अॅडम [Adam]
Varad, the main character of Adam. This book reveals his journey throughout this life. In a way, it is almost similar to any man’s journey, thoughts, acts and beliefs. This novel is in a way the graph of his complete lifecycle, right from the beginning. At his young tender age he is very much curious about the other gender, but his curiousity is never satisfied in a proper way. When he attains maturity, he is ruthlessly used by grown up yet unsatisfied females. He himself falls in love whereas Shyamala marries him not for love but just for convenience. Later, she remarries with her own first love. This leaves Varad in a very sad state of mind. His shattered mind turns to Prema. He gives unconditional shelter to Prema and her children who later asks him for her share in his property. Lastly, he seems to find solace in Nirmala’s company. But this does not continue for too long. Once again, Varad is left all alone in this world, loveless…………

अॅडम, लेखक रत्नाकर मतकरी यांची मी हि पहिलीच कादंबरी वाचली. पुस्तकाचं मलपृष्ठ वाचून मला हि कादंबरी वाचविशी वाटली. सुरवातीला मला वाटलं कि कादंबरी थोडी जास्तच कामवासनेबद्दल आहे कि काय, पण हळू हळू ती तिची कूस बदलत वरदा च्या आयुष्यातील बऱ्या-वाईट गोष्टीकडे वळते. वरदाची नोकरी, त्यासोबतचे चढउतार, त्याची घुसमटही खुप प्रकर्षाने मांडलीये. पण तरीही मुख्य विषय काम हाच आहे किंवा मला तसा वाटला. एकूण कदंबरी खिळवून ठेवते, वरदाचं आयुष्य, त्याचं एकूण यशापयश सगळ मनाला भिडतं आणि आपणहि त्याचे सहप्रवासी होत जातो. पुस्तक पूर्ण वाचू झाल्यावर एक खिन्नता जाणवू लागते.
कादंबरी वाचताना सतत जाणवत राहतं ते म्हणजे ही कादंबरी अनुवादीत आहे की काय. कारण कानडी-तामिळ संस्कृती इतक्या ताकदीने संबंध कादंबरीत उतरलीये की असं वाटनं, किमान मला तरी, साहजिक वाटतय.
पुस्तकाचा साधारण गोषवारा ..
पौगंडावस्तेतली मुलांची लैगिक गोष्टी बद्दलच आकर्षण आणि त्याचे मोलकरणीबरोबरचे संबंध आणि त्यातून त्याला मिळालेला आनंद त्याला रुक्मिणीबरोबर नाही मिळत. पण तसं का ते त्याला समजत नाही.
महाविद्यालयीन काळात तीन बहिणीबरोबर तो सुरवातीला स्वतंत्र व नंतर सामूहिक संभोग करतो आणि कालांतरातने तो त्यातून बाहेर पडतो जेव्हा त्याला शामलेचं आकर्षण वाटतं. पुढे जाऊन तो तिच्याबरोबर लग्नही करतो, पण त्याला कळतं कि तिला त्याच्यावर कसलच प्रेम नसत आणि ती तिच्या पूर्वीच्या प्रियकरासोबत संबंध ठेवून वरदाला खूप वाईट रित्या फसवून त्याचं आयुष्य उजाड करते, अगदी त्याची MRF मधील नोकरीही हिसकावून थांबत नाही तर त्याच्या भविष्य निर्वाह निधी वरही डल्ला मारते. परिणामी वरदा अगदी रस्त्यावर येतो आणि एका मित्राकडे राहायला जातो ज्याला त्याने त्याच्या प्रेमविवाहाच्यावेळी त्याला मदत केलेली असते.
मग तो एका रबर कंपनीमध्ये तो काम सुरु करतो पूर्वीच्या पगाराच्या अर्ध्या पगारावर आणि त्याला इथे प्रेमा भेटते, तिच्या पूर्वायुष्यात तिने फारच हाल-अपेष्टा काढलेल्या असतात. अगदी नवऱ्याकडूनही लैगिक आणि शारीरिक छळ झालेला असतो. ते सर्व ऐकून तो द्रवतो आणि तिची पूर्ण मदत करतो.
जेव्हा तो रबर कंपनी सोडून रिक्शा चालवू लागतो तेव्हा प्रेमा आणि तिची मुलं खूप आकांडतांडव करतात, त्याना ते काम अप्रतिष्ठेचं वाटतं, जे लोक एक वेळच्या अन्नाला महाग असतात आणि हि प्रेमा तर वेश्या व्यवसायही करायला तयार असते, हे फारच विचित्र आणि वाईट वाटतं .... आणि नंतर तर ती त्याला त्याच्या घरावर हक्क सांगू लागते आणि तेही वकिलामार्फत. हि घटना फारच हृदयद्रावक आहे. त्याला सर्व कळत असतं परंतु तो तिला ते घर देऊन टाकतो आणि निर्मलाकडे जातो, जिच्याकडून त्याला थोडंफार प्रेम मिळालेलं असतं... पण तीचाही साखरपुडा झालेला असतो.
.... आणि तो पुन्हा रस्त्यावर येतो अगदी त्याच पूर्वीच्याच अवस्थेतेत..... एकटा, अगदी कफल्लक ...

रत्नाकर मतकरी हे कायम भय आणि गूढ कथा यासाठी प्रसिद्ध राहिलेले आहेत. पण हे पुस्तक वेगळे असून यात एका तामिळ ख्रिश्चन मुलाची कथा सांगितली आहे. नायक वरदा आणि त्याच्या जीवनात बालपणापासून पन्नाशीपर्यंत आलेल्या अनेक स्त्रियांची वैषयिक कथा सुंदररित्या लिहिली आहे.
हे पुस्तक मराठी असूनही इतर भाषेतून मराठीमध्ये अनुवाद केल्यासारखे वाचताना वाटत राहते. त्याला बरीच कारणे आहेत जसे की ही गोष्ट तामिळ आणि त्यातल्या त्यात ख्रिश्चन मुलाची आहे, एकही घटना महाराष्ट्रात घडत नाही किंवा पात्रांची नावे सुद्धा मराठी नाहीत.
यातील काही प्रसंग काही जणांना थोडे अश्लील वाटू शकतात. एकूणच हे पुस्तक तुम्हाला मनोरंजन तसेच काही ठिकाणी भावनिक सुद्धा करते. त्यात या पुस्तकाचा शेवट करुणादायी आहे.

मनाला स्पर्शून जाणारी अशी ही कादंबरी. शेवट happily ever after नसेलच अशी शंका नसून खात्री असताना देखील मन वरदाच्याच बाजूने झुकून राहतं. अंती तरी तो स्वतःसाठी स्वतःच्या बाजूने विचार करून झुंजेल असं वाटत राहतं. तू किती मूर्ख आहेस हे सगळं सहन करायला वरदा, असं माझंच मन त्याच्याशी भांडत राहीलं पुस्तक संपेपर्यंत. किंतु पुस्तक अखेरीस समजून चुकलं आता किती उशीर झाला आहे ते. स्वतःची शारीरिक भूक मिटवण्याची अनेकदा संधी मिळत असूनसुद्धा, हा वरदा स्वतःसाठी कधीच का जगू शकला नाही असा प्रश्न वेळोवेळी मनाला सतावत राहतो.

Graphic in its content and true to the story. Quite a good read about what happens when you are married to a psycho. The characterizations are thorough, Adam's innocence and honesty, the vengeful women who're he married to and other persons.

Adam by Ratnakar Matkari is a book that takes us through the life of a man from his childhood to adolescence to maturity and finally to his middle age.

Vardhan, the protagonist of the book like any young child in a tender age, is curious about the body of a woman. Unfortunately even before he could truly understand the nuances of his mind, he meets women who are deprived of bodily pleasures and make use of him for their own satisfaction.

By the time Vardhan goes to college, Vardhan has already slept with a few women. But someone for whom a female is just a carrier of a beautiful body and the only relationship that a male and woman can have is to please each other in bed; when he meets Shyamla in his college, all he wants is to win her mind and not once does he think about her body. And getting married to Shyamla is one of his dreams that comes true. But on the first night of their wedding, he is shattered when he finds out that his wife is repulsive of a male body. Ever since they are married, she doesn't allow him to even touch her. As time passes, their relationship only worsens as Shyamla keeps depriving him of the bodily pleasures and also harassing him financially and emotionally. Yet, he tolerates her every act only because he loves her truly and is hopeful that she will change someday. However, his world collapses when Shyamla leaves him for an old lover and he realises she had only married him for convenience and had never loved him.

He tries to start a new life but his life takes different turns further as he meets different women in different situations. Life has not been good for him even through his jobs. His ideologies make him a misfit in every job that he takes.

The book handles a very bold topic of male-female attraction in a very mature way that doesn't incline towards vulgarity. The author puts across the raw emotions of a man without mincing his words.
The book though started off good, but lost its momentum and felt a bit dragged towards the end. While I felt sympathetic towards Vardhan in the beginning for how his life has turned out to be, it went on turning out to be too much victimization of the protagonist and Vardhan started to sound too preachy.

Nevertheless, this book gives us an insight into a man's mind. In the times of pseudo feminism, where we read a lot about the women's problems, this book gives us a glimpse of hardships a man faces at the hands of a woman.

रत्नाकर मतकरी ह्यांचे हे मी वाचलेले दुसरे पुस्तक.
ॲडम ही कादंबरी वाचताना, सतत एकच सतत वाटून गेले, केंव्हा संपणार आहे हे मांडलेले थैमान ?
कादंबरी मधे नायकाची पौगंडावस्थेतील ते साधारणतः चाळिशी - पन्नाशी पर्यंतच्या काळातील जीवन प्रवास वर्णनेला आहे. पुस्तकाचा मुख्य विषय हा कामवासना आहेच, पण वाचताना वाटले की हा विषय थोडा प्रखर रित्या मांडला गेला.
एकंदरीत नायकाची तरुण अवस्थेतील स्त्रियांप्रती शारीरिक आकर्षण, ती जाणून घेण्यासाठी, क्षणिक सुखाला सुख मानून किंवा प्रेम नसताना फक्त शारीरिक भूक भागवण्यासाठी चाललेली धडपड, आणि त्यातून कालांतराने दुखावल्या गेलेली मने.
असे वाटले लग्नानंतर त्याला जे काही बायको ( शामली ) कडून भोगावे लागले, जीला आश्रय दिला त्या प्रेमाने वाटा मागितला, आणि चुकून आलेली निर्मला तिच्या सहवासाला मुकावे लागले; जणू ते त्याचे पूर्व कर्माचे फळ भोगवे लागत आहे. पुस्तकात आलेली बाकीची पात्र पण अनैतिकतेला शोभवी अशीच मांडली आहेत.
पण माणूस म्हणून वरदासाठी, त्याच्या झालेल्या छळासाठी, त्याची सर्व बाजूने अगदी नौकरी मधे, कौटुंबिक, भावनिक पातळीवर झालेली कोंडी ह्यावर हळहळ वक्त करताना सुद्धा एकच विचार मनात राहून गेला की, प्रेम, वासना, ह्यांचे हे व्यभिचारी रूप आणि खरेच इतके अनैतिक पद्धतीची माणसे ह्या जगात असू शकतात ?

Though it starts off good, loses the momentum midway. You keep thinking how the protagonist can be so idiot that he is watching his life fall & still doing nothing.
Had high hopes as novel was written by my all time favourite author, but ah well...

Book explores the premise "If male female bodies are capable of providing each other immense pleasure, why they often fail to do so on consistent basis."
Some people called the character pshyco, they must be considering this subject as taboo due to Indian social conditioning.
