooting for her.

My One and Only is the third book in the Ardent Springs series by Terri Osburn. This book and all the books in this series are stand alone novels but I suggest reading them in order as the couples significant others are discussed and reappear throughout.
I was looking forward to this one because it seemed a little different from the previous two books. But, unfortunately, it kept the same formula as the other two books and though I enjoyed the story, I was expecting more from Cooper.
The way he was described in this book seemed different from the previous books and I thought he seemed too much of a pushover... a sweetheart, but a pushover none the less.
Overall, I enjoyed the story but I didn't particularly like any of the characters.

Let's review the cavalcade of horrible decisions:

-The main character (Haleigh Rae....) is an OBGYN in a hospital. She gets in a patient in labor, I don't think the patient's age is ever given, but she's referred to as a teenager constantly. Haleigh Rae's best friend's brother, who Haleigh Rae hasn't seen for roughly since she graduated high school, found the girl in labor hiding in his garage and brought her in.

-When Haleigh Rae finds out the girl is a runaway and has nowhere to go, rather than getting her hospital's social workers involved, she decides the best and most reasonable option here is to convince the best friend's brother, who again, she hasn't had any direct contact with in 13 or so years (so she knew him once, doesn't know the current him), that he should take this teenage girl and her new baby back home to live with him temporarily.

Forget the optics and the harm to his reputation he would take if he installed a teenager and her baby in his house. What about the girl? Yes, she held his hand through the birth because she literally had no one else and was terrified and out of it with pain. Is she really going to feel comfortable living with an older man she does not know? Especially with the added stress of being postpartum and a new baby making lots of noise? And even if this guy isn't someone who would take advantage of a young girl, there's still a chance of a teenager in a vulnerable state imprinting on someone older who is helping take care of her and falling in love with him. Like this is the worst idea ever.

-Luckily he shuts that idea down. So Haleigh Rae, and her best friend (who also works at the hospital) next have the brilliant idea that the two of them will take their two patients home with them to live. Was this woman sick through her courses on patient-doctor boundaries? What happens to the job she loves when the hospital finds out that she took a minor patient (well, two minor patients) home, after first trying to send her off with an older man the girl doesn't know....?

-So, they install the girl in their house, and the next morning, the best friend's mother barges in, demands that the teenager hand her baby over to BF's mom so she can babysit. That's it, that's literally the whole conversation. New mom checks with Haleigh Rae, who is like, oh yeah, you should just leave your baby with this woman you don't know, don't even try to fight her to keep your own baby, it'll be totally fine, go back to bed. Instead of, I don't know, maybe talking about the girl about how you should vet people (or at the very least, have an actual conversation with them) before handing your newborn baby to them for hours on end....

At that point I had to give up.

I was liking this book, but I wanted to see more of the side characters, and I really didn’t like the conflict or how it was solved.

I was kind of interested in reading other books in this series at the beginning, but the conflict is making me hesitant in trying them.

Fun and entertaining!

Chapter 1 was hilarious I have never laughed so hard in a book in the beginning of the story. I only gave it a 4 star because I really could not connect much with Haleigh in the story. She's a grown woman and has a bitter relationship with her mother but she kept on trying to please her or she thought that was what she was doing. The mother was just rude to her daughter even if Haleigh has continuously supported her financially. Cooper is the one I love most. I really like his character. He is truly the knight in the shining armor. He is very likable character. He is in love with Haleigh when they were still in grade school. Haleigh was just too blind to notice.

Overall, I recommend this book to you all. You will enjoy it. I love the secondary characters and the people in Ardent Springs.

Terri Osborn is a masterful story teller!

Don't let yourselves be fooled by the other series writers out there. Terri Osborn has a genuine talent for talking some the hardest blows life has to offer and spinning it into an amazing HEA! Alcoholism, domestic violence, had parenting illegitimate children and infidelity are all twisted into fabulous reading.
I think I've fallen in love with everyone character written in this series but the Haileigh and Cooper story is my favorite so far! Cooper is such a stand up guy and so hot! Haileigh is beautifully flawed and not your typically arrogant MD. As odd as this couple appear, they are perfect for each other!

This is the story of Haleigh and Cooper. Cooper has loved her for years, but she’s always been his twin sister’s, (Abby) best friend. When Haleigh moves in with Abby, Cooper and hersee more of each other. Abby warns Cooper that Haleigh is not right for him, while warning Haleigh not to break Cooper’s heart. Abby is going through some issues of her own, which you will learn about in the book. I have to say I can’t stand Haleigh’s mom. I won’t leave any spoilers because I think everyone should read and form their own opinions, but that is one witch. I really enjoyed the ending, which had me changing my mind about a certain male and even a certain female.

Wow

This book was about a guy who had loved a girl since they were young and she never saw it, maybe because he was her best friends twin or just that she thought he was a nice guy.
Her mother was a piece of work always looking down her nose at people and giving the fact that Cooper was a mechanic, not to mention that he owned his own garage, she didn't think that her mom would ever approve of him since she was a Dr.
Cooper didn't think he was good enough for her and she felt she wasn't good enough for him, but in the end love won out.
This is an awesome book of how love will overcome any obstacle. Grab your copy today and check it out.

Bit unrealistic for me, even for this genre of book. I really liked the other two books but Hannah was such a whiny character that I just plainly didn't like her. She seemed to learn nothing from her experiences bad and good. I was really looking forward to this one and Cooper is a sweetheart, a love blind sweetheart but hey! All the redemption type stuff was so off the cuff and out of nowhere I felt like screaming. Hoping for more out of the next book.

Another Great Read

I am really enjoying this Ardent Spring's Series.. My One and Only was just as hard to put down as the first two books in this series. Love how characters interact in each book. Terri Osburn is,a very talented author.

Ardent Springs

I’ve enjoyed this series so far & look forward to the rest. I think I liked the 2nd one best so far, but this was cute! I really liked the way it was all neatly wrapped up at the end.

Really like tis series, The characters are not perfect, in fact Haleigh is a recovering alcoholic and Cooper, although he has a heart of gold is still not perfect, although he is probably close. There's good side stories with endearing characters that you are glad to revisit in the next book.

One & Only

This is another good book by Terri that I didn't want to put down. I have enjoyed reading this series and the characters. Haleigh' s mom is a piece of work who would drive anyone to drink. I love Cooper who strong, kind, loyal and very caring.
