Lovely! What a fantastic addition to Canadian literature and to children’s education! This book was printed in 2010, for The Learning Partnership’s Welcome To Kindergarten program. Their slogan is “Champions Of Public Education Across Canada”. “10 Drowsy Dinosaurs” by Wendy Frood Auger & Les Drew is memorable visually and emotionally. This sweet storybook comprises a bright, sequential build-up of animals, colours, numbers, emotions, language, activities, and rhythmic cadence: a strong, all-around learning tool. Lesson plans and games follow, for parents and other teachers. I give five happy stars for its delightfulness as a story and excellent educational value: very well thought out.
Not a Mom to human mammals, I enjoy books as stories and artwork. Both of these aspects are a treat! Les used a simplistic style, solid colours inside basic line-drawn shapes but brought life to each of these dinosaurs! With a few lines, he knew how to convey touching, vivid, relatable emotions; therefore readers automatically love these little guys. When you pay attention and notice that dinosaur #1 felt blue, because he had a cut on his tail and a pink nurse mends him, as dinosaur #2: you feel relieved along with him and smile! Yes, I sure am a softie, which is why I stick to happy feelings.
Just like proper Canadians - indeed, we are home to some of the largest and most intact, actual dinosaurs in the world: 7 of them have a good party, ice-skating together. There is a lot of humour and a few frowns as it grows crowded but this clan is welcoming as it builds. It is adorable and makes sense, that their eclectic species variety eventually tires, after pages of partying. Seeing all 10 reposed, using each other as pillows, is really beautiful. I am glad I have this book.
My 1 year olds absolute favourite book! She has made us read it so many times, i can now recite it by heart. The story is easy, repetitive enough to make it flow, and we have been using it in many forms, colours, actions, counting... love it!
