February 18, 2023I cannot unpack what needs to be unpacked with this book, but one thing is clear there is a lot of underlying ableism in this book and I ABSOLUTELY HATED IT. Should have left this experience in my childhood.

So readers are often very flawed because apparently they think kids are dumb, but this one didn't make sense to me because a.) if he was always going to be "special" in the end, why not just make him "special" to begin with? b.) why can't he be "special" as he is? and c.) he says god doesn't talk to him, only in his heart but then Lucado has god speaking to Hermie later on.

I love the simplicity of this story but the great impact of the message. It's great for young children who are learning about God and trying to understand Him. Max Lucado's children's books are great for teaching children about God and this one is great for teaching children that they are special to God no matter what and that He is always working in them to make them the best they can be.

This was a cute book to read. I liked the message that was given as well. My 3 kids and I enjoyed reading this book. I would recommend this book to others.

I feel like the story was simple with good intentions but very redundant and the ending was lackluster for how much build up in repetition there was.

Hermie the caterpillar has quite a following. He has his own website and a whole line of DVDs and books that children love. Parents also love them for their morals and teachings about God. Hermie’s adventures and talks with God are a wonderful springboard for encouraging children to develop their own relationship with Him. Now children can read about Hermie all by themselves with the new readers. These books are retellings of the original favorites that have been revised for the younger reader.
Hermie a common caterpillar is a level two reader. The familiar story of how Hermie and his friend Wormie find out that they are special in God’s eyes is presented in a simply worded story that will capture your child’s attention and make him want to read. But don’t worry—this is NOT Dick and Jane level reading. While simplified, the vocabulary is broad enough to create an engaging story that children will go to again and again. The book is bright and colorful with fully illustrated pages that keep the interest level high. This is a quality story book for the young reader that will encourage him to practice his reading skills.

Max Lucado is a wonderful author. my kids and I love this book. I loved the colorful eye catching pictures. the kids are learning lessons with out knowing it.
Hermie and Wormie compare themselves to others and pray that God makes them un-common. In the end Hermie becomes a beautiful butterfly.

I like Max Lucado's Max on Life (and he's a great source of quotable quotes on Twitter) so I thought I'd try his children's book Hermie: A Common Caterpillar.
I was hoping for a children's classic, the kind that is written for kids but has the adults raving. Unfortunately, Hermie feels like a rip-off of a real children's classic--The Ugly Duckling, translated in Christian-ese.
Instead of a duck feeling so ugly, Hermie is a caterpillar bemoaning the fact that he is so "common." I'm not sure children at this stage struggle with being ordinary or have a desire to stand out--in fact, don't they like to fit in and avoid sticking out like a sore thumb?
The ugly duckling, meanwhile, felt ugly because he was taunted by others--I'm not sure if children on their own feel ugly (or common, for that matter) when they look at the mirror.
Throughout the story, Hermie and his fellow commoner Wormie compare themselves with others and pray to God to be made un-common. The end, of course, is predictable: Hermie becomes a beautiful swan--oh wait, no, a butterfly.

I thought these were delightful readers for the young ones to be introduced to!! The morals are wonderful and each child should know that they are loved, blessed and cherished. I thought the messages that each book shared are ones that encouraged positive thoughts and actions.
The illustrations were wonderfully depicted. Each page was awash with colour, making the characters appear charismatic and child-friendly. The read-to-me readers are only about 10 pages long and are sure to be you and your child's favourites. The messages are clear and concise and endearing.
I would certainly give these books a five out of five star review, they are more than worth that!! Their design and their intent are equally merited in positive influence and appealing approach.

Hermie - A Common Caterpillar is another beautifully illustrated and engaging children's book from Max Lucado. My children both love Hermie and Wormie (the two main characters) and whilst my two year old enjoys the pictures and being read to, my four year old engages in a much deeper way, applying truth from the story to himself and others.
A common caterpillar is about how Hermie doesn't feel very special, but how God loves him just how he is, but He isn't finished with him yet! It's a lovely story about comparison, identity and patience.
I whole-heartedly recommend this book for any child under the age of six or seven.

Like the Veggie Tales books, this book has an open meaning of God's truth. He is a plain catepillar that speaks to God. He is constantly questioning and asking God why he is so plain. He is constantly told to wait and be patient, that God loves him how he is. Even when he gets frustrated with how he is, God still gives him the same answer. He doesn't understand God's plan for him until he changes Into a butterfly and becomes a new creation. This book holds a great message for any child who feels like they do not belong for one reason or another and shows them that talking to God and relying in him can give you the peace you need.

I love the books that help our children know that they're not alone. They're not alone when they feel 'less' than everyone else. They are not alone when they talk to God. And, they are not alone when they feel sad.
This is one of those books that will help them to grow and understand. Not only are the words appropriate for a first or second grade reader but the emotions are reflective of them, as well.

Of course there is a good message here--it is Max Lucado...but SO CLICHE and overly obvious that I had to drag myself through it (and even skipped over some parts without my children knowing just so I could get finished more quickly). The illustrations and even name seemed like thinly cloaked duplications from "A Bug's Life". Felt a little "light hearted" for a book about our relationships with Deity.

My favourite Max Lucado again... this one is a kids' book (need to get to some adult books by Lucado)... but what a beautiful story... There is a youtube recording of someone reading You Are Special by Max Lucado, but for Hermie there is only an embellished cartoon that I could find. Read this to my daughter tonight as a bedtime story, and she really enjoyed it. One of the things she wanted to know was if Hermie's God was the same as ours. She liked seeing how Hermie turned out and was a little upset that she didn't get to see Wormie's transformation. This is a great children's book. I would recommend it to anyone to read to their child.

My son and I have had the pleasure of reading this cute book. Hermie and Wormie see themselves as common creatures among the others. They want to be different. Hermie as everyone will know turns into a cute butterfly and is happy. My son loved the illustrations and the book. A great read for small kids.

Hermie and his friend, Wormie have a lot of things in common and when they pray to God he tells them that he loves them just the way they are and that He's not done with them yet - they enjoy their local insect friends and have a lot of fun and often help get them out of the "stews" they gotten into. A really nice friendly story with morals and "sense" about being alive!

We don't have the book hermie but we have a series of DVD's from him and they are just so cute, to anyone with children they teach great lessons in a way a child good understand them, all about good morals and values and that Jesus loves you!

Hermie sees a strong ant, a spotted ladybug and a snail with his own house and wonders why he is so common. God explains that he is not finished with him yet. It is a sweet story.
